They were contemporaries and when Prince opened for him, Rick was so mad he was getting more popular and a better reception so he stole his synths and used Princes presets on Street Songs (his most successful album) so they sound similar because Rick literally ripped him off and seethed about that tour for the rest of his life and never recovered.

Hendrix grew up poor and never took music lessons. He was drafted into the Army and forced to become a soldier. He got out of the Army and blew his tiny severance pay in 1 night drinking, and took gigs to get by.

    Now Tosin:
    Wealthy parents
Given music lessons from an early age
Technically gifted yet boring and uninspiring
Small fanbase of other rich nerds

Hendrix will live on forever as a cultural icon that pushed the boundaries of guitar playing and opened the way for guitar to lead in rock music

Abasi grew up to poor Nigerian immigrant parents and only attended Musicians Institute for a 1 year crash course to get some basic theory down.
    He's basically completely self-taught.
I agree that the robotic Thumpy Thumpy stuff that he loves to do is soulless sounding, but I guess that's the point since it's all about technique, but many of his solos are really damn great and soulful. Imo he excels in both areas. Compared to the Instagram shredders he sounds way more human yet he can still outshred most of them.

There probably are more skilled guitarists than Hendrix now, especially in genres like tech-death. However, I don't think any of them had the genius Hendrix did. He created a new musical language for guitar that's still being used today, and pretty much all heavy metal owes its existence to Hendrix. Literally - Hendrix is the defining acid rock musician, but the entire "heavy psych" genre was basically bands that were less skilled than Hendrix, but could adopt his techniques, like Blue Cheer, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Captain Beyond. Heavy Psych is the immediate precedent to early heavy metal.

I think people lose sight of how hard it is to come up with new, innovative things like Hendrix. There's a reason he was the first one to do a lot of what he did. Now we take it all for granted, but IMO no Hendrix, no Sabbath.

there is a certain type of virtuosity where you can be technical and speak to the average listener at the same time. I guess what I'm trying to put forward (I'm not the original poster you were replying to) is that you can be technical and express that technicality subtly to people who are not exposed to this style of play. it helps those "sycophants" to reach out and analyze what they listen to and hopefully arrive at a point where this kind of music allows for more exploration.

hes just copying what bass players did 40 years ago. the only problem is that his songs are harmonically and melodically dogshit. this guy is fucking terrible
    >>
What does "best guitarist" mean? Better at playing something complex? Or better at making something someone in particular, or people generally, enjoy?

    >I don't understand why that's a desirable thing.
What's desirable about making art that very few enjoy?
You could very easily have a philosophy that art which more people enjoy is more desirable to make without ever considering the compensation one gets for accomplishing that.
