What does /mu/ think of them?
Have you seen them perform live, as their original lineup, 2001 tour iteration, or their reformation?
What are some other bands that have scratched the itch for you?
Did Justin Trosper die an extreme twinkdeath?

You're welcome. The interviews they gave after the 2023 tour basically restate what Rewound discusses, anyway. This one by Sara is a retrospective of her entire history, it's delightful and tragic.

I think Accidents on Purpose is the quintessential unwoundian post-hardcore song.

Most people will recommend you start with Fake Train off the strength of Valentine Card/Kantina/Were, Are, and Was or Is, but I actually recommend New Plastic Ideas first. It's the best sequenced and paced album in their discography, and one that reveals its depth to you as it progresses on. The straightforward post-hardcore and ballad numbers are first up, then they space out with Hexenzsene and Abstraktions, slap you back to earth with All Souls Day, then devastate you with Arboretum and Fiction Friction.

    >>131987517
Nice album pick, but for me it's Petals Like Bricks. I got my shit pushed in by the crowd once that song started up. It's what they're playing in the OP gif.

Witchypoo had a lot of rotating members and was Slim Moon's project, but fair point - Sara's on a good bit of it. I haven't explored Irving Klaw Trio or RedRumsey enough to recommend, and Household Gods falls under the same umbrella as Nocturnal Habits to me.

I suppose this thread is to release my anxieties about them never touring again.
The initial intent was to honor the grief around Vern (hence the flowers tossed out at the end of each show?), then they started playing full album shows (NPI/TFoW) with some hints towards revisiting Challenge/Leaves material, with Sonata for Loudspeakers, Scarlette, Summer Freeze, and Look a Ghost making the rotation at certain shows.

Sara seems to be playing one-off shows around the PNW with Ruminants, which includes Sam Coomes from Quasi. Speculation of the cancelled tour comes from her breast cancer diagnosis, but I'm worried something else might be the case. I hope everyone's health is alright. I swear an internet article about Justin getting sarcoidosis while living in LA post-breakup disappeared.

    >>131995743
Vern just seemed like a true natural at what he did. Unwound was essentially his first band (Giant Henry is just pre-teen Unwound). Justin liked the weird stuff, Vern was into the classics. Yet his basslines end up absolutely carrying the melody and the rhythm of the majority of their catalog. with complete intuition (childhood piano lessons notwithstanding). When he played for Blonde Redhead on Fake Can Be Just As Good:
    >“We had some sort of part written, but he just did his own thing,” Kazu Makino remembered about the session. “I remember him saying, ‘God, you guys make the weirdest music, but once you’re in it, it’s the simplest thing. You don’t even need all the strings.’ And I remember he ripped the strings off his bass. Like, oh these are getting in the way – just ripped them.”

    >>131995970
    >>131997306
...and after all that Vern praise, I forgot Long Hind Legs. I think the Melvins influence can't be overstated enough for both Unwound/Karp, although the doc about Karp in >>131988112 gives it some credence. I got to see Coady drum with Dale last year. They still kill.

Justin's bass lines on Young Ginns are so sick.

random memory at soundcheck for them: they were onstage for last minute checks, Sara hitting snare and kick, vocal checks... my friend and I gave thumbs up in the air or whatever (as if the engineer gave a fuck). When it got to Jared's bass, we both started jumping with our index fingers up as high as we could and it got a laugh outta Jared. Couple minutes later some girl screams "We love you Saraaa!" which, after her cancer diagnosis going public, got a huge cheer out of the crowd. Jared quipped "we love her too" before they kicked off into Entirely Different Matters.
I miss them, and they've only been away for a year. Can't imagine what missing them for two decades was like.

I take it youre not aware that Fake Train was the seminal release mucore wise. Dragnalus was one of those tracks that blew us away on first listen. ! REMINDER TO NOT FALL FOR GENRE PSYOPS LIKE "GRUNGE"

Unwound, Nirvana, Wipers, Modest Mouse, Lync, Karp, Sleater-Kinney, Melvins, Mudhoney and Truly belong together. They are first and foremost "Northwestern Punk/Indie". Don't let normies tell you otherwise.

S-K actually had no bass player.

    >Sleater-Kinney does not have a dedicated bassist because Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein fill the low-end frequency themselves through their distinct guitar styles and tunings.

    >Both Tucker and Brownstein downtune their guitars down one and a half steps to D tuning, which deepens the natural pitch of their instruments. and Tucker often plays a Danelectro baritone guitar to carry heavier, lower frequencies that mimic a bass guitar's register. Brownstein also plays sharp, overlapping guitar lines that weave around Tucker's vocals and rhythm instead of leaving a standard mid-range gap for a bass player to fill.

Shame what happened to Janet though...

I remember you! Glad I helped. In Unwound's case, the bass had strong midrange presence due to how Vern picked - essentially next to the bridge, pinky wrapped around it (pic rel). I'd say Justin/Vern are still easy to parse sonically, though - chalk that up to Minutemen influence. Vern used a Dunlop .88 Nylon pick with a Sunn Coliseum 300 amp head up until the last concerts, where he used a Sunn Concert Bass instead. By that time, Justin had started using a JCM 800. Check Vern out using an overdrive (the only pedal!) during Corpse Pose.

    >Their best album cover
    >Most well-known single (Corpse Pose)
    >Highest fidelity (aside from CFaCS)
    >Lady Elect being beautifully profound and grief-stricken by reiterating the album's theme at its denouement
    >Most overt nods to other genre influences in Unauthorized Autobiography (post-punk) and Sensible (dub)
    >Next Exit - For Your Entertainment being one of their strongest runs, and a closing run at that

It's still NPI for me because it's the best Side B of any album ever, but Repetition presents strong arguments.

Anecdote #2: the day after I saw them play Olympia in 2023, I was really out of it from stuffing a bunch of homemade edibles down before the show (made from unknowably strong cannabutter) and drinking at BroHo afterwards (I made an EXTREMELY shaky introduction to Justin and shook his hand). Made my way to New Moon Co-op Cafe to get some sustenance in, could barely see where I was... and then ran into Brandt and David Wilcox (writer of What Was Wound/1991-2091, who introduced himself as Dave) on the street. Bewildered, hungover me had nothing of substance to ask them.

They're in the running for my favorite band, my band is gonna tour the northwest and we learned December and Envelope for it. The consistency of quality in their discography is super uncommon for a band that stuck together for such a long time, especially since they played with so many styles and influences. I guess the constant live playing and no changes in lineup allowed them to excel at pretty much everything they tried.
Justin was so good at writing "hooks" on his guitar that sit well on the rhythm section (corpse pose, usual dosage, chorus in December, the harmonics on kantina). i think the catchiness of the band is often in these parts instead of the vocals, which are mixed quieter and often sound more like they're punctuating the instruments

Two years later, these posters were taken down from this room and rearranged to cover much of the interior of Capitol Theater.

    >the constant live playing and no changes in lineup allowed them to excel at pretty much everything they tried
They were unafraid to test out newly written songs on the road, and even discussed how difficult it was to play with other projects after their breakup, due to the idiosyncratic nature of how they learned to play by playing together.
    >SL: Yeah. I had a hard time, after Unwound split up, the experiences I had for a number of years trying to play with other people and having it hammered home over and over again how special Unwound was in the way we created together. I was continually shocked how different it was playing with other people. And in a way, when I started playing with Andrew in Hungry Ghost — not that Hungry Ghost is anything like Unwound musically, but he was coming from a position of essentially turning his back on the musician part of his life for 11 years, not playing with anyone at all. So in a way we were relearning our instruments together, which is part of what made Unwound special, the three of us learning our instruments together and developing individual styles based on each other’s styles.
    >my band is gonna tour the northwest and we learned December and Envelope for it

That's bs revisionism. Repetition has always been their second most discussed album on here. The cover has been parodied many times. I've not really seen much discussion of Fake Train. Even New Plastic Ideas is better known here.

Also unrelated but that armchair historian saying MM needed Melvins to exist of whatever. MM has no relation to Melvins, calling yourself a 'historian' and trying to sniff your own farts doesn't make that somehow true. MM being influenced by Lync to a degree is true, not fucking Melvins though.

Issac also tried out for Lync before creating MM. It's on the liner sheet of the TANFC reissue.
You seem like you have Melvins hate as an agenda. I really don't care if you dislike them, I'm not totally into them either, but they were progenitors of much of the punk and indie that emerged from the PNW in the 80s and 90s, for better or worse.

Cursory search says it's a Polish language learning series called "Mówimy po Polsku", and it did come with accompanying background music. I don't think the actual sample is contained in the selections linked below, but "7: Vowel alternations" under "Polski Samogłoski" contains a song with a similar Polish folk style.
The voices under Mowimy po Polsku by W. Bisko and S. Karolak are the same recording quality and tone.
    https://celt.indiana.edu/portal/Polish/archive/advanced.html

Might've been something stumbled upon in the MagRecOne studio.
I don't think the original sample is going to be uncovered anytime soon, unless an older Polish national happens to be an Unwound fan. Neither the liner notes of LTIY nor What Was Wound give any hints to the source.
Maybe a soulseek search of these might yield results.

For me, it was freshman year of college that Unwound clicked. Stormy, miserable afternoon in Florida, depressed, stoned, stuck in a subletted room where the ground floor flooded every time it rained. Can't have been too dissimilar to the conditions that created an album like Leaves.

Do any of you anons own this box set?

Some of the reviews on Discogs are mixed.

As for me, I own 3 out of the 4 Numero Group vinyl box sets:
    >Kid Is Gone
    >No Energy
    >Empire

missing Rat Conspiracy still and the few that are on Discogs marketplace are at diabolical prices.

But one thing that the vinyl boxes seem to be missing is the DVD material on this CD box set.

I picked up a used copy a while ago. I had trouble ripping one of the discs with EAC, and TFoW is stuck in a cheap all-in-one receiver I tried to play it in.
The DVD is just Do Something Exciting, which is up on YouTube.
What Was Wound was my favorite part of it, aside from the music.
