>>131987459Most people will recommend you start with Fake Train off the strength of Valentine Card/Kantina/Were, Are, and Was or Is, but I actually recommend New Plastic Ideas first. It's the best sequenced and paced album in their discography, and one that reveals its depth to you as it progresses on. >>131988557Witchypoo had a lot of rotating members and was Slim Moon's project, but fair point - Sara's on a good bit of it. I haven't explored Irving Klaw Trio or RedRumsey enough to recommend, and Household Gods falls under the same umbrella as Nocturnal Habits to me.I suppose this thread is to release my anxieties about them never touring again. The initial intent was to honor the grief around Vern (hence the flowers tossed out at the end of each show?), then they started playing full album shows (NPI/TFoW) with some hints towards revisiting Challenge/Leaves material, with Sonata for Loudspeakers, Scarlette, Summer Freeze, and Look a Ghost making the rotation at certain shows.Sara seems to be playing one-off shows around the PNW with Ruminants, which includes Sam Coomes from Quasi. Unwound was essentially his first band (Giant Henry is just pre-teen Unwound). Justin liked the weird stuff, Vern was into the classics. Yet his basslines end up absolutely carrying the melody and the rhythm of the majority of their catalog. with complete intuition (childhood piano lessons notwithstanding). When he played for Blonde Redhead on Fake Can Be Just As Good: >“We had some sort of part written, but he just did his own thing,” Kazu Makino remembered about the session. “I remember him saying, ‘God, you guys make the weirdest music, but once you’re in it, it’s the simplest thing. You don’t even need all the strings.’ And I remember he ripped the strings off his bass. Like, oh these are getting in the way – just ripped them.”>>131995970>>131997306...and after all that Vern praise, I forgot Long Hind Legs. random memory at soundcheck for them: they were onstage for last minute checks, Sara hitting snare and kick, vocal checks... my friend and I gave thumbs up in the air or whatever (as if the engineer gave a fuck). When it got to Jared's bass, we both started jumping with our index fingers up as high as we could and it got a laugh outta Jared. Couple minutes later some girl screams "We love you Saraaa!" which, after her cancer diagnosis going public, got a huge cheer out of the crowd. They're in the running for my favorite band, my band is gonna tour the northwest and we learned December and Envelope for it. The consistency of quality in their discography is super uncommon for a band that stuck together for such a long time, especially since they played with so many styles and influences. I guess the constant live playing and no changes in lineup allowed them to excel at pretty much everything they tried. Justin was so good at writing "hooks" on his guitar that sit well on the rhythm section (corpse pose, usual dosage, chorus in December, the harmonics on kantina). i think the catchiness of the band is often in these parts instead of the vocals, which are mixed quieter and often sound more like they're punctuating the instruments

>>132007799Check out every US Maple even purple on time is good with the different drummer.Acre Thrills is my favorite.Yeah oh yeah, Open A Rose.
>>132007858This was inside a backroom of Capitol Theater. Floor to ceiling, covered in posters from that era. Incredibly grateful that Rainy Day's manager made a call to someone with the key to the theater that day.Two years later, these posters were taken down from this room and rearranged to cover much of the interior of Capitol Theater.
You also need to check out the Aadam Jacobs project on archive.Thousands of live performances from bands of this scene, all taped by him in chicago.https://archive.org/search?tab=all&query=aadam+jacobs&sort=-publicdate
>>132007935The oft-touted Lucky 7 food store, in front of the Lucky 7 house (remodeled to be a dentist's office). When I asked the cashier about the Lucky 7 house, he said something to the effect of "all that shit's gone now, man". I ended up misidentifying a demolished lot as the Lucky 7 house's remains.
>>132007938There's also a guy who has a Spotify of stuff that was played on college radio throughout the 80s and 90sLots to discover.https://open.spotify.com/user/o1fvr3cd8f47h2fxhckf937es
>>132007968Thekla, across the street from Capitol Theater - the venue where Unwound played their April Fools 2002 show. It changed ownership a few times (not long after that show), and in the 2020s seems to serve as unpurchased, unoccupied space.>>132007899>>132007938Will do. Aadam Jacobs is a total hero. Imagine lugging 80s/90s era recording equipment onto the Chicago metro every evening. Odd that no Unwound tapes have emerged yet, but there's so many to get through - I saw a snapshot someone took of like 5 tape decks running into recorders at one point.>>132007849>the constant live playing and no changes in lineup allowed them to excel at pretty much everything they triedThey were unafraid to test out newly written songs on the road, and even discussed how difficult it was to play with other projects after their breakup, due to the idiosyncratic nature of how they learned to play by playing together. >SL: Yeah. I had a hard time, after Unwound split up, the experiences I had for a number of years trying to play with other people and having it hammered home over and over again how special Unwound was in the way we created together. I was continually shocked how different it was playing with other people. And in a way, when I started playing with Andrew in Hungry Ghost — not that Hungry Ghost is anything like Unwound musically, but he was coming from a position of essentially turning his back on the musician part of his life for 11 years, not playing with anyone at all. So in a way we were relearning our instruments together, which is part of what made Unwound special, the three of us learning our instruments together and developing individual styles based on each other’s styles.>my band is gonna tour the northwest and we learned December and Envelope for itI wish you luck! I agree re: Jusitn's hooks.Small detail about Envelope, but there's a bass part during the pre-verse not even Jared does anymore.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hORVac211mM&t=134s
>>132008197*Justin's>click on Aadam Jacobs archive>'92-'93 Codeineincredible. This photo was taken from some dive someone did into MagRecOne's photo section. >>132004732That's bs revisionism. Repetition has always been their second most discussed album on here. The cover has been parodied many times. I've not really seen much discussion of Fake Train. Even New Plastic Ideas is better known here. Also unrelated but that armchair historian saying MM needed Melvins to exist of whatever. MM has no relation to Melvins, calling yourself a 'historian' and trying to sniff your own farts doesn't make that somehow true. MM being influenced by Lync to a degree is true, not fucking Melvins though.
>>132008697>armchair historianBut I traveled to Olympia multiple times to do my research. I sat in a Tumwater basement while watching Karp discuss how liberating the weirdness of Melvins was for all the teenagers of the PNW.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwSYMqp8svA&t=578sIssac also tried out for Lync before creating MM. It's on the liner sheet of the TANFC reissue. You seem like you have Melvins hate as an agenda. I really don't care if you dislike them, I'm not totally into them either, but they were progenitors of much of the punk and indie that emerged from the PNW in the 80s and 90s, for better or worse.
Musty and green. What a beautiful place to sit in my armchair.
Where the hell is the Radio Gra sample from?
>>132009200Cursory search says it's a Polish language learning series called "Mówimy po Polsku", and it did come with accompanying background music. I don't think the actual sample is contained in the selections linked below, but "7: Vowel alternations" under "Polski Samogłoski" contains a song with a similar Polish folk style. The voices under Mowimy po Polsku by W. Bisko and S. Karolak are the same recording quality and tone.https://celt.indiana.edu/portal/Polish/archive/advanced.html Might've been something stumbled upon in the MagRecOne studio.I don't think the original sample is going to be uncovered anytime soon, unless an older Polish national happens to be an Unwound fan. Neither the liner notes of LTIY nor What Was Wound give any hints to the source.Maybe a soulseek search of these might yield results.https://www.discogs.com/label/2229841-Komplet-26-Lekcjihttps://www.discogs.com/artist/2131682-Stanis%C5%82aw-Karolak
>>132009401>https://celt.indiana.edu/portal/Polish/archive/advanced.html1:30 into Lesson 1, she says the exact phrase>A co to gra?>Radio>Radio gra, a Kasia słucha>A państwo także słuchająbut it's not the exact same sample (with the male voice response or the backing Polish folk song). It's definitely from this series.
>>132008197Thanks for the info, I'll pass that on to my bassist. In high school I remember getting stoned with my friends and listening to unwound all the time. We went to Seattle to see their reunion show and it was so good, moshed the whole time. Mostly we moved on from each other and I wouldn't want to see them again. Got psychotic from the weed and cant smoke any more. I'm much happier now but sometimes I miss smoking and listening to music with them. Pretty gay
>>132009660>In high school I remember getting stoned with my friends and listening to unwoundFor me, it was freshman year of college that Unwound clicked. Stormy, miserable afternoon in Florida, depressed, stoned, stuck in a subletted room where the ground floor flooded every time it rained. Can't have been too dissimilar to the conditions that created an album like Leaves.>went to Seattle to see their reunion show and it was so goodAmen. I've seen them four times (2023 twice, NPI 2024, TFoW 2025). Tried to record every time and failed in various ways. My rig fell apart during Petals Like Bricks, so I joined the mosh instead.>Mostly we moved on from each other and I wouldn't want to see them againYeah, I've had a few friendships fracture or become distant that came about via Unwound fandom. Weed psychosis sucks, losing friends sucks, but I'm glad you're in a happier state of mind. Here's a live December take if you haven't seen it yet.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPfDeNVE_FY&t=12s
hey unwound guy, you should get into early neurosis. i got a couple of unwound fans into neurosis over the yearshttps://neurosis.bandcamp.com/album/enemy-of-the-sun
>>132009816I'm down.
>>132009772That recording is sick, one of the clearest versions of that song I've heard. Sounds like you got into them in a very fitting environment. Wish I could've caught them on one of those album tours but just glad I got to see them at all. Thanks for the kind words, maybe I'll shill some audio of our covers on the chan if I get a recording.>>132009816Neurosis is awesome, saw them at a festival in 2018 with pig destroyer. Post other recs if you have them, I'd like to get back into them
>>132009816That rocked, hell yeah. >>132007935Tour itinerary on the wall of Capitol Theater. Brutal schedule (NYC to WV in a day?) but look: Rodan, Trumans Water, Drive Like Jehu, Tiger Trap? Vern loved godheadSilo too
>>132007935>>132010617I truly could not fit this all in one frame. Lync with Bastro? Unbelievable
Thrones (Joe Preston solo project) opened, like he did in 2002. That's the dual Sunn, dual cab rig in front of the other amps. And that 8x10 was so beat up, almost rotten looking.
>>131987146I had tickets to see them on Sept 11 2001 never happened and never saw them
Thanks for ruining the nirvana buying unwound beer story
>>132009921>Post other recs if you have them, I'd like to get back into themregarding Neurosis just listen to everything from Souls at Zero to a Sun that never Sets. some of the later albums are okay too but can get too plodding and a bit boring. but heres some more stuff in the similar vein i enjoyhttps://cattlepress.bandcamp.com/album/hordes-to-abolish-the-divinehttps://craw.bandcamp.com/album/bodies-for-strontium-90https://keelhaul.bandcamp.com/album/keelhaul-iialso this, it's been my favorite album for a year now i think you might appreciate ithttps://aerkenbrand.bandcamp.com/album/hedenfarne-ventyrtracks 3 and 7 are decent representations of the sound
>>132010672The show with Arab on Radar at the Middle East? This isn't a joke, I'm pretty sure that was the bill that night.>>132010761Is the alternative (Kurt and co. literally buying booze for Unwound) that much better than what it metaphorically means? >>132010773>Fans of KEELHAUL (with whom CRAW share members), THE JESUS LIZARD, and DAZZLING KILLMEN take note.Awesome. I loved Dazzling Killmen and The Jesus Lizard when they came to my city. I think I had Craw on the backburner and vaguely remember hearing the s/t on YouTube. Skin Graft/AmRep stuff usually hits for me, probably because of the rhythm sections. Some of the stuff out of Mississauga and Ottowa in that time was pretty angular and screamy. I suppose they can be filed under itch relief.https://blueskiesturnblack.bandcamp.com/track/bishophttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bROPMxwlPfo
>>132010912be sure to check out cattle press as well, it's like neurosis condensed

Do any of you anons own this box set? Some of the reviews on Discogs are mixed. As for me, I own 3 out of the 4 Numero Group vinyl box sets:>Kid Is Gone>No Energy >Empiremissing Rat Conspiracy still and the few that are on Discogs marketplace are at diabolical prices. But one thing that the vinyl boxes seem to be missing is the DVD material on this CD box set.
