Tonight's listen:Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Are You One of Jay's Kids? The Complete Bizarre Sessions 1990-1994This nigga was fucking terrifying. Hawkins recorded three albums for the recently-revived Bizarre Records in the early 90's, all of which are collected on this two-disc set along with unreleased material. While Zappa was no longer involved with the label, he'd no doubt have approved of this signing. The shock-shouter seemed to give even less of a damn than usual on these sessions, resulting in some of his most demented work. The good: A bunch of amusing innuendo-laden originals and three of the finest Tom Waits interpretations ever. The bad: Some comparatively tepid straight blues numbers and an awful-as-it-sounds new jack swing version of his signature song "I Put a Spell On You". The ugly: All of it. Not the best place to start with Screamin' Jay, but fans of his classic stuff ought to enjoy at least some of this.Bonus fact: This compilation's title refers to Hawkins' claim that he fathered as many as 75 children, of whom at least 36 are confirmed his.6.5/10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIWj00PeCVAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=846FUdSjvRM
