Itt: art that inspired you to write about fantasy subjects for the rest of your life non-stop because fantasy things are so metal and badass that you couldn't help yourself from falling in love with it for eternity. Amen. Am I the only one that feels this way? Please post your favorite stuff. Even the depressing stuff.
Well I don't write, I just GM.Here's something out of my reference folder that's inspired my current sci-fantasy post-apocalyptic game. I adore the isolation, which I also find handy in running meaning I have to keep track of less NPCs.

I'd say Ken Kelly's illustrations either for People of the Black Circle,
>>98815471Or his evenly awesome image for Red Nails
>>98815474The hazy background atmosphere, the power in the musculature, the impressive bodies, dramatic posing, it's good stuff.Clyde Caldwell is also pretty great, as a lot of his art covered the AD&D modules to give tone to how a lot of fantasy felt back then.
>>98815487Though now that I'm remembering better, I think Michael Whelan's "Sentinels" probably was one of the single most inspirational - it was the cover or one of the main entries in a "Best fantasy art" book back in my high school library and I always loved imagining the world that gave rise to such an image.
>>98815504I was sitting here wondering where I'd seen this piece before, then it dawned on me THAT IT'S THE COVER OF THE BOOK I'M READING RIGHT NOW! What are the odds?
Liz Danforth drawings from 80s MERP rulebook will always have a place in my heart. Sadly, I can't upload them (some IP rangeban or something of this Nu-4chan).
>>98815487And on the left: some random middle aged dude's head.
gonna risk being annoying and pretentious by saying non-fantasy art is what usually drives my imagination for fantasy. For me natural history is entwined with myth and folklore.
>>98813516Probably this one when I was about 9 in a used book store. Getting the VHS wasn't an option but getting books, even if they were total pulp, was a lot more acceptable to my family. Having a hard time finding a larger or full version of the art but it got me good. Not my copy.
Great thread op
>>98815861It sure is.
>>98815831thats fucking awesome.pic related was mine at a similar ageborrowed it from the school library and read it back to back i dont know how many times.i still remember how beat up and held together with clear tape it was.to child me this was a goddamn tome of power.
>>98816844lolwut
I'll never find the original picture again because I saw it some 15 years ago on an old forum that doesn't exist anymore, but it was a very well made sketch of a conquistador fighting a skeleton. I don't know why that hit me as much as it did but it more or sparked my obsession with the aesthetics of the Age of Sail, the Franco-Spanish War, etc. Basically the 15th-17th centuries.Pic semi-related, conquistadors had mad drip.
>>98815831God damn i had this but for books 7 8 and 9I had zero context of the Macross story, but 12 year old me was fully engrossed and bummed out by the ending despite lacking the 9 books worth of attachment to the main cast.I remember picking up Dune at the same book fair.Same reason, engrossing cover, with the story itself pulling me in even moreso.
>>98823000Correction it was the omnibus for books 4 5 and 6.
>>98819470I got this one the Fighting Fantasy books around then too, there was a gladiator fight with blindfolds on that seemed super intense as a kid. Well before that even I remember something that must have been an rpg monster manual me and another kid found at elementary school somehow, I vaguely recall a map that might have been harn. There was a cambion in it I thought was super cool. It maybe had a hardback blue cover? >>98823000There's a bit in one where one of the pilots, Roy maybe its been 3 or so decades, orders a meal, they get called out before it arrives and he dies and the book cuts back to the restaurant where the meal just sits there without him because he's dead and that was a weirdly clear image to me.
Bump
>>98827356I remember Blazing Sword of Darkness. My favourite part was Arthugar's horse materializing out of the shadownet, really got across the dying earth vibes.
>>98815743I am going to risk being even more annoying and pretentions by "erm akshually"ing the art you posted being no less fantasy than fantasy art deeply inspired by real history.
>>98827042I love that one, too.
>>98813516
>>98816844Is that supposed to be a Crystal Palace Megalosaurus come to life?
>>98830804Antediluvian Jurassic Park
>>98815548Sauce?
Everything in this book.
>>98815487Jesus, that girl is literally the rogue from Shadows over Mystara!

>>98835985Ah yes the classic >Demonjumpers III: When the Sun Was An Egg The subplot about Demon Prince of Artistic Lies had his legs melt into the mountain was the part that really got me into fantasy comics and stories.
>>98836058oooh is that from the dungeon entrances thread from awhile backlooks awesome either way
I read LOTR in like sixth grade and this chapter always really stuck with me.
>>98813516I actually often found the artwork fell short of the words that actually inspired me.
>>98813516Awesome thread OP
>>98813516Man I used to eat forgotten realms and dragonlance books for breakfast lunch and dinner.
>>98838746Thanks. I only make awesome threads. The next game I'm gonna run is going to be a horror game. I'm excited because I can run an actual scary Ravenloft game but my players funny know that yet (I read a lot of horror books).
I have to say I don't give a single damn about the art.Two paragraphs of what a monster does and why it is a problem or whatever is worth more to me than fifty pictures.
>>98813516... games? No, seriously, this thread is basically parody-tier of aimless shitposting thread with no relation with TTRPG or even tabletops in general. Also>metal>this imageNigger, you need to train your spam bot better than that.
>>98839803>needs two paragraphs to activate their almondsngmi
>>98839993You can cry about it online. I make awesome threads. I've run a 7 campaign, a 9 year campaign and I'm running a campaign that turns 41 next year. What do you have? Oh, right: endless tears. Crybaby bitch. I'm a god compared to you. My players show up and have fun. You endlessly bitch online about your insipid thoughts.
>>98840548Honestly same. I remember first seeing this in person and the darkness of the forest really stands out when looking at it at eye level. Immediately felt a great sense of both fear and awe. Utterly haunting.
>>98814610Puts me in mind of the Yellow Martians and their giant magnet>>98819439Adventuring party of 5>>98840548This one really hits hard, can't beat an image with a sense of mystery
>>98844864I found this as a kid at the library and couldn't put it down.I can't believe Segrelle made a whole comic book out of paintings. What a chad.
>>98844890i know what you mean.i couldnt look away either when i first saw it.i posted some other art of his further up.was a little turned off with the post apoc reveal but its actually grown on me over time.peak pulpy fantasy, in a way that was before the genre split of fantasy and sci fi.
>everyone posting legendary fantasy art>meanwhile my biggest inspiration is the Shadows over mystara vidya
>>98845221
>>98845221you gotta be jokingthat shit was awesomeabsolute sovl
>>98845221>>98845234>>98845381Back when Capcom could make appealing games and not an endless stream of AAA slop
Going to out myself as a youngshitter but to babby me pic related was truly peak and it still kinda hits if you ask me.
>>98846182Oh... oh fuck...
>>98813516Personally I love this kind of art. It just strikes that perfect measure where it's not quite overdesigned.
>>98852442It has a good sense of verisimilitude. If you break it down it's clearly not so realistic but it sparks the imagination enough and doesn't remove you from fantasy.
I like when Japanese art too clear western inspiration but still kept a bit of anime flair.
>>98852516fuck duderecord of lodoss war was so fucking goodand so was guin saga
>>98845195I only read a few of the early ones as a kid (that's what was available in my country at the time). Having now read the rest, I don't feel like I missed that much. The last few ones in particular I found extremely uninteresting.>post apocYou mean the sci fi multiverse stuff?
>>98854942more when segrelles starts introducing submarines and airplanes into what at first seemed like a fairy tale inspired fantasy setting
>>98854969The scope of the "setting" changes so much over the course of the series. In the first half dozen volumes, the most cutting edge tech (excluding the magic artefacts) is experimental proto-Da-Vinci stuff, including the submarine. Then we start getting the multiverse stuff with Atlanteans and telepathic lizardpeople and shit, where it goes off the rails into a mix of hard sci fi and post apoc with flying cars and shieet. If you mean the latter, then I don't really care for it. It also correlates with a decrease in booba, dragons and swords... Maybe it'll grow on me too though.
>>98855024>Then we start getting the multiverse stuff with Atlanteans and telepathic lizardpeople and shitThat sounds kind of sick ngl
>>98823195I think this is the book in question.
>>98855357I'm not against it on principle, but it is a bit jarring and loses the connection to the established setting and characters. You can find the scanned comic online easily, although English language scans only have most but not all of the volumes (and some have bras drawn over the naked tits because judeo-Americans are a plague upon the gentile world). I found the rest in French and Spanish.
>>98857044Might be, it has the Cambion but the art is different enough from how I remember it and there's no map with distribution of creatures on it. It was long ago enough there cold be that sort of memory rebuilding but doesn't seem right.
>>98819470I own an old copy do you want it?
>>98862351well yeah obviously but im not gonna post details on a chinese mahjong forum
This entire artbook formed the baseline of "Fantasy World" for me as a kid. It was the only time I remember Electronics Boutique ever selling an artbook, too.
I really like lost forgotten cities
>>98835243fpbp
>>9885251190s TSR art had SOVL
>>98856966I like this a lot
>>98877110yo, is that Fingolfin, the High King of the Ñoldor, fighting in single combat against the Dark Lord Morgoth at the gates of Angband in First Age year 456 (during the Dagor Bragollach)?
>>98876432>anon says fpbp, which means First Post Best Post>look inside the post>it's not the first postAnon I would advise lurking moar before making the ridicule.Well, you like forwoken realms so in any case you would have made the ridicule anyways...
>>98878120Fifty-second post best post, you dumb neckbeard.
>>98878154I accept your concession
>>98878177yeah uh I fucked up in my last post but in any case I can't believe you counted the posts numbers, do you have an addon that counts them or are you such a looser that you actually counted it was the fifty-second?

>>98852516Big Shoulders Era was the last time anime was good. It's just a fact.>>98869880Final Fantasy sucks liquid shit through a straw. That said FF9 has a cool visual style.
>>98883913nah
>>98884312>responding to bait that obviouscmon SON
>>98884310Hence why I posted the cover of the art book and not the game, dingus.
This one picture inspired me to write a huge story on an old Warhammer forum on a Black Orc mercenary for Warhammer Fantasy. Years later in TOW, I brought back the character, albeit as a vanilla Orc but otherwise identical.
>>98884310>Big Shoulders Era was the last time anime was good. It's just a fact.I cannot argue with that, friend. I cannot argue with that.
YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FORWARD PROGRESSION!
>>98887712Love this. Very cool.
>>98887712what is their tax policy? is that really enough fields to support a kingdom that size?
>>98887882Finish your book, George.
Let's go delving
>>98887691that's a cool depiction of a ballfrognever seen this one before
>>98813516This image defined not only my /tg/ hobbies, it also solidified me into being a scalie and kink to dominate women
>>98890211Ted Nasmith gets a bit overshadowed which is a shame but was still a pretty prominent Tolkien artist.
>>98891765I remember seeing a big cardboard cutout version of that Iksar in a net cafe back when Kunark came out.
>>98813516Technically not the album art itself, but the story in Framing Armageddon helped inspire a ttrpg I'm working on.
>>98893046I really wanted to read that as RED Earth.
>>98852442Early Daisuke was great
>>98895651Yeah, he really went south both artistically and musically. Strive depresses me.
Never much liked the books if I'm being at all honest but it was a right nice cover.
