In my experience, wild kobolds are extremely gamey and riddled with parasites. However, if you eat one in front of the others and they don't have a dragon yet, you become their new dragon and they hunt for you and pay you tribute in uncut gemstones and precious ore, so the parasites are almost worth it.

Unless they find an actual dragon, that is.

Modern kobolds (little reptilian guys) are fine, they look cute and all, but I don't think they capture what I believe was the intended essence the old school ones had.
That being said, I always try to make a kobold character whenever I can. I like the little guys.

I think they should've kept the strength penalty and the daylight blindness. If you're playing as a kobold, you're doing it for the heck of it and for the challenge, not to be a powergamer.
    >>
    >>98893512
Exactly! If you're a small kobold, you should be a scrawny little runt
    >>
    >>98893567
My greatest project is making a kobold barbarian (while trying to maintain the classic penalties and limitations). It's difficult though, that -2 (sometimes -4 depending on the version) in strength really makes things difficult for a strength-based character.
Like obviously I'm not trying to be the strongest character, but I at least want to try and do something that feels more or less viable and fun to play.

    >strength-based character.
Barbarian is a CON-based character clearly and the original Barbarian (Conan) was more of a thief than a warrior in many of the stories before he becomes king.
A Kobold barbarian can just be a wilderness rogue who didn't get good a pick pocketing, since they didn't live in the big city but instead crept into the hoards of monsters and evil sorcerers.

Yeah flavor wise you can make a sort of wild rogue, and it's an excellent concept that I'll for sure try, but he won't be like, the actual barbarian class, with rage and all.
The only viable way that I can think of are if he uses some magic item to give him some decent strength, but that's cheating and it defeats the purpose.

I did always find Lodoss' kobolds weird, they really are more like gnolls that kobolds. I know the east usually sees kobolds as dog-like, but they aren't even small in this case, might as well call them gnolls.

I've been playing the same kobold since 3.5 over 20 years ago. Just kept him in my back pocket to pull out and play in each new edition. Was real fun early in 5th when Kobolds had Pack Tactics.

And yeah he was made when kobolds had -4 to Str l, so his total was 6. Not +6, not 16. 6.
Which is perfectly cromulent for a 2 and a half foot tall lizard dude. But 17 Dex to start meant he, as a bard/rogue was doing just fine.
Also, the DM let me give him goggles that would prevent the light blindness penalty in combat, but when wearing them on the surface, had a pretty big penalty to vision-based perception checks.
But yeah, was really fun to play, even with all those disadvantages. Just made me think about what I was doing.
    >>
    >>98900531
Yes, almost exactly the same situation. I actually kinda liked having the downsides, it was an extra challenge I had to overcome. I mean granted, there's a lot you can do with just dex, but you still need to climb and swim for example, and those are strength checks, you still need to act during the daylight, you are a small creature in a big world, people may not like kobolds, etc.
    >>
    >>98900581
Oh yeah. And my party really didn't like me either because, as a bard, I had a Song of Rest. Only he played the bagpipes, so the Song of Rest was Highland Laddy at full volume.
Of course it did become a distraction when the rest of the party wanted to sneak into a red dragon's lair.
I was tempted to betray them because my kobold did speak draconic and thanks to some really good persuasion rolls, managed to not have to fight the adult red dragon at level 7.
    >>
    >>98871604
Ah Kobolds, my favorite answer to any of the logistics that involve Dragons. They can be as goofy and as deadly as much as their Dragon gives a damn.

What I find most intresting about the scaly upright lizards (besides having Dragon Blood in them) is that they are not limited to just dragons. They could theoretically serve anyone who have draconic traits in them (so being a asshole). Meaning some random bandit could have a Kobold Tribe serve him, and the kobolds might potentially like him more then a actual Dragin because he does things like share the loot and give them breaks, the bare minimum!

Also, I feel like Kobolds (and Dragonborn) should be in Council of Wyrms if Wizard's of the Coast ever decide to revisit the setting. They can take the place of Dwarves and gnomes.

Also also, can you believe in all of DND canon Kobolds and Dragonborn don't have any kind of relationship? I could easly see a Dragonborn Knight surrounded by Kobold servant-squires.

Now I'm thinking of Kobold monasteries in Dragin territory that only exist to maintain the weapon and armor of both their masters and the ones of the invaders if they aren't slaughtered. After all, it seems like Kobold are only loyal to might itself, and there is nothing mightier then a Dragon!
    >>
    >>98900581
I to miss when races had down side to their advantages, actually encouraged roll play and if you didn't game with a bunch of try hards could make some fun builds trying to use a class that focused on their weakness and then try to work around it as a player. But unfortunately to many pansies didn't like the idea that their super special snowflake would have a downside and whined about it until every race was basically just a human with a bonus gimmick (stat wise).
    >>
    >>98902434
In my setting, Kobolds were created by the same process that created Dragonborn. Basically, whenever something really bad happens to the equivalent of the Weave, ancient dragons sacrifice all of their magic to mend the rips, but they choose a new form for themselves in the process. Dragons that wished to humble themselves to better know mortals became the first kobolds, while dragons that wished to inspire mortals as role models became the dragonborn.
    >>
    >>98902686
I liked that my kobold artificer is a scrawny little pipsqueak. It makes character interactions more fun

Yeah Kobolds having similar origins to Dragonborn is common but I'm talking about relations between the two. Kobolds are the servants of Dragons and Dragonborn are the soldiers of Dragon (reminds me of ants funnily enough). But what are the relations of Kobolds and Dragonborns? Are they also the servants of Dragonborn? If we follow along with Ants Kobolds would be the one that feed Dragonborn because Dragonborn can't feed themselves? Unlikely.

Now I want to see a Factorio/Songs of Syx style game where you play as Kobolds that have to balance answering the whims of a Dragon Lord and standard city-builder problems. If you grow big enough you have to answer to the Dragonborn as well.
    >>
    >>98902686
    >>98902833
Yeah... I don't get why people thinking a race having downsides is by any means 'bad design', it should rather be seen as either a
    >game mechanic that ya need to learn and learn to make the best of, and/or
    >a trait that helps you better define your character, giving them more depth and complexity
But no, everyone needs to be super strong now. A halfling is OBVIOUSLY as strong as a goliath, or perhaps even more... you see what I mean? It takes away things that are characteristic of each species.

If you want to make a physically strong kobold for example, I think it's cool if you really work hard to make it work somehow, instead of having the game just hand it for you. Even if you end up being unable to make a viable thing, you can find other ways to meet the same result.

It's important to be creative and be able to adapt. You feel much more victorious when you work hard for it, instead of the game making it trivial for you.
