    >malifaux 2nd ed

If there's anything I've learned about wargames, it's that everyone who isn't GW should almost never do rules overhauls that aren't incredibly minor and incremental changes, because everyone except GW who've tried it ends up shooting themselves. See: X-Wing 2nd ed, Warmachine MK3, Malifaux 2nd ed, Star Wars Legion (didn't die, but a lot of the playerbase left after the points overhaul etc).
    >>
    >>98868334
I know you are hoping nobody calls you on your bullshit. 2nd edition Star Wars was stronger then first and it was the 3rd edition overhaul that fucked things. Star Wars Legion had issues mostly going from FFG to AMG and first edition had so many dumb issues that remained till we got a proper second edition.
The fact Vehicles are now viable, more commanders are viable, and now we don't have a pure sniper meta has shown on the tabletop with more tournaments and players.
    >>
    >>98868334
GW's only difference is more wounds to tank the damage, i.e. the sheer market inertia it can coast on. It certainly had its share of major rule overhaul fuckups.

Because fun things are fun, but I get it. It's annoying when someone asks you to play another game you need to pay an app subscription for and need to buy a couple new boxes every month once a youtuber or redditor gets around to updating the community on the newest undisclosed changes to the rules. It's a lot to keep up with!

I think the most worthwhile reason to start a general, is to talk about what you yourself have done with your Quar.
I have been slacking of late, one of my lads went crazy and ran off, and the other has been hit by a car, and is a bit creased at the moment, and whenever we meet of late we have been too tired to do anything but get drunk and eat a big lunch.

I'd do that. And no, it is not possible to go all tankettes, I think. Cute little armchair psychology from a wounded fanboy, but I don't even hate 40K. Hell, I even quite like it. What I don't like is things I like that aren't 40K trying to chase the 40K audience. It's a lot like how in the mid-2000s every single FPS in the vidya industry was trying their damnedest to chase the Call of Duty audience by CoDifying their games, only serving to lose their unique flavor and dedicated audience in the process.
    >>
    >>98872801

    >>
    >>98872132
Gameplay is scenario based, scenarios are established to often modify standard patrol composition, and you are encouraged to make up your own scenarios, in which case, you may well play with the unit balance; it's your table.
There is a "standard" patrol setup, but this is simply presumed to be the "default" unless otherwise specified.

There are armoured formations mentioned in the background material, but the Fynrydhad tankette is specifically a "squad support" tractor, so it's "thing" is being attached to an infantry patrol.

    >>98873349
They are in all honesty, vulnerable to sniper fire when not buttoned up; we have played around with allowing them to button up, or not, since as a one-man vehicle they activate in a way that's halfway between infantry and a "crewed" tractor.
The problem with not allowing them to button up is that they can then be sniped fairly easily; us playing around with not allowing them to button up was likely in light of that, a misreading of intent, caused by tiredness and inebriation.
Google Gemini may have been involved also; never trust that nigga, even if he says something that sounds helpful at the top of an otherwise empty search query.

They are anti-infantry fire support platforms, and very maneuverable, but can be plinked to bits by anti-material rifles when you are fighting Crusaders; they have no way of directly damaging other armored vehicles though, as they only pack an MMG, unless you're using the Hobelyn Vally Ranger's variant, which has an overzised bolt-action rifle.
    >>
    >>98875233
Are there vehicle creation rules in Rhyfles? I'm thinking of picking up the new starter set soon, if it's in stock.
    >>

    Core rules are free.

It benefits from a quick reference table.
It's signature feature is your opponent draws a card with a value between three and five, doesn't show you it, and you have to guess how many moves you can make.
Officers can make group moves, there's a back and forth resource called "pluck" that you expend for various actions, and gather from certain successful actions, like downing an enemy or rescuing al ally, it has a points based force building system, but also standard force composition charts, so you can mix and match how you want to assemble your squads.
It has grenades, and bayonet fighting, and vehicles and "cavalry" and packs of attack "dogs".
It uses 3d6 roll under for skill checks, but variable d6 based roll over for various tables.
    >>
    https://www.rhyfler.com/files/CoRProfiles1026.pdf

There's also been a 'yuge stat update, Hobelyn Valley Rangers, new vehicles, harlech carbine rebalance and a lot of other stuff pertinent to the new releases; the tall hats factions were rolled in and updated also..

Not all alternative wargames count as a "fag skirmish game."
Many are real diamonds that deserve more attention, that Warhammer creates a "fog" over that means that the games that deserve attention and are really good don't get seen.

The typical /awg/ poster sadly is a very bitter and conflicted person. They rightfully despise the 40k crowd, but at the same time, they need members of that crowd to join their own gaming groups, because there is no other noteworthy community interested in wargaming, and most /awg/ companies do suck at marketing, and downright aim their product at GW Players, but not at casuals from outside the hobby sphere.

Their variant faction just got statted up.
    The Hoblyn Valley Rangers
    Their tankettes get anti-tractor guns.
And they have this beer-wagon thing, which also has stats now.
It buffs your Quar, but makes them better at fighting, and your squads get a guy with a long-range heavy rifle.
    The downside?
The Hoblyn Valley rangers are militia-grade, and have skill ten.
This does however make them cheap to field.

    Basically when the beer truck parks up, you roll twice; once to determine how "inspiring" the presence of the beer truck is; it makes you roll between one and three for "inspiration" effects, ranging from free ungobsmack to increased movement to a +1 skill buff, but also makes you roll on this here chart;

As you can see, your Quar bay become distracted by beer and playing grabass, or else go apeshit and break the action economy.
    Verra fun variant army.

NTA but how do you make friends after college? The common advice is "go find a third space and meet strangers." Game stores seem like a pretty decent third space to do that
    >>

    Start random conversations with people.
    You gotta seek your opening.
If you are looking for the opportunity, you will find it.
Helping people is a good start, a new neighbor moving in is a great opportinity.
Also, I meet a lot of people by smoking weed.
    >>
    >>98890675
This is certainly not how you find like-minded friends to play tabletop wargames with.
    >>
    >>98890723
I had a pretty regular game with at least two people on my street at different times.
The people are right there man.
    They're all around you.
    >>
    >>98890747
Still thats just an anecdote. Sure i can ask my elderly neighbor if she would like to play star wars legion with me. chances are, she does not even know what star wars is. See.. same anecdote, just a different outcome. What works for you, is not universally true.

But guess what: If i go to the LGS in my town, the chance that someone there not only knows star wars, but also knows legion is significantly higher. There is even a very likely chance that someone already has an army to play the game with me.
    >>
    >>98891604
The issue is, at your average LGS, the average gamer will want to kill you if you even suggest playing a game that isn't 40k.
    >>
    >>98891621
    >want to try Warhammer Fantasy? I have two armies

    >>

    >your average LGS

i dont know your "average" LGS, only the one in my town. And there are obviously a lot of 40k players, with regular game evenings for just 40k. But there is also a bi-weekly wargaming saturday, which is explicitly for all the other games. People play WW2 stuff there (Bolt Action mostly, but also sometimes smaller scale), there is a group for Infinity, some Necromunda is played from time to time, and just smaller games in general.
But this is not something thats evolving on its own. the store staff needs to (sometimes strongly) advertise those theme days, and also engage in them themselves.
There is a day for magic, one for other card games, twice a month there is a painting night etc.
The store is also actively sponsoring events in the town, so it has a bit of publicity too, which draws in more people than just the usual suspects.

But if the store is just a grumpy guy behind a counter, waiting for people to buy warhammer, then what else should happen there really?
    >>
    >>98891621
The LGS in my town has a posted schedule of events for various games but they also have a cork board for posting group finding and other gaming related stuff. There's a board game group that gets together on a regular schedule at different coffee shops around here, I'm not sure if they do any mini based games, though. They seem generally fine with anything that's pretty compact. Also a coffee shop I haven't been to that I've been meaning to check out is one that has a variety of board games that can be checked out. Other than that, there are meetup groups but chances of finding something for that are slim if you're in a tiny town. Oh right. Also check out game conventions.
    >>
    >>98889504
Miniatures are such a time sink and niche interest it's pretty much impossible to "recruit" your real friends after High School or college if you're lucky. More fruitful trying to find people already in your corner of nerddom. And 40k is the biggest corner there is, to the point it's pretty much the only game you can show up with to a random wargame night in a club or store and find someone else to play with. With other games you actually have to engage with the local community to arrange games, something hard for autists to do.

    >>
    >/tg/ is full of spergs trying to put the cart before the horse
Shared obsession with Warhammer isn't enough to make people tolerate one another, who otherwise wouldn't.
My takeaway from this thread is that /tg/ don't have the best social skills on average, and are trying to meet people and make long term friendships by connecting through hobbies, and mostly failing.
Whereas I; a surly Chud have no such issue, BECAUSE I have placed attaining friendship as my first goal.
I make friends with all sorts of people.
I've played Frostgrave with my fucking drug dealer for christ sake.
And Battletech with the neighborhood wigger.
And Necromunda with a sad sad alkie.
And Quar with the schizophrenic kid down the street which always turns into a fight.
I ran Runequest for my upstairs neighbor.
I didn't befriend any of these people based on the premise of playing games alone; I befriended them because they were proximal, and usually tolerable company, and we often found ourselves talking in any case.
Out of the wider group of people I befriended, maybe half of them proved open to playing /tg/ at some point, and out of those, about half again were up for doing it regularly.
Collect friends, friends are good for all sorts of things.
If you collect enough friends, eventually some of them will be open to trying your hobbies, because you are their friend.

If you want to build a house you have to lay a foundation.
If you want to engage in long-form deeply involved deeply social passtimes, you gotta cultivate companionship AND shared interests.

Why you think all the old lgs horror stories happened?
Because somebody took a chance on autistic stranger on the premise of
    >"Hey, he likes *PRODUCT* just like me, how bad could this guy possibly be?"
    The answer?
    >How bad can a bad thing get?
    >Yeah, that bad.

    >People who do not shower
    >People with no teeth
    >Thieves
    >Troons
    >Furries

Liking *PRODUCT* is not a basis for lasting friendship.

    >>98894802
    >Never complain about being unable to find a game of anything, ever again, you friendless gay homo faggots.

I can only speak for myself of course, but i do not. And i'm also not friendless for that matter. I struggle the most with that bit here:

    >eventually some of them will be open to trying your hobbies, because you are their friend.

I do not want to spend (or waste) my hobby time with someone who is only into it because he/she is my friend. That is similar to how a gf never becomes a real hobbist, just because her bf does activity x or y. They will only do it, as long as their spouse is doing it, because they care about them, not the hobby.
So if you are genuinely are friends with your dealer, your neighbor and the shizo kid, then that is fine, but i bet these three would never play any wargames if you would not ask (i.e. pressure) them into doing so.

    >They don't even have to be good people.
    >They don't even have to be suitable people.

And that is why i rather play only 2 games per month with people that actually care about their hobby, instead of 3 per week, just so i do not have to deal with people that are not "good".
Best recepie for a good life is to exclude people that aren't good. For example drug dealers, wiggers and shizos from down the street.
    >>
    >>98894802
You do realize that someone could easily just have both the ability to play whatever whenever AND not have to deal with drug dealers and schizos if you just ran demo games at an LGS, right?
    >>
    >>98894848
    People can surprise you.
    In good and bad ways.
Some of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had were with a Fabian stockbroker I knew and his repulsive middle-class urbanite "friends".
He literally thought a Macdonalds fry cook was a salaried job; and struggled to understand the concept of an hourly wage.

The point I am making is that if you can't find anybody to play with, the commonality is -you-.

If you can't find a game to play no matter what you do, then you are technically doing worse than Sad Alkie, Drug Dealer and Schizo down the road.

Let alone me; who gets as many games as I want by having a tolerance for a very broad spectrum of company, and the impetus to do the setup and organization.

I mean, I also play with a cop and a supermarket manager, but that's not notable, because these are "respectable" people whom you might well expect to have what is essentially, a very middle-class hobby.

If you can't deal with occasionally having to physically fight your guests, or dose them with narcan, then maybe you just aren't cut out to entertain the working and underclasses in the modern world.

    As for me?
    That's my local community.
It's what I have to work with.
And there's never REALLY a shortage of bodies, just people being too squeamish or judgemental to use what's lying around.

One of the greatest things in life is sharing the things you enjoy with others and also allowing them tho share theirs with you. It's ok to be the friend who's more into the hobby, just as there will be friends who are way into tea, ping pong or Czech cinema. Sharing with friends will always be a joy, and slowly, you can also get them into the hobby, much like how you can get into the things your friends enjoy.

The most striking thing about Quar as an outsider is that it treats itself seriously as a wargame, its rules have crunch and depth, but it also always remembers to have fun and create interesting situations for the players.

You find people that have never played Warhammer and get them into wargaming.
After a while of playing AWGs, they'll get a curiosity for Warhammer and realise it's essentially equivalent to mobile game slop with overpriced minis and pay to win mechanics.
Once they understand that the investment they've put into forces for several games equals a single small 40k force, they'll likely stay away from Warhammer for good and instead seek alternative stuff.
    >>
    >>98899499
Literally, just paint two starter armies and learn the rules yourself.
If you have a wide enough circle of like-minded friends, you will find somebody who thinks your little dudes are cute/cool, and wouldn't mind spending an afternoon slamming beers and blunts over a demo game.

It helps if you host your friends regularly; people come to my house to hang out because my door is always open to a friend, and I'm usually down to jam some music, rip a bong, listen to you bitch out your ex girlfriend, or play toy soldiers.

Not everybody is into it, but as your social circle expands (in tiers; not all friends are created equal, of course) you will inevitably find people for the thing you want to do, and more people for things you never realized you wanted to do.

The solution to all social voids is to build your tribe.
It ain't easy; people are fractious and weird, and will cause you problems.
But also, the world seems dull and distant when you navigate it alone.

Good thing owning IP is completely irrelevant for enjoyment of the hobby.
On the metrics that do count, GW doesn't fare very well. their minis are sometimes good, but woefully inconsistent and overpriced. most of their hobby products are fast interior to comparably priced peers. their rules writing and game design is the absolute bottom of the barrel for the industry. and their organized play and community support is somehow even worse than that.
