It might be one of the worst systems ever made.

There's nothing good about it.

It has tons of rules, but they all make the game worse, rather than better. For any given rule, it will be one of the worst iterations of it in any game, with them all being giant wastes of time that make you roll far more than you need to, assemble spreadsheets just to add ignorable modifiers with little impact, cross reference charts in different parts of the book, and basically just do everything in the least efficient way because the guy making it cared more about hitting a page count. He even said as such, and when even with the most bloated rules he could make he failed to reach his arbitrarily decided 1500 pages, he filled in the extra space with AI slop.

If the rules were worth the effort, it would be one thing, but all they do is generate lame, uninspired, and incredibly generic results that make the game an endless series of letdowns for anyone hoping for something even mildly entertaining.

There might be worse games in terms of just some idiot typing up gibberish for three pages and calling it a game, but there's no game that's more of a giant waste of time.

DrivethruRPG sells the books and the PDFs. I would suggest the PDFs. Hell would suggest all three of the core books as the point of ACKS isn't low tier play but long term high level play with domain play. You can just do low level gameplay but it shines once you get to interact with the other systems and see how they are intertwine and see why everything is the way it is over just letting the GM "handwave" it or throw a few d20s to say how your kingdom/store/etc is doing and trigger events. You're actions can effect the game via the rules they have but you have to use all the rules and unless you learn how to do it properly, you can fuck up the system. Also people don't like the creator isn't a leftist so they hate on it like whining some of the artists he hires use AI I think. Or complain it too "autistic" when that was a major selling point due to all of the systems and how the interact with everything. 5e made everything streamlined and now anything that goes back into more details they whine is "too much."

Again it is not perfect but it does what it sets out to do, though it does filter out most 5e tourists and activists. Basically if you're playing ACKS or using it's systems, you're most likely trying to play in the same world for years over just one "campaign."

I've been playing it for a year with my group and I've been enjoying it a lot. All the tables in the books make for easy on the fly-adventuring. My players have been enjoying recruiting henchmen and taking them on adventures with them a lot. They are all around level 8-9 at the moment and one player is really into mercantile ventures, though I wonder to what extent the rest of them will interact with the campaign/domain-level mechanics.

That's often when the game really gets to shine. People might whine about the stuff in the beginning especially if they only played 5e and all but once you get into the high level play with getting domains, running stores and guilds, making spy networks, etc. You start to see why everything is the way it is. (Especially when you have your custom stuff added in and it doesn't break the game and feels like it always been in there mechanically.) Again I am not saying this game is perfect, but good luck finding anyone who makes high level play as well as domain play and war gaming. (If I remember correctly the Mass combat has a few things but Alex next book is going to be all about mass combat and wargaming.)

NTA but I ran a domain level game for 1e with some mates many moons ago.

My tip is to go into it as much or as little as your players want. Some of my guys wanted to go really deep into running their domains while others wanted to do the politics and scheming and others wanted to fight high level monsters for loot and fame and bitches.

Some of the stuff in 2e I think makes it easier to accommodate all three playstyles but my current group hasn't got past level two yet so we're a way off.
