Every space opera RPG is better with its own species of alien cat people (or nyaliens as I like to call them)

Why are we getting raided?
>>98876215because (current year) =>2016
>>98876205ironically if OP weren't a tourist shitposting and just wrote "can I get a catfolk thread, scifi edition" no one would think they were raiding, someone would dump a bunch of pics, and two idiots would argue about what level of furry is ok allowed and someone would try to start a conversation about what racial abilities are best for cats.
My main problem with feline aliens is they tend to either look too much like a furry in space or just like a stripper in appropriate cosplay.

Catgirls from space you say?
Important question: Should the cat aliens be strong and ferocious, or smart and nerdy?
>>98876912As with any good Sci-Fi, avoiding monolithic cultures is the best. Individual catgirls may be strong, ferocious, smart, nerdy, or any combination of traits. I'll even grant you that a culture may be more likely to produce a catgirl of a certain temperment. But they should by no means be all alike.Except for the clone society of the Copycat species, of course.
>>98876912Yes.
>>98876912The only cat people I ever created for fiction were:1.) Pretty communal (in property and activity).2.) Blunt to the point of being rude (they considered polite obfuscation, on the other hand, rude).3.) Very good-tempered, but could instantly flip over to murderously violent and then right back.4.) Pursuant to point 3, based their justice culture around violent correct. They also liked to get rip-roaringly drunk on fermented fruit and do insane shit like jump between two swinging ropes while blindfolded.>>98876912The slightly longer body (and/or different limb proportions) is something more of these demihumans could stand to have.
>>98876330Nah, one of you would shit on it anyway while lamenting things you could easily change. Its all you know how to do.
>>98877024>Pretty communal (in property and activity).Interesting. So based more on lions and domestic cats than any other cat species? Or was this property considered outside the feline inspiration? Was it more matrilineal in the way of domestic cats with a lot of mothers, sisters, and daughters forming groups while the males genuinely go solo once they're old enough, or was there a father of the pride, so to speak?
>>98876195I am currently creating a race of mole people for my space fantasy daggerheart campaign set in the Solar System. My main idea is that they were artificially created to perform a specific mission on Mercury, which in my setting has been partially terraformed and consists of a network of subterranean caves filled with jungles and tropical vegetation while the surface is still uninhabitably hot. The ancestors of the Mercurian mole people were sent to Mercury millennia ago in order to hunt down a specific monster which was terrorising the human settler population. However, they failed in their mission, and the surviving humans began worshipping the monster instead, declaring independence from the Terran empire and becoming their own isolationist society (vaguely inspired by Mesoamerican and Amazonian natives). The mole people, hunted down by the Mercurian humans, eventually went into hiding and created their own society as outcast tribes hiding in the jungle caves, and are thus locked in a deadly struggle which the Mercurian humans, increasingly organised and numerous, are ever closer to winning. Aesthetically, I want the mole people to be inspired by Tibetan and Vajrayana aesthetics. I imagine them as hulking and tribalistic, of course almost blind. I'll eventually ask our resident artist to make a drawing of them and post it here.
>>98876998>Copycat species
>>98877048It was kinda its own thing, but I was thinking of them more in domestic cat and lion terms than your usual 'solo apex predator' species, yes. I made them relatively equal between the sexes, simply because I had other male or female dominated races, though clans/communities were probably more matrilineal, yes. Parentage was never in doubt for them, you could tell a kit's father (and mother) by their smell, Obviously, this also made it easier for them to intuitively recognize who "belonged." Fairly few notions of privacy, most of a community was expected to pitch in what they knew to help rear kits, though birth mother and father were the most influential adults in their lives by default. The communal thing was an attempt to try and riff on the much-loathed kender and their "not stealing" stealing. Petty property circulates in their clans in a very fluid fashion. They don't ask each other most of the time because implicit in a request is the assumption the other might refuse, which is like calling them selfish in a passive-aggressive way.More plural groups learned how to "ask" with other races they got friendly enough with. Though "asking" came off more like "telling," because they still assume you'd allow it by default and they don't want to insult you by implying you might refuse. I mostly used this for comedy.
>>98877058I had a concept I was workin' on for a space-opera style campaign where early on in the space race, mice came back from Soviet space-flights altered by cosmic radiation that unlocked a capacity for increased intelligence. After countless generations, these Myshi now form an invaluable part of space-faring society. Their small size means they don't take up much room or resources on a ship and generally work as engineering and maintenance, able to get into the small conduits to perform repairs. Nearly every ship in the faction has a colony of Myshi living on it, dashing about with microtools.

>>98877380>Apparently despite looking like shit and being sold as another bit of the current awful skinwalker Star Trek, it was actually decent.Yeah, because the writers actually gave a shit about Star Trek and clearly had a love for TOS, TNG, VOY, and DS9. Sure, there's always plenty to make fun of, but most of the A and B plots in Lower Decks could have worked just fine (albeit played more seriously) on any of the original TV Treks. There's even a comic where Shaxs shows up on another ship in a perfectly straightforward manner and it's implied most of what happens on Lower Decks is entertaining embellishment.
>>98877380>>98877421Yeah, the first season was pretty bad though. But when hasn't Trek had a rough first season?Prodigy is also good
>>98877400That's not remotely calarts. Its a rick and morty spinoff style, and those shows never fit in or came from the calarts mold. Besides, studios burned all the artists of the calarts era. You're more likely to see them in indie animations now than anything else. Hell, a fuck ton of them are doing shit with Glitch. Lower Decks is a spinoff of the spinoff style developed by the rick and morty people, and that animation's DNA is in the adult family cartoons. Calarts would be too proud for that.
>>98877421You can tell their love of the franchise because they slip in obscure jokes about the old animated trek series and they have the best Klingon characters in the franchise. No one else respects or understands Klingons like them.
>>98877434EXPERIENCE BIJ.
>>98877427It's the trek rule. 1-2 first seasons are awful, but then it gets really good. It kind of happened with PIC too. I almost ALMOST thought that was going to happen with DIS with season 3 seeming almost not bad, but that did not even last that whole season. So the only good nutrek is lower decks.

>>98877394I wouldn't worry about that, people here are too out of touch to know enough to think they're supposed to hate it. Unironically they seem like they have a good idea of making the Dnd 5.5 race rules work by giving all their races actually interesting shit. >>98878864wrong. its not dystopian at all. that is why you don't GET it. earth gov is dystopian because bablyon 5's humanity has yet to actually change, fundementally. star treks humanity IS better, superior than what they used to be, because the horrors of ww3 and the eugenics wars finally shocked humanity enough.

>>98878864>I'd kill for a Trek series that just explores the day to day and general fuck-ups of people living on Earth and those who have to deal with them.it would be boring because they supposedly live rather happy and carefree lives of personal fulfillment, enlightenment, and striving for self-improvement. Then what makes the federation what it is is that the excitable adventurous people all want to go to space and explore, but they also want to project their optimism on the universe. >>98878868 is right that they had a big enough scare to somehow figure out how to actually be on that kind of track and develop that insane optimism. They've kind of evolved on a cultural level into a kind of idealized version of humanity today. And multiple shows have had aliens baffled but refer to it as infectious. What people often miss when talking about trek humans being a utopia is that it's the people that became something better than us first.
>>98878855>>98878868>>98878894Are you the same spurge from /stg/?
>>98878894You haven't watched it. Anyone who has can tell the show creators are madly in love with Trek and really know their shit. They're out there making obscure callback to old-school fandom jokes about extremely specific TOS episodes, and you want to tell me they hate trek because you're projecting all the DISC crap onto them. See, I hate nutrek because I tried watching nutrek. You hate it because people on the internet told you to. You're pathetic.
>>98878910Jesus you're boring as fuck. Are you really going to sit here and tell me trekverse Humans are soo great that things like petty crime no longer exists?I guess that's why people never leave Earth Gov and live the ultra carefree life on Earth right? The fact that motives can and are no longer driven by based material desires like money and physical possessions would make for an interesting look at why people do the things they do like someone doing something cruel and evil because they are bored, or someone having a jealous fit or committing a crime of passion because they were cheated on or being terminally addicted to the use of a holodeck.I will say that I liked parts of Picard because it showed the weight of Picard's name and fame/infamy and also what happens when that social currency is no longer accepted but I guess that sort of thing is too much for some people.
>>98878910star trek humanity runs the federation BECAUSE they have chosen to be better, they HAVE changed their entire species, climbing out of the ashes like a pheonix, new, better than they ever were before. that is why the OTHER founding races of the federation, saurians, rigellians, tellarites, vulcans, andorians NEVER built a federation. UNTIL the humans came along. the human superpower is that humans build communities. star trek humans are a people who just do things, because they can.farmer joe and his clan farm 500,000 hectares on planet bumfuckania not because the EVIL FEDERATION says so, but because they LOVE the rollling hills and fields and growing things and the wet green earth yielding triticale for others to enjoy. they love running an ancient style vineyard, because they can.just like engineers Smyth and Atsuki of SCE love smashing industrial replicators together on new colonies so they can start 3d printing towns and roads and sewers etc. because they LOVE to build things that will remain centuries and centuries after them.star trek humans are the people who plant trees they will never see grow.the entire point of star trek is to remind us we can CHOOSE to be better, we don't HAVE to be assholes, selfish, vicious shits to each other.as such, all the NuTrek shows fail at the basic premise of trek, because every character is a total fucking CUNT. lower decks especially is egregious. Mariner COULD have been a heroic, inspirational black woman leader. we had Sisko and avery brooks and his character is beloved still.

>>98878985No. because the show shits on mom to make mariner's insanity look less demented.and no character ever meaningfully develops in the show. its simpsons in space.
>>98878945Look at all this projection. I am looking for anything here that even resembles a response to what I was saying and I don't see it. I literally said there's people who want excitement and go to space for it. So yeah that's the federation and people breaking free of earth's government to do crazy shit. It's boring that you think boring is necessarily a bad thing. A boring life is a good one. Interesting times is a curse. >>98878959Who are you responding to? Not me apparently. >Mariner COULD have been a heroic, inspirational black woman leader. we had Sisko and avery brooks and his character is beloved still.Yeah she could have. That was the point of her character arc. That she just like sisko she lost someone to war but let it break her and made her feel guilty about moving on without her friend. And she had a whole multi-season arc of getting over it. That was her character. What the fuck kind of point are you making here?
>>98879004>no character ever meaningfully develops in the show>he hasn't watched more than a bit of season 1literal background characters have meaningful development you dinkbat. You really haven't watched it have you.
>>98878962Nah TAS is too easy. See that one is expected and is more obvious when they do it. What people don't expect is shit from TOS that too many diehard TNG era fans are not actually as familiar with as they project.
>>98878970can you make up your mind on whether you're saying the showrunners know the fandom or not? You can't complain they don't know anything but also complain when they make obscure references to old shows that aired before you were born.
>>98879023i watched until the hell space station of retards and that arc finished, with mariners mom 'banished' to lead shit station fuck.that was the utterly lowest part of the whole show. every season just kept getting worse.LD just has every god damn episode operating out of a premise that can't exist in ST.

Trekkies always seemed so goddamn miserable about their show.Like almost as miserable as Techno purists or Indonesians with an IQ over 105 stuck in the countryside. It's never passionate fan argument it's existential threat-level hysterics or morose dooming Every. Single. Time.
>>98879054oh yeah they hate watched the entire franchise just to make a satirical cartoon with jokes with references only dyhard fans would even get. That makes sense. Get over yourself. Discovery sucked, its spinoffs sucked. But it wasn't a conspiracy to destroy the franchise you schizo.
>>98878959Sisko is beloved for being a war criminal, it's not because he embodied the ideals of the federation but because he went against them.
>>98879061it's one of those fandoms where some autistic people have way too much of it memorized so you can't say shit without them popping up to cite or correct it. But this creates the inverse of them too, other autistic retards who need to be performative about hating things because they aren't able to be a walking wiki for the franchise but can justify watching less by hating what they didn't watch. Two entirely different types of insufferable.
>>98879051you're not even describing shit in the order it happened. And you do remember it's a satirical comedy right? They had a goofy monster that drank bones as part of a b plot. You want this cartoon to be super serious apparently. Fun isn't allowed in the franchise where going too fast turns you into a salamander.
>>98879023>literal background characters have meaningful development you dinkbat. You really haven't watched it have you.Fuck the entire premise stems from the TNG episode "Lower Decks".
A trekkie is the reason Chakats exist and for that I will never stop hating Star Trek
>>98879108>A trekkie is the reason Chakats exist and for that I will never stop hating Star TrekMan that's like blaming Star Trek for the fact that the term "Mary Sue" exists!
>>98879108I think them being a furry is why they exist not them being a trekkie. But don't forget star wars has centaurs and that was probably also just someone's fetish.
>>98879011Interesting times are precisely what trekverse humanity should be measured against. Imagine the drama of a federation officer who actually did some bad/shady shit to get to where they are instead of just being a "bad boy" who broke the rules like Kirk and having to confront their sins.
>>98879120Mariner is like a deconstructed mary-sue. Or like the inverse of Discovery's main character. The difference is whether the show makes them suffer for their bullshit or protects them.

>>98879132There's the lazy writer cliche where for some reason admirals in starfleet just randomly turn evil. But it sounds like you mean someone who was always being fucked up.
>>98879161>Isn't that like every other Starfleet admiral? Is it? Anytime they are usually brought into the episode(s) they are one note road blocks the crew has to puzzle around to save the day. We know who Janeway was but we don't get to see what she was doing in between getting back home and becoming an Admiral.>>98879168We're talking about a society where your name and reputation carry actual weight so how do you make a name for yourself when there are other people doing the same thing? You can't tell me that, somewhere on the recruit to admiral journey that there arn't fuckups that could torpedo your career or jealous rivals who can and will do anything to get one over on you.
>>98879157the point of a sue is that they don't have in universe flaws. They are flawed in being too 'perfect' and too loved by the writer, that's what makes a sue. When a character is just extremely competent but has flaws, that's not a sue. Which is why I compare Mariner to Burnham from DIS. Burnham should have been in prison by episode 2. Every decision she makes is nonsensical. The characters in universe go out of their way to let the audience know her ideas are terrible, nonsensical, illogical, and destructive. And then they are exactly that. And then she has to fix the problems she created using contrived means that also should not work, and mostly for the sake of drama, and then for no reason actually works. And then people scold her and she goes "I'm sorry I won't do it again" and then does it again. That's a fucking mary-sue. Meanwhile Mariner mostly has actually sensible ideas the audience can agree with, she's performative about being like Kirk but grounded when actually doing shit, but when she does get stupid about shit she's immediately shut down or proven wrong and admits it she was wrong.
>>98879210>somewhere on the recruit to admiral journey that there arn't fuckups that could torpedo your career or jealous rivals who can and will do anything to get one over on you.that's the thing, there's nuance there that never fit the cable tv format. Weirdly Lower Decks somehow managed to touch on that better than the others shows even if only as an afterthought of a couple random episodes.
>>98879232That's what happens when you put emphasis on alien god things that cosplay as figures from ancient earth to put you through a purity test rather than explore the inner workings of Earth Gov/Federation society .
>>98879243It probably goes back to that "no interpersonal conflict!" rule echoing well past its removal.
>>98879258I just find it funny when comparing against my lived experience of being in the military. NCOs who run prostitution rings, drug dealing, getting someone pregnant or being the source of an STD outbreak or stealing weapons out of the armory to go murder your girlfriend.
>>98879210>Is it?No, but it's a trend. Cartwright in Star Trek VI is conspiring against peace with Klingons, down to doing assassinations. Dougherty scheming in secret to forcefully relocate a planet's population and harvest their planet. Kennelly made under the table dealings with the Cardassians against the Bajorans. Leyton tried to stage a coup on Earth. Pressman worked on a secret federation cloaking tech in violation of the Treaty of Algeron. Satie put Picard on a show trial. Savar, Quinn, Aaron tried to take over the Federation. Jameson was corrupt.
>>98879291I guess a lot of that is eliminated when you have holodecks to make most of that obsolete. Who needs drugs when you can have a hologram wife pour you a synthehol margarita on the beach before you fuck her.
>>98879313Fair to a degree. Looking up a lot of them made me remember some of these episodes. I guess what I'm getting at is more personal rather than just being the big bad for the crew to deal with. They are the protaganist and we see and experience their bullshit from their perspective.>>98879320I suppose, but imagine explaining to your wife that you used an illegal holodeck program so you could live out your rape/murder fantasies and the social stigma of people finding that out.
>>98879320>Who needs drugsAll the people who have to clean the holodeck after you hollowed out your dick everywhere in there.
>>98879061>It's never passionate fan argument it's existential threat-level hysterics or morose dooming Every. Single. Time. The dooming isn't all that unreasonable, though; if the Trek you liek is TOS and TNG and DS9 (or even VOY/ENT/TAS/etc. or really pretty much anything before the '09 movie) and therefore want more content in that vein.... you're just fucked, coming and going. The people who own the franchise don't care about you besides hoping that you'll get nostalgiabaited into paying to watch whatever Netflix-tier slop they churn out (hey guys, 'member the mirror universe? 'Member captain Pike? 'member that episode of TNG that wasn't about the bridge crew?) and the made-for-syndication format which formed a massive part of the franchise's DNA is deader than disco and has been for decades.
>>98878877>It's practically fanmade parodyAnd that's the issue. It's a parody being paraded as part of the mainline franchise. People want Star Trek, not "look at us, wasn't this show sooooo silly back in the day? hahhaha, look at how we fit in hundreds of references! dont you 'member the references? dont you wanna clap when you see thing and recognize it?!"

>>98879232except there isn't any of that in star trek ever. because fucking someone else over for a promotion just wouldn't even OCCUR to a star trek human, let ALONE a star fleet polymath human.
>>98879313except cartwright isn't a scheming warmongering lunatic profiteer and MIC puppet. he genuinely is fearful of the klingons constant treachery and backbiting and them becoming the alien trash of the galaxy, roving terroristic raiders. he also at least respects them enough to want to allow them to have their honourable end in making their threat over and done with. and with the ongoing history of trek. he has kind of been proven right. ALL being allies with the klingons has gotten the federation has been a fucking dk'tahg in the back. every time the federation reaches out a hand of friendship, some klingon asshole hacks it off with a batleth.>>98879291good thing star trek humanity is above all that to the point they cannot even comprehend why someone would er compromise and destroy themselves with drugs of any kind, to the point they almost never even consume alchohol, using synthahol instead.
>>98879351again. star trek humans don't do that shit.>>98879579untrue. you can take the campaigns and mission briefs from all of STA and run your crew of proper trek characters through them.

There's plenty of actual alcohol served at Ten Forward and Quark's. Humans drink bloodwine, Romulan ale, kanar, etc. Replicators are capable of replicating normal alcohol. Picard's brother runs a winery where they make regular wine. People also enjoy coffee.

>>98876195Yes, but the real question is;Ears on the side, or ears on the top.
>>98886880I prefer ears on the side but slightly above where human ears are located. Ears on top make no anatomical sense with a humanlike skull.
>>98886880Whichever looks good on the design. If it's a full on anthro with very animal features, then proper ear placement for said animal is proper. If it's more human with some animal features, then more human ear placement.
>>98886880Ear lobes on top of the head like a cat that channel the sound to ear canals in roughly the place of a human's.

>>98886880Whatever the Izutsumi option is
How cat is too cat?for a more detailed rundown>Tier 1This is typical anime catgirl tier. Furry ears, furry tail, furless human body. This is the Aisha ClanClan tier.>Tier 2Covered in fur but still has human facial features. Furry with plausible deniability. Michiru from BNA, Izutsumi from Dungeon Meshi, Catra from She-Ra, Cheetara from Thundercats are all Tier 2.>Tier 3Classic furry. No deniability. Still mostly humanoid body, but very animalistic facial features. May or may not have digitigrade feet.M'ress from Star Trek or Lop from Star Wars would both fall here.>Tier 4More animal than human at this point. The Zootopia tier.Though it could be argued that most classical Disney and Loony Tunes characters would fit here. >Tier 5This is just an animal.Straight to jail if you ever mentioned getting turned on by Nala's "bedroom eyes".

>>98878807Monke is the superior girl.
>>98876912They should be big! On a more serious note, they should be varied, unless you have a specific reason to make a whole race have a uniform demeanor. No, being lazy is not an acceptable reason.
>>98886070>first encountered in 2378>art shows her wearing a uniform from literally a hundred years before then
Should the cats be a part of the Human Federation or have their own Catgirl Empire?
>>98890370an empire doesn't make sense for cats. They'd have a collection of semi-united frequently warring lesser kingdoms and a lot of isolationist communities. Cats don't need to be around other cats but they do need to know where all the other cats are at any particular time.
>>98890308And that art came out half a century after the show the uniform is from.
>>98890308Supply shortages, please understand.
>>98890725must be starbase 80.
>>98889321Human ears AND cat ears always irks me. Pick one or the other.
>>98892265I'd like a #6 with a side of #5, please
>>98892265This is a thing I always say for japanese "beast" characters. They have ears and tails that are just accessories. The ears may as well be something on a headband. They're so tiny here. Ears of the same relative size as cats ears are to their head would look too big on a human usually, but you need something close to that. Then a middle ground. Put them on the side of the head but raised up. Not low enough to stick out to the sides, but not too high they look weird without the human ears.
>>98892265apologies for the sloppa, but what if we made her more cat
>>98892581Honestly a pretty good use of slop. Not as good as drawing it yourself, but I'll accept it as a short term substitute
>>98883333>get quads to doubtChecked and witnessed.
>>98884648>ZygerriansI'll never be able to take this name seriously. Even only as seriously as the creators intended.
>>98892336So, cat with human ears and another pair of human ears on top of the head?
>>98892265I honestly like 4ears, especially when the worldbuilding accounts for it and has them utilize all four ears for complex echolocation like an owl. Or like VA11 Hall-A where the cat ears are just bizarre protrusions caused by gene splicing and not actual ears.1, 2 and 4 from your pic all work for me.
