Holy shit, I didn't expect my hands to hurt so much after painting with airbrush, I had to stop simply because I couldn't control trigger anymore. Plus having to keep it high all the time to keep space between desk and air cable. I still wonder why airbrushes have trigger at the upper side instead of, by default, on the lower, like one would expect from "spray gun".

Okay, maybe I'm blind or something but to me, she looks exactly as if I would simply spray dark red over black primer, instead of spraying white over black primer in this whole "zenithal highlighting" style and then same red shade.
>>
i ordered my first pigment powders and im looking for any tips how to use them
do i just paint the dust on and leave some on there and spray varnish over it
or do i need to use some adhesive, in looking to make slightly dusty tanks with somewhat rusty tracks
>>
>>98854755
Yeah, the differences are minor. Don't bother with the zenithal meme unless you're using contrasts or similar transparent paints. What you can do, is basecoat in red (for example) and zenithal with a lighter red or orange to easily establish some basic shading on your main color.
>>
>>98854770
Pigments can be used in LOT of ways. Dusting it straight from the bottle is fine, but you need to fix it, if you plan on touching the model. There are dedicated mediums for that, you can also mist it with white spirit, too. Though expect the fixed thing to look different than unfixed one, that's the nature of the beast.

Enamel washes are imo better for rust. There are even dedicated washes for tracks.
>>
>>98854775
Yeah, I simply saw most of "big guys" on YT frequently doing this kind of zenithal with white first, even H&S shows this on their videos. I wanted to test myself if this really makes a difference and turns out it's not. Like you said, spraying one, darker shade first and then much lighter in thin, controlled manner, does much more.
>>
>>98854814
I think they just do it because it looks nice on video.
>>
>>98854770
if you spray varnish you will blow some away but any method you use to fix them will somewhat dim the effect
and contrary to popular belief ipa doesn't fix them, neither does thinner, the best way is to get actual pigment fixer

also, if you are only looking for rust check out dirty down rust, it's great, however it reactivates with water so you need to seal it too
>>
>>98854834
DD Rust is great for completely rusted out shit, not for tank tracks.
>>
>>98854755
zenithal has two purposes, one is allowing you to see detail better and plan your painting and light positioning and two, if you use transparent or diluted paints you can get a quick gradient on you basecoat, if you are going to apply a full opque coat anyways that second point is moot

that said that model looks like it has a subtle differences in some places due to it, red is usually fairly transparent
>>
>>98854854
>if you are going to apply a full opque coat anyways that second point is moot
So is the first point, 'cause you're just painting over it. The planning phase can just as easily be done before you prime.
>>
>>98854791
>>98854834
>>98854840
so basically if i dont need that actual grainy dust effect i might as well water down some acrylic earth tones and be done with it or just dust around and leave them like that
but thank you this has been most helpful
>>
Reposting my finished diorama, this time from the back.
>>
>>98854881
>The planning phase can just as easily be done before you prime.
not quite, the extra contrast of a zenithal let's you see detail a lot better than a bare surface or a full black prime, it's hard to see detail in some materials, like metal models or some resins
>>
>>98855014
i still like the wool sock but those fuel drums and canisters pop little too much and honestly look pretty bad compared to everything else
>>
>>98854962
>might as well water down some acrylic earth tones
I would advise against that. You can mix pigments with water, but it's pretty tricky to make it look good. And it will still need fixing afterward. Though you can airbrush very thinned regular acrylics as a base for further dusting/mud/etc. effects. This is in fact a common way of doing it > airbrush a highly thinned down tan earth or something to emulate dust/dried mud, and then start applying darker (enamel) tones in smaller amounts for fresher stuff.

If you want as simple as possible earth effects, I would again shill enamels. AK make great ones.

Anyway, Nightshift is excellent at this: https://youtu.be/IwI80Bv9BGk?si=oFS32NPm8roNMUwg&t=1232

Time mark included, it's a very simple technique that you can do yourself. And it looks great.

I've been telling you to that that from the start. forget about what jewtubers tell you just thin it until it sprays right and then write down the ratio in a notebook so you can reference it when you use that color the next time.
>>
>>98854755
how many coats of red did you spray? you can clearly see the tactical box thing is darker than the hair but you can still see white on it so it looks like your coverage was uneven.
>>
>>98855200
One coat, also "white" on box is just visible non-primed surface since mini is made out of metal (I don't pay attention here since it's covered with metallic paint anyway later). So it's darker probably because it barely received any paint.

That's my thought too. It can be hard for viewers to read a solid black or gray or whatever color model. But a quick zenithal makes all the little details pop and look really nice on camera.

That's why there is also a naked URL in red at the top of the meme image. Just write that down on a piece of paper and transcribe it into your browser's address bar.

>>98856517
>How is the turnout this year compared to previous ones?
Honestly, I don't know. I seem to recall Santa saying we had more than 100 participants last year by the end of it, but I am struggling to find where he actually said that. It's like trying to remember tiny roolz changes for 11 editions of Warhammer 40,000 ... I don't know if I'm remembering last year, or the year before, or the year before that one...

So far, this year, there are already 38 participants.

> I feel like overall participation in this board/4chan in general have taken a nosedive since last Christmas
It has, but even nobody else signed up for Secret Santa this year, I feel like it already would be well worth organizing and running it.

Oh sweet the edgerunners minis.
How do they feel in terms of quality? Also could you please post a size comparison with some common model?
>>
>>98856846
They're awful and I hate them. But I hope I can at least paint them up nicely. They look okay from tabletop distance. If you saw the posts complaining about siocast a week or 2 ago it was me.
>>
>>98856865
What's awful about them? I see some particularly pronounced mouldlines for one thing.
Are they made out of cheap plastic? Are they actually just single-piece models?
I can also see those huge ugly pegs on the feet.
>>
>>98856874
They're virtually impossible to clean up because of the type of plastic they use, you can't realistically sand it. Mold lines aren't THAT bad on them, but there are some annoying ones. They are all single piece, plastic cement also doesn't work or that would have solved the clean up problems for the most part. You'd probably want the pins and to drill the bases since the feet are pretty tiny. These bases are all separate, they come on blank bases (but that's fine, I just wanted nicer display bases).
My biggest issues is the faces are pretty mushy and low detail. It's going to be really hard to get the eyes and mouths to look right.
>>
>>98856885
>It's going to be really hard to get the eyes and mouths to look right.
I believe in you, anon. Knock that shit out of the park.
>>
>>98856885
Can you do a size comparison with another model (like a space marine or something maybe) so I can get a gauge on the size of the model and the size of the face?
I've been curious about buying these because of the release of the second season, if the models look mostly fine I'd be tempted to recast them all in resin and try to resculpt any fudgy details.
>>
>>98856898

I also did not care for siocast
on the main parts of the model, it was too hard for realistic cleanup. scraping lines was ineffective
on outer parts like sword blades, too soft, allowing it to go bendy, could not straighten out weapon heads on 2hers
entire mini in one piece, including base
I swear the first layers of paint went on different as well, despite priming in the same way as normal, but maybe I did something wrong. (on 40 separate minis...)

So, they're not like BAD. and for tabletop I think they're good enough and would probably take a simple base/wash/drybrush really well. I wouldn't want to work with the plastic again though if I could help it.
Anon reminded me, there are no swords which is nice, but there are some thin spindly parts, and that makes the flexibility nice since they don't break easily, but also the feet on some of them are kinda fucked up and bent and they don't stand straight if they're flat on their feet. I tried bending them with some boiling water, but it wasn't hot enough for them to deform and keep their shape.
I realized I only had this eldar head on hand to take close up with rebecca. I don't like the kind of faces where they sculpt in eye detail instead of letting you paint it on. But it is what it is. I'm sure I can make them look alright, I'm not going all out on them I just want a decently painted edgerunners crew that looks good as a group.
>>
>>98856874
>What's awful about them? I see some particularly pronounced mouldlines for one thing.
>Are they made out of cheap plastic? Are they actually just single-piece models?
Yes, oh god yes. They're a REALLY grainy Siocast, they feel almost like that awful corn plastic. This is post-cleanup and you can see how rough some of the models still are. The medic team pilot in the center has an extremely retarded mold line across her face that was particularly bad to clean. I also got a mold-slipped model but their customer service refunded that one. I'd legitimately rather work with mystery meat Chink resin recasts than this shit, especially at $5-6 per model.

Why is every social media painting video Spanish Airbrushcore and black latex glovesloppa?
They really fuck me off with what they're trying to go for, hence this post.

>I will now show myself mixing paint in the airbrush paint cup artfully
>I will use massive brushes on any basecoats to show off my le brush control
>I will not put down a single solid coat of any colour at any point
>I will try to do some ASMR bullshit when I tastefully spread out my washes/contrast/ink type paints
>I will do OSL out of the wazoo
>I will now shill my Patreon at the end

I'm not even going to mention this new trend of "slop on [new product] and show how it self-levels whilst drying"

I'm sorry but for 95% of miniature wargamers (and especially the lower intelligence GW drones) this is just not as needed as these algorithm chasers make it seem.

Most people actually need to learn how to do solid basecoats, appropriate washes, and being brave enough to do highlights (and drybrushing where appropriate and not just as a cop-out), and then with experience getting faster at such things so they can paint armies in decent time. They need to be learning from people like Kev Dallimore and Peachy and Sonic Sledgehammer and maybe a bit of Vince V.

Yet they are sold Patreons by Spanish Slayer Sword Winner #3482 as "aspirational" when they can't even post a miniature here that looks finished, like they're not even hiding slotta tabs in the basing material properly or whatever that else makes it look unfinished.

For basing plastic minis that come with a small round or oval piece of plastic under the feet, do you cut it or stick the whole thing on the base and raise the terrain around it? How about hollow bases?
With metal minis, how do you fill the gaps when the metal bar doesn't fill the slot completely?
>>

>>98858199
I cut off plastic integral bases completely, with hard metals and delicate resins I might snip at it a bit to break up the obvious shape and remove massive excess material, if it's easy I might leave some little platforms under the feet.

I use cheap wood or all-purpose filler from a tube for the biggest gaps and smoothing.
>>
>>98858199

>With metal minis, how do you fill the gaps when the metal bar doesn't fill the slot completely?

I usually cut off said bar completely and drill the feet. Usually cut the bar with wire saw since otherwise it's pretty easy to deform mini legs with nippers. In few cases where I didn't, I simply carefully applied texture paste in that place.
>>
>>98858199
I stick puddle based models in those hollow bases and just cover it up to the base rim with cheap texture paste. For metal slot bases I use extra super glue to fill as much of the gap as possible and then do the same with the paste again. So far I haven't wanted to put either of those types of models on a flat surface like metal or tile flooring though where that strategy won't work so well, but if I did I'd probably just replace the texture paste with milliput so I could sand it flat after.

And another thing, and I was guilty of this myself:

Why is it that when we get into miniature painting, we all have that "experimenting" stage which universally seems to consist of

>"battle damage"
>camouflage that just doesn't work at 28mm

and other kind of things of such nature

Would you justify airbrushing an entire let's say chaos space marine model gold just for the trim? And then paint the rest black?

>Would you justify airbrushing an entire let's say chaos space marine model gold just for the trim? And then paint the rest black?
It's often recommended for minis with a lot of trim and yes it can be a faster if you plan to do single color panels with no extra work. If you want to do some blending/volumes though both ways take roughly the same time, at least in my experience.
>>
>>98855751
Vallejo has a little set called Cold Greens that would probably get you close. I always have trouble picking out greens and blues myself. Warmer colors are no trouble though.

Is it me or is this middle picture not Tabletop Quality at all?

I'd say minimum Tabletop Standard is somewhere between the first "Fully Painted" and the middle image which to me is just basecoats with a finished base. Even just a wash would make it more finished.

Reading the actual text though it says Warhammer World want fully painted miniatures closer to pic 1

Look, the easiest way to spot a Warhammer kiddie is seeing someone freak out about puddle bases. Just glue the puddle down and base like normal. It makes me chuckle whenever I see a Warhammer player laboriously and meticulously cutting off the puddle base because he's so used to Warhammer models gluing bare feet to a finicky base

The superglue vapors don't really bother me at the priming stage because it can be painted over, but I planned on painting my bases and models separate, and since you can't use plastic cement on painted plastic superglue is the go to. Can I really avoid the frost by keeping them in the open with a desk fan on them while the glue cures? Seems like it took about two days for the vapors to stop.

Trying out a desert base to contrast the blue metallic. I somehow ended up making the teal/orange combo from all the 2000's movie posters.

maybe you should have used baking soda or beach sand instead of gravy

i did, i think it was just too much water and not enough glue
>>

your style of painting makes the chicken look much better.

>>98861737
why were you using water? put glue on the base and then dump sand on it. when the glue is dry shake all the loose sand off. no water required.

This is a rather embarrassing question, but how do you cut straight lines to plasticard? Currently I've taped the piece I'm working on to the cutting board, use a metal ruler and make multiple small passes before the final cut. Somehow I still bungle it. Is this just something you learn through trial and error, or am I missing some trick?
>>
>>98861920
Does your hobby mat not have lines on it?
>>
What is the best means to removed crystalized cyanoacrylate superglue on a plastic model without damaging it too much? Traded for some secondhand models and a weapon snapped off in the process of stripping paint, seemingly not the first time either.
>>
>>98861927

It does, but typically the knife slips happen towards the end of the cut, when I am already lightening the grip on the knife.
>>
>>98861975
Are you freehanding the cut? Use a metal ruler as a guide for the blade.

I was going to post this the very minute before the whole site went read-only.
Did some quick touch-ups over the piece, darkened a lot of areas. Decided to lighten the side of the bodice and paint black into the cloth behind to accentuate the waist.
Lighting conditions were slightly different for this photo, the difference is quite pronounced in person.
>>
>>98862077
I think the issue with it is that the character is wearing at least 3 distinct pieces of clothing, but you have painted them all exactly the same.
>>
>>98862077
Yeah, at least paint the bodice as dark leather.
>>
>>98862088
Yeah, I'm not sure the monochrome aesthetic really worked out. I wanted to do it to accentuate her otherworldliness, but she ended up just looking RED.
I'm not going to put much more effort into this model, it's 3D-printed and a bit of a snapfest. I'll probably give it a few more layers, then she'll just be resigned to a tabletop piece for the foreseeable future.

I appreciate the feedback on it though. I'm just going to take lessons from this model and do better on the next one.

Edge highlights are just volumetric highlights on thin, angled sections of the model.

I have a metal ruler, but I think my knife slips towards the end of the cut. I guess I just need to practice and practice... The blade.

you are usually not suposed to make a 'final cut' you make a couple pases and crack it along the line, a metal rules should be enough, you need more practice
theres also shit like picrel but may be a bit overkill

>What is the best means to removed crystalized cyanoacrylate superglue on a plastic model without damaging it too much?
For weapons, you can usually just mark and drill out the hand where you're going to put the new pin to hold it in place. The superglue will often flake off and shatter away from the drill point on its own. For any stubborn bits or big globs on other parts of the model? Hook the edge of the chunk of superglue with a probe or a knife, pray, and try to pop it off. It shatters easily and once it's globbed up the repeated reactivation and shrinking layers on top tend to loosen it a little

Good to know, I initially sprayed two shades of blue in succession over black primer and later only added white (light grey in fact) lines for little decoration, somewhat lore-accurate too, edge highlighted and ran little drybrush, so I was little afraid they ended too simple but if they read okay, then I can move forward to the rest.

So far "just" want to fill up few missing units I normally proxy with others, have two week left to small tournament at FLGS, hope I make it in time.

I finished the ork huts the other day and moved on to the four cactus clusters. I only need to base them today.

I tried using a lower wider aperture to avoid diffraction at f16, but I still think the depth is too shallow at lower values for minis. I'm sure it matters more for normal photos or landscape shots, but I wouldn't use a 50mm for landscape shots anyway and I hardly ever go over f4 or 5,6 when shooting normal stuff or f8 for landscape stuff. But for mini stuff? I found f16 better, at least to my eyes.

I think it turned out great, but they took fucking ages to do. Glad to move on to something I can finish faster.

Things I've done in the week between the previous picture I posted about this and this picture:
>finished the metal skeleton on the knight on the left, and applied most of its armour bits
>painted the basic terrain texture, and blocked in the little bits embedded in it somewhat
>fully painted the CSM on the ground
>painted the lenses on both knights' heads

Thanks guys. I didn't follow any tutorial, I just basecoated the coils with AK turquoise, painted white into the recesses and layered back and forth with brighter and darker turquoises until I got the result I liked. In case you're curious paints used were ak dark sea blue - ak turquoise - ak blue-green - baharroth blue - white

>>98862556
I hate how the yellow fluorescent look green too, but you can break the green hue if you add a tiny tiny bit of orange fluo to it.
So one drop of yellow and then the tip of a brush's worth of orange blended in makes it yellow.
Or if you use airbrush, basing it in the yellow and then doing an ultra thin coat of orange will cut the green hue from it and make it yellow.

It's like when you have a skin tone that's too pink, you can add the tiniest bit of green to break the pink.

I stole some neat WEBMs from the ladz over at /ic/ which explain the decoding process better - there's one of them in >>98856654 - but it looks like 4chan is having trouble with WEBMs after the PHP vulnerability fix.

Are primaris on 40mm bases now?? t. stopped playing when 8th dropped
>>
>>98863906
>Are primaris on 40mm bases now?
Some are.

Most squadboyz are on 32mm bases. Models with a higher Toughness like Terminators and Space Marines in Gravis Armour are on 40mm bases. Certain other kinds of officers and elite models such as Captains, Lieutenants, Sanguinary Guard, and Bladeguard Veterans are also on 40s.

The Terminator Captain and the Commemorative Edition Sergeant Castus are on 50mm bases.

I felt the same way too but that's how GW did it so I copied their stripes just to see how it would turn out.
