A bit of an odd request but does anyone have scans of Speedstream material? Sponsor cards and so son, thank in advance

>>98832147
>>98831107What makes it so freindship destroying.
Pledge just closedBought out of nostalgia but how's the actual game?
>>98832147Not particularly. Each player lays tiles in their own tableau. The main gimmick is that each player is dealt tiles that they put up for sale, and if no one wants to buy them the seller has to buy them at whatever price they listed.
I bought Paperback to play with my mother (she loved it) and 20 Strong for myself (on order)
>>98832502Sounds weirdly very american. Broker game in disguise.
>>98833040Paperback? Looks like you build a story?
This is Mark Steere, veteran game inventor and creator of the groundbreaking game Churn. Say something nice about him.
>>98833583You look like the sort of lad i can play Pax Porf with.
>>98833616Even if that was me, the only games he will ever play are his own. And he won't even play those sufficiently to know when to release them. A couple solo tests on a minimal board and out the door it goes.
>>98833583He looks Dutch.
>>98833583>Churn>19 cells>3 possible statesThis thing could easily be solved in a day
>>98833616What a weird name for a board game.
>>98835311>Look what game it is. >Get rule instructions>Pic related shows upThat game looks too complicated.
>>98835323Thats a videogame as boardgame!
>>98835327
>>98835330
>>98835323>>98835327>>98835330>>98835334well yeah, you did choose to look at the digital adaptation of a game, instead of the game itself. of course it looks complicated, especially with trying to shove all the different info into one small box, when in the board game it's all over the place (and rightfully so)
It's cute watching a dude get filtered by a pax in real time.
Requesting pics with funny/interesting lines from rulebooks, I lost mine.
>>98835680Can't really remember ever reading anything funny, other than Vladaa deliberately naming things wrong for the lulz in Galaxy Trucker. And maybe Eklunds footnotes about poor, unjustly maligned renaissance bankers
>>98835680All I got are Chudyk threats and Eklund glazing CO2
>>98830334>What game destroyed your friendship the most?Legitimately have never had this happen or even seen it in decades of playing games. >comfort game Web of Power. One of the first eurogames I played when it came out, made everything click. >DLSKingmaker. Too many bits and pieces, too much set up. Takes forever. Janky as fuck. Love it anyway and its weird round chits I can't even get on a magnet board.
>hear oracle of delphi is a severely underrated feld>Get it>It's okay, although it's pretty cool how turns are structured to be super quick>Sell it>See it on bga a year later>Try it again>It's super funWtf why. Not like there was a hidden facette of the game that was revealed to me. And neither was the mental calculation of where to go so hard I am particularly thankful for the digital indicators. It's weird. Maybe it's just one of the game that works well digitally because you can get everything in at a glance
>>98836201digitally it works easierr because you don't need to do seven kinds of randomization for the map setup, so the boring time spent not playing the game doesn't smear the fun time spent playing the game.
Lads, I might have only played it multihanded but Railways of the lost atlas seems VERY good. Idk if it's just because it's my first real contact with 18xx and I happen to like the system or if it's just a great introduction.Of course this was the ONE time I practiced restraint and didn't get the expansion because half of it seemed a bit like trash; the landmarks and minors seem VERY cool but the rest...ehhh
>>98835680I got some.
>>98835680
>>98836656Wait this seems familiar. Is that the extraordinariy adventures of baron munchhausen?
>>98836666Yup
>>98836627yeah the Metropolitain might seem meh but the map can feel very open since most mergers get only 2 stations beyond their homes, and in the standard long game there's 3 capital cities you wanna reserve a seat in, so you don't have much tokenage left for blocking any other chokepoints, but the Met does. and it also blocks capitals when they're built so no more cheeky track building thru a capital to connect for a merger. sure it's a bit deep in the weeds type thing, but that's why it is in the expansion and not the base game.and Events are cool too. make the game more party-like, with each round having its own theme, like every company secretly being 40$ poorer because CEOs Get Rich lets presidents pay 20 to their own pockets from company money, or Ghost Towns Razed completely changing how one route works because someone (me) upgraded a < city into a )( track, which fucks up everyone( else')s paths to the distant destination with the big payouts. but also Events are the easiest to just print and play, so if you're gonna get the expansion, get it for Landmarks and New Companies, and enjoy the Events as a nice bonus on the side.
I really like session reports in which you can tell the guy writing it had a genuinely great time with the gameSo give me session reports of the last game you really liked, I guess
>>98835371But i understand that this has the same mechanics? Thats alot of micromanagement.
>>98833514that's the single-player only spinoff called Paperback Adventures which is their attempt at a roguelite. Not played that one, I got Paperback 10th Anniversary Edition. It's basically Dominion but with letters, I dig it and it's one of the few relatively complex games i got my mother playing (relative to our usual boggle and bananagrams). I would like to play the Adventures one eventually, looks cool but there's also a single player mode in the traditional version of the game that seems well implemented just looking at the rules and components.
You knowSPACE KINGis actually a board game, not a wargame or ttrpg.
Anyone here played the EVE Online board game? How does it compare to other 4Xs like TI4 or Eclipse? There's a copy with most of the expansions at my LGS and I want to CONSOOM
Yeah
Posting here as well. What are some other good deck building game that supports 4 players Legendary Marvel Deck Building and it's expansios? It's just so easy to get to the table and my group and I can't get enough. I fear we're going to wear it out with too many consecutive games, so I'm looking for alternative games that are either deck building/card games or cooperative and aren't too mentally draining (we have Spirit Island for that). Also I fucking hate minis or I would've picked up something like Death may Die.

>>98838936>feel like a kid opening up his christmas presentI genuinely think we all have to be careful and monitor how much we like getting a box of new toys vs how much we like the actual game
My big tiddy gf keeps knocking the pieces off her tableau and then putting them back in ways that are advantageous to her. Fml.
>>98837044i wouldn't call it micromanagement, more tracking info, as half of those pictures explain the menus and displays the digital edition has but that you dont get in the physical game. the actual gameplay is simple, you either play a card, which depends on what kind of card it is, buy a card from the market, put a reservation on a card so that if someone buys it they pay you and not the bank, or use a card already in your tableau which again depends on what kind of card it is and what you're doing with it (expanding business, moving troops, flipping your character to get 1 prestige at the cost of 2 income cubes, etc.). do 3 things a turn (but playing or buying [i forgor] a second card per turn costs 2 actions instead of one, to keep parity with other Pax games) and try to get the win via collecting prestige points and buying a Topple card in the prestige color you have the majority of.
>>98839162Buy a lower table maybe?
>>98837060Oh, ok. The Paperback Adventures look more engaging. And the normal (first/original) version seems more like Scrabble, at least from the box text and pics i could find.
>>98839738
>>98839741And this are special genre cards? Like UNO reverse cards they give you boni or multiplicators?
>>98839746Dont know what edition this is. But i will post it. Paperback-Anon might know it.
>>98838936>>98839031The backlog is real. Question is fun to play and how many times you actual play the game.
>>98839698>dont call it micromanagement>start a big list with the rules and many options to gain pointsThat sounds alot like micromanagement, even if it just what and how many actions you can gain winning points/income cubes. But ok, it seems very much self explaining, so it might not be that hard to play, just keeping track of points.
>>98839738i mean yeah its scrabble the deckbuilding game. thats why it's fun.>>98839746they're just the victory points and wildcard letter cards. all the other normal letters also give you cash for using them in a word.
>>98839031>>98839765not like I have anything else to playgroup only has catan and root right now, some occasional mahjong too
>>98839162I do this with my cock sometimes by accident
>>98839162Maybe teach her a lession and knock her up as wellAlso why are the boards so near her tableend
>>98839899>Collection is Catan, Root, Majhong and Mage KnightI think even minimalistfags would be confused
>>98833040>20 StrongWhich edition did you get? I want to get into this but you need the core set, the first one is well out of print and hard to find even second hand. The new one they are launching is apparently the shittest deck they've made. Tanglewoods Red is apparently the best one and the core set is here and there on ebay but it's meant to be really hard and not a good intro to the game.
>>98840059I keep saying Root is only good for people new to the hobby and keep being proven right.
>>98840244Maybe that's why Target stocks it.
>>98840244I found it harder than average to wrap my mind around certain mechanics (like ownership of clearings and accompanying movement rules) and there's a LOT of them in the basegame alone. You might argue I've been approaching it with certain assumptions how things work and wehrle likes to do things differently, which is definitely true... But I can't imagine people new to boardgaming being anything other than confused about the game and dynamics between the factions. Doesn't help the rulebook isn't particularly good (sans the example of play)
>>98839795Interesting game.
Thoughts on Nature + Climate?
>>98841053Nature is just Evolution with slightly less sauce, and Climate is an expansion for Evolution, not for Nature, so "how are you combining the two?" is my main thought.
>>98841053Low test version of Evolution Climate.
>>98840244Root is basically Catan for furfags
Are Canadians to blame for games being so anti-competitive these days? I know the euroslop thing goes back to post Ww2 Germany, but Canada was on the winning side and shouldn't have any hangups about smashing your friend and then smashing his sister.
>>98842186
>>98842006Weigh in on Borderlands.
>>98842186In what way are games supposed to be less competitive now? Or is this just some kind of nostalgic longing for parker era trash games? If it's the latter, I believe the lack of player eliminiation and similar concepts in modern games is less a turn to pacifism and more just gameplay evolving
>>98842006>Root is basically Catan for degeneratesFtfy
>>98842826I'm pretty sure wingspan only exists because of canada
>>98830334A game of Diplomacy is pretty contentious, but wait until you've played a game where you try to collective steer an enterprise with the same people you're competeing against. I'm not really aware of another game where spiting the other players and trying to ruin the game for everyone else is a viable and encouraged game strategy.
>>98842835>implying Catan isn't for degenerates Do you Catan motherfucker?
>>98843380If you Catan, which is what you're implying by your question, then you know what you must do, the noose awaits.
>>98843171>I'm not really aware of another game where spiting the other players and trying to ruin the game for everyoneMy man, ya gotta try Stationfall.
What's wrong with Catan?
>>98842186Central Canadian games are passive aggressive. Its different and sucks a lot to be around but that's the goal, make it suck to be around so much your opponent leaves and you win by default. West coast games are about showing how chill you are to as many people as possible and declaring yourself the best person which is even better than being the winner. East coast Canadian games get rowdy but mostly about talking funny as fast as possible and if there's any rough housing its no biggie.
>>98843651The balance is hurr durr, but trading. You have no ability to mitigate luck otherwise and it's one of those games where people feel like they're a genius for auto playing and blame losing on the other players not trading. Normies think they're rocking the averages picking 8s and 6s but there really aren't enough dice rolls to make a difference. It's popular, but then again so is monopoly.Compare to Castles of Burgundy where you invest in the ability to mitigate rolls and actually get points for strategic decisions, or Space Base where you actually care what slop other people roll.
>playing Twilight Struggle as Ruskies>holding CIA created with defcon at 3>hmmm nows a safe time to get rid of it!>play on T1, AR3 and before even letting the event resolve, Coup Iran to get something out of it>couped Iran to get something out of it>aw fuckAnd that is how we had our shortest ever game. A note to maybe wake up a bit before starting the session. But its okay we played two more games afterwards, both went to late war, and we split the Ws. Its nice how frequently we get to Late War these days, and those "long" matches dont even surpass the 120 minute mark anymore.
>>98843672But what about french canada?
I love boardgames so much brosThough I am kind of afraid that would I have the time and opportunity to play every single day my enthusiasm might fade. Not that this is a realistic scenario, but the question if scarcity of playtime is the driving factor of bg enthusiasm is interesting
Tried to introduce HF4A yesterday to two new guys. One of them was kind of into it but confused about what to do (understandably), and the other bounced off so completely we had to stop the game after a couple of hours. It's starting to get to the point where half my games some people really love and want to play, and some really hate and veto them.
>>98843651The game is mostly determined by the setup at the beginning. It plays itself after that.
I've been away from this hobby for a couple of years. What gems did I miss?>>98844728Experience taught me that if you're friends are not already boardgamers, it's not worth it. I tried to introduce my group to new games for a long time. Their heart wasn't into it. Fortunately I played almost all of my games at least once, but I never managed to get A Feast for Odin and Race for the Galaxy on a physical table. You're better off looking for a local game club or people who are already into the hobby.
>>98843739>stalin vs martiansWHAT YEAR IS IT?
>>98844728you've been chosen by the grogforceyou are ~15% down the path towards owning a dim, dank, dusty streetcorner game shop full of pre-3d printing hobby models and warhammer stuff that nobody ever wanted and a few of those tables, THOSE tables you know the ones
>>98840297It's a board game about cute animals killing each other. It probably has a higher bounce ratio than other, more accessible games, but at the end of the day, it's a board game, and not everyone who buys board games has an IQ of 80 or lower. If anything, despite being a bad game it probably does the hobby a service by introducing people to heavier games and disassociating the hobby from being retarded kiddy shit. But whatever. What I meant is people new to the hobby don't have a frame of reference to understand that the game is shit. It is great when all you have to compare it to are Risk and Catan.
>>98843651You can lose on placement and how the dice rolls. If the game is close the one winning is the one that manages to gaslight the rest of the table the best which usually mean you have to non stop complaining about other trying to get the table to slow down him which is going to piss him off immensely
>>98832423I used to help do IT work for our church's priest when I was a teen, and once he showed me this, his only game on the computer. He had me play a game, and I'll never forget him laughing at me when I lost my first round and my leader got beheaded.

>>98843744Still central Canada. Same methods and victory condition with a dash of west coast pretentious for that special je ne sais fuck.
Who would win in an aura battle between Tom Vasel and Rodney Smith?
>>98844963Nah, we all game regularly for almost 10 years now. For some games it's pretty clearly a matter of brainletism. One guy for example couldn't get a win in Dune maybe ever (at minimum in 11 logged games, but probably 20 in total) and started vetoing it.The HF4A guy in question is actually a master of Dune but has some kind of selective brainletism over some games. Sucks hard at and hates Eclipse, but likes FCM.Another guy has a severe preference against "pacifist" games where you can't kill each other, but is also the biggest HF4A hype fiend.
>>98845056Rents so bad its nice to have a place to stay.
>>98845075Rodney's smile alone would yeet Tom's fat ass into orbit.>>988449711947 apparently. >>98841053Just play Evolution: Climate.

>>98843171I looked it up, that sounds like your tv-show of a rich family.
>>98840086got Tanglewoods Red. The extra decks are kinda cheap so I'll probably snag more if i'm into it
>>98840297>being anything other than confused about the game and dynamics between the factionshow is this possible when your actions are literally scripted in the rulebook? you don't even need to understand, just follow the faction script like a bot and you're doing ROOT.>>98841053Base and Climate are both mid with my group as everyone strives for balance and the games are boring af. I don't know what nature does.
>>98845075Vasel, Rodney is just too nice.
>>98845168this table understands wingspan is all about the eggs
>>98845714Nature is a brand new game from the same publisher that takes evolution and pares things down while making the game less lethal and more modular.
Never played Root, why is everybody hating the game? I'm getting The Castles of Burgundy in a little while.
Has anyone checked out Warhammer Quest ACG? Thinking of picking up a used copy for my group, but not sure how much content is available since there were never any expansions
>>98845845no but as a rule ffg licensed games workslop are much better than you might expect
>>98845763>Never played Root, why is everybody hating the game? It's a long, heavy, asymmetric wargame. It has plenty of fans, but not everyone is in that niche.
>>98845763only 2/3rd of us hate root and for me it's because it's scripted and one player not doing as they are supposed to basically opens the game for another player to run away with the whole thing. some of the factions are legit bad and even the 1/3 who love root admit that it's only without them.
>>98845723>less lethalso more mid, that's ass bro. evolution: the beginning is the only good game in that series if you're right about nature. the beginning is easy, small footprint, meanwhile it's brutal and has high player interaction.

>>98845075Rodney has god tier aura
>>98845763Vagrant
>>98845913>It's a long, heavy, asymmetric wargame. No, that's pure preference, and it sounds like something I would love. People hate it because it is badly designed and the optimal play style is Catan-level degeneracy.
Reminder: if your criticism of root is about the metagaming (or mechanical lack thereof) or vagabond interaction, remember that Wehrle officially posted that he's playing root without planning and conspiring against each other, meaning the balance problems are just unapologetically shit design
So, they're printing a new edition of arkham horror, is the game worth it?
Hey anons, does anyone know if the Unmatche: The Witcher pair of games make for an enjoyable set? Or do they require other sets to really get your money's worth?
>>98836902Had a crazy Modern Art game in which one player exploited an edge case rule that has never come up before. Basically he played a double auction card without pairing it with a second card. This was the fourth card of a single colour, so we could ether let him get his own painting for free or someone had to play a card of the matching colour causing the end of the round. Absolute madman.
>>98843618Good job on missing the point retard.
>>98845722Until you realize that it's really only your last 3 actions that should fill up your egg slots then you realize it's about feathers, which is about your draw (and tuck) engine. And also the Oceania board is better.
If we discovered aliens on a planet a few light-years away and fired a rocket towards them, what games would you send them? Assume Roscosmos gives you 10 units of space, and that the aliens can understand any properly written rulebook.Large box = 3 unitsRegular box = 2 unitsSmall box = 1 unitFor me, I'd go with...Tigris and Euphrates (2)Hansa Teutonica (2)Innovation (1)Container (2)Legendary Aliens (3)

>>98848381hey now, not all russians are putler supporters. Some of us are as much train and space autists as americans are! I'm still wishing for a 1861 translated print, sure it's not the best for getting the friends and family into the 18XX system but it's about homeland, familiar city names might make it more bearable than unknown yankee cities and unknown nip cities.
>>98848435>lgbtp material to enlighten our alien neighbors>No room for boardgamesGay MonopolyMolly Houseuhhhhh whats the name of that one where the gays fight against The Man i forgetplenty of boardgames, it's just the quality is dubious.
>>98848557My apologies then.To answer the question, assuming we can somehow manage to have clear communication (as in: I don't have to go for specifically rules light games) and they at least roughly resemble us and our forms of communication... I'd still probably choose mostly abstracts, thematic implementation is likely lost on them. Ideally something that represents human interests and desires in a positive way and not perpetual war and conflict. Which is awkward because I just realized all competitive games I can think of represent some sort of conflict. On the other hand, conflict does represent our species rather well. I'mm have to think about it a bit>>98848564Stonesomething uprising? Stonewall? I seem to remember something like that because of the AIDS death track

>>98838936Best autistic fiddlybits solo game out there. The worst thing about Mage Knight is there isn't more Mage Knight.
how the fuck do I find a new group, I'm sick to death of flakers and both of the groups I was in this year died out before I could play anything good. Also I find it amusing how they wanted to switch the days we met because "tuesday is too hard" just for the group to fade out as soon as we stopped doing tuesdays.
>>98849235There used to be a tripfag here who would frequent gay bars to find other faggots to play abstracts with. Seemed to be a successful strategy for him.
After trying Forest Shuffle : Smoky Mountains, I think it is an improvement over the OG. But my friends, despite having originally complained about clearly superior strats in FS, were very lukewarm on it.I enjoyed the river mechanism and how each archetype now has a rather potent payoff card. I also liked seeing trees from OG get remixed into slightly better cards , like Silver Maple being a better Beach, or butterflies being redone as the squirrel subtype meaning you can now have cards the go left/right/under instead of only on the treetops.Any anons here have thoughts or critiques?
Tiles or boards for a dungeon crawler?
>>98849470Simply better. I've played it a million times on bga now. The og i did not care for
>>98849230I love playing Mage Knight with other people, but the downtime in between turns can suck if you have a guy trying to optimize his turn to the utmost.
>>98849582if I were designing a dungeon crawler rn I would take cribs from jeremy white designs. his designs are more naval and aviation wargame stuff but come much closer to the level of elegance and complexity necessary to a dungeon crawler than, say, descent without getting too fiddly
>>98848859The payload would be boardgames, not a warhead. And obviously the craft AI would perform a re-entry maneuver, not crash into it.

>>98849962There was a very interesting horror(?) one, "Alone" or something similar in which the dungeon is only ever a few tiles in each direction and the ones further away are taken off at the end of the round, so retracing is only possible via memory. It was actually fun.
>>98850805No, it couldn't.

>>98849235I've heard people say one needs to find boardgamers, not turn people into boardgamers. I think it's the other way around, the ideal path is to start with friends and turn them into boardgamers.Failing that I suppose you might consider follow other anons advise. I've found a bunch of people asking if I want to play with their group when I was buying/selling used boardgames, but I've always been too cowardly for that. I've got my group and precious little time, I've never wanted to risk a free day for a random group that might be really pleasant or absolutely terrible.
>>98849235You were supposed to make about 3 or 4 of them by now.
>all my friends like AcquireBoomer gaming supremacy
>>98847520That's actually a very useful rule that most people overlook, would call it a smart play rather than a madman play. You can also use the double auction to force pump your artist of choice. I do it all the time.
>>98852182Oh and it also skips the turn of the subsequent player(s) since they either have to do the double or pass.
>>98849235Unfortunately, if the following do not exist, you must do the groundwork yourself and find people you want to play with:>a board game store/cafe that already does weekly events>something on Meetup/Aftergame (no one uses Aftergame even though it's better)>a local FB groupI moved to Pensacola, and the only real board game store got vaporized by the hurricane the day before I arrived. Luckily my coworkers apparently play boardgames, so I will attempt something this Tuesday and see if it works out. If not, I'm in the same boat. It's hell, I went from what is practically boardgame paradise to a barren wasteland.
Why is there no gulag entry for Mario Party Advance?
Why hasn't the government sent me a boardgame waifu yet? They see me posting in bgg, seems like the polite thing to do would be to send me a (medium tiddy) gf. Have there been any budget cuts that could be delaying things?

I've been waiting for mine for like 14 years, had to settle a regular wife in the meantime. Can't recommend that either, they don't even come with a manual and you have to figure out all the rules yourself.

>>98852213>Aftergame (no one uses Aftergame even though it's better)jesus christ anon this is fucking bullshit, the only physical meetup I could find is 5,000 miles away in London, there's more verified life on mars. why the fuck would you recommend this?
>>98853703Because it's better than Meetup, even though no one uses it? Exactly what I said. Make a group yourself and point people to it (if you can even find anyone to play with lol, good luck).
I can't teach pax ren to my gf, now she knows the rule but she can't play it properly so I always steamroll. How do I fix this, got her good and start losing? It looks like she can't evaluate the market and how to asses and counter the main threats
>>98854034>playing a game about memorising all the potential card combinations>playing games with non-unicorn womenTry Jaipur or something.
>>98854034when playing ask her why she's doing things, like why did she buy that card over all the ones to its leftwhen you make a turn explain why you're doing it, like "there's two cards in the market that target the same province with the Conspiracy one-shot, and each is not enough to overtake, but with both I might be able to conquer it and own it, so I'll buy both, and that's my two actions per turn, your turn" or something like that.
>>98854055>playing a game about memorising all the potential card combinationsThis doesn't describe pax ren>playing games with non-unicorn womenShe cooks insanely well and she beats me at other games>>98854057The issue is the transition into the mid game, after the obvious opening 2 agents conspiracies, coronations and such leave the market she can't pressure me so I just end up with a dominating tableau or just out tempo too much depending on the market. And since the game is pretty opaque I feel like I can't really explain how to play other than presenting different trade offs like I already do
>>98830334Dippy is a great game. I just suck at it.
>>98851331I think the game was Lost Patrol. The goal was to get 5 scouts to an escape vehicle, through a jungle infested with genestealers.Supposedly a very difficult game.I never played it, but the concept was really cool.
>>98851718Maybe he was gay raped and got AIDS?
>>98854387>This doesn't describe pax renIt doesn't? All Pax Ren discussion seems to focus around>card X enables wincon Y so you should keep that in mind and counter it while setting your own win with card Z
>>98854510Due to the decks being highly random it's not like you can know which card is coming next so you have to focus on the 10 cards in the market and how they interact with the gamestate. You can't play for outs that might not show until the last turn of the game or not even be in the decks. Only thing you can keep track of are the comets because you know there are always 2 in the last 14 cards so if you want to see them you can buy+trade fair to advance twice the market
>>98854551I didn't say "predict the cards", I said "memorize". The fact that the deck is highly random makes this worse if the cards are high impact. So I don't think you're making the point you think you're making.>focus on the 10 cardsWhile keeping in mind what is potentially coming in the next market, or no?
>>98854580>While keeping in mind what is potentially coming in the next market, or no?mostly no, because it can be basically anything, there's so many cards in the game, and so few of them are used each match, I find it strategically better to just deal with what I see and adjust the strategy when new info is revealed, not preparing for the unknown only to be fucked over because of the however many HRE conspiracy cards the game has the deck we got had 0.
>>98854580You can't predict the cards, the only advantage you get by knowing all the cards are the distributions, so if you see 2 jihads in the east you know how likely getting a third one is. But it's kinda pointless because there might be 0 left in the deck and lot of cards are so high impact you can't afford to also care for what could or could not come up next
>>98854598>>98854628I'll take your word for it. What is it then? The board state is super complex and you can get fucked in a million different ways aside from the cards? Just checked out the weight for Pax Ren and it looks pretty extreme. Whereas I see anons here talking about it being much lighter and taking 30 minutes.
Expected a reskin of ImperiumIt's Imperium with actually interesting cards that can combo with each other and have multiple abilities each to choose from
I've not played it in a hot minute, but I do think Pax Ren is kind of the perfect boardgame. It is very deep, endlessly variable yet short enough to make heavily onesided games less of an issue and it das a deceptively low footprint.(If you let go of the map and just use cards that is). It's not my favourite game, but there really is nothing quite like it.
>>98855106Have you played any other Pax games? While pax ren is my favorite, the others are nothing to scoff at either.
>>98854861The gamestate is very opaque, win conditions are razor thin (someone buying the right card might go from not close at all to being able to declare victory next turn) you can interact and attack your opponent in many ways, some very creatives The games can be very short because if someone buy the wrong card early is already over T1 if the opponent can buy some powerful cardSome lines can be hard to spot for a beginner, for example yesterday my victory vs my gf involved a vote on the ottos I used to put back hungary (their vassal) on the throne to get it back in the same turn with a peasant revolt I won thanks to the extra pawn I placed after the vote so I could vote again vs hungary in the next turn (vassals can't be targeted by votes) and get the extra law prestige on its republic sideThere are also many rules and symbols you need to internalise because without knowing them you don't understand how the cards interact
>heavyweight autism
>>98855145Didn't enjoy Pax Ren nearly as much, H+ is foreverunavailable. But I've been eyeing porf for a while now. Kinda wish it'd get the Pax ren 2e treatment of cleaning up the card design
>>98855188You don't know about the Ultimate Edition?
>>98855161This sounds very much like a series of increasingly complex fool's mates.
>>98855187Literally me
>>98854034recite the rules and optimal movements during sexual intercourse in a whispering tone to her ear
>>98855195Well shitI did not
>>98855216In what way? A pax ren fool's mate would be something like spending 5 money on a useless east card while leaving a 1 cost grim open
>>98854412normally when you get gay raped they give you the anti-hiv emergency drugs to prevent you from getting aids
>>98855217>expectations >>98855187>reality
>>98855457A fool's mate happens because the noob can't read the board in Chess.
>>98855909The fool's mate is white not knowing how to open and suiciding. Using your definition every mate in chess is also an increasingly complex fool's mate
>>98857041Chess has been increasingly mostly about memorisarion since at least the 70s.
>>98857064So? Blundering a pawn resulting in a losing endgame isn't the same as losing because you suicided at the start
>Pax RenWould love to play more online but firing this up on bga is just waste of time. The only ones playing are absolute sweatlords with 10000 elo that steamroll you or if you magically match against a newbie it is a smurf account. >player xy is playing for the first time so we gave him double the turn time>he pressured every single concession and is up 5 gold and 2 crowns two turns in with plenty of time to spareYeah sure buddy. Whatever.
>>98857116I guess I'll have to try it on BGA to know what the fuck I'm talking about.
>>98857208Yeah that is a problem. I played a lot of it when it came out but have barely ever gone back to it on bga just because I feel like a deer in headlights. I don't think I'm a bad player, but I feel like my opponents regularly are thinking 3-4 turns further ahead than me. Matching that would require mental effort I'm not that willing to spend in a digital game against randos, probably would in physical space though
>>98830334Diplomacy is still the only board game I've played that's prompted more than three people to tell me they were going to spit on my grave.

>>98858332FFG is too cheap now to pay the license they've had for decades so they're going in and replacing any non-lovecraft old ones they can with their OCs. Ithaqua is from a Derleth story originally.
>>98858396so.. Moby Dick?
>>98858396Faggots can write good cosmic horror, it's just modern identity politics that are the problem.

>>98858418I don't believe so anon>>98858421Oh, 'faggot' in the old sense. Not necessarily homosexuals, just people being fags.
Where can I get a large rectangular neoprene mat for cheap? Temu and AliExpress seem to only have tiny mahjong mats.
>>98858269nevermind thatWe are living in a timeline where>FFG is so creatively bankrupt they're remastering games>They're allowed to change the source material however they see fit>They are allowed to Kickstart this remaster>While being owned by a billion-dollar publishing company>People will pay for thisMAKE IT MAKE SENSE
>>98858876and I forgot>FFG had already reused artwork from this game for other games, even before they "remastered" it
they are ACTUALLY creatively bankrupt, now. their best designers built their own company, FFG hired literal podcasters to replace them.
>>98858876I don't think ALL the fault lies at FFG, Asmodee surely had a hand in them becoming an IP slop factory. Lovecraft has been the target of progressive types for some time, no idea why they flock to it yet want it to be something different. There's no excuse for using k*kestarter as retail though. I mean, hype machine, I get it, but buyers are effectively paying extra to subsidize that fucking platform for no reason
Should I sleeve my cards?
>>98858988You can buy a box of penny sleeves for $5 from Temu, literally no reason not to. Everyone thinks it's unnecessary until someone spills a drink at the table.
>>98858988No. Literally no reason to do so. The moment someone spills a drink it gets into the sleeves anyway. Might as well play as god intended and not haptically cuck yourself
>>98858988Sure, it makes the worst part of boardgaming better: shuffling
>>98858992Nickel sleeves.
>>98859568If you don't have hand problems like some people ITT do, learn to handle cards. Doesn't take a lot of time for bssic stuff. It's actually fun to riffle shuffle, especially if one guy at the table is actually a poker buff and for some reason can't.
>>98859016Have fun finding someone who cleans their hands before playing. Even less when it's time to shuffle them depending on the quality of the cards.
>>98859723This point always confuses me. Who the hell has sticky/dirty/wet hands when they play boardgames?>Muh skin oilsNever been a problem in 2 decades, never will be. If anything, sleeved cards tend to stick together far easier.Only point I will accept is games with starting cards where you have to shuffle a lot, eg. DUNC imp
>>98859831I played 7 wonders with a random chick who was so sweaty handed the cards came damp from 2 seats away. My dick still gets hard over her touching my unsleeved cards.
anon...that wasn't sweat
>>98858876Arkham Horror 2e is a cult classic and the expansions have been stuck at inflated ebay prices for many many years. A limited reprint for the people that don't have the game already actually makes sense.

That can't be healthy.>>98859723>>98860701>>98859831>>98859723I think the problem is less different anons being either very pedantic or very sloppy about preserving their game components but how the people playing with them behave. I don't sleeve games that don't get shuffled at least as much as dominion, but I suppose if people ate greasy stuff and spread them across my games, I'd be more pedantic as well. The question really is if the people you are playing with behave like civilised people or not

>>98862896Yeah that seems incredibly weak but honestly almost exactly what you'd expect from gmt. Not the AI art though, that's a bit uncharacteristic
>>98862896I wonder how much a single illustration by a proper half-decent artist costs, I'll need at least a couple of hundred for my project.
>>98862916FFG really struck gold when they became able to just use any marvel comic book as art for their game
>>98862916Card sized illustrations are somewhere around 50-200 euros a pop, ofc depending on who you are asking to draw what, there's no upper limit. I can very much understand how you'd try to replace artists with AI art purely for the cost factor tbqh.
>>98862938Honestly expected the costs to be higher. So, without being too scroungy, 40k euros could result in enough illustrations to fill several decks of cards and some bigger illustrations. Unless you're Smegmaier or Wehrle the print runs are probably generally small enough where these sorts of budgets really bite though.
it's so close, i can almost taste victory, less than 2 months left
>>98863007you were gonna give up
>>98862984there are other ways to cut costs, look at space explorers. they showed 4 pieces of card art, really fucking kino 70s space race art and then when the kickstarter came out those 4 pieces were just zoomed to different levels for the card faces.also in theory you're not just paying for art, you're paying for someone who knows what the fuck they're doing, at least in theory. print art used to be it's whole own thing with CYMK and dpi considerations but I guess now everybody just shoves 4k down the clip and hopes for the best.

Decided to give LOTR: JiME a spin and bought it used with the dark paths addon. Played the first two missions of the main campaign with my gf and I don't think I have ever been so disappointed by a boardgame. I should have looked more into it, the character customisation is laughable and being stuck with the same 3 pieces of gear that just automatically upgrade as you progress really bums me.On the other hand we finally gave the white castle a spin and I really enjoy it.

My wife and I taught a friend TGZ and it was fantastic. He won going No-God and on tie breaks.I tried selecting Gu and forcing tier 2 craftsmen, but the utter lack of economy dev and some really misguided bidding (turns out said friend does not like fighting for turn order and left me holding the bag twice) left me too poor to compete with them.
