Metallica basically closed the book on the genre by 1990 or so. After that, what was left? They could reinvent their sound, try new things. Instead, they went the crossover route. They did a million crossovers with a million horrible popular artists, one worse than the next. Ice Cube would be far from the worst one they've done, but would be totally on brand.
