Why?
Why does it filter designers so hard?

Im trying to make a d6 system myself and one of the hurdles is that results can be very swingy which makes it difficult to design around

This, exploding dice is a meme. It's worse then criticals because it can keep going up and up, and if you put a cap on how many times a die can explode that is defeating the point of it. Exploding dice are good however to see how out of control a situation can get.

It doesn’t support the consumerist dice set obsession that hooks tourists. Most wargames just use d6s because it’s obviously more sensible.
>>98826419
3d6 is just a straight up superior version of d20, especially because it works out much more stable in scores with a normal rather than a flat distribution. Ironically this makes it far more sensible to use in something like dnd because the heckin epic critical successes and failures (18s and 3s respectively in this system) would actually be rare enough to merit something crazy happening, it is literally more than ten times less likely to happen than getting the lowest scores on a d20

1D6 can't handle random tables with more than six outcomes.
It also can't handle tables with more than three outcomes at different probability ranges.

>>
>>98829401

For a limited range of 1-6 outcomes and no room for arrays it just works, yes.
>>
>>98829430
>You're using more than 1D6 in that case.
true, you would have to use something to stop time and check, but time was just an example

if you know the cardinal directions you can mark the edges of each face of the die and when you roll you can get 24 results from 1d6. by counting bounces and other stuff you can also modify the roll. so there are other solutions that can expand the range of a d6 that dont involve using anything else but knowledge or what you are seeing

The discussion started about how a D6 is *literally* all you need, and I have explained, numerous times, why it is only effective for limited ranges, and why it isn't suitable for more engaging arrays and tables.
If the D6 was a universal solution like people are saying it is (I reiterate "LITERALLY ALL YOU NEED"), we wouldn't be having this conversation.

"A D6 is literally all you need," remember?
>>
>>98832899
see
>>98831857
>>98831893

you don't roll a number and look-up the number in a table.
you roll on the table and pick the closest item where the die lands.
You have a list of 97 names? Drop a die (or pebble, or whatever) and pick the closest one.

You want to detemine a random wind direction? Just roll in an empty box cover (or on a sheet of paper). The position determines the direction (top border = N, right = E, etc.); the distance from the center how strong the wind is (say close to the center= no wind, in the middle = light wind, on the border = strong wind) or you can just draw some circles with a wind scale if you so want.

You want to know where you hit someone?
Print a humanoid silhouette and drop your die (or pebble or whatever) on it.
Headshot? Yeah, that's a crit. Glancing blow (die is on the border) to the shoulder? Just a flesh wound. Left pinky finger? It's gone, you are now 9-finger-Jim. Not on the picture? You missed.

tldr: Think roulette (with a ball aka a d1 that determines a number between 0-36).
So yeah, a pebble is all you need.

I honestly don't give a shit about a game engine being good or bad anymore.
I've played a good engine and /tg/ collectively hated it. It made me realize that engines don't need to be good or even functional because people will hate it no matter what. So just play what ever is the most widely known or the easiest to run from GM standpoint because that's all that is going to matter.
>>
>>98847298
>Is 2d6 really enough?
Yes, fits nicely, granularity is in the zone.
This system had been lauded for 20 years so far because it works despite it being simple.

>To find out if a character succeeds at a task:
>Roll two d6 to get a total from 2 to 12
>Add an appropriate attribute
>If fighting, add an appropriate combat ability
>If not fighting, add the rank of an appropriate career
>Add any other situational modifiers
>If the result is:
>9 or more: the character succeeds.
>8 or less: the character fails.
>Two sixes is a Mighty Success if a 12 would have granted a success, otherwise this is just a
normal success.
>Two ones is always a failure. A character can gain a Hero Point if they make it a Calamitous Failure.

There's a common hack for those wanting longer campaign arcs, use 2d10 and Target Number is 12, or 2d12 and TN is 15 (or 18 if you double stats). (Personally I would scale down the experience points given, but it's not a popular scheme.)
>>
>>98848314
It seem that people like this game because rolling a small bell curve against the fixed TN doesn't require stacking modifiers and book-keeping. Sometimes I run games just like that without any system. I think with bigger dice, crits just become too rare to care.
>>
>>98847335
It's not about what people like, it's about what can be done with it.
>>

>>
>>98849049
>using tools beyond the D6.

>>
>>98849365

Did you forget what the conversation is about?
>>
>>98849918
>illogical extreme
>>
>>98850115
You're the one who thinks having paper and a pencil is too many tools in addition to a d6.
For ttpgs.
>>
>>98850288
Nope.
I've only been talking about what's used to determine the result of a die, not about what's recorded before or after the roll's resolution.
The conversation has always been about the faulty notion that "a D6 is literally all you need".
>>
>>98850301
So all you need is a D6 and some paper to make a dice drop table. Glad we agree.
If you need
>literally
to be in fact literal you know its necessarily an impossible condition due to the absurdity you claim to render the conversation meaningless.
>>
>>98850506
The intent of a drop table is to be included in the result of the die, so it is something more than a D6 determining the result, so at that point it's not literally just the D6 determining the result.
If you need a drop table to create more results for your D6, the statement "a D6 is literally all you need" is false.
>>
>>98850719
If a dice drop table is too many additional things then pen and paper are too many additional things for your concerns. To play ttrpgs.
So do you agree its an absurd statement to require "literally" only one thing?
All other examples of how to use any object will necessarily require it to exist in space time with all the other objects and their phenomenological being.
>>
>>98848707
>I think with bigger dice, crits just become too rare to care.
The crits became 2-3 & 19-20 with 2d10, and 2-3 & 23-24 with 2d12, so they stay relevant.

For me, I like this system most because of the "careers" system; characters have "careers" instead of "skills".

This is the old debate about low-trust vs high-trust tables. It is solved by not gaming along with assholes, either GMs or players.

>Won't it lead to optimal careers and constant tries to convince GM that your career apply?
Only min-maxers are interested in optimal characters, no system or game is impervious to min-maxers. Is BoL a "mother-may-I" system? Yes, but only for non-combat situations. Combat doesn't use careers. But you can know this by reading about it from books instead from a crappy spammy thread in 4chins full of low-effort puckee-like questions.

If you are interested in checking BoL, that's fine, if not, that's ok too. I would say If there's a common criticisms for BoL from most people is that the magic system is too broad, diegetic, and requires imaginative players; and as always, there are fixes for it for people that aren't into using their own imagination and just want things given to them in silver plates.

Honesty, this whole thread reads like fluff/polemics/trolling made by the very own mods or jannies to increase posting numbers, or a bored troll or contrarian fishing for (You)s as a form of parasocial loner interaction.

If people hate on d6s for the sake of it, to each their own, their loss. Why would someone look or ask for evangelism of a system to be convinced of something when the very thing is there to be read? If someone wants to read about a specific TTRPG without wasting any money, just go to the pdf share thread here in /tg/ and look for it or just ask.

Sorry anon, goodbye, I'm closing this tab for good.

Not the faggot anon who was dragging this thread artificially, but a fellow BoL enthusiast (well, more of Dicey Tales guy):
The best hack is to use 2d8 and move the threshold just one notch up to 10.
This way you get both a proper scale for character progression and the right kind of bullshit feel for pulp action., effectively starting as common Joes who get to action movie characters after the first campaign or two, and then nobody minds the success rates.
Also, in my experience, DT is superior for long-term games simply because it can be way, way, way more varied in terms on progression, basically giving bonuses to narrower fields or ones that feel more distinct (usually both). Like how often do you think you are going to use that Jungle Explorer when the game is simply set in the Antarctica? And it can be part of the exact same campaign
>inb4 you can do the same in Hyboria
Yeah, but that assumes the entire table knows the lore and its fictional geography and alternatives. Take a wild guess which setting makes it ten times easier for anyone who simply didn't drop out of school before 4th grade.

Another good hack is when playing H+I and ignoring the idiotic idea of having to earn Fortune Points, rather than just having a fixed amount of them like in most versions of BoL. The guy who wrote H+I either never had a "Silent Bob" player or was just fucking retarded by requiring entire table to be hyperactive social animals (or never read Alatriste).
>>
>>98861682
>I already said that doesn't handle more complex tables
And? Tables are crutches for uncreative retards. They are not a necessity
>>
>>98861682
>I already said that doesn't handle more complex tables
Wrong.
2d6 gives you both a bell-curve with 11 potential outcomes and also a fully random table of up to 36 positions. Both of which can be ranged for your needs.
But what else than the dumbest take to expect from a gameless retard who also can't into the most basic math.

The biggest hurdle with using the more common polyhedrals is that some of most useful systems have already been designed and published several decades ago.

I could shit a good d6 system with my eyes closed. Its a shit uninspired die. Designing for d6 always, always feels like designing a board game. That's why I don't. D6 is a shit normie die. Wanting a d6 system admits to me the only dice you own you pulled from your yatzee box. Uou are a casual.

Six sided dice games truly are the great litmus test of The Hobby

But 2d6 peak at the middle of the curve.
>>
If six sided dice are the Arrowroot biscuits of dice, than what would be the others?

Brother, what point are you trying to make here.

Mostly being silly that the 2d6 distribution doesn't line up with the macro and that's funny in and of itself to me.

What is it with you and yahtzee? Did you develop ptsd from constantly losing at yahtzee and now seeing six-sided dice gives you flashbacks? I'm sorry, mate, I didn't know.

You know that's where you get your first d6s. It's the easiest boardgame normies get d6s from.
>You must have lost yahtzee too many times huh?
I apparently can't even spell that stupid game's name correctly, and you think I played is so many times I have PTSD.

I never played yahtzee. I got my first dice from one of those "10 in 1 classic board games" boxes.
>I apparently can't even spell that stupid game's name correctly, and you think I played is so many times I have PTSD.
Nah, I was just being an asshole. But such an intense aversion to six-sided dice (the best kind of dice) is rather strange.

d6 is probably only good for hex based games
>>
>>98885889
Why only hex based games?

Nevermind then, I thought there was actually some deeper reasoning to >>98885889 than "both have six sides".
