We're a couple weeks away from the launch of the newest big miniatures game, Gundam Assemble. With a big IP and a big company behind it, and planned future releases for months ahead, Gundam Assemble could overnight become one of the big miniatures games

Are you excited for it? Got any plans for paint schemes? MS you really want to see? Does Laura Rolla make you feel strange in a way you can't quite explain? Is your local shop planning anything for Gundam Assemble?
    >>
    >take gunpla
    >remove best thing about gunpla
    >are you excited?
    Not really.
    >>
    >>98850085
They're really small and not articulated so they'll be quick and easy to paint.* And unlike a lot of other wargames there's zero expectation all of your guys will have the same colors, so you can make each one unique and fun without looking weird on the table.

*I know about Gundam Artifact, they have awful seams and are all in dull poses and the sculpts can be a bit muddy. Assemble minis look way better to paint
    >>
    >>98850100
I'm just going to use these light and medium mechs for Battletech lol
    >>
    >>98850966
Stealing japanese mecha for Battletech? That is so fucked up
    >>
    >>98850085
Anyone who's assembled 28mm scaled gunpla knows they're fragile and unsuited for game pieces. No one actually wants poseable game pieces that are going to be squished into an awkward pose after a few turns of picking them up and moving them.
    >>
    >>98852814
One of the biggest arguments in regards of why bandai is better than gw is the articulated models.
    >>
Given how impossible it is to get Gundam TCG shit in the UK, I've no interest in starting to collect this.
    >>
    >>98852871
So? I don't care what dipshit arguments about brand competition people have. That doesn't change that no one actually wants to play a wargame with tiny poseable miniatures. It's classic idea guy shit.
    >>
I'm looking forward to it, but not breathlessly so. I'm not a gundam guy, but I've always liked how zakus look and the initiative system in the game looks like it has amazing potential, and with a starter for 3k yen there's no reason to not give it a try.

I am a bit worried about the quality of conversation at the game table. I don't want to listen to an autist loredump at me while he stares at my earlobe. But let's see how it goes.
    >>
    >>98849857
They'll probably do like one wave of decent figures before diving deep into the slop-filled well that is the SD Gundam series so no. Already got burned by their ccg.
    >>
I thought this launched a year ago. What are they launching with when they already put out the big OYW suits?
    >>
    >>98849857
    >Gundam Hammer
    :)
    >Twin-cannon balls
    :(
    >>
    >>98854294
No, Bandai put some of the models this game will use into pre-made sets of the Gundam card game so a lot sloptubers made videos on the models back then
    >>
    >>98855143
    >Gundam Hammer
    bro... that's beam javelin...
    >>
    >>98856508
I realized my mistake too late, I just saw the mace shaped object and defaulted to the hammer
    >>
I'm debating with myself over how I want to paint the models: matching canon or something else. Ideally they'd HAVE a special alternate color, either canon (RX-78 3) or from some spin-off or promo thing (Cross Contrast Epyon). But not all MS have canon alternate schemes, and most of the promo alternate color schemes are garbage (Cross Contrast Wing Zero).
    >>
    >>98850085
gunplas poseability is actually terrible for a tabletop game because they flop around so much and pop out their arms like abaddon at the worst moment
    >>
    >>98852814
28mm scaled gunpla are 12" tall though...
    >>
    >>98852889
Scalpers probably won't be interested due to the lack of blind boxes and the size of the merchandise. A $120 MSRP booster box they sell for $200+ is 3" by 4" by 5". A $35 starter set is twice that size.
    >>
I mean the miniatures look great, but because Bandai went whole-hog on putting a bunch of different suits from different series together it kinda kills the idea of being able to play out "historical" battles and scenarios, something I was really excited about when I first heard the idea.
    >>
    >>98856751
japanese game scene skews much more towards the casual crowd because wargames are already super niche as is, and boardgames as a whole are smaller than card games due to the logistics of playing in tokyo

and the appeal to gundam players is collectible aspect of "play with your favorite mech" and going full historical wargame would require OYW fans to never be able to play against G gundam or wing gundam fans because you would need something like 60 leos to match a single wing gundam if playing by canon stats

there just isnt a market in japan for "battletech-but-wit-gundam" because those who are in it just for collecting already have gunpla
and those who want a game dont want to have to paint a hundred zakus to be able to match the one guy who bought the nu gundam in a fair fight
    >>
why not just play this sized up with the articulating models
    >>
I'm looking forward to the game but am concerned it's not going to be played where I live.
    >>
    >>98849857
The game looks like a total joke. Generic system reused from the world of warcraft miniatures game, no attempt made to use a system that reflects combat in the actual shows. I won't be playing it.

    Models look great though.
    >>
    >>98858395
People complain about modern warhammer's focus on a standardized format and lack of verisimilitude and this game is coming out of the gate with those characteristics dialed to max, but people are going to apologize for it endlessly becsuse its Japanese.
    >>

It's also that gundam is a big community, but it's spread out. If you make a hardline UC sim game, that's a big chunk of the remaining audience walking out the door. It's a pity but it's why everything they make is a big crossover thing now.

How many different Zeon mechs are going to be available at launch? I've seen Char's Zaku II in the starter box, but is there anything else? Goufs? Rick Doms? Gelgoogs? Mass produced Big Zams? Zakrellos?

A Hygogg and Kampfer would be neat since Leo and Tallgeese is already confirmed. Might pick some up to paint since they're fairly cheap but no one nearby likes mecha, not even BTech
    >>
    >>98859621
There is a box with the Gouf, Ex03 I think. Also the really expensive Deluxe set 01 include some Zeon units, like the Zeong, Zaku I and Rick Dom. Appart from that... don't expect many, the Sazabi will be released later, but most of the releases are different flavours of gundam.

The tabletop conversion of SD Gundam Generation did okay too, although that got helped along by the ads in all the gashapon.

    >>98858555
I've got 5 full teams of Zakus in 1/400 plus Minelayers, an aquatic team, multiple mobile armors, and some other fun stuff. I've also done conversions for most of Midnight Fenrir's suits (been looking for a better rifle for the Zaku 1 sniper and the Gouf-A sniper). I still need to recast more tanks for both my Feddies and my Zekes though.

Using articulated models for gaming pieces of this size would be a nightmare. They're two completely different things and can't really be used as a comparison.
The one thing I did wish Games Workshop would adopt from Bandai was making sprues with no mold lines. Bandai can do it AND release kits at a much lower price too.
But articulating minis for gaming? Fuck that

Y'all never done more than cut, sand and snap a kit, have ya? We've been past the floppy parts problem for years with just joint stiffener solution pens, paint or a coat of glue left to dry before assembly. Day 1 rookie techniques. The diorama crowd even goes full Monty and glues their kits into fixed poses with highly detailed bases, like 40k players.
    >>
    >>98860558
I'm almost certain this was something Okawara originally drew for one of his previous collaborations with Tomino like Daitarn or Zambot that got left on the cutting room floor and brought back because of the show's infamously tight budget and schedule.
    >>
    >>98860558

I mean, Zeon R&D are all super-robot tier mad scientists that only the vaguely consistent laws of physics stopped from taking over the earth. Not everything is going to work, and a lot of it is going to look stupid.

For every one Zakrello, we had Zeon developing nuclear powered MS carrying airplanes that went from blueprints to mass production in less than three months. Marine Mobile Suits that went from nothing to being the first Zeon MS to pack Beam Weapons in less than 6 months. We got things like the Adzam flying about, the increasingly ridiculous Mobile Armours from 8th MS Team. The literally reverse engineered the gundam into the Gelgoog in less than 4 months AND THAT WAS WITH A FUCKING CONTEST BETWEEN IT AND THE GYAN.
The turnaround time of Zeon's R&D was absolutely fucking ridiculous. This is basically Space Nigeria vs the entire world here and their R&D is just going berzerk throwing out functional, sometimes ground-breaking war-technology in months that any other nation would have taken years of politicking and backbiting to develop.

It's absolutely no wonder the whole thing was Operation Paperclipped into Anaheim by the Federation. There's Gold Egg laying Geese and then there's the Egg's those guys would be laying, continuously, for almost 50 years. Protagonist Gundam after Gundam.
    >>
    >>98863240
Anyone who's painted one knows the last thing you want is for them to be constantly grinding their joints and rubbing specs of paint off from contact. I already get enough of that with metal minis. Painted + poseable is a war with entropy.
    >>
    >>98858099
There's no real reason you'd want to play this game other than because of its brand and models. The game system itself is just a non-specific competitive boardgame system, it doesn't have any mechanics that are related to mecha generally or gundam in particular. If you are going to use different models you may as well play a different game.
    >>
    >>98849857
I honestly don't know what the fuck is going to happen with this. The models look great and Gundam is a super strong brand, but the game is just 100% a boardgame and the release model looks like it's structured that way as well. There's no reason why someone should buy multiples of any of the sets because it's designed for strictly small scale games with each unit being different, so it isn't compatible with the miniature wargame business model that makes keeping the same basic kits in production for decades profitable.

So it'll probably come out, go through its expansion waves, then go out of production as sales trail off, right? I don't really see how it would be sustainable.
    >>
    >>98863902
It's a big enough IP with enough leadup that it's going to get scalped to hell and back so Bandai should be profitable no matter how bad the game could be and the scalping should go on for the first couple of sets based on the tcg's scalping. Then yah probably trail off and die in a couple of years or something.

I bought the starter box at a convention. Honestly for 35 bucks it comes with a lot. 6 miniatures, game mat, little cardboard terrain, dice, etc. the minis are push fit and i think after putting everything together some parts should be glued. Also the eyes look like they will be a pain to paint. I havent played yet but heres a look at the size difference with a space marine.

This is going to last a year at most before typical Bandai balancing comes into play and by two years it'll be a complete mess.
    >>
    >>98865245

that goes for every ongoing wargame. Honestly with how badly GW is doing this game has a chance. Also its easier on the wallet.

    >So it'll probably come out, go through its expansion waves, then go out of production as sales trail off, right? I don't really see how it would be sustainable.
Yes please. Please just make a single little game with a few expansions and then feel free to move on. Not everything needs to be a big endless bloat with infinite monetization opportunities.
    >>
    >>98863280
iirc, the reason why zeon started crapping out 20 different types of MS and MA in the latter half of the show was because they were lagging behind in toy sales
so they tried to get more interest in the show by falling back on tried and true super robot gimmicks like monster-of-the-week

Sure had fun painting this one, but they're not the best minis I have ever worked with. Plastic is weirdly hard, models are super duper monopose, and detail is lacking. Still, what detail there is is generally pretty sharp, fit is basically perfect, and mold lines are minimal. If they were half or even two thirds of the price they'd be unequivocal winners.
    >>
    >>98865885
    That's the neat part.
    You don't.
    >>
    >>98864574
That was my assessment. It will work as a board game, but it doesn't seem like there's any way it could end up occupying LGS shelf space like 40k, battletech or AoS, etc because sales of individual sets are basically capped at 1 per customer.

respawning is a bit of a necessity, since they are going for 3v3 or 2v2 as the standard

How long from release will it take before trustworthy and honest reviews come in to gauge whether it is a genuinely good tabletop game?
I expect lots of clickbait "warhammer killer" type online stuff being made for this.

Perhaps Bandai is testing the waters before trying to take on GW in the tabletop miniature wargaming battlefield? GW needs a proper number 2 competitor to hopefully push for innovations for the miniature enthusiasts to benefit from.

I was describing negative traits characteristics, as in a lack of. Gundam Assemble is designed with the exact characteristics that people who complain about warhammer criticise warhammer for, (gameyness and compfaggotry), as it's only characteristics. It's not even a new system, it's a repackaged version of the WoW miniatures game, so not only is it shitty, it's also low effort.

But because its Japanese cue a bunch of totally unqualified, incorrect and/or irrelevant statements about the Japanese miniature wargaming market that try to justify why its okay for a Japanese company to make a bad wargaming product, as if a customer or potential customer will, or should give a shit about that, or if what they're saying is even true at all.

why is a game being a game a bad thing?
    >>
    >>98878189
It's a competitive board game like monsterpocalypse or warhammer underworlds. In terms of being a thing that competes with warhammer or battletech it's kind of DOA due to having an extremely narrow scope of gameplay.
    >>
The game looks neat, but I kind of wish it was more of a skirmish game rather than what seems to be a board card game hybrid.
    >>
    >>98881121
Each player has a deck of 9 cards an only see 6 of them. Although I can see the catrs having an impact, I'd hardly saynthe game is akin to a "card game" as ot lacks a lot characteristics of those games (wh underworlds _is_ a board card game hybrid)

With that said, I can see cards becoming part of the meta and people buying stuff just for a single card, kinda like what happened with x-wing.

It is a board game, though. Its way more mode board-game-like than classic battletech and catalyst used.to call classic battletech "the voard game version"
    >>
why does everyone hate that its like a board game?
if its meant to be a fast, casual, easy to learn game then building it like a board game seems like a logical choice, especially since its aimed at the japanese market
    >>
    >>98883662
Because the game is a boardgame, but type of model kit the game is based on is associated with wargames. People who like wargames don't necessarily like board games.

This kind of game isn't an unknown category, there are other examples, but they substantially less popular than wargames with people who buy these types of miniatures.
    >>
    >>98883662
You are asking people who want to play arma, or at least battlefield, why they don't like that the game is overwatch. They see gundam miniatures and like that, but are annoyed that the game is a genre they're fundamentally disinterested in.
    >>
    >>98883777
theres just disagreeing with the direction they are going, which is to appeal to the japanese casual audience who are by far the largest demographic
but acting like it should have appealed to hardcore battletech fans instead of just accepting the game isnt for them sounds immature

Looking forward to customizing some EXVS themed 2v2 scenarios, which I imagine is where they partly drew inspiration from. Hopefully they provide some support on making custom scenarios, but considering it's just a matter off shuffling around token and elevation placements it'll probably be minimal.

    >Got any plans for paint schemes?
Been trying to figure out if I want do custom color schemes at all, I can probably do it for the mass produced suits but I don't know if I'll do the same for the unique Gundam ones, especially since's it'll be my first time trying hand painting. Atleast the RX78 has a lot of somewhat official color schemes I can use

The non-collectible miniatures market is almost entirely north America and Europe, and is fairly small in Japan, so no, that is not "the largest demographic", and Bandai don'e seem to think so either. The game is designed by an American, is extensively marketed in English, and is promoted at trade shows and conventions in the US, it's very clearly intended as an export product. There's a fairly clear logical progression from Bandai collaborating with Games Workshop to make space marine heroes to Gundam Assemble happening. GW does most of its sales outside of the UK, despite being a manufacturer in a small island nation that specializes in making plastic injection molded model kits, I think you get the picture. The problem is that it's looks like exactly the wrong type of game for someone who is familiar with wargames and interested in Gundam, and they're coming into a market dominated by Warhammer, which is a near monolith and has various smaller scale sub-games, and which has a robot game with a hex grid already on shelves and which is significantly more concerned with being about robots in Battletech, which has a simple and fast sub game. The game is super basic, very small scale, and if it didn't have gundam branding on it you'd have no clue it was supposed to be about giant robots. If you compare it to the starcraft game that came out recently where they made a huge effort to make the game feel like a starcraft game it's the exact opposite. It seems like the gundam evolution of tabletop games.

NTA but on the flip side, it means it's the right type of game for people familiar with Gundam and interested in tabletop gaming, ie. the numerous casual Gunpla builders that they are obviously targeting at with the supposedly easy to use new set of paints, simplified rules compared to a proper wargame, and the extensive PR effort of reaching out to well known gunpla related (not tabletop gaming) youtube channels to visit their invitation only events. That demographic is indeed more concentrated within Japan like anon said, I doubt they considered the wargame crowd beyond making miniatures that happen to be similarly sized to the most popular IP already available

Wargamimg was always a game of tinkerers. Both on hobby side and in the game/rule side.

Aparently, warhammer has damaged the hobby in way that stifled any creativity.

    >Are you excited for it?
I was more excited before i found out about the modern James monopose. I just want reasonable sized gunpla bros, i do not really care for the specific game. The normal ones are too big, artifacts are perma sold out, and the other small ones are SD(very much not into that). I'll try getting some and experiment with cutting and reposing but if the process proves to be too annoying for me then my interaction with assemble will be rather brief.
    >>98852814
It is customary to pick up models by the base anon-kun.
    >>98856580
    >>98863225
Anons, i would like to complain about how gundam assemble would be better off if bandai started planning with reposable, scalable kits.
    >Picrel
First off google zvezda 1/100 tank kit. This is roughly the form and size of the package possible, costs aound 3-4 euros per pack. Top left are sprues for a Tiget tank. Top mid is four guys + shittons of accessories, now it has a surface area greater than the zvezda pack i'm just including it to preempt any "too complex, too difficult" excuses from anons trying to defend Bandais current trajectory. If a literal who company can cram four science fantasy spacemen + shitton of gun options + heads + accesorries bandai can cram 1.
    >>98865231
By reasonably sized gunpla i mean this anons pic. Top mid makes dudes either half or at most chest level of a marine in that one. Bodyarts for my dream gunpla would be larger than those but not by too much. So what we are looking at bottom of my pic is a rough sketch i made by slicing up wiki puctures. On the sprue the parts would be either at side profile or looking at you directly. The logic is male into female jacks. For the head to plug into the torso there needs to be a cup shape that accepts the neck peg. But since the chest and back are facing the walls of the metal mold creating a cup for the head would tear apart the piece when the mold halves try to pull away after the plastic injection.
    2k char limit
    >>
    >>98891195
So we separate the torso(can be snapfit) to get four female jacks at neck, shoulders and pelvis. Those are all single piece(aside from the V fin) male jack equipped parts. The male jacks are either rounded pegs or spheres to act like joints which would allow the limbs to be glued at most angles and allow for most poses. Modern plastic glues are fairly powerul so you would need towait for five seconds for the position to catch. It would be awkward at first but if bandai can knock out entry grades for ten dollarydoos it can do 3-4 buck, palm sized boxes so practice is not at a premium. After that we have two piece split lower legs(same reason as the torso) with two female jacks for upper legs and feet (which are rotated to face the wall of the mold). After that we have the same for the lower arms and then wrists/weapon holding wrists. Now it is possible to avoid splitting the lower arm if we accept flat stumps for the wrist connections, and as long the connection to the upper arm is reveals the ball joint on a fully extended arm. However with zeons bell lower legs the splits will be mandatory anyway so better plan os separating the lower legs some what. The shoulder pads would have a square "u" profile so those can be single piece. The gun and shield bits are obvoius which brings us to the power diapers/skirts of the OYW suits. The pelvis on my pic has the skirt panels for recognisibility but the panels are aither molded to the upper leg with the hind panel being part of the pelvis. If gunpla fans can put an eye sticker on an eye socket with some tweezers then they should be able to glue seperate diaper panels as the final assembly steps. The skirts for the core grunts are the biggest hastle, but a gelgoog just has a wedge pelvis with some shoulder pads for dide skirts, so if you can get the GM/Zaku pelvises sortef it is smooth sailing for most suits of most verses. Female jack containing parts snapfit, male to female connections glue. 2k again
    >>
    >>98891195
At least be realistic and ask for something like gundam + some GMs pack, with legs and arms that can be swapped. Not this robotech miniatures bullshit.
    >>
    >>98891350
Lastly that leaves us with alternate gear/guns and those can be sold separate as packs. The reason i combined the gm and the rx-78 is because Bandais office workers love to overfocus on protag suits and players who need the gm will have to buy a gundam which would make the execs cream themselves, and with the gundam needing the space for a rifle/shield/ beam spray gun/alt heads will help to determine how much sqare area we need or have to work with for most kits. A zaku/dom may have fatter bell shape lower legs which means more space but they only need the one gun so it should even out. And they can also release a "guns of the OYW/insert timeline here" misc. rocket launchers, bazookas smgs to cover the combinatorics of characters, gear. Only one mold, small, stackable easy to mass produce, ship and stock. "I want chars zaku" kit, "i want a different pose" kit, " i want an arbitrary equipped zaku AND a fancy pose" kit + side kit. Scalable small kits not only simplfies logistics but are also compatible with any scale wargame from skirmish to battalion size and the modularity would encourage kit cross polination for modelers. And all of that posdible with just a bit of planning. Fuck sake just copy the top right of my pic and separate the leg pieces on the account of ball joints being already in the original design for a mobile suit, it is objectively a simpler entry grade because of no need for color separation.
I am done complaining on the malasian underwater basket weaving forum, thank you for coming to my ted talk.
    >>
    >>98891356
It is marginally more complex than a geedubs space marine, it's been done more than a decade ago (minus the ball joint). What are you on about. The sprue would literally be smaller and simpler frostgrave sprue. We just need it jo be done by a non bong company.

I participated in one of the tutorial sessions they were running for this this month. I enjoyed it a decent bit. I've been wanting a decently compact skirmish game that's mechanically light, so this seems like a steal for $35. Glad that it's generally miniature-agnostic too, so when they inevitably abandon the thing after a year, I can proxy shit in and use community custom cards.

Got quite a culture shock trying to follow it online though. I'm not a Gundam fan by any means, so I wasn't aware of just how kinda critical the community is to each other. Like the model kit groups seem to all be operating under the idea of
    >don't post anything you've got unless you're trying to impress me, which you damn well better
    >they bought a kit and wanna talk about it like an out-of-a-box toy, behead them
and it's interesting seeing this game causing that to clash up against some of the more typical miniatures people, where you see a lot more of
    >here is my dudes with 3 layers of $0.89 walmart paint globbed on with a shitty wash
    >well hey as long as it has SOME paint on it

    >>98849857
It’s a hex-based game, therefore basically a board game. It doesn’t really tickle my fancy beyond the cool mobile suit miniatures. I’d rather use them to play a real minis game, perhaps one I make up, than play what amounts to mecha hero quest.

It's not, it is its own Gundam entity. You do assemble a model, but it's not supposed to compete with normal gunpla. You have... normal gunpla for that. It's a smaller scale to be a game with a hobby aspect.

It's like complaining that that a different factory is producing vanilla instead of chocolate with nothing stopping you from just buying the original chocolate.

I don't think anon is wrong in saying this leans more board game than wargame, nor in saying it's more "game" than it is "Gundam game". The suits so far do a good job of feeling very much like they should but the game as a whole is pretty abstracted and gameified - it's fun to play but if it wasn't Gundam models and art you wouldn't know it was a Gundam game. Again, fortunately it's fun, which is enough to power through that drawback, at least for a lot of people.
    >>
    >>98899781
Sorry, hexed based games aren't miniature wargames. X-Wing had the same problem. I want to measure moves with my cool mechs, not jump around hexes.
    >>98901714

    >>
    >>98879460
    >it plays like a mix of battletech and kill team.
This is kind of so reductionist that it borders on meaningless, but sure, that's basically true. It's a kill team style skirmish game on a hex grid, with relatively long time to kill, relatively short ranged abilities, and a big emphasis on board traversal for objectives and acquiring upgrades.

My main takeaway from playing online is that, at least with the limited units so far (core set + 2 expos) and scenarios (the two in the core set), it feels pretty rich in terms of strategy and depth and all the suits feel really satisfying in their own way. They've managed to cram pretty strong identities into each unit (the tactics cards are a big part of this - every unit has a special "signature" tactic card) so even the ones with less combat focused stats still feel rewarding to use. Torohachi from the Unicorn box isn't really meant to fight anyone ever, but he's still fun to fly around, which is a major triumph for the dev team considering the utter lack of listbuilding constraints. I don't know that torohachi will be like, meta or competitive viable or whatever, but given that your listbuilding tradeoff is literally "take Torohachi or take Barbatos instead", the fact that the little mobile worker is fun and feels good to include in your list and play is a huge green flag for future expansions.

Of course maybe within six sets everything is buried by power creep, who knows.
    >>
    >>98901714
It's not that this specifically isn't like a board game, but moreso that using hex-based movement as a criteria is the words of the insane
