Early YGO games are the wild fucking west, i don't remember exactly which game it was, but one of them let you tribute a monster to summon a level 5/6 one, then use dark hole to wipe the field, and then summon your monster to swing directly.
Forbidden memories famously lets you summon any monster you want for free, but it comes at the heavy cost of only being able to play 1card per turn.

Thats the list I am currently playing IRL.
Basically, it is a pretty easily piloted Synchro deck that wants to make Bramble and Rage Rose Witch with Garden on field to soft-floodgate the opponent and basically make your other endboard pieces (usually Arms and Crystal Wing) plants and therefore undestroyable by card effects. Usually you will get reduce their LP by a few thousand as they try to build (presuming you play first) through Bramble's burn effect. Use the monster negates from Arms and Crystal Wing to protect your stuff, then tag Bramble into OG Black Rose end-phase and nuke their board (but not yours thanks to Rage Rose) which will usually deal around 3k to them. For follow-up, use Rose Dragon to make Dis Pater and the opponent generally concedes at that point. Going second, you can afford some decent handtraps for the format (Veiler, Ogre) and nobody really suspects you to make Rose Dragon in their turn using Synchro Emergency.
The extra-deck is pretty versatile and I have seen others play stuff like Zalen, Lilyreaper and Juraishin - I'd cut the Cirle of the Fairies (I just run it because it is helpful with the plants in my sidedeck), and maybe the Moonlight and/or Blood Rose Dragon (although Moonlight is helpful because if you tag out Bramble midchain, you at least get some benefit from it rather than OG BRD which will miss timing + playing all the Rose Dragons is on brand). I play Chaos Angel to out the Yubel at my local.
The shortcomings of the deck is it is pretty inconsistent/bricky from time to time, and has to play Dragonic Warrior as another 1 card starter, which really hurts if it gets negated because it discards a card as cost to activate its effect (although high impact stuff like Ash doesn't really see much play in the format).
Creature your own sidedeck based on your locals, obviously.

If I open a non-engine heavy hand going first game 2/3 with Cactus Bouncer or Lonefire in-hand, I often just make Circle of the Fairies and normal Bouncer, or use Lonefire to search Rosewhip but usually people do not like this.

Case in point is a card like Secret Village of Spellcasters. Spellcaster-adjacent decks fart out spellcasters like crazy and basically never backfires on the card's controller unless their opponent manages to get up to six (out of the six possible total) monsters off of their field. They get to build their boards with multiple points of interaction (including negation most of the time), then lock their opponent out of the most important card type in the game. Sometimes they don't even need to go that far and just need to have a single protected spellcaster on the field, because shutting off the most important card type in the game just kills the majority of decks in the game. This is one of the 34 banned cards on this list.

The very same thing applies to every other stun card on the list. Greedy comboshit builds their board, you start your turn and tutor a card by card effect, now the greedy comboshit player activates Droll and you can't draw or tutor for the rest of the turn. Your opponent is on a mono-type/attribute deck (typically Fiend decks these days), they can do their comboshit and then cap it off with Rivalry of Warlords, Gozen Match, or TCBOO. They can do their greedy comboshit and then activate Anti-Spell Fragrance to, once again, lock their opponent out of the most important card type in the game. If you actually look at the cards being banned, they're either like this or tutor/cheat out cards that are like this.

A lot of new blood just got permanently soured on the game, since they literally just released the last missing piece for mitsurugi (end ruler and arguably gallant thief) last month and then fucking shot it in the head. The people who panic bought the ars magna shit for their elfnote decks just got shat on and will now have to buy the artmage core at 5x the price. The schizos who have been playing branded for 5 years now are roping themselves en masse. The few negates we had are all gone, which was a massive blow to petdeckers, who don't have the luxury of in-engine disruption.

It's funny how they basically nuked the budget decks they've spent the past year releasing.
Branded is now completely unplayable without its hundred dollar cards.
Lunalight lost Cross Sheep, Bagooska and Dugares so now you basically end on one Liger Dancer and nothing else.
Pure Mitsurugi is now unplayable.
Sky Striker looks like it got away but it still lost F&V and running Desires is more dangerous with Engage at 2 so you're going to need to replace those cards and the replacements for them are more expensive. The high end builds will probably be fine, the poverty ones are the ones that got hit.

They really should have tried to hit around the budget decks. Hell I think most people would have been fine with a Habakiri errata to add a lock to it over an outright ban but the window to do that was the legendary modern decks and that ship has sailed.
There isn't even a new structure deck coming out to soften the blow. I legit don't know what you'd recommend a new player to get at this point.

That's not my point. My point is my copy of Engage came in the little three-pack of special cards included in a box of Magnificent Maestros, suggesting it has some significance separating it from what comes in the actual boosters. Never mind the new chibi art and possibility of Starlight Rare instead of just Secret Rare. Konami included Engage in this set with extra bells and whistles, and now it's telling me I'm a fool for being excited to pull the card. At this point, why even have new Starlight chibi versions when they can just do anime character tokens like they did for the Beyond the Brave booster four-pack I also bought?
Then again, this same set gave me a Delinquent Duo...

Mitsurugi was not only a very competent, easy to pilot AND cheap deck if played pure, it was also a powerful engine capable of patching up any and all decks that slotted in the aforementioned white snake and the pre-prepation package.

If he ever comes back, it'll be with an awful errata that completely kills the card, something like a reptile lock for the whole turn (on top of the once per duel restriction), which doesn't sound bad until you realize that it doesn't let you use ANYTHING but the fucking rituals themselves, as there are almost no reptile extra deck monsters (i can only think of that ragnaraika snek girl).

Now that TCG banlist is fully out, I've been experimenting with some other stupid side engines and I realized something, how come Shining Sarc package or Azamina Package has never been in Phantom Knights? I know PK is obscure but since they got new support, you'd think someone would run both of these packages. Dark monsters + way to insulate combo for lock.
I'd have to check for synergy but am I missing something on why people never played them together? They also don't really "need" their SS (although I think PK wants it) and DMG can bridge through Rusty Bardiche.

I was just thinking of typical DMG -> Sifr/Despian Luluwilith or worse case scenario DMG + Rod + Gandora is a free Bardiche (although I don't know if that's enough to start the full wombo combo...) If you can get really sloppy you could summon the level 12 Auxila instead to go centurion combo but then it might flood the deck with a bunch of garnets. Hmm, any good discords or places to theory craft with this? Planning on striking while the iron is hot and DMOD/DMG crashing in prices.

I figure having monster effects being the inciting trigger to add counters makes sense. OG Venom Swamp didn't give venom counters to venom monsters but I prefer the venom not affecting them instead, and maybe they can use those counters as a resource? Then again maybe that is stepping too hard on Alien's toes.

Dark, Level 4, Reptile, 1400ATK, 1000DEF
When your opponent activates a monster effect (quick effect) you can special summon this card from your hand, and when you do, add one "Venom" counter to that monster for each "Venom" Monster you control. Once per turn (quick effect) You can move any "Venom" counters on this card to another face-up monster on the field.

Needs work, but ambushing the opponent does fit the snake motif.

If you have no cards on the field, or you only control "Venom" cards (Quick Effect) you can Special Summon this card from your hand. When this card is Normal or Special Summoned, you can place one "Swamp of the Venom Deity" face-up in your field zone from your Hand, Deck, or Graveyard. You can tribute this card with four "Venom" counters on it (Quick Effect), destroy this card and up to two cards your opponent controls and Special Summon one "Vennominaga the Deity of Poisonous Snakes" from your hand or deck, this is treated as being summoned by the effect of "Rise of the Snake Deity".

Helps set up the field and works as another way to summon the boss, I thought using Offering as a template for it was cute.

Playing decks like Striker (and adjacent) come down more to understanding what your opponent's gameplan is and how best to interfere with it in a way that they bottleneck on HOPTs losing momentum for the turn which lets you generate a nearly impossible to match lead in interaction economy on the following turn. Go in with the mentality of when you're going second and looking for the ideal spot to use handtraps but keep that mindset the entire game and you'll be okay.

But he's right, TCG pushed legendary modern and arc-v decks as budget friendly, easy to learn decks for everyone who wanted to just jump into the game. And it worked, both products sold a shit ton because they actually gave you a few absurdly strong decks in them (namely mitsurugi, sky striker and lunalight) AND because they had a ton of staples (duel devastator from 2019 offered only staples, but was $60). Post banlist mitsurugi is completely dead, sky striker lost a powerful quickplay, and lunalight lost one endboard piece and 2 powerful extenders (s:p + liger pass isn't doing shit).

The only thing KONMAI achieved with this banlist was completely lose the goodwill they earned with this product line, and not just that, a lot of people are swearing off of ever buying expensive singles again, as KONMAI could ban them only a few months later.

The Speed Duel sets reprinted a shit tom of GOAT staples. It's the reason why I was able to get in to GOAT format in the first place. Konami needs to do that again, but with Synchros. That way, more people can get in to Edison.
