Since the "super" threads are just bumpfag talking to himself, I decided to make this thread instead of waiting to post in another one

My GM wants to make a super game, but he is still stalling on choosing a system since there's so many options and he doesn't want to read a bunch of books to decide. I need your recs for a system, and one or more REASONS for the recs so that I can pitch it to him. Whoever wins gets a (you)

I like Powers Unlimited but I got taught Palladium from a department of corrections graduate, apparently the source of where people learn the system.

There is the Marvel RPG with the FASERIP system, some people swear by that. They also loudly say all proceding Marvel TOG systems have sucked in comparison.
    >>
    >>98810815
    >REASONS
For that there is a very big selection of powers and classes. Powers are both major and minor with their own complexities. It covers everything from magic to technology to regular humans with normal specialized abilities. Palladium is basically just 2e with more rules tacked on so its a familiar wound if you know it.

The upside/downside is that there are lots of supplemental books as well as a lot of stuff in their annual mag, the Rifter. Also there is kind of no official setting. You can find background for things in the book and plenty of campaign settings in the supplemental stuff, everyone has ignored that and just does whatever they want when they GM.
    >>
    >>98810687
I recommend Prowlers & Paragons. It's easy to use, there are a few google sheets that do your math for you floating around if you're inclined to use them, and the core system is easy to grasp. The powers are a good time and IMO fairly priced, the way games play out does require getting used to if you're used to more "meat points and damage" type systems (i.e. D&Dfinder) but once you understand it it's really fun, and the pros/cons (I can't recall the exact name but you can add drawbacks to powers to reduce their cost and pick extra boons like being rich or having a sidekick) add depth despite the general simplicity of the system.

Again, if you're not used to systems where your HP isn't really HP and are more failure points (the nature of supers systems in general in my experience, because a lot of heroes are too strong to kill conventionally at higher power levels, which the system does account for), there's a learning curve, but most supers systems have this. It also comes pre-packaged with a ton of pre-made bad guys, simple rules for mooks, and the power system lets you choose your relevant stat based on how your hero's powers work. You can go all tech and be batman or iron man, opt for psychic powers and be an xavier type, or even innate powers and be a superman clone, or mix powers entirely if you want to get crazy with it.
    >>
    >>98810854
Ah, right, its also unbalanced and insane. Its seamless compatible with TMNT, Ninjas and Superspies, Nightbane, and other palladium joints that dont use 'mega damage' but that in no way means you will not be outclassed or underpowered in comparison to others. Your temu ninja turtle or James Bond will be contributing bupkiss when on a team where they picked powers that does what you do but better.

Never thought of Palladium, but it looks too crunchy for the group. And my GM did express the worry of some characters being more powerful than others, Hawkeye-style.

Regardless, thank you for the effortposting, anon

    >but it looks too crunchy for the group
Well I was going to suggest HERO System but if Palladium is too crunchy HERO absolutely is. I'll suggest Danger League.

    >>98810687
Savage Worlds with the Super Powers Companion or the Necessary Evil setting.

    Pros
    >Has clear power level distinctions starting at street and going all the way to cosmic
    >You can build around a theme pretty easily because powers (the spells, single instant powers like eye blasts, etc) are easily modified so one basic power can be very malleable
    >Always on abilities like super strength and speed are laid out mechanically and are strong as fuck but nowhere near as malleable as powers
    >The basic rules are Savage Worlds rules so you also are training your players how to use a generic system so you have a shitload of options for future games using established settings or making your own which is easy as hell to do with Savage Worlds.

    Cons
    >You have to keep shit at the agreed upon power level. Bringing in a villain just one level higher will have your group get bodied really fast and one level lower will have something laughably weak compared to your group even if the villains team up
    >Savage Worlds is action focused. If you want to get into the soap opera bullshit with comics (social shit) and investigative stuff is possible but not very good. In fact, it is just a bad system when you aren't playing action focused games in general. A large amount of people want action focused games though, so if that's your jam, run it.

    >PROS
Everyone knows how to play, you already feel like you're superheroes, the DM will cue maniacal laughter but knows that no matter what can barely challenge the players.
    >CONS
Reskinning should make you feel bad even though its super easy. Also, I hate this idea, but... I also hate that it works.

    >>You have to keep shit at the agreed upon power level. Bringing in a villain just one level higher will have your group get bodied really fast and one level lower will have something laughably weak compared to your group even if the villains team up
This seems like a pretty big issue. Taking on superhumans as a Batfamily is pretty core to the experience.
    >>
    >>98812662
Batman isn't street level. The guy survived falling through the Earth's atmosphere from orbit and physically beat up Reverse Flash that was not depowered and was not surprised and was actively engaged in one v one combat with him.

That said, a street level hero can have super powers MOST of the X-men and mutants in general are street level. Just how most of the X-men and mutants in general would get their shit kicked out their eye sockets if they fought Superman.

The breakdown for power levels goes by Super Power points that you use for setting up your tool kit and a limit for how many points can be invested in a single power.

    >Young/teen heroes
    Super Power Points 15
    PP limit 5
Hilariously, this is your street level stuff. Despite the next level being called Streetfighters.

    >Streetfighters
    SPP 30
    PP 10
Gritty crime fighting. Not enough to take on any kind of military presence, but can definitely get most shit done beneath that level.

    >Four Color
    SPP 45
    PP 15

THIS is you standard comic book group of B-listers. X-force/X-factor, Great Lake Avengers. Not the BIG hitters but no slouch at all

    >Heavy Hitters
    SPP 60
    PP 20

That military force mentioned earlier? THESE guys can solo most military engagements. It will be taxing, but it can be done. A team of these guys will shut down most armies.

    >World Class/Cosmic
    SPP 75 or higher
    PP 25 or higher

One of these guys clearly outperforms most national militaries. A group of them are when you are reaching for Cosmic level threats to stop them.
    >>
    >>98810879
    How big is it?
    >>
My group uses Marvel Multiverse RPG
    Pros
    >Easy to learn use
    >Lots of stated out official characters in every book
    >Robust character creation, even with just the core book

    Cons
    >You all better like Marvel, you can reskin powers and even characters but the system is intended for marvel characters
    >Additional rules are in every expansion book, like character progression rules (called Getting Schooled) are in the X-Men and Avengers expansions

All in all it's a simple system with some flexibility, but you'll want all the books (mind you that's the core + 4 expansions atm) to really see what it can do

    >>
The answer to this question is always 4th edition Champions (The big blue book). It is, quite literally, the perfect superhero RPG.

    Flexible, balanced powers creation.
3d6 skill/combat system for nice bell curve
Splatbooks like NinjaHero to add focus to particular genres.
A good selection of adventures and sourcebooks with character examples, NPCs, organizations, etc.
Despite the memes it is not complicated. If you can add & subtract, you can play Champions.
    >>

    >>98815098
I've read the newest iteration of the FASERIP system (Hero World) and I liked it, particularly the idea of power extensions. The hero point system is ok, but the karma system seems better, as it rewards actually fighting crime.

    >>98815177
Champions is a name that obviously always comes up, but I always heard it was crunchy, as a post above said. Is 4th edition better in this regard?

    >>98815453
He's a beginner GM, he only ran one or two games with simple made up homebrews and maybe played a few sessions of D&D. This would be his first time running a proper system, hence him not having a clue where to start. Since I'm gonna be a player, he's not keen on giving much details, but he wants something that neither too crunchy nor too freeform. I tried shilling Masks but he didn't want it, so I guess narrative games are off the table

Since we're doing system recs, which is best for low-powered stuff? Bonus points for weird borderline-useless powers
    >>
    >>98813753
It's a pretty big jump in power levels to the point the PCs are only going to experience difficulties in similar powered individuals. That would mean the base power level of mooks would be high enough it's hard to justify the main villains not already have conquered the planet at that point. One of the benefits that Necessary Evil has is the big bads already killed the heroes and effectively did take over the planet so the power scaling works there. Four color and up really highlights just how incredibly unrealistic the world state of comic books are. You can run those power levels but the PCs are only going to really work if they just hang out in a headquarters and go out to fight big threats while ignoring every other negative societal situation (which is what comic books do) but it is kind of shit for roleplaying purposes for a lot of people. Honestly though, if your group treats it like an episode of a Sat AM cartoon with zero interconnective, it's fine.

    >>
    >>98833935
yes there are games like Dispatch and Manga like MHA where it works. Should be easy to adapt to a tabletop setting. You could even have players have multiple characters that they can play, to represent shifts
    >>
    >>98810687
I'm gonna suggest Palladium's Heroes Unlimited. It's pretty awesome.
    >>
    Mutants and Masterminds

its like gurps lite, gurps for babies which means character creation is fairly versatile and fun but the game itself is only mid. Really let's you make anything you can think of though which I really like
    >>
    >>98821629
The villains don't need to be super deep or complex. Maybe they're monsters, or sociopaths, or just genuine assholes.
The players don't want to hear the backstory of every villain. Sometimes they just want to punch monsters.

On the flip-side of that, any villain that has goons or lieutenants the party needs to face needs some kind of money/threats/charisma to keep them around and working for them. Save your best material for them, because one player WILL ALWAYS want to ask a billion questions to a random mook and put you on the spot.
Like, they don't know where the main dude is and where he hid the plot macguffin and what his favorite toothpaste flavor is! Stop trying to crowbar useless information out of a random nobody and holding up the game!

As far as heroes, start with their powers, then work backwards. The most important parts of a hero is what they can do, what can stop them, and how they present themselves.
Then figure out why they chose to use those powers for good, and what their secret identity is, and who their romance partner that keeps getting kidnapped is.
    >>

    >>
    >>98836090
I mean what villain worth their salt doesn't do their schemes at night.
But even if it more of an on call thing, just having another hero to play can help break up the tedium of Hero Games, cause there really isn't that next big step up like some other TTRPGS

Idr what edition but I made a broken character in this game by making a competely paralyzed quadripalegic who took no abilities that weren't under equipment points and was just a tank piloted by a corpse using the iron man esque rules. Iirc abilities or attacks purchased as equipment cost a percentage less of points, like 50% or something, so I bought a tank strapped with guns and was completely immobile and took a bunch of non combat detective skills and was just a sentient tank. Then the GM thought he was cute by making the first encounter down an underground ramp into a villain lair I couldn't fit in, so I just sat outside with some tied up goons and opening doors via a little remotely piloted drone. good times.

Don't get drowned in unnecessary details. Making a city? No need to write a whole chronicle year-by-year, just figure out its founding and add 2-3 major facts/important events: it was partially destroyed in the great earthquake of 18XX, has a twin city rival, there's a giant underground network of caves underneath it and so on...

Don't be afraid to be a bit kitchen-sinky for your first time. If you have a good, coherent idea already, go for it but don't be afraid to add a magic character just because you haven't figured out the source of all magic.

I like my villains to have a specific goal in mind of a sphere of particular interest. For example mad scientist obsessed with cloning will be especially concerned with acquiring new samples, making new clones, eliminating originals etc. Demon banished out of Hell would eventually want to go back but there are many ways to do so: steal grimoires, start a cult, enslave other demons... Obviously not every villain has to be like this. Some just be crazy or just a force of nature but you get me.

I think people get to in the weeds when it comes to making villains. You just need to make the most insane and petty losers you can think of.
I made a cloning geneticist who thinks bees wants to be ruled by a king not a queen.
Made a guy who can summon apes who then had his brain put into a gorillas body, so I could make his backstory a Harambee reference and then when I use him reference classic weird comic book covers.
People forget that The Juggernaut was just a guy who found a magic rock who hates his step brother. His step brother just happens to be a powerful mutant. What if instead of being a powerful mutant he just owned a couple McDonald's.
Not every villain has to be cool, many villains are losers. Have fun with it

Old and it shows, but generally well-liked and has quite a few retroclones. All the books are easily available online
    >Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Gama aka Marvel SAGA
Kinda niche but has its fans
    >Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game
Entirely based around spending resource pools. Probably the least popular
    >Marvel Heroic Roleplaying
IMHO one of the best cape systems ever made
    >Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game
Latest game. Haven't heard much about it but none of it was good
    >>
    >>98857424

    >>
    >>98857424
I've read Marvel Heroic and it seemed like overcomplicated crap. And the fact you only play ready-made characters doesn't help. What do you like about it?
    >>
    >>98858906
    >overcomplicated
The core resolution mechanic is kinda clunky to explain on paper, but once you wrap your head around it it's fairly simple in practice (essentially roll a fistful of dice and pick 3 but there's a bit more nuance)
    >you only play ready-made characters
There's rules for character creation, but I don't know why you'd play a Marvel game to make OC donutsteels.
    >What do you like about it?
It leans into cape logic rather then getting autistic about powerlevels. Captain America can go toe-to-toe with literal gods on the Avengers because he has Team d10 and Lead by Example d8 but those don't apply if he's on his own against Batroc the Leaper so both of these will challenge him in different ways.
Also the dice system gives you a lot of options. Usually having more dice is good, but sometimes you want big dice, since they can be useful even if they roll a low number

Probably the worst thing about it is the very short time it was officially supported, and most of the official material was Civil Wargarbage

You can look at Cortex Prime/Plus if you want to make your own characters. Marvel Heroic is an offshoot that eventually got dropped cuz licensing. Cortex is definitely not much of a "tactical" game, but its definitely a great roleplaying game at creating Drama and it has some absolutely great PvP.
    >>
    >>98844074
its gurps for babies, meaning adding complications and weaknesses to abilities makes them more points efficient. A laser that one shots the bad is expensive, a laser that one shots the bad on fridays if he's wearing glasses and had donuts for dinner is cheaper because it does nothing.

Equipment can be hacked, stolen, or any number of things unlike an inherent power so its taken for less points. many point buy systems reward adding in complications. great example would be a green lantern ring not working with the ring off, the ring could be stolen or it doesnt work on yellow people. Its just a weakness that a guy who just has those powers wouldn't have, and it makes for better role playing by giving villains something to exploit.

A few months back, I ran Sentinel Comics, a gridless yet still tactical-combat-oriented superhero RPG. We completed two of the premade adventures.

It was been reasonably satisfying, but there were definitely several balance hiccups here and there. This is to say nothing of the character optimization: https://forums.greaterthangames.com/t/mindwanderers-character-creation-tips/19799

Even so, I think Sentinel Comics is the single most well-balanced superhero game I have played.

Sentinel Comics is a tactical-combat-oriented superhero RPG, with 4e-style powers. The actual superpowers at a PC's disposal are mostly flavor, and as narrative justification for making Overcome (i.e. solve a problem that is not directly related to fighting) actions. When a character with the Physical Powerhouse archetype uses their Frontline Fighting ability to attack while tanking for the party, it does not mechanically matter whether they roll their Strength superhuman power + their Banter mundane quality, Cold + Conviction, Elasticity + Magical Lore, or anything else; it is all just flavor. I am perfectly fine with this.

My GMing style usually winds up presenting superheroes as less "comic book superhero" and more "high-powered urban fantasy with no real masquerade," though.

This my plan for a supers games, but life got in the way after a single session and I kind of forgot where I was going with it. And our minmaxer kinda killed the fight we did have, so I just called it. I don't think I'll ever run a supers game lol.

You should first be asking, "What is the villain's plan?" If they are stealing science shit, it's typically just part of a grander purpose or they are being paid by someone else with a grander purpose. So you need to know what the endgame is first and then think of what component you think would need to be stolen.

Thank you for the breakdown, but I gotta ask: given that I'm the GM, can't I give villains whatever arbitrary power limitations I feel like to give the players the right amount of challenge? Also, won't the game end like every single Savage Worlds game already does, with someone scoring quadruple exploding dice and instagibbing whatever they're fighting?

iron man was, ironically, the last avenger to drop his secret identity, only doing so a few years before iron man 1 came out
and even iron man 1 was originally going to have a secret identity before RDJ ad libbed "i iron man" because it made more sense to the more flamboyant depiction of stark in that movie

thor, hulk, and cap all did keep civilian identities at first, but the 70s really ripped through the cast and made them public figures and all of them ended up ditching the idea
dr strange is an amusing example in that his name is on the phonebook and he doesnt make any effort to hide his identity, but no one recognizes him out of costume
    >>
honestly dislike superhero stuff that ditches secret identities. and secret identities make sense. you think the cartel isn't going to chop up the family of a superhero the second they find out their real name?
    >>
    family?
    >>
    >>98879506
this is almost always the first problem that unmasked heroes have to deal with, because it then provides a narrative reason why they dont bother with it again afterwards
even iron man 3 had everyone call stark out on giving everyone his home address and then getting jumped there
as for hulk, they have been milking his "man being hunted" storyline that came as a direct result of everyone knowing what bruce banner turns into for decades

as to why nobody just kills willie thompkins in F4, its because the F4 are premium superheroes and nobody wants to "its clobberin time" to turn into "its killing time" because they killed the mailman
    >>
    >>98879558
The Fantasic Four specifically don't really fuck with criminals though. They mostly deal with scientific adventures and the grander kind of villain. But for crime fighters having a public ID makes no sense.

its also ignoring the fact that plenty of supervillains are violent criminals. they shouldn't be intimidated by the idea of heroes that kill, considering they already have to deal with other violent supervillains and the police who are willing to kill.
    >>
    >>98879506
    >you think the cartel isn't going to chop up the family of a superhero the second they find out their real name?
Kidnapping seems more rational. Killing seems like a good way to get a superpowered hero to reconsider his stance on murdering all of your associates and turning your buildings into rubble.

probably the definition of "your funeral" should 2 random henchmen in the bad guy bar suggest a frontal assault on stark enterprises
the "iron man is starks bodyguard" was always a bit flimsy and relied on drone gimmicks to maintain its plausibility

    >captain america
he conveniently lost most of his friends and family in the intervening years since he was frozen, and the further real life progresses, the less realistic an attack on his friends will be
and even with a public identity, he keeps enough of a low profile that people cant recognize him on the street

    >thor
after retconning dr donald blake away, all of his friends are immortal asgardians or other superheroes

he doesnt have a secret identity, but he also doesnt really have a private life either
so there really isnt a point to trying to jump him in his own house when he eats breakfast as a superhero in his own hideout and spends his free time practicing his own magic

its mostly street level heroes like spider-man and daredevil who have kept their identities into modern days, and even then they have about 1000 people who are aware of their secret identities anyways, so everyone who matters to the story already knows

Villains usually have one of the following as motivation

    1. I wanna get money
    2. grr the guy/company/youth group that gave me my powers did so by shooting me with/pushing me into a weird science thing and I want revenge! and i'll kill anyone who gets in my way

Do you all prefer simulationist games that try and chase the comics and what the comics are doing like oh these are character types based on what the big two created and replicate it like superhero archetypes the big two set up for decades or, this is how stories about mutants are done in Marvel? or This is how DC does X or Y thing? or more here's the rules for a supers game go do what you want, make your own world, your own setting, your own rules and play with your characters however you want? I'm more towards the latter. I don't want to recreate the comics and would rather do my own thing, just give me the rules to.

I always hated playing in pre-existing universes like Marvel or DC it feels constraining and boring, especially when it already has it's own heroes and villains, like running around Gotham not running into Batman raised the questions why and how they haven't and you already know the villains and so many times you can beat up on the Joker. It gets boring rather than play in either a rpg setting made for players to have their adventures in (Champions Millennium City for example) and gives them the space to or just playing with a original setting and original location either made up or based in a real city. the way i see it is why limit yourself and get stuck in the tedious pre-existing setting with pre-existing characters and get bored.
    >>
    >>98879506
Lack of secret identities can be done. The whole convention of secret identities is more of a comic convention to create drama with characters that are one dimensional, lazy embodiments of a ideal with no wants needs, desires or personality. It can be done see Wild Cards novels by GRR Martin and co, see The 4400, Heroes. You just have to make them people with wants, needs, desires, and personalities of their own instead of shorthand "weaknesses" that only sometimes apply, quirks as personality, external conflicts or other lazy storytelling endemic to superhero stories. I mean it is a roleplaying game, people forget the roleplaying part is more than just i'm Superstrong man i get up and punch bad guy and give a speech about morals, you're embodying playing a character the same way someone playing Julius Caesar or Willy Loman. Just because it's a superhero rpg campaign based on superhero media doesn't mean it has to be shallow.

Yeah let me just create a random villain that doesn't exist to put into a pre-existing universe like DC's Gotham City. That is exactly part of the problem with what i said about using a pre-existing universe. It wouldn't be one in one created completely from scratch or like my example of Millennium city is built to accommodate any number of villains or original villains. What part of that wasn't clear enough to you after reading what i said?
    >>
At that point you're no longer playing in Marvel Universe or the DC Universe but someone's version of it once you start changing things, removing or adding things or characters. At which point you might as well just make your own setting and own universe instead of playing in a setting constrained by being a pre-existing setting based off a published setting meant for another medium (comics). This is why i don't use Marvel/DC etc rpgs. It creates too much of a hassle that isn't worth dealing with besides the already pre-existing constraints working either adding original PCs or villain NPCs into it and make it work with a per-existing setting with per-existing characters.

marvel stuffing every superhero into new york is arguably its main appeal to begin with, so you are expected to cross paths with a named hero at some point in time
dropping in your own OC hero is basically the same impact as any of the 50 D-listers already running around new york, to the point that some of them have moved to new jeresy
    >>
    >>98902394
Except in a rpg where the players are the most important people in the story/setting it isn't the same as having a character added to a city like it is in the comic with editors and writers just doing it. These are characters who are the focus of the story of the players that they have to embody and roleplay as in a shared universe. It's not the same as handwaving a why The Avengers just kick the crap out of the kingpin and haul him to prison or wipe out all the vampires lurking in the shadows instead of leaving it to Blade. You play as these characters and run around the setting you're going to start catching on and asking questions.
    >>
    >>98902394
With players in rpgs you gotta maintain the internal consistency you don't get from comics where you're a passive reader and writers can handwave why you don't get x character and y bumping into each other.

your players can perfectly understand that they get called in when all the A-listers arent around, or they get called in by daredevil to sub for him specifically

    >The whole convention of secret identities is more of a comic convention to create drama with characters that are one dimensional

Vigilantism is, in fact, extremely illegal anon. Going around and breaking the law under your own name is a good way to get arrested. So not only would the criminals and villains know who you are, congratulations now the entire law enforcement community, both local, state and federal, knows who you are and they can and will arrest you for acts of public violence among other numerous crimes.

Secret identities actually preserve the reality of the setting instead of turning it into a game of scifi demigods who do what they want, when they want.
    >>
    >>98903437
You sound like one of those annoying fuckers who run WoD games and get annoyed the second something potentially violates the 'meta-canon'. The second you have players who have the ability to affect the status quo of a setting, you are essentially playing fanfiction. The second you remove the players' ability to affect the status quo, you're no longer allowing them to play a roleplaying game.

I suggest you go write a book instead.
    >>
    >>98903437
    >but how many times is going to be that 1% of the time were he's in Tahiti.
thats just the anthropic principle at play
the players fighting kingpin does not mean that daredevil does not fight kingpin, it just means that you were called in because this is one of those moments that daredevil wasnt available

this is genuinely just playing the comic book RPG as if it was a comic book, fighting other peoples villains is a common occurence
if the players ever ask why they have to be the ones to fight kingpin and not daredevil, then thats your cue to just use the editors caption box and say "go read issue number XYZ to know why daredevil isnt here at the momemt" and they will understand immediately

and obviously, you arent going to just keep slapping kingpin in front of your characters every session unless they really, really like the guy
you can maintain believability by just rotating the supervillains every session, the supervillain to superhero ratio in any given comic book universe is lopsided towards the villains, you dont really need a special reason as to why the A-listers arent able to catch every single one of them and thus leaving space for the players to step in

Those characters weren't vigilantes running around stopping every crime they could find to where they had to wear masks. You're trying to conflate comic book crimefighting with stories about superpowers where the first thing they do is engage in vigilantism and stop crimes.
    >>
    >>98903438
    >Vigilantism is, in fact, extremely illegal anon
and marvel created the avengers charter to handwave it away, with the avengers answering directly to the UN and are empowered to pursue super criminals across country lines of UN constituent nations and are officially able to apprehend criminals and turn them over to law enforcement

    >Secret identities actually preserve the reality of the setting instead of turning it into a game of scifi demigods who do what they want, when they want.

    >Why have a costume and a codename if there's no effort to protect the identity of the person underneath it
    because its cool
captain america has no secret identity but still goes by his name for symbolic purposes
the hulk has no secret identity, but still goes by hulk because its a useful way to identify his split personality
iron man is just genuinely eccentric enough to go around calling himself iron man, and in any case he officially named his suit the iron man suit so theres a valid reason to refer to him by his codename
thor is literally just named thor
the wasp is in-universe just playful and hip with it, she likes being called the wasp because she thinks its cool
there are as many reasons for public heroes to still go by their codename as there are public identity heroes
sometimes its just straight up a case of being named by the media, like the unabomber but for heroes and thus they are codenamed whether they want to or not

    >And are the villains really -that- toothless in your eyes that there is no threat to the heroes
none of the F4s villains would ever think to go after the mailman because it would literally serve no purpose
no one attacks the X-mansion unless they are city-level threats because the X-men live there and would kick anyones ass
no one attacks the sanctom sanctorum for the same reason, its magically protected

but its also pretty common to just let the expected drama play out

iron man was already unmasked before the MCU, and iron man already named his suit "the iron man" as a model name

Wow, you are insufferable. The of epitome capeshit. Maybe I need a new word for this subtype of capeshit. I vote for "spandexshit".

That specific example is a atsrating point for doing other things with the genre outside of it's already existing dogmatic masks, capes and spandex the same boring way it's always been done. Those examples are examples or even starting points of what can be done with the genre.

In mediums that are passive, movies, tv shows and comics. A rpg and rpg group is different than reading a comic or watching a movie/tv show balancing between the source material, appeal to fans and mass appeal of a general audience.

in what way, considering all the counter-examples in the Marvel Universe alone, is this a 'dogma of the genre'.

Am I insufferable or are you just poorly read and won't admit you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the super hero genre? You seem like someone with a strong opinion on mecha but has only seen evangelion and gundam.

RPG players would want to lean even more heavily into the more pulpy elements of superheroes

and, lets say for the sake of the argument someone does want to play as john from the mailroom
he absolutely can, he will just exist next to 3 other players who want to play a mix of silver, bronze, and cinema age superheroes who all lean into the zany themeing
in which case, john from the mail room is essentially playing the same theme as everyone else, he is just based off 2000s era "not a superhero" to everyone elses 70s, 80s, and 90s themes

So it's more original for guys with superpowers to run around in jeans and t-shirts?

Samefag, this board is so slow any relatively close post is obvious to see.
Suddenly switching up your style by typing in lowercase, or forgoing punctuation doesn't make you invisible.
I clocked you because both your posts ended with similes. You keep using them at the end of your posts. You're both predictable and retarded.

depends on the group, i'm blessed to have a much more adventurous group that are more open minded to doing other things with the genre rather than following along with the comics. It also goes with the talk beforehand of the campaign between the players and GM and player expectations etc rather than throwing players into let's say a capes, spandex and masks world where they are bored and want something else. That is essentially session zero.
    >>98903656
Where because i still see them sticking to the enforced cliches even in Marvel that you mentioned, it becomes dogma when it becomes enforced on a genre like what that anon was implying that it's not superheroes unless it plays by those tropes and cliches forced on it and it would otherwise either be urban fantasy or that you shouldn't engage with it and "go write a novel". how is that not dogma of the genre?

It exploded every other week in the 90s and 2000s
Lots of based anti muti protests too.

Gurps, Icons, Palladium, Savage worlds, Mutants & Masterminds, Prowlers & Paragons, reskin 5e lol, Sentinel Comics, a bunch of Marvel stuff >>98857424, DC one, there's a large amount of options here.

IIRC, the first time it happened was with juggernaut
and the X-men put up a pretty good fight, but juggernaut breaks into the mansion anyways because he is juggernaut
    >>
    >>98905884
as an addendum, the X-men still had secret identities at this time
juggernaut just knew where they lived because he was prof Xs stepbrother

Piggybacking off this thread since I don't see any other superhero thread in the catalog.

Using Heroes Unlimited/Heroes of the Megaverse, with four superpowers to pick from is there any better combination than

    >Indestructibility (Rifter 12, can't be damaged, doesn't eat or breathe)
    >Master Psionics (Gain all super psionic powers & a large handful of others)
    >Master Spellcaster (Gain a ton of spells & spellpower)
    >Dimensional Room (Access a small room through a portal you conjure, that only you & those you allow to enter)

I figure this gives you access to the widest possible toolkit & removes 90% of danger to your character (you're still vulnerable to illusions, mind control, biomanipulation etc)
