>Helen Ward sang on "The Glory of Love" and "Goody Goody", two major 1936 hits that made the Benny Goodman band into one of the biggest touring music acts in America. She was the daughter of Austrian Jewish immigrants, born in New York City in 1913 but as was commonplace with singers in this era claimed to younger, shaving about 5 years off her real age. Ward and Goodman dated for a time but ultimately she married Albert Marx, a wealthy jeweler and jazz patron--Goodman was not known for being an especially personable or easy to like individual, and when Ward told him of her engagement to Marx he threw a restaurant menu at her face. Goodman was not a fan of singers in general and liked to consider his band an instrumental act, but he seemed to especially dislike male singers and consistently found fault with their performances--many songs he intended to go to a male vocalist he gave to Ward instead.>Ward left the band at the end of 1936 and gave up touring but continued to record with various groups. She divorced Marx in 1942 and tried to return to touring but an attempted contract with the Harry James Orchestra fell through. Ward was then mostly retired from performing but would make occasional recordings in the postwar years and began singing in nightclubs in the late '70s. She died in 1998 at age 84.
