You may have noticed, if you have two eyes and a brain, that the sentiment for GW has shifted to largely negative in recent years. Constant price hikes on products that have not largely increased in production costs and were being sold at quadruple digit percent profit margins. Rattlecans filled with more propellant than paint and glue bottles cutting in size but increasing in price and a massive shift to turning their products into simplified, competitive games.

This had the diehard heavy user enthusiast upset for a few years now but in the last year even their light user who would splurge on fomo big box releases but little else every other year have soured. To the degree for the first time since covid the stocks for GW are being shorted and losing value rather than growing.

Internally this has been expected for a while and in the last quarter there has been a massive internal shift around products. Necromunda rpg for example was shut down not because of some Cursed City style printing issues but because leadership asked why print another Necromunda product line when they already have on they can put that time and resources into.

The recent Space Marine cull was symptom of this internal shift. Seen as a painful but necessary step to rework away from the "T-Sports strategy" that has alienated existing customers and not brought in the competitive tabletop game in the numbers it was intended to.

After Christmas and starting largely in 2027 we are going to see a massive shift in GW to try and rebrand Warhammer as a whole back to a hobby and livestyle product over competitive toy lines. Wether this will move the needle is anybodies guess as players are leaving in not insignificant numbers for newer games like Starcraft or Gundam Assemble.

All they need is to stop treating their store owners like feudal subjects.
The core advantage Geedubs has is having brick and mortar locations and they're pissing that away for no reason at a time where people are starving for places to be at.

Necromunda specifically would be interesting to read because thats next level retarded. with the licensing issue rumor at least making some sense

Someone who knows numbers, is this bad bad?

Like I know GAW shares were worth pennies in 2016 so anyone who had them then is now rich, but might shareholders who bought in when they started rising in COVID now be getting jittery that the rise has gone?
    >>
    >>98867906
Gw has been having an internal mishap for years now, and the only thing keeping them afloat are the paypigs, but even they are being priced out now. There is a delusional belief that they can keep inflating prices and stupidifying the rules with an endless cycle of updates to keep the squealing hordes buying. Reality is, u fear, starting to prove otherwise.

You don't think this has more to do with them largely being ~15 year old kits with their replacements being around for almost a decade?
    >>
    >>98867906
    >that the sentiment for GW has shifted to largely negative in recent years

Has it? GW has not gotten any of my money since at least 2007.
But to me it seems like people are far less hostile towards it and more accepting of its policies than they were even a decade ago.

Of course some people still complain about prices. But you also see a lot more people justifying everything GW does than you used to see before.

This is just my impression based on nothing more what I read (and don't read) online on forums.

on social media its pretty rancid. even their paypig shills that used to defend every choice are posting pictures of glue bottles next to the ones from like two months ago that were cheaper and twice the size and going "GW what the fuck is this bullshit?".

Its not been on thing but a prolonged "we are too big to fail now" death by a thousand cuts like in the tail end of the 2000's with the old CEO that got pushed out all over again.

If the replacement kits were actual marines then yes, it would be a simple kit cycle. The 'replacements' are completely different fanfic tier stuff. Meanwhile the Mk7 (and 6/8) marines, the models that carried gw, and all their ancillary units, are gone.
    >>

i hate the move is to double down on space marines.

    >>
    >>98868276
It can be mostly explain by GW seeing the numbers during covid and basing their entire investor strategy in a fluke.
As a result they expect ever growing profits with a model that was a self evident an anomaly.
Instead of focusing in a more reasonable steady income of old players and easier access to new players they are repeating the same mistake that killed Warhammer fantasy, but now at a company level.

I did see a HUGE red flag with this new nostalgia pandering 40k edition, then with the new-old space marines, the Legion of the Damned.

I like the direction but it comes 10 years too late. Shitmaris should've never happened and the damage is done forever.

Its interesting because currently GW probably makes the best model ranges that everyone likes, btw, but there's no hype anymore .. like 0 hype.

My buddies all play dead games like Mordheim, older editions... anything GW puts out you just know it'll appear in .stl form or for cheap in the second hand market.

I dont think they will die but I just struggle to see how can they keep growing.

Their media empire is dogshit, Warhammer + is a massive rancid flop. Their toys are shit McDonald's quality, and so is the merchandise

Tbqh an RPG is the last thing that necromunda as a product needed. Not that it wouldn't be cool, but people playing it would buy even less models than someone just playing necromunda.

If they wanted to sell more necromunda models, the thing to do would have been to not release the new edition they just released that ground everything to a screeching halt by deleting the gang rules for all gangs but 2.

People are exhausted by the constant edition churn. They rush development, it takes half the edition to fix the flaws and then they start all over again. Not mention having your Codex that might only be relevant for months. The transition from 3rd to 4th edition was especially devastating for AoS, all because of - three year cycle lol.

Also GW models are now very hit or miss. It's no longer a guarantee your models getting "refreshed" is a good thing - which again probably comes down to churn.
    >>
    >>98870722
    >Not mention having your Codex that might only be relevant for months.

This is what killed it for me. I spent something like $300 more or less on the FEC armybox with the new book included and it was useless in less than 6 months. Then a completely new armybox came out with a new book! Fuck that shit.

I don't understand the preoccupation many gamers have with industry shop talk. You need to broaden your inerests outside of tabletop if you're debating GW's fiscal position in your off time.

If GW sinks or swims, who really cares? All the shit about lore, squatting, price rises and edition churn was happening in 1999.

The GW model is to get you into wargaming and sell you a starter set, a paint set, a codex. Maybe you come back for some paints or a character. But it has always been about churning new starters. I don't think they really can do that with current prices so they will leverage the IP more.

All these people who sunk everything into Gw and never moved onto another game, era, scale, setting... GW has only ever fed you just enough to keep you coming back

So many cheap options in 15mm and 10mm metal

Like it or not, GW is earning more money than ever. Their profits are like 15x than they were a decade ago.
And no, the recent stocks dip doesn't mean anything. That was just a group of investors trying to short their stock. But GW leadership doesn't seem to be interested in playing those kind of games, so it went nowhere.

I have several friends who collected LotR minis when we were kids and they're interested in Warhammer but the constant edition churn has turned it into something I just couldn't encourage them to get into in good conscience.
The squatwave at the start of 4th edition AoS where they got rid of all the Stormcast that had been been in the 2nd ed starter set and had also made up half of that subscription magazine that ran over 2nd edition really bothered me a lot more than thought it would have. It had been less than three years since those models were being pushed as the recommended way to get into AoS and all I found myself thinking: 'If I'd encouraged my friends to get into Warhammer and one of them lost a bunch of models to this, how would I explain it to them?' and I just couldn't come up with a good answer, I felt really stupid and pathetic for having this dumb hobby. It was the last straw for me since while the End Times and Primaris were extremely shitty they were also done out of desperation while GW was in a bad financial situation. This was just GW nakedly declaring that they'd mistakenly let a bunch of casuals buy into a game too cheaply a year after they'd made record profits.

I never got into warhammer for the fucking game side of things, or the rules. I loved the lore, LOVED building/CONVERTING and painting. Now, the only thing anyone even cares about is building generic out of the box slop, barely doing ANY customization (in fact, its very heavily discouraged nowadays, ive noticed, so glad ive stayed out of the greater "community") and playing the game ONLY to fucking WIN. I want my split torso marines back, damn it. 5 generic poses and all. The "biggest" Old World tournaments are capped at 40 players and only ever sell half those tickets because the sub-community filters out everyone else by adding on layers of fanmade "comp" rulesets that change the game entirely and make it unplayable unless you're committed to learning them. The Old World design team doesn't listen to shit the competitive segment says, unlike in 40k, because the WAACfags just make their own rules. It's great.

There were two with around 100+ players last month.

LVO, the most prestigious yearly tournament, was only 38/64 players and I don't care about what happens in the UK because they're bad at games and have a shitty wargaming community.

This whole thread just reeks of cope.

    >>
    >>98874906
The pre-painted terrain is for events; it's not meant for the normal hobbyist.
All those images of events with L-shaped unpainted FDM terrain gave 40k a bad name
    >>
    >>98873993
There were plenty of shitty models in old editions and plenty of great ones in recent years.

Maybe people would take you more seriously if you weren't a hysterical retard making obviously wrong generalizations. Focus in actual bad minis and ranges (like say, Blood Angels)
    >>
    >>98875998
nta, but anon is right and you're a retard
Nobody likes 40k because of the game itself. It has always been the least interesting and most badly done part of 40k. There's plenty of better games. Battletech, for example, was already a better "game" than 40k in the 90s, and I played it with cardboard tokens.

I started with Space Crusade in the early 90s because I loved the art, characters, and lore. The game itself, just like 2nd, was serviceable at best. Just an excuse to show off the minis in a table. And nothing has changed since then.

that you homie? Nobody said you get into warhammer exclusively because of the game, it's a combination of the setting, cool models, and making new friends playing the game.
The only thing that guy was right about is the modern models look fucking soulless with a few exceptions (e.g. new Defiler).
    >>
    >>98876139
Wrong. I'm a nerd but I'm fit, and I don't care about your retarded culture wars.

I disagree. The setting is fake edgy retarded garbage. I was sold on it up until I started actually reading the books and seeing more media from it, my disappointment as well as disillusionment was intense enough I never bothered finishing my army. 5th was the first and last edition I played after seeing it for what it really is, a puree of heavily watered down sci-fi cliches, condensed into a spam can of slop more palatable for capeshit fan millennials who think blood and guts means 'mature.' Warhammer 40ks only real merit is inspiration for much more talented writers and artists like the guy that did your picrel ironically.

Gross profit is a misleading statistic. It doesn't tell us where the money is coming from or how it's being spent. It doesn't tell us which of the divisions and franchises GW owns are in the green and which are in the red. It just tells us that in spite of mass complaints about 10th and 11th edition, and the continued failure of Age of Sigmar and The Old World to generate a profit, GW is still earning enough to sustain its current business model, whatever the fuck it is. How do we know it's not profits from the video games they licensed 40k out to? How do we know it's not thanks to massive investments from firms that GW is very clearly working hard to appeal to?
    >>

    >>
    >>98876522
Gw is a publically traded company. You can see the breakdown of different streams profit in their half yearly investors reports. You can see that for example, licensing accounts for about 5% of their income. That's how we know, retard.
    >>
    >>98876522
You're a fucking retard. As >>98876578 says, we know GW revenue and profits, because they're legally mandated to disclose it.
Only the details about sales by game and and range are not disclosed. But AoS and TOW wouldn't be supported if they weren't selling. GW doesn't do anything at a loss, except maybe LOTR.
Even their Black Library novels and WH+ streaming service, which are basicaly ads for the minis are self supported and not part of any marketing budget. Which seems to be non existant, because you never see GW-related ads anywhere unless they're paid by their licensees.

As long as the price increase for the pre-painted models is less than the cost of getting them commission painted it should be an easy win for GW.

That's definitely on the agenda. They're going to want to pick up the gunpla crowd, that cadre of consumers who like building but not painting. And the competitive players who view painting as a chore. And lazy people, kids, people who lack confidence in their skill, people who don't have free time, blah blah blah. The only reason they haven't done it already is that they know it'll rile people up something fierce, and the technology wasn't there yet. This new terrain is reaching the point where they might start considering the option seriously.

I don't like building or painting anymore because I'm not a kid. So I buy painted armies second hand. They have to be a certain quality, which is always at least my own ability. They aren't lying entirely. Making terrain is usually inexpensive, but it requires time, effort and labor to make, and they probably don't have any of that to spare, particularly for a dozen or more tables. That means they have to pay, but a lot of these event hosts are dubiously managed small businesses or clubs with fuck all cash on hand.

Its just a situation where in order to get a good result it requires the organizer to give a fuck and put more ass or more money into it and its rare for those factors to align.

One of the other issues with full blown Warhammer retail stores are the people who usually go there. The competitive community itself has crashed the game in a ton of places. Having talked to a few former managers or employees, the main reason most stores don't let people play full size games there is that it always causes drama or huge shit storms at some point. It was seen as such a liability because of fights, broken models, people who start so much shit over how competitive the game has gotten etc., that it was seen as better to do that. Avoiding drama and making games short also leads into the secondary reason of how awful most players have gotten in terms of behavior and hygiene. The idea is to either avoid the full competitive guys who start shit with everyone or to at least minimize starting players' contact time with the worst type of fags.

My local store allows full games and unlimited time, so drama is a constant factor between some of the most obnoxious faggots who start shit with people because of some slight or people who think they are "the cool Warhammer players" who treat the game like high school and try to make exclude the one awkward guy at the store.

    >How do we know it's not profits from the video games they licensed 40k out to?
According to their 2025-2026 reports, of the £667m they made, they only brought in about £33m from licensing (which is down from last year btw.)

But I hear you, anon. you're going to say "BUT THAT'S JUST REVENUE WHAT ABOUT PROFIT"
Oh don't worry. Of their operating profit of £275m, only £30m of that is from licensing. The remaining £245m is coming from "Core business" which is the combination of sales of miniatures and accessories from across their stores, independent retailers (their largest contributors) and online.

Anything beyond that is basically quibbling over details. The numbers point towards that people are buying more, and that the hobby is growing. If you want to split hairs of "is citadel's rattle can division in the black or in the red", who fucking cares - things like these fit into a large strategy and that strategy is clearly working since revenues are up since last year.

As for the "massive investment firms", you don't really get how this works. Those companies invest by buying stock. They are having the asset they now own (GW stock) grow in value while also paying out a dividend per share, with each share receiving a dividend of 485p this year.

The only way we could get the numbers we do from "massive investment firms" was if those firms were sending people to buy GW models directly.

    >that the sentiment for GW has shifted to largely negative in recent years
Tell me how you are new to the hobby with out telling me you are new.

Brother, bitching about GW is as old as mosses fucking everyone does it. Its not new, you just notice it more because we are connected more then ever via the internet in ways that have been developed over the last decade.
    >>
    >>98867906
This was something i was warning people about back in 9th ed.

GW got deep into bed with the tourmanet scene and relied heavily on the burn and chrun method of balance that MTG does.
IE, put out a new set (Army) and its turbo fucking strong, so everyone buys it, then, the next army they put out, specifically counters the previous army, so every one buys it.
This method works in MTG because its a hell of a lot fucking easier to print cardboard then it is to make a model. Its also a lot fucking cheaper then buying an entire fucking army, and then dedicating all the time to build paint and play. It takes maybe a few hours to build a deck, and then you are good to go, it takes weeks to build, paint and get an army ready, not to mention GW constantly fucking around and "rebalancing shit" but i digress.

GW has been doing burn and churn and the problem is, everyone is tired of it, its hard to get people to want to buy new armies' like that. So, they burned through their customer base, and now they realized oh fuck, we are at a dead end, creating a new army/faction is not really a viable option unless we do an ass pull, and we cant write rules for shit.
    >>
    >>98892480
You forgot balancing based on tournament data that doesn't account for per capita because thats illegal math in the UK.
    >>
    >>98892480
Strangely aos has the opposite problem the last few years where new stuff is often shit. Not always of course, but happens enough to be noticeable. Gitmob and helsmith being two prime examples.
    >>
    >>98867906

They can try new business strategies but I've been boycotting GW since Femstodes. No more purchasers until they're written out and discontinued.
    >>
    >>98892532
I feel like AoS suffers from the problem of "No one really gives a shit." Every one i see playing AoS is very like, laissez-faire about the game, most notably the lore of it.

Which thats another entire topic the fact that GWs lore has been dogged on HARD over the last decade.

I do think that GW has run out of steam so to say.

what do you guys think of the slayer sword winner? I am pretty sick of the NMM mindset and seeing the same painting grogs gloating about an over rated miniature because it got an award and has pretty bad NMM. whats more, adepticon's ss miniature also sucked ass. What the fuck, why are EM painters not judging anymore? at least when they used to judge the miniatures where cool, now we have some semi pretentious smart felling guest posser doing it.
    >>
    >>98893523
    >Miniature comp winners
Unfortunately NMM is the in thing right now, and the way you win those is to paint to the judges tastes and wants.
Also scoring for miniature painting comps is very weird, its a demerit system, where they mark you down, rather then up.

I have no idea why anyone would want this. It's just going to be written as an extended prequel/justification/retcon solidification for nu40K. Cawly Sue will be a main protagonist no doubt, the story will still be all about fucking Primarchs and setting up foreshadowing for their Glorious Return in nu40K, lots of little stories showing how the Stronk Female Characters who were right about everything got torn down and overthrown by Stinky Pale Stale Males and that's why the Imperium went into decline ACKtually not because of the Emperor's death etc etc etc.
    >>
    >>98894154
    >I have no idea why anyone would want this

Sales numbers for HH books (and miniatures) probably justify to have another long-ish book series.
    >Cawly Sue will be a main protagonist no doubt
Sadly yes. And i'm sure the books will suck, but from GWs business PoV it probably makes sense.

That's often how corporate work. A ceo will not tell people what to do, he just expects projects delivered and a retarded department head will just churn out shit to tick that box. The executives were probably told that department was releasing a new product and the expected sales figures were just bullshit based on how the already in service game sold.
Did the game do anything special? No. Do it fill a gap in the market? No. Does anyone want it? No. Was there any reason to make it at all? No..... but muh projects delivered...
    >>
    >>98894623

Why should he? A CEO of a corporate can't micromanage everything, and obviously has to rely on the indvidiual divisions to function.

GW's products are focused enough that you could easily get a quick rundown of everything the core business is doing (i.e. the stuff directly produced by GW, not third parties) that you could easily get a quick rundown in a couple of hours a week.
    >>
    >>98892564
I will say, as gay as AoS is, it has virtually zero secondaries because the setting is shallow. Most people are there because they paint and/or play.

This “Last World” nonsense is the next in the line of GW desperately throwing shit against a wall to get people to give a shit about the actual setting like they do with 40k or Fantasy. I can’t imagine it will be much different than the last four times they’ve tried some big narrative shift, and nothing will actually change/matter. The people flipping their gourds over it need to realize this.
    >>
    >>98894920
To this day i still say what they should ahve done with the end times was, when the glotkin was about to kill Karl, he should have ascended into the celestante prime, the commit exploded and the shards that rained down turned into the sigmarines, and chaos was pushed back to Kislev and everything north of it was taken by Chaos.

Ash Kash Nagash should have been stopped or prevented from expanding from some way, and the entire setting should have remained in the old world.

GWs biggest blunder was nukeing a 30 year old setting then expecting people to jump onboard their new shitty totally not norse rip of setting.
    >>
    >>98867906
    >After Christmas and starting largely in 2027 we are going to see a massive shift in GW to try and rebrand Warhammer as a whole back to a hobby and livestyle product over competitive toy lines.
Doubtful. 40k has been an elitist hobby since 5th edition.
    >>
    >>98894920
    >I will say, as gay as AoS is, it has virtually zero secondaries because the setting is shallow. Most people are there because they paint and/or play.
It also hasn't had a hit video game. All the good fantasy titles have been set in whfb. I think it would only take one actually great game to start the secondary ball rolling there.
    >>
the morons at GW managed to send their playerbase to battletech who is dealing with a political internal shitshow, and they stayed there because warcrimes, good games with mods and memes.
    >>
    >>98896027
In this universe people would be complaining just as much and coming up with hypothetical scenarios where GW just makes AoS a sequel instead.
Truth is there was no way to "save" fantasy in 2015 that doesn't end in either age of sigmar, or turning fantasy into something that strongly resembles sigmar.
    >>

There is not a single game with hit potential in development in AoS, right?
All the upcoming Warhammer games with potential are 40k, at least those I can think off.
    >>
    >>98899327
Not that I know of. It's mostly 40k like you say, and some whf. It probably doesn't encourage game developers that past AoS games (the few there's been) have performed poorly.
AoS is probably going to keep being the mainline game with the least secondaries. (if you count specialist games I would assume something like Blood Bowl has the lowest secondary ratio)
    >>
    >>98899327
Deathmaster looks like it might be pretty good, but not big hit-tier and amusingly because it's set entirely within a Skaven city there's nothing actually originally from AoS in it.
    >>
    >>98896543
Never gonna happen, because developers don't wanna bother.
    >>
    >>98899586
Yeah, it looks neat. But it's not on the same level of a Space Marine, Dawn of War or Total War game in terms of content.
They tried with that one AoS RTS, but I can't even remember the name of the game. But I remember that I was disappointed because it did not have the factions I like in it, and only stormcasts and kruleboyz

Isn't that what the scouring essentially is? Its the time in between HH - Xenos should be around there, at least Orks and Eldar.
Potentially, this could become a very cool series of books and miniatures (since its pre-primaris), but knowing modern GW, it most likely wont.
    >>
    >>98900039
    >pick a corner
The problem is they’ve done that already recently with places like the pariah nexus. The problem is they’re not bothering to tell an interesting story, current 40k “lore” lacks the pseudo-historical crunch that it used to have. Combined with every narrative ending with the named characters shaking their fists because no character is allowed to die, the “narratives” they craft are just bland set pieces.

TOW is at least doing something interesting imo, using the aforementioned pseudo-historical storytelling, making new narratives that are at least kinda cool.

GW has been doing that in every edition since 6th, but nobody cares because they weren't featured in 1d4chan or became internet memes. You don't know it because you're a dirty casual.

    >>98900910
NTA but GW's campaign writing since then has never really managed to match up to the quality of the books FW was putting out at its peak, they're always too simplistic, too character-focused, or some combination of both. Everyone jerks off over the likes of the Badab War or Vraks because they're deep dives into the pool of autism that is writing 40k as if it were a historical record of a "real" conflict and they do it incredibly well, whereas GW's campaign materials often feel like a lore blurb from a codex that's been fed growth hormones and stretched out into an entire book or three.

I'd just reset the canon to the real life year 1997, and start publishing cheap scenario books to supplement current model releases, fullof stories about goofy wizards with puns for names being mutually racist against the local wood elves, until the next splatbook when some third party turns up.

I have this idea that it'd be good to "monkeybar" across the setting, have one incoming focus faction and one outgoing, so factions get long overlapping periods of work, where they can also have their relations to other factions fleshed out.
    >>
    >>98900386
Shame TOW is also using the new narratives to rewrite the pseudo-history so that Age of Three Emperors-period humanity is living in a zogprog socially progressive paradise with bow-wielding ladyknights and Stronk Female Leaders for everything and shit, instead of the fucked up slog of civil war and suspicion it's supposed to be.

Oh, please, paypigs are gonna paypig, and there's more retards trying to get into 40k than ever before. It's going from "the normie wargame by wargaming standards" to "actual normie shit." GW is going for the slow and steady growth path, not the "endless and exponential growth" the lizardmen investors expect. All of this has been achieved via total IP dominance, go on any social media platform and it's nonstop 40k slop content, 40k retards freaking out over the newest goyslop, talking about "muh primarchs," "muh speshul marine chapter," "muh citadel paints" constantly. People dumping entire pots of overpriced Tone Pro onto their models to show 40k subhumans that self leveling paint exists (something other miniature paint companies have had for years). They'll be fine, and I'll continue to not buy any of their products except for Blood Bowl and perhaps a couple of their paints. Maybe a display model. Expecting GW to fail is like expecting, I don't know, WotC to fail, or for a vidya example, Call of Duty or Sportsball games to fail. It's normiecore. Retarded normies are going to prop this shit up forever regardless of what GW does. Buckle up.
