>>98872008>Did you ever visit a convention? No>Why did you or would you ever visit a convention? With increasing age, I am beginning to think I would hate it. Where I had no problems with festivals and continous noisiness 10 years ago, I have begun to notice very large gatherings stress me out. Not in the faggot sense of oh no I am too sensitive I can't deal with it but rather in a well navigating through a crowded and noisy hall would cost me more energy than it's worth.>What news do you expect from Spiele Essen convention?Lotsa good games. Looking forward to takes on -60°C and Medico. And a lot of stuff that's not that hot I've forgotten the names of.
>>98872065Thats understandable. It is very full and alot of waiting lines. I hate it too when you reach some bottleneck or heavy frequented table and have to wait to pass or get a look. The noise is acceptable but can be distracting when you are in the gaming area.
Did you know GW has a 40K Lasertag arena?

>>98872457that and the rules, 70 quid for a very replayable almost forever game is a good deal, and it's got a unique artstyle too.
>>98872457Cool.
>>98872295I suppose I should have said I can't imagine to visit a purchase and novelty focussed con. Ones where actually playing the game is the focus seem rad.I just can't see what use it'd be to wait 15-60 minutes in line to play 2-3 turns of a game. Like, you can't really get a feeling for gameflow, balance, you probably don't even all the mechanics unless it's a very light partyish game or tricktaker.
>>98872349Do you get to crush your superego under a big rock?
>>98872008>Did you ever visit a convention? All the time - I try to go to a couple local ones and one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast each year.>Why did you or would you ever visit a convention? It's a great way to meet new gamers in your area and it's a great way to get into games you couldn't get your regular groups to play and get introduced to games that you don't particularly want to buy (ie Imperial Borders).>What news do you expect from Spiele Essen convention?Nothing. Spiel continues to underwhelm. Most of the good stuff gets announced during Origins now.>>98872556My recommendation is to check out tabletop.events for cons in your area. They usually have a game schedule where you can sign up for games so you're not stuck just wandering around or playing shit you don't want to play. For the better cons, you can spend the entire time gaming instead of half of the time looking for games.
Introduced another couple of people to Ruins of Arnak. The second game was with the expansion. The expansion is all sorts of good stuff. The big thing is of course, the leaders. I love asymmetry in games, and while the leaders don't throw the game on its head, most have either something you would expect and want (more workers) or some interesting gimmick. These kinds of things may introduce some level of pigeonholing or dependencies and make the game more luck based, but the jury's out on that.New rule increasing the number of cards cleared from the market each round was very welcome and frankly necessary with how clogged up it constantly gets with shit nobody wants. I very much like how the Monkey temple concentrates reward tiles in one place so that people who pass first don't just gobble up all of them and get a compounding advantage on the research track.Overall, the game is getting more bloated and annoying to set up and tear down, but I think this expansion justifies itself. We'll see how it holds up after more plays.
Today I taught my 6 year old bullet today and a grand time was had.Timer based rounds is a bit beyond her, but seeing light bulbs go off on recognizing patterns, squeals of delight getting Star clear bonuses, and the smugness in sending a bunch of bullets Dad's way is an absolute treat to watch.
>>98872828Loser cope.
Am I crazy or just imagining this?Discord took over Facebook, which had replaced classic Forums which are 90% dead/gone now. If I want to find players, I'm best off hitting up every FLGS Discord in my area... but that wasn't an issue years ago. It worked great then. Now the invite links are hidden and/or expired and never refreshed, while the Facebook pages are half dead and/or older players only. I had to drive to the FLGS to get into the Discord to see how active any particular game is, and every FLGS Discord that doesn't make itself a walled garden is having issues with culling bots and spam every week.I just want to find players for games.
>>98872400>>98872029>>98872457I snagged a copy awhile back and have been waiting to get it to the table. I really liked their other games.FYI you're paying 70-120$ for the sheer playtesting and depth Splotter puts into their stuff. For 70-120$+ I'd compare it to decent Chess and Go sets.
>>98873173are you surprized that with a name like that it puts distance between people?
>>98873173Are you moving a lot? What I can't help but notice is how you have apparently been visiting these open game nights for years yet haven't found a decent group. Which I have always assumed was the point of going to public meetings, finding likeminded souls with whom you can dodge the horrors that stalk such meetups
>>98873200I'm 99% sure even some pretty eurosloppy shit like SETI has been tested an order of magnitude more than splotters. Not to dismiss them, don't get me wrong, but the little meetup in which they test their games aren't special. Again, not dissing their games per se, I even own TGZ. Just fuck every single thing about splotter but the gameplay their games provide, that is all.
>>98873173meetup you dumbass. if there isn't one you can start one for less than a game costs and that's barring piggy backing on some adjacent group as buying one group give you three so most group owners will have two spares. and that's all assuming there aren't already meetups active in your area.
>>98873232I think very much that should be the long term plan but just having multiple tables so you can try a lot of games and avoid players that are that guy. all my social experiences are pre-covid which I think really killed what was turning into a golden age of board game groups.

>>98872015I have personally fucked both of those sluts in their tight asses, pulled their hair back and fed my cock fresh from their anus into their gasping mouths, held my hand under the chin and felt them swallow rope after rope of my cum, and proceeded to bend them back over and fill their still gaping buttholes with piping hot frothy dark yellow piss.Boardgamesedly speaking, they are really good at knowing the rules but chill enough to let a few things slide once in a while as long as the spirit of the fun is preserved. They don’t care for card games that much but they will play them with you if it’s largely luck based.
>>98873263We buried the Jaipur Maglev guy in 2018 anon. How bad of a slip did you suffer?
>>98873232I've been going to meetups for around 2 years. I do play at houses of people I met at the meetups but those people still go to the meetups and when they have people over it's usually the meetup timeslots on weeks where there's no meetup. There are a handful of people I don't like playing with at the meetups but most of the people are cool. aren't fixed tables but the regulars tend to end up at similar tables. From what I've heard some of them have been attending for over 15 years. I think the reason people are going to the meetups when they could be hosting a single curated table at their own house is that coordinating and hosting is a pain in the ass.
>>98873232>Are you moving a lot?Rotating genres every few years. TTRPGs, TCGs, LCGs, HWGs, Board Games, mainline wargames, AWGs, etc, are all different circles of people. I'll get really into, say competitive card games for a few years, and by the time I'm bored with it half the active playerbases of other games are gone and replaced by something else. Literally only 40k, MTG, and D&D remain the same, everything else is dust in the wind.Years ago Facebook was the most solid, and got me a nice RPG group, but we're wrapping up and I want to do other things, so I've embarked to check out all the Discords, and it's looking best for a quick "Anybody down for (list of board games) this weekend".>>98873247Meetup is a mix of Public Libraries collecting people who fail the sniff test and can't get into private groups for a reason, and people who have curated what's effectively a closed group who's known everyone in it for years rotating between Greg's house (His wife needs everybody out by a certain hour), Jim's basement (ignore the angry notes on your windshield they won't actually Tow you), and Nathan's 1-bedroom apartment he somehow crammed a full size gaming table into just squeeze in between the dirty laundry basket and the Futon.Discord/Facebook is "Anybody want to X on Saturday?" and we book a table and buy snacks.

>>98845595picked up my 20 Strong today and played half a game to learn. First impression is that it's really quite cool that they've designed a seemingly deep and and immersive roguelike in a small box. I had fun and I'm about to play it properly now. Seems like there might be quite a bit of variation and potential builds between runs. I'm actually very curious how the other games in the series use the core bones of the game to implement different ideas - the only common feature as far as i can tell is the combat structure, the 20 dice and the dial but they all use it differently. I guess they all have the "pick a hero, defeat the bosses to win" thing though. The rulebook was somewhat confusing in one particular aspect, and I even followed along with their interactive tutorial app yet couldn't get clarification on something until I watched a Youtube video,The cards are really nice, great production. I know Chip Theory is known for that but I've only played their games like twice cus i'm a poorfag. Looks like there's a lot of game here, and it only cost me 23 GBP which is really good value considering the production quality and what looks to be quite a few hours of game.I don't mind the theming of Little Red Riding Hood yet I don't love the actual art direction, but it's nice enough.Anyone else played this series? I definitely want to try Etherfields and Tainted Grail eventually. You can play the deck I purchased on BGA if you're curious, I didn't know that until after I bought it though.

>>98873894There is a Youtube video and it is good to see the pictures
>>98874134I would very much make a distinction between playing and demoing a game, though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard anyone mentioning an area with open tables where you can actually play your games? All it has is games being demoed.
>>98874198I've never been to a board game convention but I've gone to several anime conventions with a board game room where you could borrow games and play them at open tables. It would be very strange if board games conventions didn't have that.

>>98873904>Splotter makes a point of manufacturing local in the NetherlandsLook their games are really good but splotter stockholm syndrome is real. They don't produce locally (anymore, at least) and if they had any interest in having others take care of the annoying logistical work that producing a boardgame comes with, there are a lot of publishers hungry for the licences. But they choose not to, or to do so for borderline scammy prices (see the whole capstone story). Personally, I believe the limited printruns are only a thing because they don't pay for a warehouse but store it in the garage of wiersingas second house. Their games can are unique, often very good AND they are utter jews. Both can be true
>>98874198You are right. It is mostly demo tables. There are sometimes tables where you can borrow some games.

I went to the FFG website (which has a new design despite the one they've had for over decade being perfectly fine) and the product document archive doesn't work. I understand redesigns but how do you fuck up static links to PDF files? This is the one page that you should NEVER change or mess with. I'm honestly so fed up with this companies managed decline into irrelevance. They used to be the hottest board game publisher that wasn't Hasbro or Asmodee and now they're nothing.
I like janky izzet decks where you assemble card draw engines and burn opponents based on the number of cards you draw and deal damage based on the number of cards in hand in MTG - board games for this feel?

He has a history degree, so all his games have some historical anchor.Pax Pamir is streamlined and more intuitive to learn than any other Pax-series game. It has a heavy bent on table politics like all of his games. It's not an engine Tableau builder per say, but kind of looks like one if you ignore the fact you can have wildly different Tableaus and engines after a few turns. The game design rewards players for being flexible and duplicitous. I've once heard it described as "a knife fight in a phone booth".It's really fun if you like table politics and rapidly changing political landscapes. It's one of my favorite games, it's about the heaviest game you can drop on a normie and have it "click" while they're playing it. It's such a simple auction with just the right amount of unknowns where it almost takes it into gambling territory."If I pass on this auction, will the plant in the bottom row come up so I can get that one?""What if something else comes out and that plant doesn't move up?""Is it a better idea get a cheaper plant so I have better position in the next phases?"Add in the fact that there a ton of different maps that change each of those parameters on their head and it's hard to argue against PG.

>>98889120Excalibur for sure. After that, probably Tammany Hall or Pax Pamir.Stationfall is ridiculous. Your first game you probably ignore like half the rules but then game 2, someone realises how data transfer for blackmail works and now the guaranteed winner got fed to the cops and everyone cares about how much power the station has game three and whether cameras are On/Off for comitting violence on humans. But now the doors are all unsealed and the Engineer player has some robot waltz into engineering and jetison the anti matter core and we're all gonna die.

I think Hegemony deserves a mention based on just how much you can collude and abuse each other. Less in a "player X attacked/stole from/blocked player Y" sense (though that is there) and more in the sense of constantly voting against, taxing the fuck out of, underpaying, and generally bullying someone. The game does ask a lot from its players though. You really should engage with all its systems and with each other to get the most out of it.
>>98872773>Overall, the game is getting more bloated and annoying to set up and tear down, but I think this expansion justifies itself.Oh boy, and here comes the twisted path expansion.
>>98889994>>98872773Twisted Paths doesn't much more bloat to setup. Both of the new boards just take the place of the main board and there are some new tiles you add based on board (dark tablets and lanterns). I'd rate the expansions thus -1a) Expedition Leaders (must have - leaders and new temples)1b) Surprise Shipment (if you just want to own the base game but want more replayability for $20)2) Twisted Paths (Owl Temple is the best temple in the game)3) Missing Expedition (The temples aren't that good, the campaign mode is crap, the keystone cards and tiles are gimmicky but it has the two best leaders in the game)
>>98890700Cheers.>best templeDo you vary up your temples between games or do you find that the worse ones don't offer anything redeeming to go back to?>bloatI consider every new type of piece, every separate rulebook, reference card, etc. as bloat. Sorting out the shit you need is a factor, going through different rulebooks for setup/expansion-specific rules keywords is another. Some of it may not be bloat in the narrow sense that you can separate out components you no longer plan on ever touching to another box, but I don't make a habit of doing this in fear of shit getting lost/forgotten. I'll probably do this specifically for the base decks/campsites though, I really doubt we'll be going back from leaders.

E.g., whether to prioritise buying a desirable card or digging at a valuable site. There is also much more versatility in how you can go about achieving something because you can stockpile resources and buy actions without depending on the cards.>no intrigue cards, victory cards, or massive VP swings in the last roundAll of which means good play over time is rewarded over getting lucky.
>>98895508Don't get me wrong, Arnak is a soft, gay little game, and I especially understand someone hating the temple research track, but it is far better designed than Dunc. It is honestly baffling how something so mediocre is at the top of BGG charts.>massive VP swings in the last roundJust to illustrate this. A 5+ VP swing in the last round of Uprising is COMMON. This means 12.5% of the game is commonly responsible for >=50% of winning VPs. Call it impact factor of 4.Meanwhile in Arnak, a round represents 20% of the game and the VPs generated in the last round track closer to 40%. Impact factor of 2. It's also more dependent on how well you were able to set up certain things (climbing the research track to start buying the juicy tiles, clearing temples, setting up your deck) to allow you to actually make those gains. Meaning you're not gonna jump from last place to first on the last round, lil gup.
>>98895468I think we played with all the expansions, can't really tell what changes since I have no frame of reference
>>98895508Why do people always review games so heavily on luck? Many games have luck, but good play and experience mitigates it. I think people who hate on DU due to luck just haven't played enough like folks who hate on Slay the Spire being too rng.

>>98895715there are two expansions>Bifurcationadds 9 alt variants to each faction, but they're not recommended for new players because they add more rules for everyone to follow (for example, alt Unity roll dice to see what they want to do, alt Kjas turn into a "must donate everything and get something from donations" psychos, alt Faderan eat tech teams for breakfast, alt bees have a deck of techs instead of a deck of planets)>Proliferationadds a whole bunch of shit, like the Bid Trackers (to do research/colony bids during the trade phase), Alt Colony deck with more wild ideas (like giving twice as much stuff than usual colonies do, but putting that stuff into donations, forcing you to trade it away), and rebalanced starting resource cards (for example, Base Unity with the new start cards draws 3 colonies and picks 1 to keep, and basically everyone starts with more ships).
>>98895810It's literally the same.
>>98895991So your argument starts and ends at "with experience you can mitigate luck". My contention is that I'm reasonably confident I can take games off "pros" in Dunc at a roughly 1/2 ratio, which is a mark of a shit game. A pro should be able to beat an amateur 9 times out of 10 or more. I can't say the same about Arnak because the scores we reach in our games indicate a pro would beat our ass every time. Same goes for Dominion. All of these games have significant amounts of luck. It is healthy for longevity and variety. Only DUNC is in the "brainlet-friendly" category based on just how much luck dominates. If you need reminding, StS is a PvE game, which means A) you play using different rules than the E partB) you only need to pass a certain threshold of deck viability to winNeither is true playing against Ps. What would you get in the last available space at the top? Note that i'm becoming more casual in my tastes and wouldn't go above ~3.50 complexity, and I'm not a biggest fan of bloat (i.e. SETI). >>98896797Where is your copy of Kemet good sir?
>>98896440>interactionLike I mentioned with the set cards, I find this to be a kind of surface-level appearance. I consider WPs broadly to have almost no interaction at all. Whether it hurts more to have something blocked in Dunc (it does) is irrelevant to that.So I do agree in a sense - Arnak is more permissive about blocking and it feels less interactive, but I think this is also counteracted by the fact that in Arnak you have to consider other players' potential card buys and not just worker placements. Turn 1 someone can buy a card you wanted, there's no real pause until turn 3.The """combat""" is just pure shit though. It is more direct interaction if you want to call it that, but I simply don't consider it a mark in favor of the game.Anyway, I find yours to be at least a reasonable take. I wonder what makes people say Dunc is higher interaction, specifically. Is it just the auction and the stronger blocking?

>>98899262wrong>>98896750viticulture is a near perfect euro with one gigantic flaw: the visitors. see the RNG of the visitors absolutely MOGS the worker placement spots, so the meta is just main worker cards. the expansion tried to fix this by making the workers less powerful but the main workers strat still mogs the worker placement strat.I want to love viticultre but it's no fun when your only chance is to chase visitor cards and hope your RNG is better than the others, it's not longer a euro.
>>98900220How is he wrong, though?>>98896750See >>98900671. Usually, there is fun to be found in spicy, deliberately loosely balanced aspects of a game, but Viticulture is absolutely not the place for it. It is so bad that I seriously doubt Jamies ability to design games on his own. The core of viticulture is suprisingly tight WP that wants you to think a year ahead, and getting blocked is brutal. You have a rough, agricolaesque outline here...and then you add the fucking cards to the mix. They vary wildly in power level and usefullness yet are overall powerful enough to be worth taking everytime. This roulette system imo clashes massively with the aforementioned tight wp and the result is a mess, and said mess is already present before the start of the game where player A might immediately sow grapes and player B takes 3 years to find one he can use. It gets so bad that some games you might completely forgo making and aging wine and making almost all your VP with visitor cards. I do agree there is a basis there that could've been turned into a good game, but it's just an unholy fusion of mechanics that turn out to be ameritrash agricola in the worst way.

HF4A battle report. Got a second proper game in last night. Went into it fairly confident it will be more successful than the first one, and... It was to a degree.First, we managed to start launching our rockets in turn ~12 instead of ~24 like last time. I wanted to try out solar sails, and got a chance to. Instead of barely colonising Mars, this time I did Mercury and Venus and felt pretty good about the initial improvement. The other guys also were doing reasonably well, until one pivotal moment. We made a convoluted three way deal for patents, in which two of us managed to fuck ourselves over and get hard stuck.Meanwhile, the third guy continues to be the unluckiest man in the group. Last time, his rocket exploded on the only hazard roll in the match. This time, he was the only one to get a glitch and 4 parts of his crewless rocket immediately exploded.I thought we would explore much more of the map this time, but we stuck to the inner solar system the entire match. Room for improvement.

>>98899262>Anybody tried it?Bordeaux and Rhine Valley visitors make the game actually be about making wine, it's pretty good. The Tuscany Board is also pretty good and the special workers add a lot to it, could do with the silly Area control minigame though. Basically Rhine Valley Viticulture is actually enjoyable, however it's still down to luck for visitors even when Bordeaux rules give you a display of grapes and wine orders to choose from. That said Bordeaux gives you enough bonuses to constantly pull cards you need so it keeps all players balanced by giving them so many cardplay positions while maintaining the WP blocking.

It's tight and very satisfying to puzzle over, while still managing to keep it all condensed in 9 straightforward turns.>Take a die, place a die>Do corresponding actionsIt's honestly a breath of fresh air, especially given my local meet-up group loves the long nu-euros. Rather than wondering when it will be over, I get that elusive "if only I had one more turn" feeling. It simply doesn't waste your time, and that puts it above most for me.For a similar vibe I would also recommend Northgreen, which I just played last night. They are cut from the same cloth, and I could see that possibly rivaling TWC if I got a few more plays in.
>>98904889What do you have against Arkham? It's fun. My only real complaint is the bullshit lose a turn effects in the other worlds.

>>98905626And oh baby anyone who loves flight is gonna cream themselves slotting this into a custom deck.
>>98905404NTA but all the FFG lovecraft games lean heavily into random bullshit and don't really have any strategy or in some sense even a significant degree of player agency. More structured stuff like MoM or AH LCG have more of a knowledge element, but I find that makes it even worse. Memorising what happens in the scenario in order to save time (because really, all you care about is being time efficient) is not a substitute for strategy. That's why stuff like Spirit Island and Gloomhaven mog the fuck out of these old-school type co-ops. There is a luck element, but the vast majority of what happens in the game happens because of things you did. YOU figured something out. YOU made a play. Or YOU fucked up, didn't account for something, and got overrun.I don't think the kind of "pick a door that takes you on some random rollercoaster" gameplay is invalid or something, but I've really come to hate it over the years.

>>98905404I'm with >>98905644 especially on the LCG, which I'd call an almost pure exploration game. 90% of the fun is discovering what comes next/what X will do. I found most of the game goes like this: we follow path x. Oh it leads to certain doom/harder challenges, lets not ever take it again. Like Time Stories, it seems made to be somewhat brute forced, and the most enjoyable time is the first play. The random everything doesn't really make for interesting stories imo but merely decides how easy your game is gonna be. I like the idea of it, but it is a typical "better as a videogame" game if you ask me, just because it's the kind of game that lives off constant new content. I mean maybe I'm wrong and there's some kind of scene that speedruns scenarios. But you'd never ever want to be associated with speedrunners anyway.

Bit of a session report here.>Stellar VenturesWas quite good! I have little Cube rails reference, but our first game at 3p took us merely 2h, and I'm confident you could get it down to sub 90 min which is pretty great. Can't tell all that much otherwise because the game obviously needs multiple plays to grasp the finer details, we made lots of mistakes. I AM a bit apprehensive about the game becoming rather scripted after a time by its nature amd I'd have liked a bit more...economic tricks, taking control away from someone seems rather rare and if it happens someone likely made a grave mistake? I did like it quite a bit. Not extremely ethusiastic about it but very statisfied.>SpooktacularGave it yet another chance because I desperately want to love this game, this time with full playercount. And, predictably, if was merely okayish. It really wants to be played with quick turns and little analysis, especially because there's no real planning ahead because the boardstate changes so fundamentally each turn. Want to love this way more than I can, it's just a very well presented 6/10 and if people start to overthink their turns the game suffers massively.>Modern ArtAlways a hoot. Appreciate the responses I got on >>98896797, but captcha is making it PITA to respond to everyone.I went with Feed The Kraken, it was a good pick as even I who am not a fan of social deduction had an enjoyable time, plus it was with a crowd that doesn't play games much (we even managed to play it twice). FTK makes social deduction more of a board game-ish experience rather than the usual look at the card for your role these games offer.I'm still having itchy fingers for Dune Imperium: Uprising or Clank!: Catacombs, but I'm hesitant if I actually want to play these or do I just enjoy the idea of playing them. I'm leaning more towards Clank! as I really disliked in the original Dune the moment where someone goes "lol fuck you" revealing intrigue card out of nowhere and losing you the game. Then again, I hated moments when someone in Clank! gets lucky with the market or purges their bad cards very early on.No idea what I would cull to free up the space either, both boxes are quite large and the game would need to be in the upper half of the shelf for me to be satisfied with its layout. I'd maybe cull Pandemic for Clank!, but it's removal does not free up enough space unfortunately.

Catacombsthe rng in the tiles really downplays the rng in the market so it's not as painful when someone gets 3 boots or whatever. catacombs is always a guess as to who won where clank! it was merely an exercise to add up the VPs. also if you have a friend who never makes it out of the depths in Clank! then catacombs also seems to be a cure for that.If you want a deckbuilder that is better than either where you get to pitfight your opponents go for Arctic Scavengers +Recon +HQ
>>98906741If you want Stellar Ventures but less stupid you should check out either Chicago Express or a proper 18XX.
