How do you create that JRPG feeling for your games?

>>988398381) Play with people who watch anime and are more-or-less up to date with it, too2) Tell them it's anime-themed campaign3) Run a game that operates on anime logic (any genre), while informing players this is going to run on [insert genre here] principles4) PROFIT!You don't even need anime-friendly ruleset, you just need the right crowd with the right set of expectations, the rest handles itself.
>>98839838Have the childhood friend play with you of course. Im sure she will love to spend more time with you
>>98839838>Demon Lord>Chosen Hero>Adventurer Guild>Elves are reclusive immortals who are somehow less capable than humans>Dwarfs are always blacksmiths or engineers>NotJapan exists and explains the existence of Japanese elements in the world>PCs start by fighting low tier enemies like goblins or slimes, and eventually ramp up to fighting demigods and gods
>>98840451>Their own character sheet awareness>Round city>kobolds that look like dogs
>>98839838There's more than one feeling that pertains to JRPGs, and not all JRPGs share all their feelings universally.
>>98839838the nip mind, and by extension the weeb, cannot imagine a world that isn't strictly regimented. Adventurer is a profession managed by the guilds, and all adventurers have a rank going from F to SSS, which determines what quests they're allowed to attempt. The world is very static and monsters and such exist but don't really venture away from their zone. In fact, the whole world doesn't change very much. Early Renaissance stasis is in full effect, despite obvious anachronisms. It's very important that the face of the adventurer's guild is a cute girl, preferably a blonde. When your players have done enough F-rank quests they're allowed to take a class exam and become E-rank adventurers. The process repeats until someone asks what the actual point is.THAT is when you reveal that the whole thing is an illusion made by an evil god to keep people complacent, none of the people you've met are strictly speaking real, they're all extensions of the illusion. You have chosen the "Fight God" path.also there needs to be animal people but all it means is that there's people with like cat ears who says nyaaa.
>>98840711>adventures are just salarymen with just a bit of fun allowedGrim.
>>98839838>Call classes Jobs>Only allow one player to do a male character >Only the female character allowed to have some personality>Every female character must choose a -dere subtype

>>98839838Crystals and fighting god
>>98839838Play Anime 5e, which has no actual relationship to 5e D&D.
>>98840711>THAT is when you reveal that the whole thing is an illusion made by an evil god to keep people complacent, none of the people you've met are strictly speaking real, they're all extensions of the illusionSounds like /tg/.
>>98839838Well, you have to pick a flavor of JRPG. A Final Fantasy is not the same as a Dragon Quest, and so on. They might seem similar on the surface, but they have different tropes and tones and formulas, and if you mix and match them you'll just end up with a mess that doesn't feel like anything at all. Pick a recipe you are trying to follow, and then put your own spin on it.
I dont because people that like "japanese thing" as a genre are braindead.
>>98839838I don't. I never liked the feeling JRPGs have. >awful UI design always decades behind every other game genre>overly focused on overly tacky costume for gear with the illusion of variety because every design is equally busy looking and costumey.>extremely mid classes, spells, abilities, etc. Everything cliche or common to RPGs is poorly implemented, and everything novel is only superficially differentJRPGs seemed to have souls up to the 90s, but everything from 2000 onward is soulless. >>98840711this here. The regimented and orderly nature of it all, acknowledging how superficial everything is. It's all theme parkey, and you can't make a believable story in it.
>>98840711I love that this is hardly something most JRPGs do.
>>98846838Anon, this is /tg/. Nobody here plays games, so they wouldn't know that.
>>98843526>Fire Emblem ?? and Final Fantasy ?? is Sovl>Baten Kaitos and Radiant Historia are SovllessTalk about having shit taste
>>98841063>>Draw a boy>>Call it a girlwhen and where has this ever happened
>>98843466I already said this, but he didn't care. The one feeling that OP gets from every TTRPG is the only one that matters.
>>98848915
>>98848959Dunno about that one, the artist gave her pretty big tatas
>>98846851I mean, it's not like the japs don't do it, but it's clearly an isekai thing. Many JRPGs don't bother, even now.Full disclaimer: I don't even think the guild system per se is bad. It's just a middleman thing for adventureres and quests. A club for freelancers, hardly something related to sarariman or whatever. It IS arguably something that makes adventureres really common and normal, which can be "bad". But DND already commonified them since forever, long gone are the days in which the fantasy hero was mostly an outsider or loner to his own world.
>>98839838Normal fantasy stuff but add a ton more structure and formality to society, manners are enforced by law, everyone is a member of some kind of organization that has control of their choices, individualism is almost nonexistant, and the adventuring guild is a major political and financial power.
>>98839838Ryuutama
>>98840451>>98840482That's isekai, not JRPGs.
>>98840451That sounds like DND. Expect maybe for the demon lord.
>>98854774Counterpoint, JRPGs are just a poor man's isekai. No truck for you, fool, you gotta use your imagination and do your own math!
>>98839838Seriously nowGroup is a mostly teenagers and friends. Heavily prepared story based, more than dungeon/hexcrawling shit. Related to the above: characters are definitely NOT left just to player's creations, from a background stance. Hell, they're probably not left to interpretation, as in you'd want fixed-ish keys to riff on.Aesthetically, it tends to be generally cozy, and of course it doesn't give a fuck about faux-medieval aeshtetics
>>98855008Counter-counterpoint, Sword World existed well before isekai slop flooded the market. It'd be like saying all western rpgs are a poor man's superhero comic.
>>98855206>It'd be like saying all western rpgs are a poor man's superhero comic.Superheroes? No, not ALL of them. However if you widened your net into pulp magazines you'd be closer to the mark. That nets you detective, western, scifi, fantasy, war, horror, prozzies seducing Nazis, fightin' man hungry mongooses, and all manner of magical realms!
>>98855370Don't forget going on a Bender!
>>98839838Have a look at Returner Games' FFRPG 2EOne of the most faithful adaptations to facilitate playing a roleplay videogame by hand.https://web.archive.org/web/20030603182719/http://www.returnergames.com/complete.html

>>98839838I was reading through Cloudbreaker Alliance, and I came up with this little list.Choose two or more >Tons of different races, but very little if no prejudice against these races (you can have ONE race that is prejudiced against if you need it.) >Clear separation from combat and overland travel (for example, you cannot use fireball to burn down trees, it is only meant for attacking monsters).>Gritty themes that clashes with the character design.>Japanese party and character dynamics. (For example: lots of silly or not so silly arguments but ultimately the party still works together. Characters that are way more childlike and one-dimensional. Lots of layers.)>Video game like abilities and weaknesses (For example: Limit breaks, and "50% of the time this high damage ability will backfire on you", Pokemon and/or SMT resistances and weaknesses, and high HP. These are just examples.) >Tons of named characters. (This almost needs to be a requirement for JRPGs. But there are some classic JRPGs where this is not the case.) >Beat the boss: fix problems.>Friendship ranks and/or teamwork attacks.
>>98840451That's just Lodoss Wars nigga... Which is basically DnD.
>>98839838Use jelly filled donuts instead of jelly filled donuts.
>>98855370What even is going on here
>>98848915Persona 4, Kino no Tabi..how are you not aware of Reverse Traps?
>>98854774Damn near every isekai based on Dragon Quest. It's the ur-text of the genre. Not all Japanese fantasy is downstream Dragon Quest, but EVERY Isekai is Dragon Quest.
>>98873559Not basically.Lodoss is (or rather was) a dungeons and dragons game, repackaged as a story by Group SNE. They sometimes used some other systems, but it was D&D until Group SNE made Sword World at which point Sword World because the system they used.
Instead of focusing on combat or exploration have the characters focus a lot on shopping & homesteading. When they do want to fight monsters, make sure there is minimal exploration, just big open rooms with a few enemies at any time that are considerably below the party's difficulty level but reward them above their level. Every third session should be a character flashback.
>>98839838weeb music weeb artinvite weebs to playroll to see who has to/gets to be the girl
>>98840482>kobolds that look like dogsAre they FAT? Asking for a friend.
>>98840711>The world is very static and monsters and such exist but don't really venture away from their zone. There are more than enough of these where story includes turning points about cities getting attacked by monsters or dark forces, where monsters become dangerous because they are displaced, or other changes lead to them becoming more dangerous, etc. In fact, the entire explanation behind persisting adventurer guilds and the monster exterminations quests they issue is usually to keep monster populations in check, which is also why they are systematically structured, because for the guilds it is routine.>In fact, the whole world doesn't change very much. Early Renaissance stasis is in full effect, despite obvious anachronisms. You mean like in every other setting? How much do you expect the world to change over the duration of one group's adventure? Plus, you very obviously tried to describe what is more general fantasy or isekai, because the whole adventurers guild trope and its rank structure doesn't exist in a lot of JRPGs. Like one of the most well known JRPGs is Chrono Trigger, which doesn't feature an adventurers guild and is all about the world changing through ages.>the nip mind, and by extension the weeb, cannot imagine...I don't know why you confidently started like this, as if it were beneath you, if your understanding is this limited and the best you can manage is to apply vague meme knowledge incorrectly.
>>98840711Nigger that's just isekai slop anime, not JRPGs
>all this talk about animes>nothing about actual JRPG mechanics like thief class stealing grenades from wolves or characters having at least 2000 HP by level 5 out of 100
>>98839838>evil faction is some variant of "empire" and they're all modern or even magitek compared to the rustic and rural good factions>big evil guy is using some kind of mcguffin for world domination and a side effect of it is more monsters/elements are out of balance/poor people die>the confrontation with the big evil guy is actually the midpoint of the story after which it's revealed he's being controlled (knowingly or inadvertently) by an even EVILER guy>the bigger eviler guy is a demon king/force of nature/embodiment of chaos which breaks the world even more>the party spends the last half of the campaign in this broken and ravaged world trying to fight to the bigger evil preferably somewhere high up like a tower or just straight up heaven>biggest baddest evil has at least 3 phases and must have a lot of references to judeo-christian/abrahamic occultismI only played Final Fantasy so it's the only JRPG I'm familiar with
>>98839838I have never seen any JRPGs really capture the feel of this picture. If it wasn't for the extremely different pacing and approach I'd dare say CRPGs capture this feeling more but again, Western games just have too much of a difference in how they present things.
I run very, very weeby fantasy games, but I would call them less inspired by JRPGs and more inspired by Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, Neverness to Everness, etc.
>>98843526Don't forget>The type of weapon you're using is your entire class. You start with a sword? It's impossible to grab a mace or an axe. Ranged weapon? Just throw the sword or shoot shit out of it.
>>98881904They're all chink-made, Edna
>>98881472TBF you're ignoring the fact crits are a thing in almost all JRPGs and that JRPG characters do plenty of damage to make up for having shitloads of HP.
>>98839838I play digitally and make everyone use 8bit sprites on the battle map.
>Like a JRPG?Have the final boss be a god.
>>98887920Better yet, have it be the Christian """god""" (lower-case intentional).
>>98889876Nobody liked Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse except for you.
>>98890759I liked it! I'm Christian, but I would not consider the SMT series to be something worth learning religion from. Gnosticism is bad.
>>98839838You REALLY gotta put emphasis on the power of friendship and determination for it to be a true JRPG.Also, more or less this >>98840451.
>>98869422It was though. The idea is someone with the outward appearance of a guy with big tits can be called a girl, therefore someone with the outward appearance of a girl with a big dick can be called a boy.
>>98839838Start small, have the player characters truly be exceptional for their tier, but there's always a bigger tier waiting behind the next plot twist.Eventually deal with god or godlike threat.Everyone in the group of friends gets some kind of special/unique power.
>>98892582Exactly. Which is what was bejng said by the other anon, that the posted character in an example of "Draw a boy, call it a girl", which you, or atleast the anon you picked this conversation up from, was trying to discredit by saying she had a big bosom.
