Magic the Gathering thread focused on in-universe content. No positive or neutral posting about UB content.

    >how do I search for non-UB cards?
    On Scryfall "-is:ub"
On EDHREC selecting "Universes Beyond" under Filters hides them.

    >Can I play UB cards even if I hate them?
You can do whatever you want, but you shouldn't contribute to the enshittification of this game. More people taking a stance against UB means WotC are more likepy to notice the dislike for it.
Proxy them if you must (ideally as in-universe characters), or wait for them to get in-universe reprints as a few already have.

No, I detail a bit more in the follow-up reply posts. Myrkul is elfball made with just cards I already owned. The idea is that elfball dies to boardwipes, so let's make it not do that, and also that elfball is ridiculous not matter what you out in it, so I'll just limit the deck to the cards I own. The land base is hot trash.

I do, but nothing recent as I don't play that often, and I focus more on my deck doing its thing than winning. The last time we played both games were greuling. First was just our four dragins decks battling it out, all of which are slow and nobody wanted to attack for a good long while, health pools dwindled though and eventually someone won with that hellkite that creates 6/6s and pings. I was pretty behind cause all my shit kept being removed despite going the slowest of everyone, but I had removal in hand and shouod have used it. Forgot about the ping etb damage, just thinking about how many creatures he had.
The second greuling game was 1 hard control deck, 1 control and mill deck, 1 control and artifact deck, and my bracket 1 esper fun things pile. I was literally the only one who dealt any damage all game, and only 4 to each player. My commander was removed 3 or 4 times despite being frankly no threat to anyone.
    >>
    >>98829954
Oh, forgot the actual TQ answer. It would have been the time before that, a few months ago, winning one game out of 3, but would have won 2 if I didn't completely forget my commander had totem armor. Would have turned a complete boardwipe on my side into 1 aura gone.

    >>
    >>98858963
Are they? I thought black/swamp mana was associated with evil or just sociopathy from almost the start of mtg? Or am I wrong?
    >>
    >>98862856
Color is supposed to be independent of morality. Black is more associated with evil because it's the color of power at a cost, and often the cost is other people, but not always.
You can look at the various animals from Bloomburrow for a recent example. Rats Lizards Bats and Squirrels all have black. In each case there is necromancy, lifedrain, mindcontrol, harsh environments and so on, but all animals are strictly speaking "good guys" who work together to fight off the calamity beasts, they just have different methods.

An older example is golgari elves, which have black because it's about the cycle of life death and rebirth, and giving up your body to the land so new things can be born of it even if those new things aren't pretty

Really it comes down to WotC just being lazy and flanderizing it. The last time other colors had villains anyone gave a fuck about was the phyrexians. That's where they toyed with the extreme of each color becoming oppressive. You don't want unyielding law and order, you don't want progress for the sake of progress, you don't want endless wilderness etc
Bloomburrow almost did this, with the idea that calamity beasts represent seasons or natural disasters taken to the extreme, so while Beeza is monowhite and representative of Spring, it actually being Spring all the fucking time would be awful because there is no harvest. But of course that's post set-blocks so you pretty much get no sense of that being what they were going for at all unless you read the lore.

But (may allah forgive me for uttering these words) if you look at any UB set *spits* without fucking fail the villain of the setting is monoblack, rakdos, or grixis. I don't even think it makes sense, the Fire Nation in Avatar is literally a fucking empire, they would have every reason to have white, but Zuko only gets mardu for his cards where he's redeemed. Why the fuck Azula has blue I'll never know. She isn't a very curious or inventive person. It's all a joke
    >>
most powerful card ever printed in magic, change my mind
    >>
    >>98863519
Lotus is very close, I'd think. Uncucked Lurrus was also a contender, especially with the power of Lotus.
Recall is nuts busted and can basically only ever get MORE nuts busted, because it's power is dependent on how powerful the other cards in your deck are, and that power only ever goes up. Lotus is somewhat similar in this regard because it actually lets you play those powerful cards and it gets better the more powerful they become, but you can still play through something powered out by lotus. A vintage game is often decided the moment an ancestral resolves.
Tinker should also be up there, as a resolved tinker should also win the game but in a much more flashy way.
    >>
    >>98863519
On the sheerest principle that Black Lotus can go into any deck and essentially any board state and make it superior, it automatically takes the crown.
Ancestral Recall is strong, yes. But there are plenty of situations where three more cards don't help you, or you don't have blue mana.
"But there are plenty of situations where more mana doesn't help you!" Fewer. Exceedingly fewer. Mana is the lifeblood of MtG. Mana makes everything happen. The game operates on mana. More mana means a lot more than more cards, especially since mana can become cards very easily by means of things not as powerful as Ancestral Recall, but free mana effects like Lotus are vanishingly rare.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I would have tolerated it had they shown any semblance of restraint. Like I get LOTR(the Aragorn incident is another matter), avatar, heck even 40k and final fantasy. But then starting with walking dead and immediately (speaking from set timescale) going to TMNT, spiderman, star trek in hopes of striking everything to max the cash out made me hate the whole thing
    >>

Same, except I was dumbfounded they went with 40k instead of Fantasy. I did not accept that.

And the Aragorn incident is another 33% of why I doubt I'll ever buy another M:tG card. You could a new setting with powerful, influential black people and elevate them, but they made a mockery of it by stealing identity.

They have full latitude to make new settings where things are however they want them to be, but they instead decided that changing existing third-party settings to appeal to politics was somehow the right move.
Like, it's well known that fiction purists will get up in arms if you don't respect the source material, what exactly did they think would happen when they changed major details of existing stories for political points?

It was fine as a Commander thing, commander is basically custom cards already. It replacing real Magic sets is where the problem arose, for me. I do not want to show up to a competitive event and have to deal with Peter Parker, Web-Slinger equipping Buster Swords and swinging through because they cast He's Dead Jim on my Donatello, Does Machines.

Because their objective is not elevating black and african culture, but destroying white culture
Don't forget that, knowingly or not, this is part of the grand project of turning all of us into a mish mash of everything

    > At first, they came for the Commander format. I said nothing as I didn't play Commander anyways.

    >>98880512
I stopped using the term "white culture" (singular). I'm french canadian, and I can tell you there is at least 2 white cultures in my country. And neither look like the French's culture.

We're talking devil-enchanted canoe floating in the sky touching a church's cross and capsizing, sending its occupants to hell.

Can you build a nature/wood elf themed deck in Magic The Gathering that uses nature-themed creatures (rather than undead or demons or whatever-the-fuck), elves, fae beings and tree spirits?
    >>
    >>98880657
yeah? pretty easy too cos there are many different flavors and well supported archetypes like japanese nature spirits from kamigawa or bug like fae from lorwyn and just regular ass elves from every other set
    >>
    >>98880561
White culture is european culture, what connects most of them. Cultures of respect, civility, accountability, and trust.
    >>
    >>98880657
Lots of tribal support if that's what you want. Otherwise you can 100% just do themes of all sorts.
    >>

    >Because their objective is not elevating black and african culture, but destroying white culture
Alternatively, it's because bigwigs internally decided "diversity = good, ergo we'll get more sales by virtue signaling". And due to how marketing research has been coopted to reinforce existing management choices rather than inform them, any feedback suggesting the decision was wrong is scrubbed away long before it reaches their ivory towers.
    >>
    >>98880561
I understand the concern, but I don't think it's reductionist, "white culture" can mean "cultures that are from white people", not a single monolithic one, and as anon said >>98880767 you have some connecting themes, not only on concepts but historically too (pre-germanic sky father and all that)
    >>
    >>98880874
Yes I agree, what I'm trying to point out is that is the mechanism of it, even if they are not aware, the release of the memetic agent "diversity is our strength" is part of the plan

The poor design and made for commander cards pushed me away, UB was the nail in the coffin for me.
I'm not an oldhead by any means. Started playing in M15 mostly with draft and pauper. I liked EDH too. Somewhere around after DOM the game started to feel like it was moving in a definitively bad direction thematically and mechanically. I lost touch with the game when I went to college but occasionally played commander whenever I went home for the holidays. my friends kept up with the release schedule and every holiday I came back the EDH decks kept getting sillier and sillier with bloated board states and cards that had walls of text. By the time I graduated and tried to get back into the game it was completely different.
All that to say, I guess I know how the oldheads who were always banging the drum of "magic has been shit since tenth edition!!!" feel now.

    >You could a new setting with powerful, influential black people and elevate them,
Just saying, they do this, and chuds still complain about nogs being all over their cards. But I'm not in favor of them blackwashing characters that were already white.
    >>
    >>98881178
Which ones? Taking European inspired settings and blackwashing them doesn't count. I hardly see anyone, even the chuddests, complaining there are black people in Amonketh
    >>
Does the MTG yuri manga count as UB or own ip?
    >>
    >>98881178
The only african planes are Amonket and Zalphir, the latter of which doesn't have its own set.
I really don't hear much about blacks on cards. I hear a great deal more about ugly characters on cards, some of which are black.
    >>

That effect isn't the same as fight.
But yes, it was before fight as a keyword (not as a concept). Fight as a keyword debuted in 2011 wirh innistrad.
Fight as a concept debuted in 1997 in Visions.

I'm fucking aware, otherwise I wouldn't have commented on it.
If it was the same as fight, why the fuck would I ask if fight had been invented yet? The fucking fight text would be proof that fight had been fucking invented because I'd be looking at it. The entire point was that it's not the same text as fucking fight.
Fuck me the IQ on this board is in the toilet
    >>

Fight existing as a mechanic had no bearing on this design.

    >Target creature you control fights target creature you don't cotnrol
    >Each deals damage equal to its power to the other
Sounds like the same effect to me. One just goes on the stack as a spell and the other as an activated ability. When blue is not being played they're effectively the same.
    >>
    >>98887936
Would help if you could read. Your opponents creature deals damage equal to its power divided to any of your wolves that dealt damage
So if you had a 1/8 and your opponent had two 4/4 wolves, you can do 1 damage to one of them, instead of fighting twice and dealing 1 damage to each

Making 10 decks based around the guilds of ravnica designed to play against each other. I'd like to cram "the best hits" of every guild but Im mostly aiming at quintessential game play and philosophy of each respective guild
    >>
    >>98897861
I really like that idea anon. Before these Foundations monocolor precons were even a twinkle in MaRo's nutsack I'd already made 5 monocolor decks kind of intended to play against each other. I didn't really try to embody each of the color's "thing" though. I mean it's inevitably to be kind of type-cast when building monocolor if you want it to be at all playable, because you WILL be using staples but of the 5 only the blue artifact one is really stereotypical. Red is burn but it's also kinda storm so I think that's different enough.

Anyway what I'm saying is that if I took your idea I wouldn't be able to keep myself to the limits of the guilds, the temptation to break type would be too strong.
I have thought of a plain azorius "law mage" type deck before though
    >>
    >>98898039
I'm not married to the decks being strictly ravnica cards if the gruul deck needs branching bolt or something it will go in as long as it fits the "vibes" but I most likely won't move much past core set cards
    >>
    >>98898170
No I'm with it, I'm just saying I wouldn't be able to stop myself. If I committed to making 10 twocolor decks I would be compelled to break type. Do something retarded like rakdos artifacts or something

Both of those sound really fun as long as you stick within those colors/guilds general themes and limitations. For the guilds you can even have the guild leaders being the commanders, which is cool.
Could do the same with Strixhaven too.
If you can get 5 players you could even do a star match.
That all said, you need a group actually willing to play stuff like this and in my experiance people just play their own decks unless they only have 3 or so.

The opponent must have more creatures than you at the beginning of the upkeep, or else oath won't create a trigger at all. Animating a manland in the upkeep would do nothing.
