Welcome to Open OSR. This is a seperate thread is for open discussions of OSR, OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (Pre Wotc D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, Shadowcity etc) games without distinction here.

There is a general for those who only want to talk about "first decade" D&D. If that is your preference, you can find that elsewhere.
As always, report and ignore any trolling

Thread Question: What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?
What are your favorite Traps to use in a dungeon?

In Germany we have a decent OSR scene, but it is not all Dungeons and Dragons.

A large amount of RPGs are translated into German, but English is still very useful because translations for new systems would be terrible to rely upon since they will usually come either later or never, and I hate both.
>>
>>98834858
>What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?
I am very open to people playing any class they qualify for. I have always allowed Paladins specifically for that reason, even though they can be a headache, especially with new players used to 5e who make problems around alignment.

Most of those from ACKS II RR, the Heroic Handbook, and Player's Companion. I don't use those from By This Axe, not for PCs at least.

How does one realistically play pally in 1E, it's more of a rare miracle unless the DM let's you get one with ability scores.
>>
>>98835087
Wow, very insightful comment. Only someone who has totally played in his life and can totally create a B/X character sheet without any errors could come up with a comment this deep.
>>
>>98835087
It happens.
37.50% chance to get Str 12+.
74.07% chance to get Int and Con 9+.
25.93% chance to get Wis 13+.

Combined together, that's a 5.33% chance, or about 1 in 20.

It's the 17+ Charisma that's a doozy. Only 1.85% chance to qualify for that, which drops the whole thing to a .98%, or roughly one in a thousand.

So, as long as you roll well for all the other stats and then cheat on Charisma, it's not too bad.
>>
>>98835087
Not doing 3d6 down the line. Use one of the other methods Gygax suggested for getting broken ass stats and arrange them however you want, as he also suggested.

You mean standard 3?

>What Classes do you like to allow outside of the standard 4?
I've actually been working on a FF1 B/X game, and the current test party my group is trying out is a Warrior, a Black Mage, a White Mage, and a Red Mage.
The introduction of the Red Mage is the biggest change (though the White Mage is also very different from a cleric), and I haven't had anyone test out the Thief or Monk at all, but so far it's been going pretty smoothly. The obvious synergies between FF1 and B/X are doing most of the heavy lifting.

I think you meant .098%

>>98835087
bear in mind that adnd 1e is 4d6 drop lowest so the chances change from getting said stats in b/x
>>
>>98837133
4d6 drop lowest would be:
61.65% chance to get Str 12+.
89.51% chance to get either Int and Con 9+.
48.77% chance to get Wis 13+.
Or a 24.08% chance for all 4, slightly less than 1 in 4.
With a 5.79% of 17+ charisma, that turns into a 1.39% chance (about 1 in 72) of rolling a character that can qualify as a paladin, if you’re rolling all these stats in order.

Out of order, it’s considerably higher odds.
You have 6 rolls, and need to roll at least a 17, 13, 12, 9, and 9.
Getting the 17+ with a 5.79% chance in six rolls is 30.07%. Getting at least the other target numbers is considerably easier, and totaled together comes down to 25.17% to qualify as a Paladin with 4d6 drop lowest, any order.

I don't think I ever appreciated just how absolutely shit 3d6 down the line was until now.
I've never liked it, particularly when someone rolled a 3 in some score like Con and would spend that entire character's short life sulking.

I'm also not a fan of the kind of guys who act like they're hardcore when they do 3d6 down the line. Sure, it's a way to play, but you're still just sitting around a table pretending to be an elf, and not punching bears while riding motorcycles through burning hoops.

my personal peeve with 3d6 is that for it to work stats need to be almost completely irrelevant otherwise a bad array ruins your character. But if they are completely irrelevant why have them?

But i actually like them because they help painting a picture of the character.
I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.

I think it's what Adnd did best compared to b/x
>>

>I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.
I hate how making a character in 3.X is like building a deck of Magic the gathering cards where there's right and wrong choices (kind of expected from WotC of all companies)
Also that you can't just "be" the character you want, you have to go through the building process first.

>I also hate the way 3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x on certain stats for a character to even have a chance of working and not a part of who the character is.

I kind of like how important 3rd edition's stats were. There's this very small sweet spot between levels 4 and 9 where the stats are important, but not too important like they are at lower levels and also not rendered completely pointless by all the skill points and feats and class abilities at higher levels.

I think most D&D editions have their sweet spots where all the mechanics work best and the level of complexity hits just the right amount. Where that sweet spot is varies a bit according to personal preference, but I think that most people agree that playing character levels 1-2 typically intentionally suck to some degree and that at some point higher level D&D also fucking blows ass.

I don't know exactly where I'd put the cutoff for when B/X starts to suck, especially because it's not uniform. I do know there's a certain point where Magic-Users can go from making the game more interesting to making the game less fun for everyone except them.
>>
>>98840576
one quarter of the game isnt a small sweet spot

i think it is just hp. There is a point where the hp is just right. In b/x-Adnd i would put it at levels 3-7

I kinda wish they got over their wargaming autism and gave a larger hp pool at the start and then a much smaller growth rate like 3dice at level 1 and then 1 or 2 per level depending on your class
>>
>>98838942
>they don't meet the minimum for any class.

So, it's possible to roll less than a 9 in all four Str, Dex, Wis, and Int scores, and fail to qualify for any class.
There's a 25% chance to roll an 8 or less with 3d6, or 1/4. Two times would be 1/16, three times would be 1/64, and four times would 1/256, which isn't actually that rare.
What happens then? The character just fucks off?

It's pretty understandable. Fighter feels like the "default" that anyone should be able to qualify for.
Though, at the same time, it would be pretty rough to play a fighter with sub-9 strength.
>>
>>98842968
I swear this was a thing in one of the editions.
you'd end up with a shitton of really crappy fighters cause you couldn't qualify for anything else.
I'm not crazy i swear.
>>
>>98842990
I know in 3rd edition, you needed a minimum 10+spell level to cast a spell, so if you had 10 or less in your mental stats, you were locked out of being a caster, so you might as well play a Fighter.

Also, the class requirements in AD&D for Ranger, Paladin, and Barbarian were pretty steep, so failing to hit those and having to settle for a Fighter is pretty common.
>>
>>98842990
I had to double-check the books because fighters not having requirements sounds right. But nope, Gary wanted to gatekeep them behind a 9 and a 7. So it's possible to fail to qualify for any class, which feels like an oversight.

Chainmail also didn't have any class requirements, and really didn't even have classes, just unit types.

>one quarter of the game isn't a small sweet spot
Considering there's rules for going well beyond 20th level and the game turns into a hot mess past 15, it's pretty small.

Though, for some reason AD&D has rules up to level 32 and then later expanded up to 100 while BECMI had rules for what happens beyond 36, when 99% of characters never got past 10.
>>
>>98844887
people didnt go past 15 in 3rd edition either and they certainly didnt go past 20
as always the high levels are both half baked and so far off that people dont ever get there
and that is true for both adnd and modern editions

>>
>>98834858
>What are your favorite Traps to use in a dungeon?
I like old traps very close to the entrance that are broken and busted and completely fail, but suggest that there might be really vicious traps further in.
A pit trap where the trap door is all rusted and needs to be kicked open, and at the bottom is a skeleton pierced through with needle-thin spikes emerging from the walls but most have failed to reset and return to their starting positions. A guillotine blade that drops down from the ceiling but it's so rusted and warped it gets stuck just high enough to put a nick into the top of the wizard's hat. A tripwire coated in cobwebs that fails to trigger any mechanism.

>Illithid
etymological breakdown connecting Illithid to ἠλίθιος (ēlíthios) and ἠλιθιώδης (ēlithiōdēs):

• ἠλίθιος (ēlíthios): In Ancient Greek, this adjective originally meant "idling," "fruitless," or "in vain" (derived from ήλη, meaning wandering or distraction). Over time, and into Later/Modern Greek, its meaning shifted to mean "foolish," "silly," "idiotic," or "moronic."
• ἠλιθιώδης (ēlithiōdēs): This is a later compound form. The suffix -ώδης (-ōdēs) means "full of," "having the quality of," or "resembling." Therefore, ἠλιθιώδης translates directly to "foolish-looking," "resembling an idiot," or "of an idiotic nature."

• -id / -idæ: In classical taxonomy and English linguistic tradition derived from Greek, the suffix -id (from the Greek patronymic -ides) denotes "offspring of," "belonging to the family of," or "descendant of."

The Semantic Irony (The Etymological Connection)

If we treat "Illithid" as a literal Greek derivative combining ἠλίθιος (ēlíthios) and the suffix -id, the structural translation yields:
• "Descendant of the foolish" or "One belonging to the family of idiots."
The Linguistic Irony:
This creates a brilliant piece of semantic irony. In Dungeons & Dragons lore, Illithids are hyper-intelligent, psionic masterminds who view all other humanoid races as inferior, mindless cattle.
However, from an etymological perspective, their name suggests the exact opposite. There are two ways to interpret this linguistic choice:
1. The Effect on Others: Illithids do not possess foolish minds themselves; rather, they cause idiocy in others. When an Illithid uses its "Mind Blast" or devours a victim's brain, it reduces a highly intelligent creature into a mindless, vegetative, or "idiotic" state.
>>
>>98838318
>They also only own the name Illithid, not Mind Flayer.
>>98838121
>Remember that D&D copyrighted octopus headed monsters but didn't copyright squid headed monsters.

The ilithid is just a trick to have some Cthulhu in their game by another name. Everything else like "oh no its not that" is an excuse.

They are stupifiers just like Cthulhu drives men mad and the rest.

Goggles & Dampsuits

In the Monstrous Arcana book era of AD&D 2e, illithids were not just brain-eating squidwards. They were brain-eating squidwards with a serious dermatological problem. Sunlight clouded their vision and dried out their moist, amphibious skin (wimps), which is a polite way of saying the surface world was one giant frying pan to them. So they did what any self-respecting psychic freak would do: they invented survival gear. Thus the glaregoggles and dampsuit.

Well in that case you'd normally roll a new character. The DM may instead prefer to grudgingly allow a single stat boosted to make one class allowable, possibly taking points from other stats to balance things out. Or. You could play as 0th level human fighter. I've never heard of anyone being forced to do that in response to poor stat rolls, but there's a first time for everything.
>>
>>98838121
>octopus headed monsters but didn't copyright squid headed monsters.
another annoying thing was the they used magic instead of psionics for convenience (with the psionics being optional), but the psionics system was so bad and this pointed this out even more even if they did not mean to.

They should have no magic, divine or arcane, they should have only psionics; and it should count just as a different kind of metaphysical power.

And psionics, they should have a proper system - like the mage slots etc with some variability to emulate the difference a bit and not the fuck counting power points.

-did not calculate acid resistance or immunity if we assume they secret the acid to get into the brain
-and many other factors (effects any creature?)

-mind blast effects all other illithids and also effects thralls and slaves of the illthids, which creates hilarious situations which is pretty good

-plane shift is suicide if the illithid uses it to "save himself", it should have been dimension door (self only)

Plane Shift 2e
"Note that pinpoint accuracy is rarely achieved; arriving at a random distance from an intended destination is common." and in 3.5 we larned just how random "From the Material Plane, you can reach any other plane, though you appear 5 to 500 miles (5d%) from your intended destination."

i remember playing Zanzer's dungeon (black box red dragon some basic dnd in tutelary state, the books had low level spells etc it was great), we where a mage a cleric, a thief, fighter and an elf (this was the racial fighter/mage class).

The thief pilfered the keys from a tall greenish orc jailer and we got out. I remember some fights even with some wolf, and then we did the Queen's harvest trilogy.

We got to level 9 then we did another campaign.

>3rd edition went where they are too important and you want at least x
increaasing them as you leveled up was a huge error, as well as giving bonuses from early on like getting

3.5;
12 gives you +1/+1

2e
16 gives you +0/+1
17 gives you +1/+1

so every character with a bit of basic die roll had +something to this attack roll while in 2e you had only the warriors having that. This diminished the warrior classes further and the stats themselves since you got bonuses even with a low to mid number like 12.

worst DM; 1 guy rolls for character get 17 int and 18 str and 15 con, the rest from 10 to 13. Plans to make a mage then turn fighter dual class human. DM gets some creature to reduce his str score permanently to 12 in the first adventure. Should have said nothing and roll %% and made a fighter and turned mage later as a surprise. But the dm sucked. He would give nothing, as in we were level 7 and at that point the only magical weapon we have was a cursed sword -2 that was stuck to the fighter's hand.

other dm asshole, 1 guy made a fighter with the backround being he was a city watch guard that had enough and joined a party on some expedition but the guy had a polearm and the moron dm did not like what the polearm (oh you are killing all my monsters with that!!! yeah that is the whole point of it) could do so he broke it on purpose and then when he bought another he repeated it as to force him to use a sword or axe - which he had on him. Trash dms.

I've run a few Ravenloft adventures, but only an odd mix of them.

I know one guy who wanted to run through all of the Dragonlance adventures with one group and got pretty far into it, but then there's an adventure that used the Battlesystem and that ended up killing that campaign.

i never used that, i played the classic adventures with an early party. It was fun but some jerk playing the mage argued with everyone and with me as the dm.

he went invisible and entered the draconian camp and eventually got caught and could not escape, did not dare, or get rescued as the party judged they woudl get killed and that he was a moron, so he started shouting and blaming everyone but himself.

low level mage goes snooping around in a draconian camp that even had auraks, the golden ones that have several spells, and thinks all will go well.

in another instance, i think it was the boxed set City by the Silt sea (from dark sun), it was in the very start of the adventure they came upon some elf tribe that was selling things and his cleric of/mage character murdered the old man selling his goods (it was for a ring of wizardry or some ring) with a hand axe and of course the elves chased them and they ended up in the silt sea with dead party members and the jerk attacked the captain and it just all became chaos, total chaos. The others we either silent or told him to guy fuck himself for getting all killed for some ring.

the spell Phantasmal killer killed him, all the rest died from the elves or from other idiocies and never go to the city. The only survivor was a halfling druid/illusionist.

Same jerk ruined the adventures, or made them memorable in a unique crappy way.

https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/dracaura/ aurak draconian
Once per day, Auraks can cast two wizard spells of 1st to 4th level. Preferred spells include enlarge, shocking grasp, ESP, stinking cloud, blink, lightning bolt, fire shield, and wall of fire.
>>
>>98849427
>Dragonlance
those death throes really spiced things up when they fought draconians

When an Aurak reaches 0 hit points, it does not die, but instead surrounds itself with green flames and enters a fighting frenzy (+2 bonus to attack and damage rolls). Anyone coming within three feet of the flames suffers 1d6 points of damage, unless a saving throw vs. petrification is successful. Six rounds later, or when the Aurak reaches -20 hit points, it transforms into a spinning ball of lightning, striking once per round as a 13-HD monster to cause 2d6 points of damage. Three rounds later, it explodes, stunning all within ten feet for 1d4 rounds (2d4 rounds if underwater), Those within ten feet also suffer 3d6 points of damage (no saving throw). Items within the range of the explosion must roll successful saving throws vs. crushing blow or be destroyed.

What happens to a Sivak when it reaches 0 hit points depends on the size of its slayer. If the slayer was a humanoid the same size as or smaller than the Sivak, the slain Sivak shapechanges into the form of its slayer. It remains in its death shape for three days, after which time it decomposes into black soot. It the slayer was not a humanoid or if it was a humanoid larger than the Sivak, the Sivak immediately bursts into flame upon reaching 0 hp, causing 2d4 points of damage to all within ten feet (no saving throw).

When a Bozak reaches 0 hit points, its scaly flesh shrivels and crumbles from its bones in a cloud of dust; this process takes one round. In the next round, the bones explode, causing 1d6 points of damage to all within ten feet (no saving throw).
>>
>>98849427
>Dragonlance
When a Baaz reaches 0 hit points, it turns into a stone statue. The person who struck the death blow must roll a successtul Dexterity Check with a -3 penalty or his weapon is stuck in the statue. The statue crumbles to dust within 1d4 rounds, freeing the weapon. The weapons and armor of the Baaz remain behind after it turns to dust.

When a Kapak reaches 0 hit points, its body instantly dissolves into a ten-foot-wide pool of acid. All within the pool suffer 1d8 points of damage per round from the acid (no saving throw). The acid evaporates in 1d6 rounds. All items possessed by the dissolved Kapak, including treasure and magical items, are rendered useless by the acid.

When slain, the sesk appear to shrink in upon themselves, dehydrating and turning to fine silvery dust in a single round.

Upon death, the traag bubble and rot away in a single round, leaving only a slimy puddle behind.
>>
>>98834858
what i also never got was why the fuck did the vampire drain levels when it struck you.

The whole point is that its a strong undead that can deceive and have magical powers etc.

You get punched you lose a level, this was utterly incomprehensible. It was not even when getting bitten and blood was drained.

https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/vampire/
https://www.completecompendium.com/appendix/vampire0

"Like all undead creatures, vampires exist in both the Positive Material and Negative Material planes at the same time. Their powerful negative essence allows them to drain two life energy levels from anyone they strike. If the vampire is making use of some form of weapon in the attack, it cannot employ this power."

completely senseless, if this would exist it would be when blood was drunk.

>Ravenloft adventure
played ship of horror, it was pretty bad but the dm made a great atmosphere. In the end you fight a 20th level necromancer that can kill you all with single spell if your party is level 8.

night of the walking dead was great

ravenloft the original adventures we found to be just ok

touch of death sort of confusing, the computer game was great though "stone prophet"

feast of the goblyns we all liked alot

the created freaked us out as we became puppets

we played almost all ravenloft adventures

Thoughts of Darkness writes that its 12th-15th level but its bullshit you need 30 level characters and you can still die. Adventure is pretty lame but the art and setting is great for inspiration.

the ship of horror adventure has a snow golem monster but it differs from the one found in the mc. The mc one is far far stronger.

They specifically say you can't chop off an arm or blind someone with a called shot, which straight up sucks.
I can understand why, because blinding people would almost always be the first thing someone would try to do against any opponent that they thought was going to survive longer than two rounds, but limiting called shots to knocking things out of peoples hands or triggering a switch feels like a missed opportunity to really add a lot more depth to the combat.

I'm working on a nice big series of tables to generate everything randomly for the PCs, with all sorts of details shaped by the setting. I really want to pull some of the players out of a "my character has to be a very specific type or I won't enjoy myself" mentality that they developed playing non-OSR games, and I feel like making much more than just ability scores up to chance might help with that. >>
>>98865948
You've invented a mythology with no basis in reality. It will die with you. Even saying anyone believes it now is laughable, because every single detail of your story is impossible and illogical. You don't even believe your own stories.

You tell your stories because you don't care how obvious they are as lies to everyone, you just need "a story", something to waste people's time because the only tools you have are obsession and the belief that you care less about wasting your life than other people do about you wasting theirs.

You genuinely think you can drive away everyone who disagrees with you away by being a cantakerous old man, the kind who ends up all alone in a nursing home with even the orderlies quietly praying for your death.

The few old men who encourage you and each other? It's the purest form of sado-masochism. We've already seen the two outcomes of your antics all across the internet before: either you're driven out, or the forum dwindles and dies. There is no third path where people start believing your nonsense when all your arguments just end up turning into empty trolling, not when anyone with any natural curiosity can find the truth that exists beyond your lies for themselves with incredible ease.

Your lies die with you. The undercurrent of your hatred will persist, but it will mutate into whatever form the culture war happens to take. All your weird game lies will die, and the world will move on.

Don't worry. None of the "audience" you're obsessed about will read a tl;dr post like this. This is just a post for you, so you don't need to go into theatrics over it like you're prone to do.

Just remember in five years time, that you were told you would regret your efforts, and you chose to keep going. Choose whatever story you want to justify it. Spiting your nonexistant boogeyman, a genuine belief you do own this board and everyone must be made to agree with you, whatever story you like.

I hope it comforts you.

>2e is a shit game, and rightfully looked down upon.
It's 1e but more open to modification and reflecting how the majority of people actually played the game, instead of acting like robots with sticks up their asses. It also comes with the benefit of terrible managerial oversight that was mostly hands-off and willing to throw resources at niche projects that had no chance of recouping their costs.

Not wanting to play 2e is fine. Hating it so much you want to discourage other people from playing/discussing/mining it is where it's clear you don't really care about the actual game and just want to LARP as an edition warring loser.

You do understand no one wants to hear your opinions on games, right? They even made a whole seperate thread just to get away from your braindead jackassery?

The last /osrg/ took two weeks to hit the bump limit, and that's with you doing your best to put on a show that it is actually "vibrant" and not just a few sad losers who've succeeded in driving off more than half of the threads original population. Imagine how much slower it would be if you weren't desperate to create a myth that you're so happy with how things have turned out for you, even as you keep crawling into these threads just for the opportunity to talk with real people.

You're not happy, and you've admitted as much since you say these threads trigger you and you won't stop flooding/shitposting in them because of how upset you are. These threads upset you because you want people to believe all of /tg/ accepts your incredibly stupid ideas about the OSR, when the only place that does is the dying husk-turned-containment-thread that's the sad remainder of the /osrg/.

People can look into the archive just a few years ago and see what a real "vibrant" /osrg/ was like. Actually, the whole board was in a much better state, so it makes it a bit of black humor that this is the place that's ended up as your last resort since you've been laughed out of every other place that discusses OSR games. You really lose either way, either being driven out or killing wherever you stay too long.

The sad thing is that you'll happily contribute to a board bleeding away its users if it means you can hold onto your delusions.

>>
>>98866369
A threads quality is determined by its quality.

The /osrg/ is a mess, and the thing is, you know it. Everyone knows it. But you can't admit it, because you worked to make it your hugbox and admitting it sucks now would shatter your ego and kill what little remains of your plan. You'd rather watch it die than admit you fucked up.

You being unable to admit it sucks much more now is part of what has lead it to its current state, with you having to pretend you like and even prefer how it is now, making each iteration more dead-eyed and forced and filled with even more is the same faggotry than before.

No one even had to troll it for it to die. You just had to show off that charming personality of yours, the one where you bore everyone who agrees with you and try to bite off the head of anyone who disagrees. That's the recipe for a hugbox, and I guess no one told you what happens to hugboxes before you set out to make one.

I'm telling you about measurable indicators that signal a decline in population, something you're aware of and are desperate to disguise as best you can and still happen to be failing to do so.

The /osrg/ discussion having turned to shit is a subjective topic you could argue about endlessly, and you would, because you even argue about objective facts because you're always talking to some imaginary audience or boogeyman instead of the person who's talking to you.

I'm explaining that people are not stupid. We can recognize big, obvious signs that the /osrg/ is nothing like what it used to be, and its quality has significantly diminished thanks to your efforts to make it an echo chamber for your demonstrably idiotic and false ideas. You can lie as much as you want to the imaginary audience you think both cares enough about this to read your posts and is stupid enough to take you at your word instead of looking at the evidence, but don't act like we're supposed to partake with you in your delusions.

Explorer and Venturer only, I'm still trying to settle into ACKS and most of the campaign classes are just inaccurate enough to my campaign that they make me want to do my own.
>>
>>98866756
I don't like Explorer personally. I think it's basically just the - at 9th level I have to fuck off from the kingdom building everyone is doing to go live in the woods - part.

As for the campaign classes I adapted Assassin, bladedancer and priestess pretty well to my campaign but I get what you mean. My big thing atm is that the only online class creator tool is for ACKS 1E rather than II so I feel it might not be compatible in areas.
>>
>>98866756
I've seen ACKShills tries to promote the game as something other than a very niche system in order to try to justify their heavyhanded (and politically motivated) shilling in places the game definitely doesn't belong, but even just its style and setting don't really fit well with your classic heroic fantasy novel themes that most OSR games are built around. It's a poorly researched Romaboo setting filtered through a guy that thinks including bikini armor in an RPG is how you own the libtards, which probably explains why it got so few backers. Any time it tries to move beyond being just mundane, it chooses to become cringe.

The merchant and explorer are bland classes in terms of style, but they fuck with the basic structure of the game in a way I really don't like.
>>
>>98866837
ACKS is a mistake of a game played by people who were also likely mistakes.
I had a GM try to borrow some rules from it, and after fifteen minutes of messing around with pdfs and dice he told us the assorted monster parts we were trying to sell would get us slightly more gold.
After he saw our reactions I don't think he touched that game again and we were much happier for it.

You don't even play games, you can't produce a legible character sheet, and at this point it's almost a guaranteed fact that you are just a demoralization intern trying to whether the user base of the site like killing off any interest.

The lurkers and tourists are nowhere near dumb enough to believe him. You couldn't solve captchas if you were that dumb.

This is 4chan. Anonymity means people come here with doubt and suspicion, and none of this guys ideas, stories, or mythology make any sense. Some might play along with it, but we're talking about ideas that are inherently stupid and illogical to the point no rational person could believe in them.

He imagines a world where complete newfags will listen to him and only him, and never bother to read about the OSR beyond the four blogs that agree with him, which have to ignore considerable amounts of easily accessible evidence that contradicts them. Even some of the handful of people who read those blogs and comment on them disagree with them.

He thinks he can samefag while accusing others of samefagging and people will only believe him. He does it so shamelessly that it's insulting to everyone's intelligence. No matter how dumb people are, and I know they can be very dumb, you'd have to be completely braindead to fall for his shit.

Even if he could get his concept of a boardwide-hugbox established and forced everyone here to either agree with him or leave, that wouldn't last very long because he's inherently wrong, and the only way he'd maintain that stasis is if no one aware of the world outside his echo chamber came here. What he wants either will die itself or requires the stagnation (and ultimately the death) of its host.

The lies even he doesn't believe, aimed at newfags? Worthless. The lies he actually believes himself though, that's what drives him.

But you're probably right about him never being able to wake up from his own delusions. There's probably no evidence in the world that could overpower the delusions he's operating under.

My personal hypothesis is that it was created specifically as a demo/prototype for those ideas before they were part of the wider game, and just ended up getting grandfathered in because the core team was already used to it.

Part of that is because I spent some time recently trying to rework it into a Chainmail style creature, and it strikes me as being fairly similar in play but very different in description.

>>98868534
I just looked it up, and the reason it's so weird is that it was made by Terry Kuntz, Rob Kuntz's older brother, around when the they had only been playtesting the game for about 2 months at that point. Terry was only 19 at the time, and would end up not designing much else, so its weirdness comes from it being a non-Gygaxian, non-Arnesonian monster made by a teenager at a time when no one really knew what the game was going to end up being yet.
>>
>>98867667
>They did it to exclude me, reeeee-
Yes because you were talking about shit that wasn't thread relevant and insisting it was.
What of it?
>>
Terry didn't write much, but he did write a few things for Dragon, including a defense of wargaming. What's surprising is that even in 1980, roleplaying games were still considered under the larger umbrella of wargaming. I'm actually curious when it occurred that RPGs became seen as their own distinct category as opposed to a sub-category of wargaming.
>>
>>98868534
I think it's too strong/deadly for it to be a demo monster. All of its cool and unique mechanics tend to get overshadowed by it just being able to shoot death beams.
>>
>>98868780
I can see why he didn't write much.
>>
>>98867667
I think the key thing to highlight in that confession was that he was getting his shit deleted but still kept trying to figure out how to sneak his shit into the OP without people reporting him.

>I'm actually curious when it occurred that RPGs became seen as their own distinct category as opposed to a sub-category of wargaming.
Probably a gradient.

Between 1980 and 1990 they were seperating.

By the time Vampire the Masquerade hit the scene they were pretty seperate though. I think by then you had lots of roleplayers who had never played a wargame and had no interest in them.

According to Jim Dunnigan of SPI the wargaming industry collapsed around 1982. TSR purchased SPI and continued publishing Strategy & Tactics magazine until 1987, when they deciding that wargaming wasn't going to recover and sold the magazine. Avalon Hill survived the demise of wargaming in part because they had already diversified beyond hex and counter wargames. Their purchase of RuneQuest in 1984 was part of their diversification strategy. I doubt many people saw RPGs as a category of wargaming after 1982.

So anyway, here's the Elven Nightblade. It's pretty much a BX-ification of an AD&D Magic-User/Thief, with a higher maximum level than the Spellsword (the standard B/X Elf) and fewer XP to advance, but with a slower progression in spells.

And here are the Nightblade "Templates". They're the ACKS II version of the kits of AD&D 2e, only they don't suck ass like the AD&D 2e ones, because they're written by someone who is great at writing rules, unlike the retards who created the most dogshit edition of any D&D-branded edition.
>>
>>98876863
The way templates work is you roll 3d6, get a set of proficiencies to define your character a bit more, some starting equipment, and you're good to go. This makes creating characters actually faster than B/X.

It's not 100% his fault. I used to work fairly closely with salespeople, and the unfortunate truth is that the most important factor in regards to how effective an advertising campaign is going to be is always going to be the underlying quality of the product. Good products basically sell themselves and the salespeople are only too happy to sell it. Selling a good product practically makes them feel like they're doing people a favor.

Nothing makes a salesperson more neurotic and self-destructive than having to sell a product they know is bad. Even worse when it's a borderline scam. I've seen salespeople go from the nicest, happiest people to the nastiest, spiteful, and miserable people just because the product they were hocking went from something people might actually want to buy to something they knew people could only be tricked into buying and would regret doing so.

You sound like you've been stuck shilling a bad product for a long time.

Our department goes through a lot of different clients, and by company-wide consensus the worst decision was when our DH made a deal with a gray-area gambling organization a few years back. It was for a lot of money, enough that he thought it was worth having a big announcement and celebration over, but everyone down the line knew it was a mistake and we ended up having our reputation immediately fall apart and we've had to spend the last several years rebuilding everything. Our salespeople went from naturally likable professionals to so aggressively neurotic that they were burning bridges even within the company, and all because the big product they had to try and get people on board with was something everyone knew was a life-destroying money extractor that made even other forms of gambling look benign.

Most forms of selling something do involve some measure of exaggeration, a little massaging of the facts to make things look better than they really are. But when you have to wake up every day knowing you're going to have to spend it lying with a smile on your face about a product everyone knows is a scam while people silently or loudly want nothing from you but for you to go fuck yourself, it chips away at your soul pretty quickly. Most of our sales and ad teams quit within the year, and the people left were mostly just the sociopaths taking advantage of a bad situation to enrich themselves as best they could.

It was a hard lesson, but since then we drew some pretty hard lines about what kind of companies we're willing to work with. Some people and products are just not worth the millions of dollars they're offering, especially because there's no shortage of companies that have products much easier to sell that look much better for us to be selling.

Really looking forward to pirating the new Beyond All Others elf classes when they come out. In the meantime, here's the Elven Spellsinger from the Heroic Fantasy Handbook.

Spellsinging is an alternative magic style that uses spell points and even allows to improvise spells that the character doesn't know... at a risk.

It goes together with the Shaded Magic rules that classify *all* spells in the game as either White, Grey, or Black, and gives physical, spiritual, and mental corruption effects to those who cast Black spells. It's inspired by Tolkien and Howard. I've never run a campaign with this system, but I might one day.

It's just more of that "want to have their cake and eat it too" logic that these trolls run on.

They want the game to be political when they're promoting the game as a way to own the libtards, but then they immediately fall back to "why you guys getting political about this?" whenever they're called out on that. It's so cowardly.

They want to upset people by spamming ACKS and make sure everyone understands they're trolling and hoping to kill threads with their obnoxious behavior, but they also don't want anyone to think that they're just petty trolls and the game is worthless for any real purpose and just kills any actual discussion, like it's done in the /osrg/.

It's endless paradoxes like these, where they demand "TRVE GYGAXIAN GAMES ONLY" in order to try and get rid of many of the newer and more popular OSR titles like MorkBorg and Shadowdark that are increasingly in vogue, but they try to carve out their 3e-inspired, splat-and-rules-heavy abomination of a system, despite it being against the foundational core of the OSR. It's just layer after layer of hypocrisy, which is why most people just give up trying to deal with them. They can't be argued with because they don't operate with logic, so all that can be done is occasionally highlighting how fucking dumb they are and otherwise doing your best to avoid and ignore them.

That's incredibly generous.
It looks like stuff ChatGPT churned out back when it would hallucinate every fifth sentence. It's so soulless and boring that it's actually scary to think that this is the stuff the ACKShill thinks is good. I'd hate to see what he thinks is bad if these are the high water marks.

That's what the /osrg/ has turned into, a containment thread for the ACKShills. And, even the ACKShills hate the hugbox they made.
They spend more time in these threads than they do in their own thread, because even they're aware that no one wants to stay in an ACKShill containment thread, not even ACKShills.
>>
>>98877655
It exists because its easier to make a new thread then it is to bother dealing with obsessives samefagging retards.
And, that's kind of why no matter what you try, no matter how obsessively and aggressively you try to shitpost your way to getting what you want, people are just going to keep doing what they do while you keep chasing after them, begging for their attention.

AYRT and I've never said that. I thought this was a thread for open discssion of OSR games. ACKS is an OSR game (and it seems like the most popular one by far, ITT.) So...?

This is one of my favourite monsters from ACKS. A Tokay Gull is a cross between a gull and a tokay gecko. They're adorable, they bark when enemies approach (like tokay geckos), and for this reason they're kept and bred by kobolds as guardians.

I've used them in my dungeon and my players have a love-hate relationship with them.

I heard another one of their group got themselves banned from Reddit so they're stuck trying to shill his new book in the /osrg/.
I'm kind of amazed of how few of them there actually are and how they keep repeating each other's mistakes.
>>
>>98878757

I was wondering why they were so upset this week.
>>
>>98878757
>>98878761

>>
>>98878766
They're frustrated and upset. Also, everytime they try posting outside of the /osrg/ it doesn't really work out for them. Even in the Open OSR all that really happens is they add to the post count and make themselves look exactly like the kind of idiots that made the board turn against them.

These are not clever people making smart moves. They're desperate guys self-sabotaging themselves by being dumb assholes and having no options beyond being dumb assholes.
>>

I was wondering why they were shilling "babies' first heartbreaker DMG" in the /osrg/ so hard and so... poorly.
I didn't realize it's because they lost out on the Reddit market. That probably means a cascading effect too.
What got him banned?
>>
>>98878800
If that happened to me, I'd just be confused and see why it was done in error and how it could be reversed, because I'm not the kind of person who would be dumb enough to say or do something that would deplatform me.
I'm actually shocked it's happened again to these guys. They really just don't know how to not be stupid.

I looked at the pages they posted.

...getting banned from Reddit doesn't look like it was going to affect his sales very much.

>What got him banned?
Looking at the annoucement post, no official reason was given, but the most upvoted explanations are that it seems that people recently started using him as an excuse to start political trolling.

Just a repeat of the same mistake they did with ACKS.

There's an ACKS thread up right this minute.
Fishfuckhead could have left it alone and people would've left him alone in turn, but if you go peak your big, hooked beak in you'll notice he didn't.

That's the main problem Fish runs into. He wants the right to be able to fuck with and shit all over other threads and people without hesitation, but when the consequences follow him home with torches and pitchforks, he starts bitching about how he didn't do nuffin, while still continuing to engage in the same bullshit at the same time in the exact same posts.

Words have no meaning for such a person, they're just magic spells he's trying to cast to get people to do what he wants, but because he's got the IQ of a pumpkin he can't model other peoples minds and therefore lacks the capacity for such manipulation.
