We're getting an official translation of Sword World!
>>
They really included a lot of stupid shit in the stuff you get for backing. Blind bags as an option is really retarded. At least you can do the build your own thing and just add the set of books and the specific extras you care about instead I guess. Going to probably be a bit disappointed in some localization choices, but that's probably just inevitable these days and I'm not the kind of idiot to delete my pdfs of the fan translation so I still have those to compare if needed.
>>
What's the track record of the people doing the translation? Can they be trusted to stay true to the spirit of the source material or should we expect aggressive "localization"?
>>
>>98859122
Don't know about any previous work they've done, and all the shilling emails for the other thing there doing were left unread by me since I had no interest beyond Sword World from them, but I do know they've changed race to ancestry and I had seen that they're changing the Barbarous to something else but don't remember what they decided on.
>>
>>98859122
Looking at their website they've mostly just done board and card games so far so we don't really have much of a track record to look at
>>
>>98859071
That's cool. I'll probably never play it, but it looked neat when I flipped through a fan translation.
>>
Been interested in swoad wohld since being retarded. See they've already got a lot of their backing out of the way immediately.

This video claims the Barbarous were officially renamed to the "Scarborn" in the localization.

All signs are saying they're taking this pretty seriously. The few changes I picked out, like renaming the "Grappler" class to the "Martial Artist," aren't anything to throw a chair over, I think.

They don't appear to be changing anything mechanically, anyway. Tabbits (the short rabbitfolk) are still barred from the divine classes like Priest. As well, the mechanoid Runefolk are barred from the Priest, Fairy Tamer, and Druid classes.

I got the deluxe pack, plus the collector's dice set and a dice scroll.

Barbarous was changed to Scarborn at first, but people complained about not giving a fuck about american sensibilities and they changed it back to Barbarous (Humanoids are called Humankin now though)

>>98859122
They apparently are working directly with the original creators to check the terms, to the point they have proposed some term changed and the japs simply said no. So expect for it to be a curated translations approved by the GroupSNE.

>>98859112
After a whole day of constant, written abuse, they added the pledge level with the 3 core books and GM screen directly to the page, no need to use the Bundle thing anymore.
>>
>>98861000
Them listening to feedback like that, both from customers and the original creators, is a good sign that I can appreciate. Hopefully they keep that up if/when they start on expansion books.
>>
I've never bought a TTRPG book before... Am I wrong for thinking $55 for a book kinda sucks? Especially during a crowdfund.

I heard the book costs $10 in Japan
>>
>>98861149
It's not the best price, or the worst. D&D's 5.5e core in hardback is something like $60 from a quick search. Japan has a strong printing industry so they get a lot of printed things pretty cheap, something like a weekly manga magazine costs just under $4 for example with volume releases being around $7 to $10 or so, with the original Sword World 2.5 books being printed in the same physical format as the average paperback manga volume which helps it be cheap.
So it's mostly that they're doing it as a hardback book that is a collection of the three original corebooks and probably using American printers for it.
>>
>>98859071
If you're dumb enough to overpay for censored slop that doesn't even use the original art you deserve to be fleeced.
All you have to do is look at how Waresblade got butchered by that Westernized hack slopjob release.
>>
>>98861149
Looking up the back of the Sword World books from a mix of ebay and other sites, it looks like the current tankouban-sized SW books are selling for about $35 each. Considering printing costs are not only higher in the US as well as needing to pay for the rights to translate and publish AND accounting for needing to purchase custom art for the books and other material, it makes sense the price they are asking for per book in the Backerkit campaign.
>>
>>98861177
Yeah, this international print run is not in tankoubon format - those small pocket-sized paperbacks that cut most of the illustrations and gives you the full book in a dense little package. In fact, one of the unlock goals (a crowdfund within a crowdfund) is for a tankoubon version of the 3 core books.
>>
>>98861188
I'm willing to at least support the notion of Sword World going global (officially). And if it's worth anything, the art director for Sword World international is the director of the anime adaptation of Solo Leveling.
>>
>>98861149
That's about on-par for large hardcover game books in freedom eagles. It seems high to me too, but it's the price I would unfortunately expect if I saw it on a shelf at a store.

>>

Japanese books are tiny, B&W, and have very little art. The ones they're selling are D&D sized full color prints.

>>98861188
They're using the art SNE owns, the Kadokawa art they can't liscence because it's Kadokawa and you can't get shit from them. The background table from the primer was virtually 1:1, so we'll probably get the lore of Zarkircleses raping slaves with unicorns intact.

>sword world
Huh? So are there sabre kingdoms, rapier fiefdoms and broadsword empires?

Does this game do anything interesting as a system or is the whole appeal that its from Nippon
>>
>>98861879
The world was created by three magic swords, who then made humans to wield them. Two of them stand in opposition of each other and chose champions who then used the sword's power to create various races (elves, goblins, ect) and that war has sort of been in the background of history.

Mechanically it's heavily focused on multiclassing and team composition, combat is pretty quick and decisive, and there's a lot of build diversity. I'll take it over the "I wanted D&D but Wizards made me sad so here's a new RPG" games that keep popping up
>>
>>98861879
>Does this game do anything interesting as a system or is the whole appeal that its from Nippon
It's sort of the quintessential JRPG "jobs" style system like you see in a lot of fantasy manga as well, with advanced jobs etc. Final Fantasy Tactics is an imperfect but functional analogy.
>>
>>98861993
I never played a jrpg what do jobs do? Are they stand ins for classes?
>>
>>98859071
If only they'd picked something slightly more interesting than "generic fantasy, Japan edition". It'll slot in well alongside Trudvang Chronicles and The Dark Eye. Maybe M.A.G.U.S or Dzikie Pola can be next.

In JRPG's Jobs are temporary roles a character takes on to learn skills (which they keep when they switch over to other jobs).

In Sworld World, you can have any number of classes/jobs. You spend XP to level up either a class you already have, or level a new one. The game has Major and Minor jobs. Major jobs take more XP to advance but are more powerful/foundational, while Minor jobs advance faster but are narrower in scope, often focusing on specific skills/abilities/niches. As you advance in a class, you get bigger bonuses when performing certain skill checks and qualify for better abilities/feats/spells that have that job as a prerequisite. While going wide with classes gives a lot of options, many general skills and abilities rely on your 'Adventurer Level', which is the highest single class level your character possesses. So you do want to focus on 2-3 classes. A character could be a Fighter 2, Fencer 2, Fairy Tamer 1. Fighter is a Major Class that improves combat performance, Fairy Tamer is a Major class that gives access to elemental fairy magic, and Fencer is a minor class that focuses on critical hits. Despite having 5 'levels', their Adventurer Level is 2.

It can be confusing to read in the book at first, because the information isn't centralized.
>>
>>98859071
Hmm tempted.. Though, wasn't Sword World ported to the english speaking audience through Goblins Slayer ttrpg already?
>>
>>98862208
Goblin Slayer had Sword World as its base but is flavored for the settings and is more limited in scope. Like Mouseguard is to Burning Wheel. There is a fan translation of SW2.5 that came out a few years ago if that's what you're thinking of.
>>
>>98862208
Goblin Slayer was based on 1.0, you can see the DNA there, but I'd say it's more like seeing the D&D DNA in pathfinder. The current edition and translation is 2.5, which is a very different wheelhouse
>>
>>98862289
They took mostly Sword World Mechanics but we do see some classic TSR D&D gimmicks here and there and people outside of japan thought it was all D&D.
>>
I admit I'm a no ganer and will have no group to play with. But... I really want those cards. Tell me it's bad
>>
>>98861149
It is pricy, but it's a lot more meatier than the original version with almost no pictures. The western ttrpg books are not common in Japan. Meikyuu Kingdom is the only book I can think of with tons of pictures and normal sized and that's the most expensive book to buy digitally. (45 dollars)
>>
>>98862138
>cyberpsychosis rules
You mean to tell me that this game has those dogshit "I attempted to acquire too much cool shit and now I have to put the character sheet in the shredder" rules? That's not something to tout as a positive trait.
>>
>>98862337
System has by default 5 lives for your character, with each death corrupting its soul just a bit more. At the 5th death, your character turns into an undead and its permanently lost.

Latest supplement book adds mechanical parts to your character, shit like rocket punches or mechanical spider legs. The more modified the character is though, the more likely is for their soul to be corrupted after death. So you can make someone that has almost no flesh left but the moment they die, they come back as a Robocop Zombie.
>>
>>98862960

Got a link to this book cause that sounds awesome as hell.

A lot of japanese games seem to do the your character becomes an npc monster at some point, Double cross and beast bind trinity do similar things.
>>
>>98862974
Sadly can't. The fanTL changed how new books are translated so only way to get access to the translated PDFs is buying the original, either digital or physical, and showing proof on their server. This to avoid picking fights with the official publisher and to support the original creators of the game (also they ban-happy with people sharing for said reasons)
>>
>>98863013

Well the book is on bookwalker I assume right? I could buy it and get the fanlation version if it exists, i am aware of the current rules they have for sharing pdfs

Sword World is Japan's largest and oldest domestic TTRPG, released in 1989 and still going. It is the home system of Record of Lodoss War, which invented the Replay (and draws a direct line to the Actual Play, like Critical Role) and is one of the foundational pillars of Japanese western fantasy. It is the game that, for all intents and purposes, gatekept Dungeons & Dragons out of Japan. This crowdfunding campaign is to take the game international (officially).

Mechanically, the system runs on 2d6, featuring class bonuses and power tables (table lookups where a dice result points to a final result on a check). As mentioned elsewhere, the game prides itself on its open multiclassing, where you are fully encouraged to take bits and pieces from multiple major/minor classes to craft your ideal character. It also offers three styles of combat, depending on how complex you want it - simple Frontline/vanguard, standard one-dimensional line with distance measurements, or the complex full grid.

>5 lives
It's not a lives system, it's based on hitting 5+ soulscars. Some races, especially Barbarous ones, start with some amount of soulscars and the way you end up with more is due to resurrections permanently damaging your soul. If you roll real bad on the table you can get more than one at a time, for example if your character is from the Nightmare race which starts with one soulscar and your group takes a while to get your body home to bring you back from the dead, with a bit of bad luck you could easily end up jumping to 4 soulscars and need to be extra careful from then on or if you're playing a Barbarous game and your character is something like a Diablo then any death is the end since they start with 4 soulscars. And then there are Runefolk who don't have souls to get fucked up so they just lose a year's worth of memories when they die and come back, and also can't do divine magic stuff since that requires a soul.
Also the player can decide that their character would rather not come back to life and have their soul fucked up and just have the character stay dead after a resurrection attempt too, which makes sense settingwise since soulscars fucking you up so much is the kind of thing most people would realistically end up avoiding resurrections for.

More the system that grew out of Record of Lodoss War after a certain point, the system they used for Lodoss originally was D&D but after an attempt to work together with D&D to make a setting book didn't pan out they decided to just go for it and make their own system instead and continued using the setting for a while.

If you're thinking classic Final Fantasy, that would be closer to the simple frontline/backline system, even if it's only slightly more complex by having a backline for both the players and the enemies each and a mixed frontline where the melee clash.

>>
>>98862337
It's impressive how you managed to use two sentences of nominal disagreement to fully justify the inclusion of those rules.
>>
>>98864580
That's correct. To be specific, Sword World 1.0 takes place in the realm of Forcelia, where the events of Record of Lodoss War take place. 2e/2.5e instead occurs in the entirely separate realm of Raxia. That said, the game and the developers at Group SNE wholly allow and encourage the use of "bubble worlds," which is essentially their term for homebrew settings - alternate settings separate from the game's canon setting. If you want to run a Sword World-flavored game in the Forgotton Realms, no one's stopping you.

>>98864918
>>98865110
Plus, for what that's worth, that cover is for a replay of a Barbarous campaign, with "Barbarous" being a catch-all term for what are essentially the (non-demonic) monster races of Raxia. In other words, this is a cover for what is basically a monster campaign.

I find it interesting that you've avoided replying to >>98863071's complaint that the mechanic doesn't interact with the rest of the game more, unlike Humanity's interaction with Empathy in Cyberpunk. Instead, you've chosen to make a bunch of assumptions about me that don't really gel with what that post actually says.
Since you haven't actually said what those assumptions are, I'm going to have to guess that you've assumed the complaint is with the concept of having a cap on implants at all and that I want to be able to scale my character infinitely, which isn't actually what that post says.
What that post actually says is that I think the type of limit mechanic where it kills your character for exceeding it sucks. There are ways of limiting implant-based power growth that do not require this. Here's a couple of Japanese examples: Metalhead has a simple capacity cap for each of your body parts. If you run out of space, you're full and can't add any more without removing something first. Ventangle has the more complex solution of requiring you to pay maintenance on all of your implants (among other things). You can keep loading yourself up, but you're going to have to take on more and more dangerous missions to keep your accounts in the black.
>>
>>98859071
newer anime art makes me sad
>>
>>98866283
Oh that's because >>98863071 is retarded and didn't look up the system before complaining about it.

The soulscar mechanic is deeper than just 'lives', it both physically effects your character and anti-monster defenses start working on you. Depending on your race you start with some, and dying and reviving is a guarenteed one.

Loading on too many cybernetics blocks your body's connection to the soul, depending on the number you are treated as having X number of soulscars. Getting to that level of load requires almost entire body replacement and is still playable.

Not sure what he's talking about with the kitchen sink thing. Magitech era has been around since Raxia as a setting was made, the rules for cybernetics are new but they aren't. Cyrecode explicitly mentions them years ago.

So I guess the reason would be that it takes a lot of effort to explain so many misconceptions at once. And he wasn't who I was replying to.

Since the system makes a big deal out of multiclassing, it seems prudent to post Guided by Cardia's breakdown of the classes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ2-SuYyxRg
>>
>>98864503
Also, being a Japanese title in a nation where it's harder to run longer campaigns, it's well-suited to one-shots and small campaigns (long campaigns still work, since the level cap is 15).

The localizers also like to talk up the Fellows system, where you can convert a character into a relatively autonomous NPC-esque adventurer and can safely fill out a party; not only do they serve as Sword World's answer for a player missing a session, but they are easily shared with the public, allowing your Fellow to appear in the wild. The localizers regularly liken Fellows to the Pawns of Dragon's Dogma. There's a reason there's a $2500/10 backers unlock goal to create your own Fellow to add to the base game.
>>
>>98872077
Looks interesting but on the other hand there's much less of class fantasy.
If you combine them you most likely become more of a mutant instead of a typical paladin, rogue, wizard.
>>
>>98872201
Picking multiple classes is what lets you fine tune the exact mechanical image of the character in your fantasy. It is much harder to get away with a single-class purist, though that's not to say you can't. Fighter is how you identify as the weapons melee guy (as opposed to the Grappler/Martial Artist's unarmed melee), but adding Fencer is how you show your fight-man specializes in light weapons.
>>
>>98872340
What if I want to specialize in big dick swords
>>
>>98872347
Then you'd not splash Fencer and just stay a Fighter, and equip yourself accordingly.
>>
>>98872089
>The localizers regularly liken Fellows to the Pawns of Dragon's Dogma.
Since Sword World came first, it would not be a stretch to say that Fellows inspired Pawns. A Fellow isn't just a pre-baked list of commands/actions with a d6 to randomize which action they choose (if you want), but also flavorful barks to go with each one, and however much fluff and behavior you want to add. They are not pure NPCs to treat like robots, but neither are they full-blown GMPCs.
>>
The replica Sword of Lumiere is unlocked and now available to add to all pledges.
>>
>>98871383
Nah that was a mix of culture shock and Kadokawa. They couldn't license the original art from the latter, and then found out Japanese artists are prissy pricks who don't understand timeliness.

>>98872201
Having done it, I wouldn't say so. So long as you're not picking classes at random you can tie things together pretty coherently. There are only a couple of combinations in the game that don't work together.

>>98871478
Magitech Hearts does have a dwarf sharpshooter who uses golems to cover the frontline.
>>
>>98872360
Or you could go Fighter+Enhancer and be using some buffs to use an even bigger sword and swing it even harder
>>
>>98872089

If there is ONE game that has ginormous campaigns aside from DND, that's Sword World, contrariwise.
Not all, but shit like Mist Castle sounds like six months or something.

>>98872201

You're not really supposed to. Rogue isn't even a major class, paladin is not really an archetype (yes, you can easily have a Priest+Fighter character, but there is not the idea of paladins as a "profession"). Hell, while classes are a thing in the narrative, they're not really treated like something the characters are supposed to pursue as a vocation.
You're better thinking the whole thing as like if you were playing, say, a "mixed" martial/magical character like a DND cleric and you're fine tuning how much you want his class to be leaning towards martial or magical, spending your XP and levels in accord.

Like who? Since you're so sure Mugen Gaming is going to fuck this one up, who do you know who can be trusted by Group SNE to localize and globally distribute their game?

I don't think Mugen gaming going to fuck up. So far I think they have been doing a great job from what I seen. Plus if they were trannyslators, I think we would seen it by now. I saw them on a bunch of podcast shilling their book and all and their big thing has been preventing bad translations, especially by those who try to use a game, show, etc as their soapbox.
