returning casual player as i started teaching my 12 year old son how to play as of September. i only ever really played standard during the RTR through Kahns sets.my son has shown some interest in alternate game modes particularly commander since he was told the local LGS does commander most friday nights but standard every other week.i have an old Eternal Bargain precon from 2013 and only ever used it once (bad experience with the group i played with) then i threw together a jank Bruna deck using theroes and about cards just to function as a half assed deck he could go against and figured while commander isn't a 1v1 format he can at least go through the motions with me to see if he likes that gameplay.think this is reasonable or is too much lost cutting down to a 1v1?
>>98864652There's some nuance lost but it should be good enough to get him to handle the basics.
>>98864357Which Star Trek series or film is this referencing
>>98864657thats good, still don't even know if i will be able to take him to friday night events at all yet since that was why i stopped playing originally as work made it hard to stay up late on a friday when i had to be to work by 3am the next day.but figured should at least see if he likes the gameplay before either buying a more modern precon or trying to take him to events outside of maybe standard ones.for now we been playing for an hour or two every other day for the last month and a half, bought him a ton of Reality Fracture packs as his birthday was just a few weeks ago.
>>98864582I thought it was a vape
>>98864652It's hard to get into the proper game of magic nowadays because of commander being dominant both casually and in terms of playing at an lgs, and standard being an absolute fucking dumpsterfire with more UBshit than actual magic cards. Commander is not a new player friendly format, never has been and it continues to get worse as the average complexity of cards and total number of cards keeps increasing, as well as of course the fact that 4 players rather than 2 makes each decision exponentially harder. That said, some basic commander decks in a 1v1 setting would probably be a fine way to learn a bit more about the game and general gameplay and what to do.
>>98864672i figured it would be rough to get into which is why i been playing so many games with him at home using mostly Reality Fracture cards and some decks using old cards from Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze, Core 2013-2015, Theroes, Born of the Gods, Journey into Nyx, and Kahns of Tarkir. i do have a tiny amount of Innistrad block cards but not enough to matter.

It's value in control or midrange decks is somewhat interesting. 4 mana do nothing, which is what it is, is pretty unplayable in pretty much all formats. That said, if he resolves and you don't instantly lose the game, most of the cards you hit are probably pretty good. Hit a removal spell and you win against any creature strategy, hit a cantrip and you're very happy, hit a counter and you're pretty happy. Hitting another Q is theoretically good but way too slow to actually be viable, you can hardly get away with casting 1 4 mana do nothing let alone two. Could see him being a one of in something like Grixis control in legacy, but I don't know. The last things you want with a 4 mana card is having it do nothing that turn and for it to have extreme variance, and this guy's got both.

Of course they only made federation as an excuse to cram 30-something new creature types into the set instead of making 80% of the creatures aliens and having alien tribal. This set really was the worst set out of everything this year. Even Marvel seems more novel than this.
>>98864652follow up to this: played through a game, he used Eternal Bargain and i used the jank Bruna deck i made, the game went back and forth about an hour more with him almost bleeding my dry with life converted into damage mechanics like sanguine bond but i managed to barely pull off enough commander damage to win the game with a prowler's helm and using pacifism on the wall he kept bringing back.overall he liked commander but was exhausted by the end of the game.

>>98864357"Cetacean Ops" started as a joke on TNG. In a couple episodes you can make out a listing for it on the computer screens, and one episode has someone being paged there over the background noise intercom. You never actually saw it in the show, because it's an obvious fucking joke that there would be whales in uniforms working in a giant pool on a starship.(Similar jokes: TNG constantly peppered with anime references hidden on computer screens, DS9 having a shop run by Tom Servo listed in the station directory.)Later multiple "NuTrek" series took the concept and made it a serious, canon part of some starships. Which was stupid.
>>98866642YOU suck, UBrownoid>>98866700tbqh it makes perfect sense considering the whale probe made cetaceans lorewise significant, and it fits the "posadist futurism" in which Star Trek was originally concieved better than anything from Voyager onwards. Plus I bet whales are great at plotting 3 dimensional courses.
>>98866700I feel like Cetacean Ops becoming a canon thing is someone not realizing they've done something so stupid that it utterly annihilates the suspension of disbelief. Lower Decks just kinda doesn't seem to care like I heard someone say that there's a moment where the crew actually commits genocide and then celebrates the victory afterwards - a horrific violation of the Prime Directive. That's just the same kind of no-fucks disrespect same as Cetacean Ops.With Magic it's pretty much guaranteed they're going to include the thing that shatters the suspension of disbelief because the people in charge just have no filter or their brains have been rotted with memes. The inclusion of Cetacean Ops and Lower Decks just kinda shows the people in Wizards have no taste - they would have discretion over what parts of Trek to include or not and they flagrantly chose the stupidest shit. Not the half-stupid shit, the actual worst shit ever.
>>98866002>it's realman who didn't know he still had hope loses the last bit of hope he had
>>98866750Cetacean Ops also appears in Prodigy, on the Voyager-A. >>98864865In my previous store, two guys started coming with pauper decks and slowly more people joined, until roughly half the store had people with pauper decks. In the current store the same happened but with Duel Commander instead, it was faster because people really wanted to move away from all the shit of "regular" commander. So yeah try to bring two/enough decks of a new format and slowly convert people. It won't be fast, and some of them will never do anything other than commander, but with enough time you should be able to find people to play with
>>98866801>If part of the license deal was that they had to include everythingThat's presumably not part of the license deal, unless they're going to include cards depicting that time Spock and Kirk went to a Nazi planet and disguised themselves as Nazis.
>>98866801I don't know anything about licensing but if someone forced me to pay for Cetacean Ops and then pay to produce a product in order to get everything else I would walk away from the deal. I don't actually believe that Nickelodeon forced them to license Spongebob.I think Cetacean Ops and Spongebob are both indicative of some stupid motherfucker in the product development department. Only the stupidest kind of person would pick the worst parts of Trek to include in the set and that person is probably the same person who chose to license Dr. Who. >>98867893Pure fantasy also basically imploded from major media after Game of Thrones shitting the bed because it's extremely expensive to produce. The reason it looks like there's a "war on men" in premier media is because the two biggest male genres (sci-fi+fantasy) are extremely fucking expensive to make which is why you instead keep getting "small scale" capeslop.

>>98868825>>98868869None of my friends was ever as invested in playing MTG as I was, and even then it was mostly a personal endeavor of mine. Draft was never my bag (I played extended and standard back when I got into the game in highschool) but the idea of a cube has been passed back and forth a bit but even the one friend who seemed genuinely interested is enough of a flake that I know the effort would be wasted. It would just be another box with the rest of my boxes of cards I haven't touched in who knows how long.Sorcery really got some genuine interest of mine churning but without anybody else to match that (combined with development of the game being stillborn) it's just another dead avenue.
>>98868900more than reasonable, i never cared too much for draft myself compared to playing sealed which is cost prohibitivehaving someone to regularly play with makes a huge difference, when i bought a house and moved two towns over from my usual LGS i fell out of magic for about 10-12 years and only just got back into it when i introduce my son to it last month, been quite good for one on one time as about every other day we spend an hour or more playing mtg, what was nice is for his birthday it was a day after Reality Fracture came out and the LGS i used to go to (it moved but still existed) had plenty of leftover prerelease packs for $30 so i bought several of those for his birthday and we spent all day doing rounds of sealed games then upgraded the best decks into 60 card ones.
