What is the point of dragon-riders?

Either the dragon is intelligent enough to know what to do, and therefore doesn't need a rider, or the dragon isn't intelligent enough and therefore it's stupid to expect a tiny mortal to be able to command it.
    >>

Less of letting them controlling them and more of letting them ride like when you put a toddler on your shoulders.
    Also it's really cool looking.

    >>
My favorite dragon riders are those that carry short swords that would never be able to reach the enemy from the saddle.
    >>
    >>98871475
Presumably that's if in the event they get dismounted. And aren't thousands of feet in the sky.
    >>
    >>98871414
did you just basically shit on the entire history of animal husbandry? you know sometimes animals work together, right?
a human rider can get great visibility AND wield a secondary weapon up there, e.g. a gun. Also has the superior strategic mind, and yknow, somewhere to go
the dragon gets to be led to food, and might start to see the rider as a member of the drove. He probably has servants to care for the eggs back at home, so humans good. all meat-eaters should be able to get along, and some herd animals too, if we can break their wills to ours.
    >>98871475
    lol yeah those are silly
I made some characters once meant for a video game, all riding various mounts, and when I got to the big ones, I realized.. all of those guys need to be using magic wands or something, there's no way a melee weapon can reach out far enough to do anything.
    >>
    >>98871414
To make the rider look cooler. That's really all there is to it. 99% of dragon rider fiction never ever considers the dragon as an actual equal character, even if it is a character and not just a dumb beast.
    >>
    >>98871414
    >What is the point of dragon-riders
Being the equivalent to the defense gunner in a WW2 plane.
A breath weapon is great for cooking things on the ground and sucks the moment you're mildly less nimble than a flying opponent.
A pair of dragon riders with crossbows can allow your dragon to focus on what's important.
Plus the dragon needs a lookout and teeth cleaner.

I love dragon riders. To me, it's the coolest fantasy concept, specially when the dragon too is a person rather than just a mount.
I'm a player in a D&D 3.5e campaign where dragons are a really big deal currently. We manged to get embroiled in some seemingly cosmic level Xorvintaal shenanigans, and some of our charters are dragon adjacent in some way.
My Cleric is just a big dragon fan.
Eventually, I'll work with the DM to get him a dragon companion of some sort (if things keep going as they are).
My idea is that, as to not be super disruptive to the campaign, I'll build her (the dragon) as a gold dragon with all the vows, poverty, peace, non-violence, etc, and she'll mostly be a non-combatant that'll spend a lot of her time as a white raven on my character's shoulder to contrast with the black celestial one he already has.
I'm already working on a list of things I'll need to get (I.e. a magic saddle) to make the most of the duo. Even if the dragon won't be fighting directly, doesn't mean she won't be useful in battle.
Hells, we've had several episodes where we were on or flying ship and got attacked by surprise. Having a flying mount (flight that can't be dispelled) would have been so fucking useful.
Time to become the dragonlance man.
Thank you for reading my blog.
    >>
    >>98871414
It's political. But, from the dragon's perspective, the rider could just be their pilot fish.
    >>
    >>98871414

    >>

In House of the Dragon, Caraxes drops Daemon off so he can wreck shit while they fly around to back them up. It makes sense it just has to be done well (HotD only did it OK but it makes sense).
    >>
    >>98871414
The dragonriders are spellcasters, either abjuration mages or clerics of Tiamat. It's very expensive to raise and train your dragon, so you want to protect the investment and military asset in any way you can. Only wild dragons, or dragons that can shapeshift into humanoid form and have spellcaster levels don't need a rider.

ASOIAF dragonriding is the most interesting dragonriding IMO. The dragons definitely have their own intelligence and characters but it gets mainly overridden whenever a targshit psychically links to them. Its why vhagar and caraxes can tear each other to pieces despite liking each other when they had different riders. They linked with their new rivalling owners and also began to hate each other.
However this link is still unconcious for both rider and dragon so the communication can and will go wrong if one is inexperienced.
    >>
Dragons should look at dragonriders the way you might look at a magic hat. Sometimes you want a healer, sometimes you want an archer, maybe a lancer if you have a good lance. It’s an extra set of eyes, and it covers your back, and it doesn’t cost much because humanoid heroes are basically the same size as common humanoids.
    >>

It's cool. Oh, shit, >>98871420 already said it and it was FPBP. It bears repeating, though, so it's fine. Also this
    > or the dragon isn't intelligent enough and therefore it's stupid to expect a tiny mortal to be able to command it
doesn't really make sense considering that people do actually ride elephants, which, yes, >>98872545 did already mention.

Dragonlance books also had Kitiara's dragon as a major character - admittedly only in the later books where Kitiara wasn't around any more - which I kind of liked.

Yeah, I do hate this a lot. What's the point if it's just a glorified horse? I think a big case of whiplash I got was how in some dragon rider ps3 game they made it a plot point or in the backstory that the MC rider supposedly has such a deep bond their dragon who they raised from hatching and then late in the game the dragon dies and the MC kind of just goes whatever and gets a new dragon and that's it. The dragon was basically just a tool.
    >>
    >>98871414
I see your point, but have you considered what if the humans are the pets? so to the dragon an archer on their back is like a little automatic turret, or a rider with a lance or spear can keep enemies from attacking them from behind/above?
    >>
    >>98871414

Notably, as explored in the later books in the series, one of the most important functions of the dragon riders is public relations. The existence of a captain keeps the rest of the human population from thinking too hard about whether or not the dragons are intelligent, free-willed creatures capable of just deciding what to do themselves.

literally depends on the setting, but mostly because of the military strength derivated from somehow controlling the equivalent of a flying tank with a huge fucking flamethrower, in case of beast-level intelligence dragons, or having one of those for an ally willing to let you ride them in battle plus the power projection produced by it, like Warhammer helves
    >>98871664

    >Either the dragon is intelligent enough to know what to do
Assuming this, the dragon could do this to show that it supports the person and their cause, even when the human doesn't provide much in terms of combat prowess. Having allied themselves with the person, their bloodline, their nation. They acknowledge that the person is the one being a king, an important general or hero, and it's not the dragon that is the protagonist of the story. But by doing this, they lend their strength, their mobility, and their authority to the person.
