This is a temp thread. Relax. Someone will make an old traditional one next time.

>What is /hwg/?
Any wargames that don't have their own thread and which /awg/ ( Alternative Wargames) hates or pretends to hate.

>What is /h&c/?
Hex and Chit or Hex and Counters. These are wargames played on a hexgrid using little square pieces with numbers on them.

>Example /hwg/s
Lion Rampant, SAGA. DBA, DBM, and DBMM. Pillage, Barons' War, and Never Mind The Billhooks. Bolt Action. Flames of War and Team Yankee. AK-47 Republic. Spectre (and successors). Black Ops. Fistful of TOWs. Cold War Commander and Blitzkrieg Commander.

Anything by Too Fat Lardies (Chain of Command) and most of the stuff by Peter Pig

>Novice Troves, meant to serve as a sampler of available systems. Check out the Share Thread for up-to-date troves.

Yes it's a very fun game. Im not a huge fan of the dark ages, but I like it more than other dark age games I've played mechanically. It's better than Saga, Ravenfeast, etc.

Love it, cold war conflict is so kino... You have cool stuff that didn't exist in WW2 like and helicopters, but its not like ultramodern where it's just IEDs and drones and faggot shit. The era of the backpack antenna RTO is peak.

I really do hate that neoprene battlemat you have those fine minis on, though. I feel like playing on a 2d battlemat is similar to playing with unpainted models
>>
>>98834888
I agree 100% about the era. Don’t much care for the ultra-modern stuff. I never enjoyed making terrain like I do painting minis. I do have trees, and a couple buildings and little hills to place on the mat though.

Does anyone know any wargames where both players make their orders to their men simultaneously, and then spend the turn trying to act them out ???
>>
>>98837095
I'm not sure what you're after, can you clarify by adding nore question marks to your post and maybe an exclamation point or five?
>>
>>98837242
Both players issue orders by either writing them on a paper, or telling it to an umpire without the other player knowing. Then they simultaneously start acting out their orders at the same time, if the other players orders move his men in a way that's stops you from acting out your orders obviously they have to resolve via battle or retreat

Made a bit more progress on a VERY old project. Only regret is that there are too many wonderful miniatures in the kit (the Revell Imperial artillery) to fit on a gaming base without it looking far too cramped and crowded, but I'm sure I can find a way to get them into a Camp or some other objective marker.
Hopefully I can knock some troops of Horse off next. I don't know if I'll ever get to use the army in anger, but I have an old (literal) boomer friend who got me into the 17th century who I'd at least like to show it off to while I still can.

If you'd be interested in it we could use some Late Byzantines over in the Expedition Agartha thread for our Atlanteans. There's plenty of ancients, late Roman/early Byzantine, and even Crusades kits for us to draw from for bits but when it comes the the very tail end of the Byzantine empire there seems to be limited options. Someone like Constantine XI or the Cretean guardsman would be great.

There's also more out-there factions like Atlan if you would want to do something outside of the historical sphere I can post art for. And all of the colonial factions too, but most of them are decently covered too (1880s Italians might be the only ones lacking really. US kits for that time are also limited but the uniform changes are simple enough that a headswap can cover most of them a lot of the time)

Trying to pick a Bolt Action army to get into it.
Not familiar with the meta.

Looking at tournament results trying to piece it together. WTC 26 looks like it had a bunch of Japanese lists with a lot of suicide AT. Germany being runner up, and I keep reading about a Panzer III MG list meta.

Considering probably either British or Soviets, looks like USA/Germany is half the playerbase. I'm not familiar with the meta, I was just going to grab a starter set and flesh it out from there with whatever sounds cool/fun. Anything I should avoid to prevent eye rolling at the table, EG a Panzer III list?

Quite a few flying games I've encountered seem to, though they invariably go quasi-IGOUGO when tailing comes into play, of course.
I've seen occasional hints that it was not uncommon (though not too widespread) in certain very old rules; references to THIS ruleset eliminating the need for written orders, implying that such a thing exists, but I couldn't actually tell you any. It wouldn't be too hard to jury-rig, though.

Plenty of Greeks (and Meds in general) have a standard issue European skin tone like that. At least nowadays where they're not all out in the sun all day.
>>
>>98853815
Well the mini is from Crete and is a mercenary so he would be swarthy by default and even darker from being outside all day. And any Greeks with lighter skin can show me their ancestry results, they're bound to be Slavic mutts.
>>
General question for anyone who likes Baron's War: What's its specific virtue as a game? I played a couple small games of it a few months back, and I can't point to anything wrong with it as a game, but I also can't point to anything particularly right. Like, the combat wasn't particularly interesting. The army building had a touch of late 2000s nostalgia, but that's just because my first wargame was 40k 5th edition. So...why play Baron's War in particular?
>>
>>98853866
I'll grant you the tan, sure.
I'm not that familiar with the details of the Slavification of Greece, but in my experience with both modern Crete and, say, modern Scandinavia, there is significant overlap in the bell curves of modern skin tones.

Almost all of Greece was taken over by Slavs that conquered and migrated there during the early Byzantine period, took around or more than 200 years before the Byzantines finally reconquered Greece. Modern mainland Greece are almost as Slavic as they are Greek genetically. The Turks also brought many Slavs into the Ottoman empire who settled in Greece and Thrace. I'll grant you that ancient Macedonians were probably a bit fairer but likely not by much.
>>
File: Are you sure.png (779 KB, 1040x1128)

>>98854502
I was going to argue with you, but supposedly there are a lot of place names in modern day Greece that have Slavic names. However, I need to look into that further as most of the sources you will find saying the people in Greece are mostly Slav, are reddit posts with no sources, forum posts with no sources, or AI confusing modern day Serbia with modern day Greece.
No wait, there is a lot of sources from the period stating that everything is overrun by Slavs.
>>
>>98854613
People do not know how much Slavic dna has spread across the world. Al-Andalus imported a great many Slavic slaves, an entire bodyguard unit of Slavic slaves while the Caliphs were so fond of Slavic women that their descendants had to dye their hair black in an attempt to appear Arab. But Meds have an inferiority complex and wish they were germanic.
>>
>>98854502
Yes, I am aware, but being conquered by is not necessarily the same as being ethnically replaced by. Modern Spaniards carry only little Nordic and Arabic DNA despite being conquered by both for centuries at a time.
So I wouldn't assume that all the standard issue European skin tones in Crete were due to Slav DNA without seeing some evidence for it.
>>
>>98854859
If a modern Iberian has lighter skin and fairer hair then it's from southern France. The ancient Iberians would have been extremely swarthy due to their Anatolian farmer ancestry. And Hellenistic Crete was a backwater plagued by bandits and piracy, so you wouldn't have seen much influx of people. And I do not compare modern people to ancient ones since so many migrations have happened since, or people today moving around and marrying. Crete wasn't conquered by Slavs but it was held by Arabs for more than a century. Meds are naturally swarthy due to Anatolian farmer ancestry, with fairer features coming from outside. Do swarthy Scandinavians exist? Yes, many features of the original hunter gatherers still exist in small pockets. Many also have Finno-Ugric and Siberian ancestry, I've been told that one of my great-great Finnish ancestors was a very dark Finn.
>>
>>98854253
Warlord Games has fully cemented themselves into the role of making games and models based off of corny ass 70s boomer films, and not actually history.
They made a WW2 range, who are the models based off? A Bridge Too Far characters.
They made a Napoleonic wars range, who are the models based off? Sharpes Rifles, of course and the 1970 film Waterloo
Time for another epic range of 12mm figures. Should we make a highly popular and expansive conflict? Nope! Let's make a model range based off the hit boomer fanfic blockbuster, Zulu! With character models based off hit actors Michael Caine and Stanley Baker!!!

>>98854502
This is true. Modern Greece has had 1500 years of Turkic admixture which has resulted in the modern swarthy hairy Greek.

I'd recommend Battlecat Miniatures' Italians. As a bonus, they can be printed as full posed miniatures or as multi-part ones!
The kit's competitors aren't as good: plastic WA Italians aren't great in terms of realism, as some details are off, but yeah, that's still arguably better than the golems Warlord has begun selling since the publication of BA:V3. Their 3D prints (mounted and dismounted Italian cavalry) are better, but have weird proportions, kinda like fantasy dwarves, with short and thick legs and torsos.
>>
>>98854947
You are quite right anon, no one will disagree with that. My interest in the box is the idea of having a full experience, including terrain, in one box and ready to go. I am not a boomer, nor a bong, but this one package seems like a nice way to try out a period, in a semi-historical fashion, with an accessible price. Do you have any experience with their rules set?

I don't think these claims are born out in any DNA studies.
Turks barely left a genetic mark on Turkey itself. Southern French are obviously Meds, not Nords or Slavs.

Look up Alicia Vikander.
Also, here's a genetic map of Iberia showing north African admixture. But this is likely due to ancient crossovers before the Muslim conquests. And the idea that Turks blacked Greece is ridiculous, if anything the Slavs brought the majority of fair features that modern day wewuzzers and Nazis claim as evidence that they used to be white.

Napoleonics or Cold War era modern combat.
Napoleonic has both massive maneuver warfare down to small skirmishes over farmhouses, redoubts, scouting and counter reconnaissance, etc. as well as having the perfectly balanced rock paper scissors between cavalry, infantry, and artillery
Modern warfare from WW2 on has a ton of tactical variety and possibilities for wargaming, but I think the cold war era technology beats out WW2 with the sheer number of technological options, and before warfare became super gay with drones and faggot shit.

How do you guys find local players?

Assuming I can even find a valid Discord link to local FLGS, if there's even a channel for /hwg/ content it's always nothing on a 4+ year old channel or "Anyone?" from 4+ years ago.
>>
>>98856805
I feel like a few words are missing from your explanation.
>>
>>98856820
?
Between Discord, Facebook, website event calendars, etc, the average FLGS is scattered for communication and finding players. Dead links, dead invites, dead pages, dead channels, etc. Then when people do find each other, they spin off into their own private group chats.

Short of calling a store and asking if people come in to play a specific game, how do you guys find people for more niche stuff like /hwg/ content?
>>
>>98856836
A FLGS is a physical location, but I have now deduced that you want to know how to meet up with people at your closest or handful of closet games stores.

I think we need to locate older people and figure out how they met people before social media. I presume they visited the local game store regularly and looked to see who showed up?

Or perhaps you go to a few local game stores on Friday night or something like that, and see who is there?

Or perhaps you visit the game store and ask how people would schedule to meet up there?

Every Facebook comment was boomers thanking them and overjoyed about being able to buy less models at a higher price per mini. Truly absurd. >>
>>98859817
How are they a mess? They are wearing early Norman helmets, which was very popular among the First Crusade
>>
>>98859920
NTA, but just compare the pic you posted with Victrix.
>>
>>98860074
I just looked up Victrix and all their models are wrong as fuck, or meant for the latest Crusades. Everyone should look like late 800s or early 1100s Normans, but they all are wearing very late Middle Ages equipment, including Gambesons, which is 1300s.

Their Norman infantry line is better, but it just looks like well, this. Only with more mail armor
>>98858901

Actually, I think the kite shields are noticeably too small in that image. The Norman models from Victrix are better in that regard. The round part shouldn't be the size of a buckler.
>>
>>98859920
Compare with the Perry's first crusade range. The issue is that they're using tabards over maile which wasn't a thing at the time, weapons and shields are also badly sized. I didn't suggest looking at victrix, those are a bit early for the first crusade. And I'm suspecting you're an idiot if you think their high medieval kits are meant for the first crusade.

>>
>>98860427
Barons' War is the most notable game that covers the era, it's okay, but could probably do with a Reconquista focused supplement as mostly, it's focused on France and England in the same time period. Never Mind The Billhooks is another option, though it's more suited to the tail end of the period. I haven't tried it, but there's at least one poster in here who likes it.

>>98858901
A friend who went to a con got the banner bearer tester model they were handing out. Here it is next to a WGA mini that I really should've painted better.

The flagpole was badly bent, which is a consequence of it being resin cast. The mini's 32mm rather than 28mm, which makes it too big to look good next to all 28mm ranges. That's enough of a problem I won't be buying their minis. No way I'm maintaining two separate mini scales. Might use the Victrix carolingians for Martyrdom if the rules turn out to be any good.
>>
>>98861384
Can't you just print it at 85% or something and get it down to a more normal and dignified scale?

The historical accuracy is going to be loose because its an Osprey game, but Outremer: Faith and Blood covers the later periods. A lot of the Muslim forces were arab so Saracen isn't that off, forget where the Umayyad's got their soldiers who weren't Berbers from specifically though. Armies during the dark ages are very very small, espially from mountains, thick forests, hyper hilly areas, and literal fucking deserts.

The faster the conquests, the less they have any impact at all on the local people genetically.

There's a LOT of options for buying resin printed vehicles and tanks from people's webstores for like 1/4 the price of MSRP model kits for the same scale.

How do they really compare once on the table? Is it worth paying 3-4x as much for a sprue kit vs a 3D printed tank?
>>
>>98866573
Worth is pretty subjective and I guess it boils down to each person's criteria. If you find a model you like and whoever does the printing does everything right(!), you'll get something that works on the table just fine if you do your part. Resin models may not handle impacts as well as injection molded ones and I think that's pretty important to note. I'm kind of expecting people selling resin prints are using a pretty standard resin, which usually an "ABS like" or something with a shore durometer of 85ish
Detail-wise, for 3D models, you'll find stuff that's pretty crappy all the way up to museum like pieces that would be a bit too much for table top.

1/72 is really not that much smaller than 28mm to make it worth it considering the extreme drop in model quality.
The sweet spot for napoleonics is 10-15mm.
Honestly Warlord Games epic range is very cheap and good quality despite being made by Warlord, and pretty easy to get into. The only draw back is that its intended for Waterloo (Warlord won't make a model range unless it revolves around the bongs) so your only army options are British, Prussian, and French.
French are mandatory, so your only real choice is whether you want them to fight Prussians or Bongs

Russia is my favorite army and unfortunately never the most supported army by any model company.
You could probably use the french to represent Russians, id just shave off the pompom on the shako and then they would be pretty hard to tell apart at this scale. The Russian shako in in 1812-1815 was a little different (the best place lookinh shako in the napoleonic wars) but again it's hard to tell at this scale. You don't have any way to model any of the Russian grenadiers or anything though

>>
>>98877504

There are a handful of H&C Lepanto games. Most are operational but a few are tactical level you want. The nature of naval warfare is that most H&C games are easily ported to minis and vice versa. Most time all you need to do is translate hex size into inches or cms and you're good to go. SPI's S&T magazine had a good version of Lepanto late in it's run.

As for minis, the only rules set I've ever seen used for Lepanto is "Sea Battles in Miniature". The author points out that at the game's level there is little difference between the Classical era's stone throwers and archery and the early Renaissance's crude artillery and "handgonnes". Battles are still decided primarily by boarding actions.

Damn sperg, I dont even know enough about this to know what you're crying about. Did a Space Marine rape you?

I just want hard plastic Islamic factions to display against a Visigoth army I'm slowly putting together. The only table top game I've ever played is Pillage and I want to try Lions Rampant. But mostly I just like painting and building minis. I have Victrix Islamic Army, but I want a little more variety. I saw a youtube video of the campaign, some of the models looked cool, I also saw they had a Byzantine caraphract and I want one. But I dont want resin printed STL and ironically, I guess, I dont like mono-pose plastic.
>>
>>98879781
So you admit to not caring about historical accuracy. The minis in Martyrdom are not particularly accurate to the period, even less so against Visigoths.
>>98863548
This is what the minis should look like opposing Visigoths.
>>
>>98879808
About Muslims? Slightly, and if Victrix comes out with a set for the early Islamic caliphates I'll buy it. Right now Im kitbashing Victrix Islamic and Late Romans Infantry and Gripping Beast Arabs. I litterally saw one video on a new from Matrydom and asked if they are in hard plastic. I didnt know it was going to bring up some dramatic memories for you. But if you know other manufacturers for perfect Early Islamic armies that pass your purity test, let me know, I would appreciate it.

I want minis in longer tunics, chain mail and lamillar armor. They have them based one the video I saw. I'm not a fan of the proportions but again, I'll be kitbashing. All for a faction I dont even want to play with, just for display against my Visigoths that Im autistically putting together, kitbashing Victrix Late Romans, Saxons, and Carolingians and I'm still not that happy with them (I have to scratch build a saddles because the Goths didnt use the Persian Roman four pronged saddle) and would buy a Victrix Visigothic kit if they end up making one for the Pillage expansion.

If you have access to a resin printer, check out Reconquer Designs. I printed a couple of their figs and they're pretty nice, but currently working on some 15mm stuff for Chain of Command, so I won't be really diving into the Reconquista scene for a while yet.
>>
>>98879902
I dont like their proportions. They look nice at a larger scale, but at 28mm not so much, the weapons are too thin and fragile and they wouldnt look good next to other manufacturers. And I just prefer plastic. I have some parts from WGA resin prints that I've glued onto plastic.

Actually the RD Visigoth/Asturian minis were the first 28mm minatures I ever bought. And year and a half later I have a huge box full of gray shame. Playing a grand total of 3 games.

6mm works the best for big battles, imo, decent amount of stuff to choose from and small enough you can just use substitute figures
10mm is ok but quite basic and might be difficult to get certain things, also getting expensive for the size, though it's my main scale but I'd never do napoleonics in it

It is, though starer kits make a good job of gradually easing you in. Starter Kit #1 is basically a board game, the most complicated thing to wrap around being 10 different shooting phases, #2 lulls you into thinking the game can't be that hard after all, then you are suddenly hit with twice the amount of rules in #3 and if you survive that you are mentally ready to start reading the full rulebook, which is 20x the length of the SK. protip: unless you already have a magnifying glass and tweezers, use vassal in single player mode to practice

Looking for some painting advice. I'm a novice, I have a starter set of Vallejo acrylics but that's all. Looking to buy some paints to use for this wonderful set of Napoleonics figures. I know this is a studio paintjob and mine are not going to look anywhere near as good but I'd like to at least give it a go.
What sort of colours would you recommend for these greatcoat guys. I'd rather not do any more paint mixing myself. I'm having trouble particularly with the whites and beiges. The blue greatcoats I was thinking to use Runic gray speedpaint, would that get me anywhere close?

What's your budget? I wouldn't advise using speed paints as a beginner. Piano Wargames has a painting guide for his French infantry.

Thanks, I had a look. Unfortunately the guy is mostly using Citadel paint colour names and I hate their shitty pots. So it's not quite as spoonfeedy as I'd hoped.
Also this 1:1:1 mix story is insanity. I'm not going to use a goddamn syringe to measure out paint amounts. Not to mention buying three different pots for one paint step. I will admit I have used Nuln oil before and it looked a lot shitter. When he says generous wash I'm imagining the figure basically dipped in the wash, lots of dark stains and a shiny appearance, which is completely different from what is shown here. Is there no ready made solution? Or do I go for a slightly darker bone colour and drybrush up to white instead?

How can someone be so hopelessly clueless? Some adults really need hand held with everything...
I was going to answer literally everything you just said but I decided it's not worth the trouble. Is it really so confusing to think about what the equivalent color would be for "GW™ Black Legion contrast"
>>
>>98882260
Check out Sonic Sledgehammer's videos, he paints all kinds of stuff, including Napoleonics, and mostly uses Army Painter paints but doesn't get hung up on specific paints. He also has a recipe for marine juice (black wash, brown wash, medium). That wash works on everything, it really is worth it.

Yes I'm clueless. I told you, I'm asking for advice. Hope you can deign to give me some scraps of knowledge good anon. You don't have to answer my ramblings either, if you can share how you'd do it I'd be just as grateful.
The colour conversion is obviously not a big deal but fuck me there is a lot of choice in paints. For the greatcoats I would need a light blue and a light beige, could you help me what those paints could be called.

The wash this guy talks about does a ton of work in his paintjob as you can see in this picture. It seems absolutely essential to the result and I just don't think I can make this happen if I need to mix up this wonder juice myself.
>>
>>98882350
You don't need a syringe to make the wash, any paint besides GW comes in dropper bottles. You just put one drop of each color, hence 1:1:1. With GW paints you can put one drop on the end of a brush, but it's harder than a dropper bottle. The medium is essential. I use army painter strong tone, soft tone and army painter medium 1:1:1. Specific colors aren't important. Nuln oil is a blackish brown, earth shade is brown, and lahmian medium is a medium. You don't need specific colors. Citadel Buttfucker Blue™ is just a deep royal blue and any company with a similar looking blue will work. Uniforms and dyes were not made in factories with exact recipes in the 1800s and everyones coat would be slightly different, especially because dye faded very quickly.
A generous wash just means coat your brush and lather is all over, not dip.

This Piano Wargames guide is interesting because it's essentially exactly how I paint my french, except I use Vallejo with Army Painter washes
>>
>>98882401
Much obliged good sir. Doesn't seem as daunting when you put it like this, although I'm surprised the 1:1:1 wash is not available as an off-the-shelf mix when it's apparently so common. I feel very stupid for asking but those 3 drops are not enough for the entire mini right? Could you ballpark how much I'd need to wash the mini like in step 1? Like closer to one drop of each or ten drops.

Idk I only batch paint, I do 10 drops, 10:10:10. If I run out I mix more, it takes 15 seconds. I don't keep track.

Mixing paint is foundational stuff, not advanced. It's literally the basics. You could theoretically paint anything with 5 paints if you learn to mix well: red, yellow, blue, black, white.

This anon >>98883148 listed everything I would have, especially:

1 - Discussion of rules/mechanics and their relation to historical accuracy, and...
2 - Interesting situations that came up in the game

A big feature in any good AARs is whether or not they give the reader a preview of the rules. Especially whether the rules reflect and reward historical tactics, organizations, C3I issues, etc. If rules set is nothing but "We both line up, move forward until we bump into each other, and then role buckets of dice until someone rolls enough dice higher than the other guy" aka the WarHamster play style.

Also, an AAR needn't present all the details or even all the turns just as long as the reader understand why the action turned out the way it did.

I have honestly read almost everything there is on DBA Auxilia (Solid) and it's shocking how there is zero agreement, even in Slingshot. Some supposedly well educated people even argue that people either fight shoulder to shoulder densely, or they are spread out like slingers.

I've been wanting to paint up some Austrian or Russians to oppose my french force. Russia is my favorite army "lore" wise and Austria is appealing due to being the most consistent opponent of the French and for having stupidly simply (fast) uniforms to paint.
Unfortunately, I REALLY wanted to avoid the British. Lord knows the world doesn't need yet another British Napoleonic player, but my wife knows my passion for Napoleonics and surprised me with some miniatures - British line infantry and light dragoons.
I'm thinking I can paint them as the KGL instead of regular Brits, and I can potentially use them as a "What-if" attachment to a larger Austrian or Russian force in some imaginary scenario where the british actually help the allies fight the French

I'm not the Brit hating guy. I just didn't want to play British because they are grossly overrepresented in the hobby despite being a small faction with minimal engagement. Some areas have more brit players than French, it's absurd. There are more books written about Waterloo than all other battles of the Napoleonic War combined, despite it being a fair uninteresting battle compared to Austerlitz, Leipzig, Aspern-Essling, Borodino, etc.
>>
>>98884653
Is this entirely because of Sharps or whatever the show is? I thought it was very interesting, but it gets a lot of details wrong, despite the budget.
>>
>>98884653
Isn't the issue that Russian and Austrian historians write in their own native language? We play and buy British products so we can expect a full miniature line for the 12th Niger river expedition 1843 AD. I wish we had access to Chinese and Japanese texts.
>>
>>98884682
I think it's similar to what this anon said >>98884683 that because we (Americans, Brits, Canadians, Australians) are native English speakers we tend to think of the English speaking people as the "Us," the Good Guys and everyone else as the "Other." Additionally, being native English speakers the media we engage (in the English language)with all has a heavy bias for the English speakers, yes Sharpe for example. Sharpe is very clearly pro-British propaganda and quite ridiculous historically, but Sharpe and other medias like it are the lens that we view history through. English speakers (British) obviously are going to heavily overemphasize Waterloo instead of Leipzig, for example, because the former heavily involves then and the latter doesn't. Any actual student of history knows that Napoleon met his end at Leipzig, and that Waterloo was a brief reattempt to establish the Empire that power that he had already lost. It's similar to how in America we tend to over exaggerate the US influence in WWI, you have cornballs talking about "Back to Back World War Champs" when our involvement in WW1 was far less significant than anyone else involved.
>>
>>98882642
I'm with you, except
>Nationalism didn't exist
I think you mean "Romanticism" (or perhaps erroneously "nation states"). Nations absolutely existed, and many people absolutely identified with their nations to some degree (this goes all the way back into pre-history btw). And nation-states have also existed for centuries. Denmark has essentially been a nation-state for a millennia (plus some overseas possessions).
>>
>>98884929
I assume he means the Enlightenment ideology of nationalism which partly develops as a reaction to the multi-ethnic Empires in Central Europe. Even if the formalised ideology didn't fully develop until the 19th century people knew what nation (ethnic group) they belonged to long before that.
>>
>>98885421
As mentioned, I'd call that movement Romanticism - and that's a reaction against the Enlightenment, not a part of it.
Nobody becomes a (Romantic) nationalist out of a sense of cold logic. It comes from emotional attachment to your extended family and its culture and an instinct for sovereignty, which opposes the ivory towerisms of Enlightenment rule by (alleged) rationality and science.

There are points where you are likely confusing civilizations with nations. During the Roman times, nothing outside of the Roman Empire in Europe was either.

The Goths and all the others were confederations and sub confederations, and many of these supposed peoples were... Let's look at the Goths.

The Goths are from around Estonia. Most of their number are not from Estonia. So only the elites were from Estonia. The rest of them were people conquered along the way to the Balkans, mercenaries, hangers on.

They defeated the Sarmatians, and then the lot of Goths and Sarmatians were conquered by the Huns, and other servant people's got folded into them.

Except that's just the West Huns or...

My point is that a lot of these groups are multiple groups ruled over by another group, and who the fuck knows how they even communicate outside their languages being vaguely similar.

>>
>>98887292
Wargamers wanting things to be more readable for wargamers is hardly surprising. Any given group will want things to cater to them
>>
>>98887287
I will never understand why people obsess so much over a time period where people mostly stand in line and get shot at. It's basically an era where wars are won with B1 battle droids and half decent use of cannons. Is that the point? Shapes had to get everything wrong and have us follow light infantry, then have us following guerilla warfare and game of thrones politics, for us to care at all. It's all down to numbers and do your men fire slowly/run away a lot.
>>
>>98887310
Maneuvering blocks of troops around and properly using cannons is the important part of napoleonic battles. That's easy to simulate on the tabletop and also places most of the importance on the general's decisions, IE the player's. So a battalion or regiment scale napoleonic wargame can be realistically decided by a wargamer.

... yes? Who were you trying to make historical wargame after action reports for? I was assuming it would be for people who play wargames but do you mean as a way to introduce the concept to a different group?
If so the writeup really varies based on your purpose there and it'll help to have more of an idea of what that is.
>>
>>98887705
The wargame is just a tool to conceptualize a battle and have it flow in a way that makes sense. Asking about what others would read, was just trying to survey a group that reads about fictional battles, what might be interesting to read. The main problem is that the potential audience doesn't want exposure to the complexity (too much information), depth (information requires prior information to understand), or whatever we feel when we kill enemy units or compete in tournaments or shoot people in FPS games.

Ergo, a plausible and functional battle scene is needed, where either side can win or lose, but it can't be presented in a way that anyone would want to read. Battles want to be third person oni present out of character, but the battle needs to be written completely first person.

This is a very weird requirement.

Less readable for for anyone who isn't a wargamer? Just who the fuck are you writing AFTER ACTION REPORTS for if not wargamers?

If you're writing a piece of fiction ala "Sharpe" and other similar 1st person LARP shit, an AAR will be far too detailed. That will turn off the causal reader while annoying the reader who is a gamer. You need understand just what an AAR actually is and to do that you need to check out the troves and find copies of the pre-Hasbro Avalon Hill's magazine "The General".

Avalon Hill used AARs to showcase and explain games and/or rules sets to the potential game purchasers and players. They read the turn by turn account of a game with the players discussing their decisions and reacting to results as the game mechanics were explained.

AARs aren't some shitty creative writing LARP exercise featuring Captain J. Authorial Insert of the 8th Moronican Horse Marines in the 3rd Battle of Sim Sala Bim with gritty details provided some game. After Action Reports are - Surprise! - REPORTS of actual game play, actual in-game decisions, actual game results, and actual game mechanics.

Fireforge makes some of the most baffling decisions when it comes to their kits. Off the top of my faulty memory :
>berber infantry is paired kit with black guards
>only black guards have command options on the sprue.
>This also means you have 1 standard and a drum for every 6 or so dudes
>black guards do not have enough hands with matching sleeves to build the entire matching unit without using arms from command part. Seriously what the fuck.
>Saladin sucks, pose is very stiff, get the one from Gripping Beast while you still can.
Other, not saracen related things:
>more legs than torsos and spare hands. If you have enough artistic skill to make a fucking square out of putty you can get up to 30% more dudes from your dudes.
>heroic scale, noticable but not too bad.
>horses suck. Period.
>sprues will have other absolutly baffling choices, like dwarves having three different kinds of connections to firearms, or them having 20% female dwarf heads.
In the end as can be seen my nitpicks are pretty minor, the plastics are honestly better than most metal miniatures representing these units and I am a repeated customer (with maybe some slight regrets.)

Maybe if you're retarded.

Let's look at Persians vs Greeks.

One side has some of the densest "Bows" in human history, some of the worst infantry (Horde in many system), cavalry that uses ranged weapons, elephants, and so on.

The other side has some of the densest and slowest, but most powerful "Spears" in human history. They have skirmishers, mediocre cavalry, and depending on situation they may have bows.

Plus their political systems and command structures are so different.
>>
>>98891969
When the successors of Alexander are fighting each other, then it gets a bit samey, but at least some sides have Elephants and some don't. Some use more missile units, some have light horses, and some do or don't use pikemen. Some don't have any Knights (Fast), while others are like 25% that unit type.

Then the Romans show up to fight the Greeks, and then you got this dynamic where they should be weaker, but they win somehow and people argued a lot about that. The current agreement is their units were more flexible.

Maybe the Pilum was really important?

Regardless, you got legions spamming Blades, maybe with Shock, which is a totally different army composition. They don't have any Knights (Fast) and no Elephants.

Then we have Carthage.

And we have a mixture of Spears, Medium Infantry, and Warband. We got a little of everything, but not really any Blades.

And again, a very different political organization system, so that might effect initiative or command structure.
>>
I lost my next post but whatever.
>>98892013
Dark Ages, we have Warbands, that I would argue need to be Blades (Fast) some proportion of the time as the Romans lied about numbers, and they obviously outnumbered their enemies most of the time.

So for all of the Republic and most of the Empire, the people living north of them "Germans", have an aggressive fighting style but smaller shields, and they may or maynot have swords.
-
-
There is a point where the Roman soldiers are cosplaying as Germans and like a third of them are Germans, plus both sides are using shock missiles, heavy cav, bows, and so on.

But at least the Romans are mostly fighting in a more solid and defensive way, vs a more mobile, unorganized, and aggressive way.

Unless they're fighting the Goths or Franks, who just recently were more or less in the legions.
>>
>>98891969
>my brown guys with spears bows and shields standing in a line are SOOO different from your brown guys with spears bows and shield standing in a line

>>
>>98892064
>>Barbarian Kingdom vs Barbarian Kingdom

The Barbarians are rather similar sometimes, and it almost becomes like Napoleonic warfare

Except

The Franks don't have any Knights [Fast or Exception or Otherwise) until like Charlemagne. They are famous for not using the Kontos or barding their horses, like the Goths or Byzantines. Also they have shock missiles and the Goths don't. Also most of their neighbors who they conquer don't have shock missiles.

The Burgundians may or may not spam two handed axemen, the continental Saxons have Bows in greater number than their neighbors,
-
-
If you think the armies in Dark Ages Britannia fight anywhere the same, you're a double moron so I will skip that.
>>
>>98892088
Again, we know you are retarded.

In basically every single wargame or even video game, the Persian infantry are basically peasants or worse. They have no fighting power, they run away all the time, and their shields are literally made of wicker or they're like made of something close to bamboo or they weight twice what other peoples shields weight.

WAB has them basically be cover they plant, that stops missiles, and that's it.

Meanwhile the Greeks have spears that are very long, they're so good in combat everyone employs them as mercenaries or copies them, and they have bronze armor some proportion of the time.
-
-
Then you have how the Persians are spamming Bows, while the Greeks have way less Bows, but the Cretan archers are very good. Some wargames would have the Persian bows mixed in or the rear ranks of their spearmen, while the Greeks have their archers as completely separate formations.
>>
>>98892110
>according to video games
I stopped reading right there. The point of my comment was show how retarded it is to make reductionist generalizations like you did about the Napoleonic era. Anyone can make uneducated generic reductions about any period.
>>
>>Middle Ages

In the middle ages, we see some kingdoms, duxdoms, duchies and so forth that have spam Spears (Anglo-Saxons / English), and depending on ruleset, they're better than average or just more numerous than their enemies.

The English have the Billhook, eventually, but they don't really use crossbows, and their cavalry is among the worst of the time period. They learn or steal the longbow from the Welsh, and that makes them very different from everyone else on the continent for a very long time.

The Franks transition to being almost entirely mounted infantry, that fight quite well mounted or on foot. No one else can do that. They then have the best cavalry, except the Byzantines, after they copy the technology the Byzantines have. As years pass, they have smaller and smaller armies, that are more and more expensive, and more and more mounted.

Byzantine cataphracts, Byzantine elite spearmen, Byzantine armies that are small as fuck but very powerful. Even smaller and more powerful than French armies. Byzantine elite swordsmen depending on time and place.

We also skipped all those Hun and Mongol and Avar and Alan armies that spam light horses and/or horse archers. If they fight each other, it could be boring, but usually they're fighting completely different "Germans" or "Romans".

The Persians aren't really different, except they have Cataphracts. They still spam archers way more than anyone else, they still have the worst spearmen I've ever seen which they spam. They often do still have elephants.
-
-
Then we got the Vikings with two handed axes, and often they are fighting knights or spearmen, while they are fast blades or warbands. The Barbarians they fight, stop fighting like barbarians and have started to fight a bit more like Romans.

The 1066 game by Channel 4 does a great job demonstrating how different they are, with a casual game.

It's not a reductionist generalization. Someone else said the appeal is that all the armies are the same, so it means you winning or losing a battle is because of you and not your armies being different.

I have been looking around and I see that sentiment a lot.

>>Black Powder

The best way to prove that Napoleonic warfare is samey and for many people, boring, and lacking in unit types, and all of the armies are basically exactly the same, as much as any period.. (Except maybe like a civil-war, where both sides are literally the same nation/people)...

Is Black Powder.

>Napoleonic warfare has musketeers and looser formations of... musketeers.
Black Powder, has... pikemen, sword and buckler men, matchlock musket, and even sometimes crossbowmen.
The Irish, Spanish, and Slavs use sword and buckler men, or something similar way more, while everyone else uses them way less.

>Napoleonic warfare has a bunch of hussars, and maybe Dragoons, but usually Dragoons are just mounted infantry
Black Powder has literal knights still charging into people despite guns and pikes being a thing. It has people dressed as knights, who trot up to you, fire six to 12 pistols, and then trot away. It has light cavalry with lances, it has heavy cav with lances. Hell, it might even have mounted crossbowmen depending on how early in the gunpower era we are talking.

So, if you can't figure it out, we have like twice as many unit types, and each army is different because they either use these units a lot, not at all, or somewhat.

>>When British television has actual officers wargaming against each other, with other officers being the referee, both sides have almost exactly the same armies, just different numbers of troops and in different spots.

The wargames I've seen, give nearly identical army lists and identical unit types.
-
Long story short, many people, including me, prefer more unit types, different army lists, and political or military differences that might mean an ability depending on the wargame.

The ability can be as simple as having optional shock weapons or two handed axes, or having the option to have better horses and trained cavalry.

The reason why Napoleonic wargamers are so obsessed with every little thing on the uniform, is that's the only way to tell their armies apart besides color. If we had 6mm armies that could be easily repainted, you could just use the same army over and over to represent basically anyone you wanted.

The French have Cuirassiers and some of the formations have a lance rule, but otherwise they have almost identical infantry and identical Hussars and renamed Hussars

>hears Napoleonic period is boring and samey
>thinks
>realizes he can't refute that
"But but all time periods can be described as the same and overly generalized if you're retarded enough!"
>literally tries to say everyone is brown and armed the same, as they have nothing else to say
>can't even give a single example of how the Napoleonic armies were different
>tells me to look at a ruleset
>ruleset has both sides given almost identical units, and it only has two infantry options, and basically two cavalry options.
>>
>>98892314
Hussars are quite similar, except vastly different quality in each nation, but the infantry doctrine and behavior is very different in each army
>>
>>98892314
>French cuirassiers
>Austrian Uhlans and Polish lancers
>Russian Cossacks
>British Cavalry inability to follow orders
>Spanish Guerilla cavalry
Napoleonic cavalry had many unique national differences

Indeed. One must ask; did Swedish pop group ABBA watch too much Sharpe (ITV, 1993) before penning Waterloo (1974), or was it simply the final major battle of almost a quarter century of European wars after which the titular character of the Napoleonic wars abdicated for the final time four days later, never to return from exile.
As something of a student of history myself, one must conclude it to be the former.

This topic is so broad—or, actually, so deep—that I don't know where to start. My friends and I, who started playing this system together, are constantly amazed by the unique *weirdness* of the people who play By Fire and Sword in Poland. It doesn’t help that we live in the city with the largest and most active community of players of this system. If I had to describe it simply: it's a cringe schizophrenic close-knit group of boomers. And to be frank, I wouldn't want it any other way. Pure SOVL.

My friends and I have always wondered what it’s like to play by Fire and Sword without living in Poland, because the system takes on a certain esoteric quality due to the fact that the community consists of the same group of people in their 40s who attend every event in the country, everyone knows each other, and events for 100 people are essentially organized like family gatherings (which has its pros and cons, as you can imagine). Since everyone knows each other and the player base is strangely small yet large at the same time, the game’s developers and distributors have direct contact with most of the players. This means that the most active among them influence changes to the system—they act as beta testers. Players are on a first-name basis with the developers and drink vodka or whiskey together. I play a Crimean Khanate and joke with my friends that I got nerfed because the most active player in the community doesn’t like playing against them, so he sent a DM on Facebook to the game’s developer asking them to nerf them. In Poland, there’s one (well, maybe two) guy who makes miniatures for the system and always creates unique ones for various events. I already have a ton of unique miniatures that I haven’t used yet—or probably never will. Missing an event thus gives me FOMO; I’m worried about how this FOMO might looks like for to people who don’t attend any events in Poland and missed tons of unique stuff.

Part 1/of however many

cont.
As I said, most of them are mental boomers. That’s why, unfortunately, the use of AI is rampant. On top of that, they can’t paint at all. Painting contests are based on selecting the “funniest” or “most interesting” entries in terms of the models, not the painting techniques. There's like only one dude in the entirely of the community who knows how to properly paint.
The most active player can't write without making basic spelling mistakes, yet he runs a the most-popular Facebook fanpage. Recently, he posted 3D-printed buildings for gaming terrains. The STL files were, of course, generated by another community member using AI and contain obvious errors.

The community’s schizophrenic nature stems precisely from the use of AI, but also simply from the absurdities and quirks of the people involved. I joke that to organize an event for by Fire and Sword, you first have to (or while doing so) develop a mental illness. The guy mentioned earlier, who can’t write properly, is organizing one event. The second event is being organized by a guy who lives in the Polish mountains, so his Facebook posts announcing the event and posting updates are in the gimmick of dialogues between one highlander and another. He writes his entire posts in psuedo-highlander dialect. It's barely readable. The third guy created this wonderful video, which has become an inside joke within my friend's group https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAkFdUHq8kY

A large number of people who play this game are also involved in historical reenactment, so they come dressed in period clothes.

The way players and game developers communicate is also funny. Since it’s assumed that everyone knows everyone else and has shared a shot of vodka with everyone at some point, the default assumption is that a customer can email the publisher directly if they need something. Until recently, there were no faction dice available for me (the Crimean Khanate). However, when I bought starter set, I mentioned that I’d like to also purchase the dice. They replied that I should attach a note with my order stating that I’d made a separate bank transfer for the dice, and they’d pack them up. A friend of mine needed a cannon for his Cossacks, which isn’t available for purchase yet. They just added it to his order at request. To get factions like Transylvania or Moldova, you have to email or message the store staff on Facebook.

That's exactly why my friends and I are surprised that anyone from abroad can play this wargame—because part of it is hidden behind the barrier of not having a direct connection with the creators.

A fan-made task force (Sameul Oskierko's) was released a year ago. It’s a great initiative, but to get the cards needed to play it and the miniatures (like the commander), you had to attend the event where it was released. To play it now, I don’t even know who to contact about it.

Overall, it's pure SOVL

I'm curious about Victrix's releases. I'm planning to buy some Carolingians, but hoping that when tbe cavalry come out, they'll also release a Carolingian Warband with a mix of tbe different frames. I just want a few of each, is my logic. Anyone know if they tend to do that quickly, or let the kits of 30+ of one type stay on sale for a while first before offering the warband?

How can I roleplay war battles alone all by myself? I was thinking that I wanna get into roleplaying, and what I would like would be making like maps with frontlines and make up squads (of fictional characters I like or smth) and make them do stuff, missions or battles, and if see who takes/loses territory

Things like, maybe clearing a small town or something. Idk. I just wanna have creative fun.

I'm open to use AI since I've been using it for erp sillytavern chatbots, but I also wanna use online maps to mark and colour stuff like frontlines. I recogn I could use AI image generation for my characters too, that would be cool.

You buy a SOLO WARGAME, you incredibly stupid fuck. There are hundreds of them across all genres and levels of combat. Some use minis, some are hex & chit, and some are video/computer based.

>People in my group want to play out a map campaign depicting 1066 in Britain

The death of Edward The Confessor will be our divergence point, but we'll probably develop into something radically different by the end of 1066. We'll use Pillage to play out small raids, unsure about whether we'll address big battles differently, and I'm probably gonna tweak Greathelm's map campaign system to handle the map itself.

Probably won't start till next year though.

Ottomans are currently the most overpowered faction in the game. They got some nerfs recently but probably more will come soon. But are fun to play as, not so much to play against - personally. Lots of option that are actually viable to choose between.

Personally I don't know anyone who plays in Gliwice or larger Katowice urban area, but probably plenty of players. There's a very active discord - sort of official forum for the system, also has a international channels - you should ask there

Martyrdom kickstarter launched. It's unsurprisingly bland. The rules look like they took Bolt Action and half-assed adapting it to rank and flank warfare.
