I feel disappointed in this thread, but I can't quite explain why. There are some very classic ships here, after all. I suppose it's because flying office buildings. Simple boxes with engines. Maybe a few embellishments here and there, but nothing that really takes advantage of the lacking need for aerodynamics in space.

Sort of related question. If anyone has any inspiration that'd fit this:

In my setting there's a sort of liminal subspace called the Veil and containing a lattice that wraps around the world, it's kind of a sunless skies or dEAD gODS style of unconstructed potential as a scaffolding for reality. Tech is pulpy 1940s with some fantasy tropes and they graduated to airship.

Would be cool to have a Veil ship. They have the equivalent of lasers and such. Any ideas that would be similar to airships but metal and weird?

I think when most people think of spaceships they think of warmachines but in space with lots of guns to destroy other spaceships.
I think O'Neill Cylinders count as spaceships. I also know that some people may look at the vast sizes of those things and perhaps classify them as "artificial planets" due to how big they are.
But I think they're just space ships that act as massive habitats for lots of citizens aboard them.

It always had VTOL capability from the rocket thrusters on the bottom. In fact, they're the main engines when it's in space, otherwise the gravity wouldn't work properly. The big engines on the wings are massive, air-breathing fusion powered turbojets it uses for forward thrust in atmosphere. The video games just depict it flying around in space like a plane with the afterburners constantly firing out the back is because it looks cool.

The belly transit thrusters only allow it to vtol on small objects like airless moons, large vessels, and asteroids.
It can use them to shorten its needed landing strip, but it really shouldn't, it's the price of 20 atlases, not worth risking that in a crash under pretty much any circumstance.
One can also stall an aerodyne, and let it belly flop a height 1 crash, this effectively destroys the vessel and cargo, but if done over water, the repairs are pretty trivial, given a recovery can be conducted and one has a few days before any fighting starts.
The video games use them due to being iconic, but the Confederate is a spheroid that they could have used in the same method, although it is uncommon.
These operations are what the Union is for, (although just like the leopard, it is VERY vulnerable to getting shot down while touching down or lifting off, and should not be close enough to combat to risk that), a union with only 4 mechbays would also have a game-appropriate amount of volume for cargo

A more apt comparison might have been the ISS having maneuvering thrusters (same as a number of satellites) but not being ships, though that, like most of your post, seems to miss the point that anon was talking about exotic shapes being possible in space. Like the old saying, "All these flavors yet you choose to make your scifi spaceship a gunmetal gray box with some engines tacked on."

Personally my favorite gunmetal gray box in space is the USS Sulaco. Big ol' box where someone kitbashed a bunch of knives on the front. And as for oil rigs, nothing says fun in space like the USCSS Nostromo. You might have trouble spotting it in the pic, though. Most of that image is the big ass refinery it's TOWING BETWEEN STAR SYSTEMS. The Nostromo itself is relatively tiny.

I guess that's the fun thing about space people sometimes overlook. Outside of a gravity well you don't really need a drive with serious heft to move an object. Any force applied can move it, and small force applied consistently over time can build up to phenomenal speed. A lot of ion drive proposals get by with slow and steady winning the race, as opposed to exploding a nuke behind your ship to go straight to plaid.

And, hell, while we're talking about space drives and the Alien franchise, what the fuck is up with the newer Alien stuff saying they don't have FTL drives? I feel like some idiot saw that they use the ol' freezerino and decided this meant they don't have FTL. Meanwhile the Nostromo was detoured to Zeta Reticuli, roughly 40 ly from Earth, yet still expected to get back to Earth in 10 months. How the fuck is that possible without FTL? Ripley could have never made it back before her kid dropped dead from old age without it. It's a minor point but it grinds my gears.

They must have some type of FTL, just not a Star Trek warp drive or Star Wars hyperdrive.

The weird thing is it's come up multiple times in different productions. Alien Earth mentions it, but then so does Predator Badlands. The half an android chick asks the Pred if its species has cracked FTL because humans haven't figured it out yet. Amusingly that film takes place the furthest in the future, after Alien Resurrection. This means multiple writers, directors, producers, have failed to catch on. And it's such a silly mistake to make.

Like you said, with such long duration in travel it still makes sense to go into stasis. Less boredom, less use of resources, but, yeah, the RPG also states that FTL can make you crazy. Neurological Distortion Disorder, or NDD. Synthetics, whoops, I mean Artificial Persons are immune, naturally, which is why they can remain awake to maintain the ship.

Art about a ringworld just being a city is a niche, and they're always as big as the Halo rings in size

I mean, you could say the ring is broken up into districts, with one district being the city, another an industrial district, and an entire district for the sole purpose of being a wild land for fauna and "natural" landmarks for folk wishing to do some hiking, camping, or big game hunting

That said, I did found this artwork; is this the sort of style you're looking for?

    >I thikn they just didn't care because it really didn't hurt the story they were trying to tell, and having a 5 mionute infodump in a movie will just bore the normies.
I get that more for why it was never brought up in the earlier movies how they travel. The problem is the new films ARE bringing up FTL and acting like they don't have it, which is just weird and nonsensical. If they kept not bringing it up that's fine. If they bring it up to say they don't have it, when it contradicts the previous plots which don't work without FTL, that's just idiotic.

I mean Alien Earth alone has a plot that active at the same time the Nostromo is doing their fatal last run somehow traveled between multiple worlds to acquire exotic (hostile) alien species (including the Xenomorph) and while it's said they've been away from Earth for many decades sub-FTL speeds it would be centuries, if not millennia, to complete such a run.

The average joe probably doesn't get the issue, but I see that more as a sad statement on how far education and critical thinking has fallen that even scifi enjoyers don't get this basic shit.
    >>
    >>98788992
If you're talking about Alien, I'll point out how Ridley Scott refuses to stop injecting himself into the process, to the point that it's said fucked over the sequel to Alien Romulus. Romulus was well received and Fede Álvarez is a hot commodity in horror flicks right now. But Scotty felt that Romulus was just "ok" and the franchise was in desperate need of his return to save it again. Sure, thanks, Mister Prometheus, you fucking hack. Covenant wasn't any better.

However since this is /tg/ canon should matter even less than usual. I personally haven't run the new Alien RPG and I'm mostly aware of it from the threads that pop up from time to time (the cinematic approach to the game story structure intrigues me, though it's not the only one to use that kind of gimmick). The RPG has FTL, I'm not changing that to fit whatever the new shit is doing. If the RPG explicitly lacked FTL I'd say fuck that and still have FTL, because otherwise none of it makes sense. But being strict with canon is silly. Everything is just a toolbox to use.

Alien Earth is watchable, but that's my opinion. It's not great, and because it's being worked on by Noah Hawley it's got his classic years long delay between seasons that essentially kills any hype (again in my opinion).

Some of the things it adds to the franchise I hate. Lack of FTL makes no sense, but the thread's already been over that. What I really hate is the series decided to focus on real-worldification. They declared that nations no longer really exists and instead only a few major corporations are running the show with the old nations of the world split between them into corporate controlled territories. Old school Alien and Aliens certainly focused heavily on corporations, true, but the first film is from 1979, entering the 80s. The era when multi-national corporations were getting so powerful it was common to fear them taking over (which arguably they done). No nations, though, means no United Americas, no Three World Empire, no Union of Progressive Peoples. Arguably all artifacts of the 80s cold war/Japan as a high tech innovative powerhouse. I still miss them and I'm actually a bit pissed they've been abandoned rather than explored. The 3WE and UPP especially have needed some TLC for ages (my opinion running rampant). I don't even know how the USCM makes any sense under a corporate owned Earth.

However some of the new alien entities are interesting. All essentially nasty predators, some worse than others. Any new non-Xenomorph alien to add to games is appreciated. They're probably a bit generic overall. A mobile murder plant (more or less), some giant ticks, giant flies that spit acid to melt down metal into a drinkable slurry (lethal to synthetics). The star is definitely the goddamn eyeball monster. Highly mobile eyeball squid thing that displaces an organisms eye and moves into the socket, taking over the nervous system. Stated as highly intelligent, potentially to human levels. Has a weird sense of humor, too.

O'Neil Cylinders are just cylinder containers with engines tacked on. Not really any different if you decide to make a rectangle with the edges rounded off. The only coolness about them is the theoretical insides but even that is an artistic representation.

Real space looks like an endless black abyss so the cylinder loses the appeal. (Source: William Shatner)

That's not entirely true, even in EU it's implied that Corellia was artifical and was moved into it's orbit with massive engines under it's crust. There's a vague implication that it was secretly earth I think at one point? Hence why Han knows what a Falcon is. And hell.
    >>
    >>98796685
It wasn't Earth, it was settled by refugees from Earth. There was some book that tried to tie all of George Lucas' work together where a bunch of people from the dystopia future of THX-1138 stole a rocket ship and flew it into a wormhole to another galaxy, becoming the ancestors of Star Wars' humans. One of them is the great grandson of Bob Falfa from American Graffiti, which is why Han Solo looks just like him.

Could be one of those toilets that has a sink built in to top of the cistern
still nothing to bathe with though, could be a sonic shower in the bedroom chair like in star trek although even in star trek I believe they were self contained rooms
it could be the trips it takes are only ever a day or 2 long so it doesn't need any bathing facilities but then in that case you would probably only have a 2 maybe 3 person crew, could need co pilot ready at all times to man weapons maybe (I was gonna say 4 was also odd considering only 1 bed but it says it's a bunk bed)

The real predictions are the fact that nearly every single specimen has escaped at least once. In fact the company that wanted to steal them from Weyland Yutani had the Weyland ship sabotaged to crash in his corporate territory. He just sort of hoped everything wouldn't arrive as chunky salsa (on fire and spread across half a continent) or wouldn't escape and unleash an uncontrolled infestation. Because being Alien Earth they actually brought the ungodly invasive ultra hostile species to the ol' homeworld instead of some cozy remote research outpost with twelve people who are about to get the most out of their life insurance policies (or would if they hadn't neglected to notice the ultra fine print about Act of Alien Explosive Impregnation/Dismemberment in their contracts).

I'm not kidding about the escapes, either. Weyland sprung for cheap non-reinforced glass specimen containers that shatter the instant they fall off of a tabletop or shelf, as well as an alarming lack of alarms for when containers fail to lock back into secure storage. They do have some, set to go off hours after the wee murder beasties have scarpered.

I'll say this, however, Shipbreaker did make me realize just how much space there is inside a ship, but outside the walkable interior.
You could hide plenty of hostile alien shit between the inner and outer hulls, especially on larger ships, then have it punch through the wall and pour in, seemingly out of nowhere.

Not every games are meant to have top-level writing, and Shipbreaker gameplay is worth its price.
Yes it shouldn't have bothered with a plot (even if the final job shifting the rule upside down is fun), but the criticism were mostly culture warrior who'd use anything as a pretext. Alien? Men in Black? Terminator? If those came out today they'd practice 1984 newspeak, call them woke to then push whatever is the opposite as good by elimination.

I think I know where he is coming from. HW2 was an absolute rush job in the end cause they had to remake the game from scratch essentially cause they couldn't get shit to work. In the process it killed a lot of world building they had been trying to get done for HW and HWC and DoK took all the bad plot parts from HW2 and dialed them up to 11.

    Still neat aesthetics though.

I'm the one who posted it and I agree.

That said, a Lunar battlefield would lead to surprising concept.
Artillery would obviously rule as a god. But so would counter-artillery and with future technology you might actually intercept a shell mid-vacuum.
You wouldn't really need tracked vehicle, they would actually lack grip and flip if they try to turn before stopping themselves. You'd prefer vehicles that are capable of controlling their clearance, can control their attitudes quickly, and move sideway basically mecha

As for gunship, while hovering would be plain inefficient, you could use a vehicle meant to orbit at extremely low altitude, change trajectory, and shoot a missile which would impact a target at orbital speed.
Thanks to the low gravity, you are also inclined to make combat vehicle that get in position quickly as sub-orbital artillery won't be kind to slow crawling vehicles.
The only place to be save would be near infrastructure both side want to protect.

NTA but putting Karen Sjett at the center of the narrative as some sort of ascended cybernetic goddess - and, by extension, making her ancestor similarly integral to the discovery and reclamation of the hyperspace core - ruined the setting's potential to tell interesting stories about people just trying to survive in a hostile universe full of wonders and horrors from precursor races long since died out. Instead it's all Sjetts all the way down, and the reveal of another Sjett story in Homeworld 3 is exactly why I skipped it. Added bonus for our social justice warriors, making Sjett the star of Homeworld 2 was an early example of the fetishization of the powerful girlboss trope made even worse by the comparison to Cataclysm which shows what a post-Hiigara story could have been if only we weren't hung up on hers.
    >>
    >>98865040
    >at the center of the narrative
    >Was she even that important?
Haven't replayed since the remaster but I remember her being related to the story only so far as she's central command and the voice on your coms/narration sometimes.
She walks out at the end which is just dumb if you know, but that's about it for complains on Kareen really.

As for the forgettable sjett in Deserts, I had figured it was just a case of sjeet being a Kith.
Every explorer is sjett like every asshole is soban but they're unrelated > every village having some guy named smith
3 was retarded to anyone with eyes from the trailer only, it's not worth discussing or considering

That's precisely the point, she wasn't that important in the original game. The entirety of her backstory was contained in the game's manual, otherwise Fleet Command was as important as a character as Fleet Intelligence - they're just voices providing context for the story of the six hundred thousand surviving Kharak evacuees. It's interesting lore that S'jet was the cyberneticist responsible for designing the Mothership's core systems but it had no bearing on the campaign or any of the missions.

Fast forward to Homeworld 2 and she's on the cover of the fucking box, and the act of interfacing herself with the Mothership's systems has inexplicably made her immortal kindred to the similarly "unbound" Bentusi, and a figure of prophecy because the nearly unique farjump drive that the original exiles somehow smuggled off of Hiigara despite the fact that they had just lost a war against the Taiidan Empire and if they were known to possess one of only three religiously significant progenitor hyperdrives in the galaxy they never would have been permitted to slink away with it after being expelled from their own homeworld.

Notably, none of the writers for Homeworld are credited for Homeworld 2.

I don't know what the fuck the plot of Homeworld 3 and I don't care. Call me a chud if you must but I don't need four fucking games about the bitch and her extended family all being the Girl Who's the Key to Everything.

No. We'd rather shut down the game and have Steam delete it from the computer of everyone who purchased MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, than stoop to allowing use of a patently stupid design like the Union. How do you lads feel about the LoGH DNT reboot ship designs?

Uniformly awful for both sides. The Imperial ships look like they were designed by aliens - the transparent hulls look like shit and the ventral mounted bridges are an affront to my sensibilities. For the FPA, everything is crammed into the first 1/3rd of the ship - bridge, weapons, and engines, with nothing of any particular note in the rear portions. There's not a single design across the whole remake that holds a candle to the OVA's ships.

Military procurement and the assumption that everywhere that needs to be invaded will at least have a highway nearby. Look at the Buccaneer dropship, also aerodyne, also needs a 30 meter by 1km long landing strip, almost became a Starleague standard dropship.

Aerodynes have one major advantage over Spheroid dropships, they don't automatically crash if hit by anything during their landing phase.

    >>
    >>98904796
I mean a well animated remake could be done, but I see your point.
I did enjoy the LoGH manga (the one that finished) despite the changes. The ships were kept mostly the same, but I swear they might be 3D renderings in manga shading to save time.
It made me wonder if the LoGH ships aren't that hard to 3D sculpt to make into STLs and hopefully find a boardgame or spaceship wargame that actually allows for printed LoGH ships to be used and fight how they did in the OVA.
I know an LoGH boardgame exists. I'm just not sure if it is good and if there are better games that work.

To be fair, they did build it, then decided it had fundamental problem and restarted it from scratch.
The only thing that cannot be understood is why no other studio saw the money to be made and decided to make a Space game without the most complicated features.

I mean, actually good space game, not Effort:Dangerous procedural crap, or slapping space combat minigame in a Fallout.
