If we forget all the arguments going back and forth, and just take it so that there's sex imbalance (be it big or small) in Equestrian society, how would (you) make it work socially and culturally?
So it doesn't fall into generic harem fantasy of either super dominant male getting ALL the mares or useless manchild with mommy issues gets his fantasy fulfilled.
So that majority of the ponies won't be left alone. Would it be sort of herds but with Equestrian twist with mare at the helm of the longhouse, with the husband-stallion somewhere there in-between, with this communal family that consists of romantic and platonic pairs of life partners? Could it be bonded mare and stallion pair with possibility of "donation" to close friends?
I really can't imagine anything that doesn't have at least some sort of typical "sexual male fantasy" component somewhere in there.

The nuclear family wouldn't be normal, the norm would certainly be herds because there's no longer anything clamping relationships to a single pair and ponies congregate by default. I think that, because there would be herds, there wouldn't be a single common structure. Based on the princesses, though, I would expect the groups to tend to revolve around a central mare, not a stallion.
I think that the family roles would not be set by gender, but by both gender and the type of mare, and herds would seek a pony to fill that role. For example, a group may prefer structure and favor a mare with an administrative personality, or they may prefer anarchy and collect a group of mares that are individualistic and independently reliable, or a bunch of musicians would form a herd-band, etc. Each group would form accoring to their own preferences, and the ones distant from that shared preference would break off and join another that fits them better.
As a practical matter, their sexual relationships with each other wouldn't be decided by a binary straight/lesbian, but on a range of how lesbian they are or could be with each other, and that would make it harder for a mare who is attracted to masculine traits to get the sex she wants. Here, it bears clarifying that it's the male fantasy part of this that extrapolates that into meaning most ponies are dissatisfied and lonely, even desperate. Most mares can simply prefer more mares and then there's nothing bad about the arrangement. It would also mean that they don't have to lower their standards just to get an organic cock.

I think you would have more cases where intimacy is further distinguished from sex, and there would be a good number of cuddle piles that wouldn't have a stallion in them. Regardless, being a fit mare that can wield a strap on effectively would be valuable more often than not.

In any case, RGRE is a tool for making your story more FiM-like. If the only way you can figure out how to use it to make your story better is to ponify words around the "mare" root, the that's all you can do.

>how would (you) make it work socially and culturally?
What we see in the show is
>mostly monogamy in relationships
>mostly mares
>mostly ponies that don't seem to be married
Obviously there's a bias towards more marriages on screen in side characters because a significant portion of them are the main character's parents.

So what I would do is say: the majority of ponies are mares, and the majority of mares do not get married. Probably almost every stallion does, eventually, and there might be cultural pressure here. But the median mare is a borderline otaku powered by a cutie mark and colorful horse fixations, so the ponies that have children have a lot - possibly over a long time, since ponies aren't on the same strict biological clock as humans/earth mammals.

Some implications
>farm ponies mostly have a son and daughter that stay on the land/marry into other farms, and the rest of the daughters go into the city and the like. Ponies like Apple Bloom and Maud who leave home and become more embroiled in culture are the rule rather than the exception - and this is the same reason why filly AJ was given the chance to be a city pony and had to choose to go back to the farm.
>married couples tend to retire pretty young, like we see with Posey shy (Twilight's parents might be idle rich from the start(?)). Equestria is generally very low cost of living compared to the productivity of ponies, even in desolate conditions with no skilled workers like Our Town, so while they might be living on savings there's also a good chance they're being supported by their adult daughters as soon as they're working because a pony like Fluttershy on has a limited amount of use for money.
There could even be an expectation, for example, that Flurry Heart is going to be the future princess of the Crystal Empire because culturally the expectation is that Cadance is going to retire and just get to enjoy her marriage in peace one she's old enough to take the reins. I think this dovetails very nicely in with a society which triumphs love as one of the highest virtues - most ponies don't find love, but the ones that do are precious and should be encouraged and protected.

>Flurry Heart is going to be the future princess of the Crystal Empire because culturally the expectation
But if having an alicorn progeny is mystical or unsure as it was established, what if Flurry in turn has no alicorn to give the power to? Is she to remarry mortal after mortal and having offspring until she can retire? Or is she going to sing a friendship song and give yet another pair to a mortal to leave and waste her savings on expensive cruises on grand Bahamare archipelago?

But jokes aside, you missed one element here. There seems to be plenty of mare-foal pairings shown in the series. One implication is that they're just wife and child going to the town while husband is doing something else, but we can't be sure. Another implication is that they're single parents, with whatever arrangement there might be, and due to the few number of stallions, I don't think it's divorce.

Another big question you stepped over is that if only married monogamous pairs reproduce, depending on amount of stallions, the brood of foals one mare need to birth is huge to maintain the population level. How do you reckon that works?

6/10. Daring and Caballeron team up to escape a death trap and beat the villain. This one was fine. Nothing to particularly write home about. Definitely had a post-canon air to it, which isn't really a good thing given how shit Daring Doubt was.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/510538/i-lied

5.7/10. Ahuizotl decides Daring Doubt was a shit episode and ignores it. A classic fix fic to a really shit episode. Seems like most Daring fic authors just ignore Daring Doubt completely rather than even bothering trying to fix it. This one had a slight amateurish feel to it, but the bigger problem were the weird plot holes. Most notable being the iron chains that melt in the sun and allow Daring's escape. How many BTUs was Celestia pumping out that day?

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/506926/defeated

3.7/10. Daring has writer's block and has become a sloven fatass as a result. I don't think I've ever read a more "the author is just wearing the character's skin" fic in my life. This Daring bears almost no resemblance to any version of her--canon or otherwise--I've encountered. It really just feels like Skirts ranting about all the unfinished fics he's written and how they've beaten him. Given he stopped logging in two years later, it seems he really was defeated.

>But if having an alicorn progeny is mystical or unsure as it was established, what if Flurry in turn has no alicorn to give the power to?
I'm saying that Cadance having a child/husband makes her the exception and Celestia/Luna and Twilight/Flurry being single forever is the cultural norm. Essentially, Cadance can't hold the job because she's married. This plays into the essential RGR of the setting if you want to introduce those elements. IRL the 'glass ceiling' is essentially the fear that a critical employee will retire into marriage/pregnancy, so you'd be better off training a man who will stay in the company and promoting him. In this Equestria, that would be anypony that gets married, with the gendered element just being that pretty much every stallion is expected to get married while it's the minority of mares. So something like
>not every lovestuck pony is a stallion infact less than half are, but ~every stallion is expected to find love
and fittingly the Princess of Love is the only Princess that gets married.

That's true. The thing is that we don't see larger family units and if it was multiple marriage we'd still expect to see the husband there and more actual groupings, but we neither see multiple marriage nor do we see the husband there, obviously, in those outings where the husband isn't there. I'd lean towards the first implication as the easiest answer here. The stallion is usually the primary caretaker, so on days where he isn't available the mare takes the foal out with her and does something. This could also go together with stallions being homemakers if you want, and the reason the foal is out of the house is that e.g. construction is going on that the stallion is involved with.
>Another big question you stepped over is that if only married monogamous pairs reproduce, depending on amount of stallions, the brood of foals one mare need to birth is huge to maintain the population level. How do you reckon that works?
I addressed that directly. Ponies don't operate on any kind of fixed timeframes. They can just have another 'generation' of foals out of the same marriage after the first set have grown up if there hasn't been a stallion yet. The showrunners certainly considered the possibility of litters but I don't think we really see evidence of a mare with an enormous number of fillies at once, at least not as a standard fixture, so I think they'd still be raising fairly normal (by human standards) numbers of fillies at a time.

The truth is Mayor Mare cut corners with the budget and outsourced the clock tower to a Griffonstone contractor, pocketing the difference.
>>
>>43650408
>The stallion is usually the primary caretaker
I fail to see the logic here, since mare is the one who births the foal and per "run of the mill standard mammalian reproduction" also nurses it. The mare-foal bond is strong, and all of a sudden stallion just takes over. Despite this we virtually see no stallion-foal pairs in the series?

Pony ageing is also bit hazy and all over the place in the series. Ponyville and Granny Smith's age and all that. But if we go by that somewhat accepted concept of horse reproductive window adjusted to human age, pony mares would have mostly fertile and safe reproductive window into their early 50's. It's plausible to wait for 4 to 5 years or even longer between the foals, if for example we go by ratio or 1:3 where basically only 25% of the mares do the reproduction. Given that many families seems to have 1 or 2 foals, many families need to produce more to keep the population stable and we have no idea about the distribution of those families. M6 families average to 2.33 foals per family, when the average needs to be 4 foals per family. If those family sizes are very common as it seems, there needs to be very large families to keep up the population.
>>
>>43650486
You're leaning very heavily on things which aren't part of the show at all. Like I'm sorry but
>run of the mill standard mammalian reproduction
Headcanon. Also you're assigning meaning to nursing (also headcanon) that isn't necessarily that (i.e. is headcanon).
>But if we go by that somewhat accepted concept of horse reproductive window adjusted to human age
Not only headcanon but directly contradicting what we see in the show, alike to "acktually there are as many stallions as there are mares even though we don't see any of them" nonsense.

None of these are valid concerns if what you care about is fidelity to the show/canon.

Are you retarded?
Headcanon isn't true but if it doesn't conflict with canon it can be.
Ponies CAN have earthlike aging for the most part but you have to explain certain exceptions (usually by chalking it up to magic).
Ponies CAN have most of the married stallions as primary caretakers. The only glaring exception to this that comes to mind is Diamond Tiara's family, though I'm sure I'm missing some. It's certainly not enough to disrupt it being a plausible cultural trend though.

If I write a story where Twilight has jam sandwiches for breakfast, that doesn't violate canon nor does it make it true in canon for all stories. Different stories will have different answers. Nor does having Twilight have jam sandwiches mean that she always or even often has jam sandwiches in that story, unless you say she does. What would violate canon is saying that Twilight ALWAYS has jam sandwiches for breakfast, since we see her eating other things for breakfast, unless we introduce it as an element which is new in-universe.

You can't pick apart a story premise for not following your headcanon when it follows actual canon, anon.

There's unfortunately nothing so simple as that. Decades of research on sex inequities have found multiple contributing factors in addition to the one you mentioned: the belief that men are more competent and more intelligent; the perception that women are too emotional; the assumption that women are better suited to nurturing roles like mother or caretaker; and even women's own pessimism about their chances of being promoted.

No, he’s been consistently but slowly updating. I suspect he started on this arc but quickly got dissatisfied with it, and that made him lose motivation and slow down. I think this arc has been weaker than average. This chapter ends it, so I hope he speeds back up.
>>
>>43651868
What's your prediction for when and where the fic ends?
>>
>>43651882
He’s made it to the start of S8, and he needs a few more arcs to finish the rest of the series, so that gives him time. I think his big problem right now is delivering on Radish Root’s cutie mark. I don’t think he’ll really do this, but I’m hoping that Radish marries Light Fantastic during the next arc but she dies during the S8 finale. Then he grieves through most of S9 but gets together with Celestia during the S9 finale. And that’s about where I hope he ends it. Maybe there’s a wedding scene, they finally go into her bedroom, and it ends with a fade to black. If he doesn’t end it with them getting together, I’m going to be disappointed. And if he doesn’t end it when the series ends or soon after, it’s going to turn into aimless slice-of-life, and that’s going to be a different kind of disappointment.
>>
>>43651882
My prediction is it never gets finished like most hie fics that get slowly get updated less frequently over time.
>>
>>43652039

>>
>>43652073
That would be clever, but I don’t think it’s possible at this point. Too many ponies have looked at that cutie mark and said, “Yep, that’s him fucking Celestia.” The idea that literally every pony that has ever looked at his cutie mark has been totally wrong would be a betrayal of the fic’s premise.

Wanted to write 1000 words a day for a 5K+ story this week. Ended up manging only a couple hundred words in half-hour-ish sessions during the week, then today finally forced myself to get out of my house and knocked out the rest of the story in a face in around 2 hours-ish but could really feel myself burning out by the end of it. 2809 words total but going to try to edit and bulk it out a bit to be 3K+ before posting.

I think that's enough for a clopfic that's basically a one note joke. At least I got something done this week. I'm realizing since jumping in last thread this thread has much higher standards than the kind of thing I'm writing. Really appreciate all the comments and advice though!
>>
>>43652397
>bulk it out
Either add good content or don't add anything at all. Adding "bulk" just makes your story worse. Most stories need to be cut if anything.
>>
>>43652472
I feel like my descriptions are too short and bad though. I was writing without wifi so I couldn't do any of my usual thesaurus look ups or referencing other clopfics for inspiration.

How can you tell when a description is too long or too short?

One anon mentioned last thread using two different senses was a good standard. For big climatic moments like actual climaxes in a clopfic I feel like there ought to be more though.
>>
>>43652519
No, for a clopfic, the actual climax is often short and doesn't benefit from being overdescribed. Down that road lies hyper and other unsatisfying things. The buildup is usually the most important, and if you can't improve it more, you can work on the part after.
>>
>>43652554
I don’t think I have ever read a clop fic where the writing of the sex was actually good and not uncomfortable to read at least somewhat.
>>
>>43652519
I've never tried writing clop, but I write other things and occasionally read clop. As a reader, I want to be turned on. It helps to get descriptions of things, but I'd rather hear about how turned on somepony is. A description on its own is bland and even kinda dull:
>Big Mac had a big dick.
As it is, it's too simple. It gives me the start of an image, but it doesn't get to the sexy part. It could even be part of something non-sexy:
>The urologist said, "So how often did you say you get a burning sensation?"
For clop, you need to direct the reader's thoughts toward sexy thoughts. For example, describe a character having sexy thoughts themselves:
>Cheerilee looked at Big Mac with wonder. She had expected his dick to be big, but not like this. This was enormous. It was exciting and intimidating at the same time. She wanted it to thrust deep inside her, to stretch her out, to make her cry out from sheer intensity of pleasure.
If you feel like your descriptions are too short, then you need to dwell more on details. Details about what characters are experiencing, feeling, and thinking, details about the setting, that sort of thing. Most of the time, any detail that isn't repetitive is good.

4/10. Daring and Dash get caught in a bondage "mummification" fetish temple. The author challenged himself to write an E-rated fetish fic that mimics actual cartoons. I can't say ending the story with Dash trapped as the tightly bondaged immortal slave wife of the autho--I mean Pharaoh with Daring also getting the beginnings of the same "bad ending" is something I would have watched on Cartoon Cartoon Fridays back in the day. It was kind of funny seeing the narrator desperately thrash when Dash is all tied up and at the Pharaoh's mercy. You can tell the author wanted so much more to happen.

Plot wise, it's eh. The tone is really odd. The narrator really tries to play off the whole "immortal bondaged slave" thing as no big deal even though it's straight out of a horror fic. and that Daring ending is a classic horror fic "gutpunch" hope spot ending which the narrator really wants you to ignore. All in all, I can't say the author was particularly successful at doing an E fetish fic.

As an aside, I've been watching the old Justice League cartoon and Wonder Woman gets mummy bandaged twice by villains in various fight scenes. I wonder how many thousands of bondage fetishes those scenes birthed back in the day? It's actually kind of crazy how close those scenes are to some of the mummy bondage art I've come across. They're almost 1:1. It's eerie.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/528736/daring-delivery

6.3/10. Stumbling back home, wounded after a failed adventure, Daring finds a present on Hearth's Warming. This one was okay. The writing and pacing were fine. The tone started off a little grim, like she might drop dead at any second from her injury, which made the ending shift over to comfy SoL a little strange. I also feel like the ending could have used some juice. Maybe some shipping or something just to get it above the SoL line.

>>43652519
>actual climaxes
In the Daring pornfics I've read so far, the actual cumming is the least interesting part of the story. All the real action is in the foreplay and build up.

It's literally the climax of the story, and if you can't let the reader dig into it, what are you even doing? So many clop stories are like "and then he came, the end" and it's really unsatisfying. Like, what was all that build up for?

The count of holes (and halls and wholes) in UH's fics stays at zero, in
>/FSBC/

And that's despite us going "deeper" all fic long! I'll repeat my impression from his last fic and say that I think I'm getting inoculated to his weird dyslexia, or that maybe it's not as bad here. Sure, "because it's so knew" and "night car of a train that only has five" still show up, but sort of rarely, I feel. Also, hey, the payoff for reading UH fics is finally there when Satin makes a guest appearance only to go unrecognized by everypony! Plus you get the "silver blood" detail a bit earlier, in addition to the million other things that must come from his other stories that I've yet to read and that went completely over my head. Satin still comes across as sufficiently devil-like even if you don't know her, but it was nice to remember who she is anyway.

I'll go out on a limb and say that UH might actually be one of my favorite fic authors. I didn't say it after the Dracula fic, but I'll say it now. The atmosphere is consistently so good; the ponyness of the world (even if subverted—no, especially when confronted or subverted) comes through really well in both the world's atmosphere and the ponies' behavior; the pacing is exactly what it should be (the final walk through the train on Berry's third visit is long, but the writing manages to make it super tense all the way, and when it would start to drag, the Sparkler 'action' scene breaks it up well); the characters are all interesting and feel like they really live in this world and with each other. Really, I have no meaningful criticism of this fic. It's so much easier to fill a post with things to complain about. I don't know if the author is secretly a professional or if he just has an excellent intuition for writing well.
I have a criticism of Berry, though. She literally gets to live with this Amy and decided to be a drunk instead? What are you doing, mare! Get your stuff together, for Celestia's sake! She's literally there! Jokes(?) aside, the banter is super nice. Obviously this is a horror fic and the horror atmosphere on the train is the highlight, but I didn't expect how nice the character interactions here would be. I have NO IDEA, like absolutely none at all, why this guy's fics are so criminally underappreciated across the board. Choosing to post more even in spite of that is super respectable.

Oh, I know! That one 'feet' sentence, while technically correct, reads really silly. I think I said this in bookclubs for each of UH's fics now, and yeah, I still disagree. Other than that, though, I have nothing to reeeee about. Is this better written than the best horror fics of Grimm or Horse Voice? No, probably not. UH's tone is less overwhelming, less visceral. But I'd have UH with Rambling Writer at a tier just below, but with ponyness making up for the difference and overcoming those 'classics', even. And I like UH's story/character writing even more than Rambling Writer's. This is excellent.

Well, it's a Unwhole Hole fic alright. There's a few spelling errors- -I don't think you're supposed to write dashes like this- -but not enough to subtract from the story's overall quality.
I liked the story, and other than repeating “it’s good” in different ways, I don’t have much more to say. A mystery train that goes on for longer than it should is a interesting premise, reminding me of classic Twilight Zone episodes. I really liked our three leads in this story, with their banter and different reactions to the developing. It's funny how we ending up reading two horror fics back-to-back featuring Amethyst/Sparkler, with both taking her in a completely different direction. We are truly entering a Sparkler Renaissance. And yes, despite being a horror fic, Unwhole Hole still finds time to sprinkle in good jokes without them killing the mood. Thank you for finding the time to clarify that Snips and Snails are dumb and ugly (poor boys). It's all feels very well balanced, still delivering on the horror while maintain a fine level of pony-ness. Just a solid horror fic overall.

I can't disagree with you, but I also feel like you're putting the emphasis in the wrong place. A clopfic with little buildup but a huge climax is no good. It's not going to get anyone off because it doesn't set the mood right. A clopfic with great buildup and a small climax isn't great, but it can work. If the buildup is good enough, the reader will be aroused, and then it might take only a little to push them over the edge. I've blown my load to fics with short climax scenes when they got me in the mood first.

Of course, a really good clopfic has both good buildup and a good climax. But if I have to pick just one, I'd pick the buildup.

berry punching sparkler in the face made me laugh five seperate times. this fic is missing a [comedy] tag.
jokes aside, this was good. i'm not usually big of cosmic horror, i generally prefer it when i can comprehend the thing i should be scared of on at least some level; but this was still good.
i liked the more tame happenings of berry's first and second visits to the train, being simple spacial and temporal anomalies; good lighter spooks.
once sparkler looks out the window though, the nature of the horror shifts completely. it stops being a story about an impossible space, and starts being a story about unknowable evil entities, and it should go without saying that those two concepts bring with them two very different kinds of horror. like, up until chapter 9, i thought there might be a chance the epilogue chapter would explain that the engine was causing the anomalies and the exact natures and methods of them. it genuinely felt like it was going a way that could end up going there more than it did cosmic horror.
it stayed good for the most part though. i didn't really care for anything possessed sparkler had to say. it was all just meaningless gobeldygook you're supposed to find scary because of how meaningless it is. but post-possession sparkler's vagueposting about how dangerous the train was, how they were running out of time, how outside the window was way worse than inside the train, etc. was much more effective at accomplishing the same thing in my opinion. and the darkness scene was actually very effective.
if i had to name one flaw (other than the uh classics of worse proofreading than my 4chan posts and random character jumbles at the end of chapters) it would be that until chapter 9, everypony seems way more scared of the train than they should. yeah, it's an inexplicable spatial and temporal anomaly, but in a world with magic, i wouldn't expect such a thing to be world-shatteringly horrifying like it probably would be in ours.
like, why is sparkler saying that berry going crazy would be preferable to a train being longer on the inside? why is she so hesitant to board the train when as far as she knows, it's perfectly safe. until the nightmare creatures start showing up, you could accomplish most of what the train does with portals.
i'm willing to look past that though. we can just say it was because premonitions or whatever.
good fic.

>>
>>43655073
>>43655078
The show doesn’t say how old Cheerilee is, but she’s probably middle aged. We know that the CMCs think that pairing her with Big Mac is appropriate, but they’re so much younger that they can’t tell what age an adult is or what’s an appropriate age gap. The biggest clue is that she and Mayor Mare were in school together and are similar ages. We don’t know Mayor Mare’s age, but we do know that she officiated Bright Mac and Pear Butter’s wedding. So when they were young adults, Mayor Mare was old enough to have been elected to office. That would put her in her mid 20s at least, and more likely her 30s, at the time of the wedding. Since Big Mac is now fully grown, it’s likely been 20 years since then. Even if Mayor Mare was elected young, Pear Butter was already pregnant at the wedding, and Big Mac is just an older teen, Cheerilee is at least in her 40s. More likely she’s in her 50s.
>>

>what episode was this shown in?
It was shown in one of the comics (FIM #12). I think this does contradict the show though.
>>
>>43655244
Wouldn't this mean that Mayor Mare is Cherilee's age, not the other way around? Since they seem roughly the same age as Shining Armor here. It would fit with her dying her mane grey to appear older.
>>
>>43655255
Does that make Shining Armor the same age as AJ's parents? Fuck no wonder Twilight is so autistic, her mom must've had her at like fifty.
>>
>>43655287
My mom had me at 33 and I still ended up autistic.
>>
>>43655255
Well I wasn't the anon agree Mayor Mare and Cheerilee are hags. I just wanted to chime in since I know the comics are more niche. But I also don't think they're a good source to cite since they do contradict the show. I also think that Cheerilee and Mayor Mare are slightly older adults, and Mayor Mare just choose to make herself look older.
To clarify, issue 11 and 12 are a flashback about Shiny and Cady having a high school romance. However it also features pre-cutie mark Twilight. That means this takes place before the flashback in Cutie Mark Chronicles. Cheerilee being a teen here shouldn't be possible, right? Cheerilee can't be a teen in Shining's class while also being a filly in Rarity's class.

I don't think that one is as egregious as the comic since the age gap needed to make that work is not as large. It's not clear what the age gap from teen to young adult/older teen is here. If you want to get into headcanon you could say that AJ is a late bloomer (which is half canon, since all the Apple siblings were the last in their respective classes to get their cutie marks).
Occam's razor makes me think that Cheerilee and Big Mac still around the same age. This would also mean that Rarity is older than AJ, but I think that's fine and doesn't break anything.

That's all true, but AO3's tag system sucks for finding stories that focus on secondary or minor characters specifically. Oftentimes those are just tagged as part of a giant wall of characters with minor roles in the story. Okay, finished an editing pass on my dumb clopfic and it clocks in at 3046 words. That's one week of writing, though usually only 30 minutes to a hour a day and like 3 hours on Saturday.

It seems like dumb clopfics are below the standards of the thread, but I do appreciate the advice anons gave!

I feel like I have a list of solid core concepts, but lack the ability to deliver on their potential. Like the next idea on my list if I keep going is Pinkie Pie's Porgy (Party Orgy) which would parody party games like bobbing for dildos instead of bobbing for apples (insert Applejack joke about what's the difference) and instead of pin the tail on the donkey having blindfolded stallions trying to stick their dicks in mare pussy (which could lead to a WRONG HOLE joke). That's a fun/funny and fitting concept, right? It feels like the kind of thing Pinkie would do in an adult context. It seems like the kind of thing that should exist / would already have been done, but if it has been I haven't seen it.

It's fun to come up with these ideas that I want to exist but then actually making them exist is a struggle, and it feels disappointing because no execution of an idea is ever as good as it seems in my head.

You have to understand that we're pretentious around here. Your dumb clopfic? That's beneath us. We're going to say it's shit. Even if it's great, we have a reputation to uphold, so we're going to eagerly clop to it, put it on our private "Came to this" bookshelves, and then come back here and say it's shit.

But if you say, "This is my fetish and if you don't like it you can fuck off," then you're an artist. You have a noble vision. Your work is profound. We're going to eagerly clop to it, put it on our private "Came to this" bookshelves, then come back here and glaze you for being a genius.
>That's a fun/funny and fitting concept, right?
You're imagining comedic situations, not a comedic story. To tell a comedic story, comedic situations aren't enough. You also need comedic characters and a comedic plot. For example, maybe Twilight is embarrassed to be a virgin. She pretends she's experienced, but as the night goes on, she gets less and less comfortable. She remains unwilling to admit she's a virgin, so she has to come up with more and more ridiculous excuses to not participate in various activities. That's a setup that can be turned into a story. The easiest way to bring that setup to a conclusion would be for her to get found out and to then consent to having sex. And maybe the rest of the M6 knew she was a virgin all along and it was just a setup to get her laid for the first time.
>actually making them exist is a struggle, and it feels disappointing because no execution of an idea is ever as good as it seems in my head.
That's just how writing is.

It was pretty long (multi-part) and was a retelling of the first episode. It followed nun-twilight going on a religious pilgrimage and gathering up the mane six from the multiple pony political factions. Nun twilight also didn't use magic (the "blight") for religious reasons so she was a grown mare that was a blank flank.

I think it may have been a greentext?
>>
>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/441486/a-daring-mission

4/10. In an AU where the M6 have grown goatees and taken over, Daring goes on a mission to reset the timeline. From the word count, I knew this would have pacing problems. I don't think there's a way you can pull off an evil AU timeline fic in 1.3k and it not have pacing issues. The plot's okay, but it definitely has some of that amateurish feel throughout and could have easily been fleshed out way more to improve the story.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/434709/shoeshine-and-the-khaki-maniac

7.5/10. With the M6 busy with S9 shit, Daring recruits a group of background ponies (and Trixie) for her next adventure. Technically, Shoeshine's the POV character for the story, but I'm on a Daring run, not a BP run. This fits comfortably in the lighthearted adventure genre, much like FoME's earlier Daring oneshot about the ancient weapon. There's a reference to it which technically makes this a sequel, but that one's Daring and this one's feel different. This one's weighed down by canon while that one felt much freer and not as rough.

The plot's pretty standard for the lighthearted genre but like its predecessor, I feel like the climax could have been much stronger. There's not even a fight. Ahuizotl just gives up because he's a little cold. C'mon. You could do something there instead. As for the comedy, it was as I feared. Nothing was able to top the cover art joke. All that said, still a solid entry in the lighthearted genre.

>What’s it usually in fanon?
Dash is traditionally the "Weather Manager" for Ponyville, which is a bureaucratic government position that liaisons with Cloudsdale for the scheduling, Weather Factory allotments, etc.. And there's some BPs on the weather team. Other than that, there's not any real fanon. I don't ever recall seeing a City Council or Board of Trustees in any fics, or Planning Commission, Comptroller, etc.

Why would you care about posting when you're incapable of writing?
>>
>>43656072
>AO3 is easier to find exactly what you want
Based on my experiences, no it's fucking not. The hyperspecific tags means it's very easy to find "exactly" the one or two fics that have precisely the things you want, but because there's so many if what you want is something more generic then they just slip to the cracks. Finding good porn on Ao3 is fucking impossible. On Fimfiction you can just search by characters and look at each story, because limited tags mean only what's important is tagged. On Ao3 you get a thousand stories that happen to feature the thing you want in passing but still come up in the search because they're overtagged, whereas if you search something in particular get fucked because there's too many tags and variations therefore so most of the fics you would want to see will be missed if you search by a specific tag.
>>
>>43656078
Ao3 happily lets you post about kids being raped (or kids having consensual sex). The sole good thing about it is that it doesn't stop you from posting anything at all.
>>
>>43657338
I feel like Fimfiction is too far in the other direction, the tags are too limited and it makes finding specific things a pain in the ass.
>>
>>43656239
It's really funny that you're so pissy about Fimmy's content limits (which exist because the site is hosted and Knighty lives in a dystopia whose laws he has to comply with) because it's a clear attempt to make yourself seem like a martyr when everyone knows you weren't banned for what you posted (that would have required you to write something) but for hosting an off-site script for mass downvoting (of the kind of stories you don't approve of and wish weren't on the site, because you're a massive hypocrite on top of everything else) and then being a stupid cunt when trying to get your account back.
>>
>>43657365
This is solved by Fimfiction authors naturally leaning towards descriptions that are actually useful, especially with porn.
>>
>>43656307
Uh, yeah? I'm voting for Zehut tomorrow because they're the closest we have to LPNH.
>>43657333
A freedom need not be exercised to be worth having.
>>43657366
My script was not born in a vacuum. While I do advocate for certain "authors" to be taken out back, failing such ideal measures, I would at least appreciate the ability to filter their degeneracy so that I need not suffer through it.
Knighty, however, is more occupied with bemoaning his own situation than doing anything to fix it. Or his site, for that matter. Excepting band-aid solutions, fimfic's development has been stalled for close to a decade.
>>43657368
So you admit fimfic's "tagging system" is such utter tripe users have to fall back on full-text description searches.
>>
>>43657368
>especially with porn.
borderline exclusively with porn, and even then, all that's really doing is approximating ao3's tagging system.
>>
>>43657399
>>43657385
Ao3 doesn't even have a generic porn tag worth anything.
>>
>>43657368
Porn is the one place where Fimfiction's tagging system really fails. Porn readers want to be able to search by sex act, and that means tagging sex acts. Any experienced Fimfiction pornographer knows that their long description needs a list of sex act tags.

But outside of porn, I think Fimfiction's tagging system is great. People don't even complain about it that much—the complaints are almost always related to tagging for porn.
>>
>>43657497
What if you don't want to describe things? You just want to post and that's it. That's what tags are for.
>>
>>43657499
>What if you don't want to write?

100 is about how many pegasi live in ponyville.
in hurricane fluttershy, rainbow's goal for ponyville's total wingpower is "over a thousand", and the bar wants every pegasus to be able to clear is 10.0. so with some simlple math, there's about 100 pegasi in ponyville. this doesn't tell us how many ponies total live in ponyville, but i like the idea of there being about as many unicorns as pegasi, and about twice as many earth ponies as either. in total, that would be ~400 ponies, which feels just right to me.

Yeah, echoing the sentiments about A03 being a fucking mess. Like >>43657343 said if it legitimately allows you to upload anything that's a pro, but the con is it allows anyone to upload anything. Even just trying to browse the MLP fanfiction it's a mess of walls of tags of like a million crossovers (which must just be tags so the story shows up a bunch, because like a 5K word story can't have 50 different series) or "stories" that are just two sentences.

This. This is the main reason the tag system is annoying. If there are several characters tagged along with Romance, it can be hard to determine which ship the story actually features.
>>
>>43656482
This is very insightful regarding the difference between a situation and a story. I've got a list of dozens of ideas for stories, but I'm realizing now they're single statements instead of plotlines (like "What if X" or "Y does Z"). Maybe that's enough for a short fic though? Or more like "I hope this concept will expand into a story as I write it."

I guess the process I'm following is Concept->Outline->Story, and hoping in the outlining process the concept will naturally expand into a plotline that would support a short story.
>>
>>43657656
The lack of such tags makes the list clean and makes the site look more respectable from an outside perspective for whatever that's worth. Uploaded a test game to itch.io once and there's a typeahead for the tags there, so as soon as you start typing you get a tag list that's like 100x porn tags for every 1x game tag. Not sure if when you think itch.io you think "indie games" or "porn" but someone new just looking at tags is definitely going to think "oh, this is a porn site." If FIMfiction wants to be perceived more as "fanfiction" than "porn" not having a list of porn tags that overwhelms the non-porn tags makes sense.

Fuck it I’ll just go with my headcanon that it’s not very big. Maybe just major mare or one or two other actual officials, a few bureaucrats and clerks, and a janitor to (he does NOT do it for free). And that the percent of inhabitants of ponyville that work for the local government is small, around or less than 1%.

If they had to get the normal ponies to coordinate and lead things like winter wrap up or delivering water to cloudsdale that means they don’t have any full time officials that that’s the responsibility of. Which sort of implies there are not a lot of ponies in government.

Yes, it can be enough. Those ideas are often what you need to get yourself going. When you trying to turn them into a story, they often naturally expand. You have to set up the characters and the setting, and you have to do something to put them into the situation you have in mind. Once you've done that, all you need to do is figure out some way to change the status quo and you have an ending.

For example, "bobbing for dildos" is a funny situation, not a story, but it could be turned into a story (besides being part of a story about Pinkie holding an adult-themed party). If Pinkie sets up a "bobbing for dildos" booth at a local fair, you have potential conflict, and that can drive a story. It could be a story about Pinkie; maybe she's trying to get stallions turned on so that she can get laid, but it doesn't work until she changes something (maybe she needs to change the booth to "bobbing for pussy"). Or it could be a story about other ponies who just happen to come by; maybe Spoiled Rich tries to get Pinkie shut down in the name of family values, but Pinkie asks why, then, is it that the Rich family likes her booth so much? "My Diamond Tiara would never—!" "No, silly, not her! I mean your husband!" And then it's a story about the marital relations of the Rich family; I don't know where that story goes or where it ends, but it's a story.

It takes some effort to develop individual concepts or scenes into stories. Outlining is good for this because it lets you flesh out the main points of a story quickly. If something's not working, you can figure it out and fix it early.

5.5/10. Daring and Dash trudge through a swamp, seeking a famed pirate treasure. This one is a textbook feature-bait comedy oneshot. It even has the final punchline. The characterization, especially of Dash, has that heavy idiocy common in the comedy genre and I feel that drags it down a lot. It also really needed something to bring out the final punchline more. Maybe some more innuendo jokes or a running gag or something.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/450896/fulcrum

7.5/10. Daring and Mayor Mare's decades-long relationship is explored. This is a sequel to a fic I didn't care about and didn't read. The only relevant thing from it is Mayor Mare had some kind of relationship with an OC that ended badly. The rest of the story has that sort of "romance fic" tone and feel I first picked up with that Daring Dash one. It's an interesting ship and likely the only instance of it on Fimfic. They pair together in that "opposites attract" sort of way and it works pretty well. The romance stuff does seem a little oddly paced. There's shipping stuff, but it takes them literal decades to actually kiss each other. I also wasn't a big fan of the timeline. Daring is apparently 40+ years old in Daring Done, which feels way too old for me. Even so, it still scratched the romance itch rather nicely.

>>43657671
>Are you a fan of RidiculousCake
I like his early stuff back when he was still Goomba, but then he got sucked into the fatass shit that's ensnared half the people with the fetish and all his stuff in the last decade has just been totally unappealing to me. I'm waiting for the farting crap to start so he can complete the full descent into the fatass subgenre and I can wash my hands of the filth and start filtering him like I did with SquashedFlat and Cainam.

Noctulov used to be 10/10, but he hasn't done pone stuff in years. I've been reduced to the Qular guy on Twitter, but his art style is a bit too cute and not athletic enough to be that stimulating, and the Darky Russian guy on Derpibooru, but it's a dice roll whether his crush art will be a cartoony flattening or full gore.

That's why I have to write my own 80k fetish fic, because no one else is going to come close to hitting my bullseye these days. Reminds me of the guy that learned how to draw because there wasn't any Silver the Hedgehog flattening art so he had to do it himself.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/516959/rider-on-the-storm

A friend of mine recommended this fic and I wasn't sure what it might entail, but in the end I was pleased by a work that tries to make sense from a disaster that is the MLP Movie

Storm Empire being given context of a warlord "state" is quite nice. The movie makes it look like the King is a incompetent fool (who, somehow, also managed to /fool/ his commander into unquestionable loyalty), while Tempest just runs the tyranny and its army all by herself. The fic showcasing the whole operation as one giant WAAAGH! with T. Shadow as the only one doing srs bsns is amazing.

What isn't amazing is Anon's constant cultural references. I laughed at "beating quota" in the beginning, but was tired of them by the time the green faggot started talking about fucking wojaks. It's a nice gag to have Anon reference stuff only we get, but having some it /in every paragraph of the fic/ is absurd. What were they thinking?

A bunch of "meta" comments were also weird in my opinion. I love meta, but the fic used it in a "self-aware" way that's a clear sign of the writer not trusting his own writing skills.
Anon being blatantly anti-furnigger and pro-pony also felt too meta.

Back to good parts, I felt that the whole movie being "on rails" until Canterlot was neat. Despite Anon changing many things in the world he couldn't really change fate.

Anon's goons were nice too. The scene in the prison tower was just 10/10

I've to finish the fic, decided to post when I noticed the last two chapters + Eplogue taking one half of the entire wordcount. Feel like the Chekhov's guns are about to turn into a firing squad.
Feel free to reply, as I'm gonna return later today when I finish reading the finale

phoneposting, please ignore any typos

If you don't feel like carrying it, here's your answer.

How big is your laptop?

Although a phone and a keyboard might be smaller overall, you have to handle two things and any kind of connection issues that come up instead of just a single thing.

Also if you read what you write you might have more eyestrain reading a smaller phone screen for an extended period of time rather than a laptop screen.

The experience is very unpleasant. It was reviewed positively, too, so the others must've been worse (and I read that missed keypresses is a common occurrence on these tiny keyboards).

I don't think it's really solveable in the phone size or close to it.
I'm salivating a bit for something like picrel, but even iPad mini will be heavier than the keyboard, so not ideal.
A pretty cool solution is to use glasses like nReal and leave the phone in your pocket and just hold a mini-keyboard in one hand and type over it with the other, but that really attracts attention and also drains the battery real fast.
I'm afraid the best portable typewriter is a used macbook air of m-series. They do develop keyboard problems too, of course.

anyway...

New Checkhov's guns being /placed/ and /fired/ in a single chapter was insanely good, but the fact that "Plan B" is just "read the sequel still WIP in 2026 ^:)" is terrible. Why leave so many hooks for "plan B" just for it to be sequelbait? You only do that in the fucking epilogue

Also Anon being so OP that he predicted /everything/ just to /surrender/ for Plan B once he couldn't steamroll Tree of Harmony is absurd. How the hell did he miss all the EoH references in books while reading about all the ancient sorts of magic? His sources managed to pull info on stuff not even princesses know anything about
When reading I had an idea that his plan B involved "great betrayal" of Tempest, perhaps trying to use her "switching sides" for his benefit, but nope! Plan B is just him being another cuckstoned Discord for a while

Speaking of Discord, WHERE THE FUCK IS HE? I had a feeling that FS leaving the girls was her calling for him, but I guess not even in the MLP Movie rewrite the bastard is used for any meaningful purpose

so far enjoyed the battle scenes, although calmer parts (like goons' scenes and Anon talking to the Stick) have prose much-MUCH better than the main action stuff

You need to work on punctuation.
>“Twilight, are you sure about this? You're like a big sister to me” Spike said.
This should have a comma before the closing quotation mark. You make this error a lot: You consistently leave out commas and periods before a closing quotation mark. These are not optional. A quotation mark that ends dialogue must be preceded by punctuation.
>“Spike” she said seriously,
>“I'm going to 'foreplay' you”
This needs a comma before the first closing quotation mark and a period before the second. Also, it has an extra line break after "seriously". Were you the anon talking about ending a sentence with a comma for effect? If so, I have to say that, in at least this case, it just looks like a mistake.
>in person
Needs a hyphen: in-person
>Without her even releasing it
realizing
>This is beyond a standard deviation of the mean of expected length, width and depth! The overall proportions of your endowment are surely a statistical outlier!
I thought it was two standard deviations to be an outlier.
>Twilight said like a scientist describing an alien life form
Redundant. The line of dialogue already shows us this, so you don't have to tell us.
>a good job.a
Stray "a".
>Start Swirl
Star Swirl
>“Twi, I'm gonna...I'm GONNA” Spike didn't know how to put what he was feeling into words.
>“I'M GONNA BURST!”
Another extra line break. When you end a paragraph, readers will usually assume that a speaker is done talking and that someone else speaks next. You should usually keep a speaker's dialogue in one paragraph. If you need to break it into two paragraphs, you should clearly indicate in both paragraphs who is speaking.
>The pure sensations and bliss was
were
>his his still thrusting
hips

You cheat yourself a little bit. You start with:
>“Twilight, are you sure about this? You're like a big sister to me” Spike said.
You leave out the important, but awkward, moment when Twilight says, "Let's fuck." That's a key moment for characterization and plotting, and you really really do not want to skip it. I realize that this is porn, but those are part of the build-up and can be important even in porn.

Characterization returns here:
>Then without thinking Twilight kissed Spike.
But this plot thread is immediately dropped in favor of more sex. Which is almost fine. It's porn, so you don't need a romance plot. The problem is the final joke:
>“Anypony want to volunteer for another demonstration?” Spike asked.
>“SPIKE!”
This joke requires characterization because Twilight's exclamation could mean several different things depending on her exact relationship with Spike. I think the intended meaning is, "Spike, that's an inappropriate suggestion." That meaning requires her to feel responsible for, maybe motherly toward, him. It takes on a different meaning if their relationship is now romantic; she might feel offended that they've just gotten together and he's already cheating. Either way, it gets funnier if they have more characterization.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/392800/celestial-secret

4/10. Celestia hosts a meeting of that secret agency from the fanservice episode. This was a really weird one. It felt like it was part of a -verse as there were references to things I'd never heard of, but it doesn't seem to be. Felt almost like an AU given how canon would be brought up, then seemingly contradicted in the next sentence (hello again, Truth or Dare). Everyone's characterization also felt off, which only enhanced that AU feeling. Daring's role was very minor. Her character tag wasn't really needed.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/390686/daring-do-and-the-mask-of-the-windigo

3/10. Daring and a zebra OC go on an adventure to stop a witch doctor. This was a pretty standard short adventure oneshot. The length, as always, really hurt the plot. The climax especially suffered the fate of being so rushed, you can hardly call it a climax. There were also numerous spelling and grammar errors in it. Classic amateurish oneshot.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/397501/daring-do-and-ahuizotls-revenge

5/10. Daring and Somnambula must thwart Ahuizotl evil plan. Another in the short adventure genre (even though there's no adventure tag). This one definitely needed some juice. It was just kind of boring. The adventure stuff wasn't that exciting and the comedy tag was almost nonexistent. Couple that with the lack of any shipping subtext or anything and it just wasn't that entertaining of a read.

If you're absolutely deadset on it, I'd say to skip the cheap tablet ones and get a nicer 60%, like a Keychron or similar, though then you gotta figure out how to mount the phone. My real rec is to check your local college's surplus auctions for a 5 year old business laptop. You can usually get them for $80-$200. Might need to pirate Windows or descend into FOSS insanity for the OS, though.

That's very typical these days and not just on Fimfic. It's seemingly across the board. A decade ago, fetish art on Deviantart would get 15+ comments. Now, the same guy only gets 3. >Something weird happened in the last fifteen years and people just don't leave comments anymore.
Horrendous moderation on almost every fanfic/art site (including giving authors the ability to prevent people from posting on their works in many cases) combined with nightmarish toxic positivity cliques worshipping the ground author's walk on because they see anyone giving any criticism no matter how mild or beneficial as a direct threat to the fic continuing. It's in large part a function of the move to discord/etc. which coincides with the rise of monetized fanworks; patreons are best filled up by having a community rather than producing content, so it's more about having a big hugbox discord, which means keeping the whiniest bitches pleased leads to getting paid, and the whole thing latched onto sites because naturally the most popular creators have both the most financial incentive to keep inside party lines (and most of them have classically had interplay, so they get pressed into a united bloc) while also having the most sway over the sites hosting their stuff.

Basically the same thing that happened with Derpi, but it was the whole internet. Derpi just might have been a bit earlier and more public because poni stuff is pretty forward thinking and ahead of the game for the most part.

Am I the only one who sometimes searches through FiMFiction and just take a quick look at old stories from a decade ago? I don't know why I do it when it makes me sad. Maybe it's because of all the unfinished stories and authors that haven't been online since then? Or because it makes the site seem dead compared to now? I don't think it is, I think it's actually still pretty active for such an old MLP site. Admittedly, I didn't even know about FiMFiction until 2019, when the show ended.

Although >>43662543 may have a point, I also think the general increase in censorship, moderation and an closed Internet paradigm is also to blame. A creator is more likely to post/link to content in a private Discord and gets various small chat responses there, rather than a public forum with permanent comments. Like >>43662551 said.

Maybe I'll make a more of a concerted effort to leave a good comment on FIMfiction.

>>43662395
Oh wow, was it that easy to figure out? Thanks a lot for everything here, I sincerely appreciate it!

Edited the story and made a bunch of changes based on your comment. Tried to catch things during editing but in all honesty I had a really bad case of just-get-it-done-itis.

But yeah, a lot of the awkwardness and character development is cheated because it's a comedy clopfic. Starting in medias res was a way to avoid establishing a setting or specific setup so when it comes at the end it's a twist.

You are a gentleman (gentlestallion?) and a scholar and I sincerely appreciate the insightful critique. Any writer would be lucky to have you as a critic.

I do have a question for the thread about what reads better though. I see commas and punctuation as pauses, so for punchy or fast paced dialog I think it works better without them. Like for instance:

"Hi," said Spike eagerly.

vs.

"Hi" said Spike eagerly.

Thoughts from the thread on what reads better? Admittedly in that case "Hi!" might be the best, but regardless I think the second reads faster and therefore is better for something faster paced like a sex scene.
>>
>>43663198
Since I got a good comment I'm paying it forward, but be aware these are the thoughts of an amateur out of his depth:

First of all, nice use of italics both for emphasis and for the nametag. It works well for making specific words more impactful and sets the nametag text apart nicely.

Something that stood out is there's a lot of emdashes and ellipses. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with that, it just stood out. It does add a lot of long pauses to the parts of the story that use them.

Bonus points for using a semi-colon correctly.

The biggest thing that stands out to me prose-wise is the writing is solid but feels passive. The aforementioned ellipses and such, ending sentences with prepositions, plus the very academic tone and pacing make it feel more passive and detached than it seems like a first person narrative should. For instance:

"The taste of iron on my tongue shocked me out of my thoughts, startlingly so. The sensation was just so strange against my taste buds I had to fight off the sudden urge to dry heave. A portion of my pony-brain vehemently abhorred the taste of blood on a primal level; nothing constant exposure couldn't fix in time. I’d work this new flesh to suit my needs."

Like that's a very "tell, don't show" way of doing that scene, where instead of the showing the character actually physically dry heaving reflexively he just thinks about feeling it. And it's ironic that you have the line about being shocked out of his thoughts but then he just goes right on narrating afterwards.

But I feel like I'm missing a lot of context having not seen Chapter 1. With all the talk of suicide, describing a body as "new flesh" and this kind of emotionally detached tone, is the main character supposed to be a sociopath? Or some kind of inhuman thing? That's how it seems to come across.

Also the title makes it sound like a comedy but then the writing is very non-comedic, not sure if that's an intentional juxtaposition or not.

Overall you're still probably a better writer than me though, again seems like solid writing just academic and a lot of telling with the main characters' thoughts instead of showing with action, which isn't necessarily bad if that's the tone you're going for.
>>
>>43663426
>a body as "new flesh" and this kind of emotionally detached tone, is the main character supposed to be a sociopath? Or some kind of inhuman thing
It's meant to be a somewhat dif take on an HiE. Trying to tap into how... disjointed you would feel taking on a body that already had an owner. (Hence the disconnection and referring to Marsh Mirage as a separate entitiy)
Puttin' it short, going from a 3D experience to a weird mix between the two and shoved into an alien body really force a boy to drink and drink
>Too much tell than show
Unfortunately, I don't think I could tone it down on this part, since it's just stream-of-consciousness though
Other than for the bits with other ponies I can tweak that
>Passive

My headcanon is that snow ponies only came into existence around the time the three tribes unified and formed equestria. Some normal ponies stayed behind in the old pony homeland for one reason or another and through unknown magic transformed themselves into snow ponies to survive the new colder environment.

I've been reading some fics over the past month and wanted to thank the Anon who prepared the starter kit. I came back to pony after 12 years, and if it weren't for your recommendation list, I would probably have started off by reading FimFiction's top stories and gotten bored quickly. I was basically starting from zero, since back in the good ol' days, being an unitelligent, hormonally inbalanced middle-schooler, I only read the most notorious splatterfics (I recall a heated discussion on Rainbow Factory with my equally obnoxious desk neighbor) and some run-of-the-mill clopslop stories (fortunately, I didn't discuss those at school).

I haven't read much yet, but so far I've especially enjoyed Circles and Carousel; maybe it's the spooky season getting to me, even though it's not particularly pronounced in my country. Circles pretty much speak for themselves, so I won't dwell on them too much. The whole story made me feel more melancholy than fear, although the "it's been standing right behind you the whole time" reveal was really well-done and took me by surprise, even though it felt completely natural in hindsight.

Carousel is more subdued in scale, but I honestly liked it even more, which might stem from the fact that I'm probably a Rarifag in the making. I keep getting impressed by her episodes and have to agree with Larson that she's probably the deepest character among Mane 6. As evidenced by the show itself, there's a lot that can be done with her: she lends herself easily (:just:) to various narratives and can fit a variety of roles in a story. It's not even surprising that she works so well as a protagonist of a paranoia-fuelled horror story, especially since the whole conflict plays off her elemental virtue. Really good stuff.

I don't see Past Sins in the recommendation list and was wondering whether it's worth checking out? I recall it being pretty big when I was in the old fandom; it even received a translation into my native language, but I never got around to reading it. It seems like it still has some influence, so maybe it's worth checking out even as just a curiosity?

>fewer views
I like horsey ponies personally. Don't know about others but maybe that's one reason.
>>
>>43664851
A lot of basic stuff gets a pass as baked in cartoon logic: blushing despite fur, hugging despite quadrupeds, feline flexibility, tool use, etc. Then one step up from that, there's the more grey area of physical position and action descriptions. Like crossing forelegs, sitting in chairs, resting chin on hoof. Things that could be written off as cartoon logic, but could also be the author blithely writing for human characters without bothering to translate.
Anatomical terms. Withers, barrel, flank, fetlock, and croup are the common terms used in pony stories, though there's a lot more horse anatomy words that never broke into the collective vocabulary of fanfic writing as far as I've seen.
Maybe human-centric figures of speech like "all hands on deck" "turn your back on" etc.

You can earn a lot of leeway by leaning a bit away from cartoon logic and doing minor world building around quadrupedal life. Cushions and low tables instead of human chairs, less utensils for eating, push doors without door knobs, more mouth use for tools, horsey behaviors, etc. You don't have to go full rational with it, but the kind of people who would judge you for anthro writing will worship you for irrelevant minutia like that. And thinking about that stuff is probably a good way to avoid anthro-isms in the first place.

I wasn't even considering heat when I brought how equines work in nature. It was more an argument on why polygyny isn't that crazy for them. The concept is used in fics mostly as an excuse for sex though, but personally I'm more interested in how they would work around it rather than "sex sex sex".
>I don't think Cadance let everypony rut her before she had Flurry.
She totally did but Cadance's sluttery aside actual horse heat indeed doesn't fit neatly with what we see in the show viewed through the lens of an audience of culturally monogamous apes. Faust confirmed ponies have sex but not if they had estrus, so it depends on how you want to interpret "run of the mill". And that only depends on whether or not you want to have estrus or not.

>I see commas and punctuation as pauses
Sometimes.
>You can if you please omit commas sometimes.
>You can, if you please, omit commas, sometimes.
Other commas cannot be omitted. These commas tell the reader how the sentence is structured. Here a comma is necessary because it tells the reader that the sentence contains two independent clauses connected using a conjunction:
>She kissed him, and he kissed back.
Dialogue is another place where commas are necessary:
>"Hi," said Spike eagerly.
>"Hi yourself," said Twilight Sparkle.
>"Hi" said Spike eagerly.
>"OHMYGODWHATAREYOUDOINGYOULEFTOUTACOMMA," screamed Twilight, who had a heart attack and died.
If you want overwhelming detail, look up the Cambridge Grammar of the English Language's chapter on punctuation.

5.7/10. Bored of paperwork, Spitfire sets off on an adventure to find out what happened to a nest of phoenixes. I had high hopes for this one, as the two other Daring-Spitfire fics I've really made me want more of the dynamic. Sadly, this is another mistag. Daring barely shows up and definitely shouldn't have been tagged. Spitfire's characterization is a little strange. She gets almost weepy while trying to help the phoenixes, which seems to run counter to her general hardass persona she has. I do rather like the idea of another story butting into the finale of a Daring adventure fic, I just wish it hadn't been Spitfire and she could have been in the actual Daring fic.

7.5/10. In the EAW timeline, before the autism fully pops off, Daring enters changeling-occupied territory to retrieve a changeling artifact. I was very skeptical of this one due to that EAW setting, but I pressed on. It actually ended up a very solid "standard" Daring adventure oneshot. The pacing was good. The tone was good. Had a real WW2 military spy infiltration vibe to it. And the EAW stuff didn't seem to interfere much. If the author hadn't mentioned it, I don't know if I would have made the connection.

I've just gone through the entire Daring tag. Made me genuinely melancholic seeing entire pages of results from 2012 that are deadfics. Then you click on the author and they've been gone for a decade or, even worse, just logged in yesterday, but haven't posted a fic since 2015 and are doing anime review blog posts now.

> I didn't even know about FiMFiction until 2019
You got in just at the end. I feel like 2020 was when the real crash started happening, I think that's the last time a lot of people logged in, probably from the combination of IRL political drama infesting the site and the show ending the previous year causing people to drift away.

It's a 6/10. Major flaw is the characterization gets wonky at times (to the point there was a big rewrite to try and fix Celestia, with mixed results). For the history and zeitgeist impact, I'd recommend reading it. Then you can join the Nyx argument the next time there's one.

Thoroughly appreciate comments like this, especially when they're written so well, and so clever and amusing.

I've always felt my usual writing style (which is more like the sentence above) has too many commas and doesn't flow well for a narrative work. I was deliberately trying to write something faster paced, but I understand it does still need to be comprehensible to readers. Will take that into account when I write my next one which I hope I can make myself do.

I was fifteen years old when my father decided to murder me.

If you are some busybody historian, or nosey prick that has somehow gotten hold of this journal, hungry for the defining moment that pushed me towards the journey of becoming the Evil Overlord I am today, then that would have to be it. If not for my father’s wish to be done with another meagre mouth to feed, my fate probably would’ve followed the usual of saroths like myself; toiling away at the soil until I became one with it.

Evil Overlords such as myself are usually shrouded in mystery and mystique when it comes to our origins. Usually, by the time you hear about us we’re already at the height of our malevolent power, enacting the most terrible of deeds — toppling kingdoms, or the casual closing of the door in the face of another pony.

Truth is, the reason why there aren’t too many of us running around is because they’re dead. As I’m sure you know, it is hard to be an Evil Overlord when you’re buried below tons of dirt and soil and have your essence as one with The Great Root.

Unless if you’ve found a way to live from beyond the grave, or most dreadfully — I actively shiver as I write this — decided to become undead. Want to know why there aren’t any longstanding Undead Evil Overlords? Turns out that when your brand of magic is near-universally associated with evil, ponies and critters from all around are well equipped to deal with it.

I suppose my first lesson to you is to always consider doing the unexpected.

Luckily for me, I’ve been doing that ever since the beginning of my journey to Evil Overlordhood (there will be more on this at a later lesson). There are Evil Overlords that have been trapped in some magical prison for a few thousand moons until freed by circumstance or some stumbling idiot, but for the most part, our past remains the same to the ill-informed. Filled with mystic messages and ill-omened events that just-so-happened to occur at the right time, the misguided hoof of destiny leading us to our triumph and eventual defeat.

All utter hogwash.

Myself? I was born to a poor earthpony farmer on a farm — surprising, I know — at a little corner of Equestria widely referred to as Celestia’s Respite. Usually followed with bellowing, mocking laughter. I didn't come into Equestria as Shell the Unsparing; that wouldn’t be for quite, quite, quite a while. For the youthful years of my life, I was Shell Stinger, Shelly the Runt, halosēsor, mid-born children in a set of eleven.

Does this work hookwise? As in, would you continue reading from this

Having a strong opening line like that is the essence of a hook, yes. I really hate how gimmicky all media is becoming, but you succeeded at exactly what everyone including college writing professors say to do which is to hook the audience in the first sentence or first five words or whatnot.

Not the kind of story I'd be interested in continuing reading personally, but seems like an effective setup regardless.

>culturally monogamous apes.
A "strongest male takes all the mares" kind of herding doesn't fit into Equestria either, where ponies are super social and kindness prevails. A super strong harem based reproductive strategy doesn't overall really work with highly intelligent and social species. Think about chimps and bonobos. During the generations, when cognitive abilities of those rose and they realised monkeys together=strong, they slowly wiped those strong herders out of the gene pool thus generating different kind of social structure. An >inb4 somebody complains yeah, both chimps and bonobos are violent as fuck, unlike poners. But why would a weak, meek stallion participate into society at all if all avenues of reproduction are blocked for him? And after generations when those stallionlet turbovirgin genes have been pushed off, are all stallions just gigachads? It doesn't seem like it.
The fantasy world of Equestria itself is the biggest component against just raw, strong natural selection explanation.

Honestly, you should just read Gothic fiction, because Lovecraft was influenced by it and expands and builds up on it.

Would I continue reading? I guess...
First sentence is a big red flag for me though. Why can't we have normal family problems like "dad worked hard and I didn't see him much"? Everyone jumps straight to maximum edge all the time.
Other than that it's pretty good. One nitpick: You say at the beginning that it's a journal, but it reads more like a how-to guide and autobiography. I would expect a journal to deal more with day-to-day events and planning. But maybe the protagonist just loves the sound of his own monologuing, which would be perfectly in line with being an evil overlord.
>>
>>43666544
Try Dying Earth series by Vance.
It is not exactly cosmic horror (Cugel the Clever books are even picaresque), but very much eldritch and unknowable.

You'll be recommended King in Yellow, but its strength is in the multitude of autists trying to interpret it, not exactly in the primary source.

Try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4840f48V8iE if you can tolerate jeets. Feral, sadly, is not the only one in this conversation.

Try reading Derleth and figuring out why it doesn't work for him (despite him being quite a talented writer and being a legit superfan of Lovecraft).

I think that The Repairer of Reputations and The Yellow Sign are pretty solid, but overall I liked the love stories more than the horror ones, which probably puts me in the minority. Still, Chambers is nothing to write home about; lucky for him that most of the people who try to carry on his legacy never read him.

While Fimfiction definitely has some advantages over ao3, such as having cover art, i think some of the criticism with ao3 tags are a bit misleading.

>>43657846

There is a filter bottom right where you can set a minimum and maximum word count for your search.

>>43657530

The same goes for crossover slop, there is a filter where you can exclude all crossovers or even get only crossovers.

With this, ao3 also has 'parent tags', where similar concepts will still link back to a main tag, so all the niche blowjob tags will still show up if you put in just blowjob, but the niche ones can still be filtered individually.

>>43657758

As someone who reads on an old tablet, I cant use this technique cause I cant see groups in a stories description. Instead I have to swap to desktop mode, which is an ugly ui for my tablet. But even with groups, you cant really sort them besides the folder the stories are put in. So if you check a big group like "Clopfics" and go into the folder "Anthropomorphic" you can only sort those 2000+ stories by "Date Added", "Date Updated", and "Rating". So if your looking for a specific fetish it is basically useless cause there is no further way to search with tags or anything else. Sure you can try and find a more specific group like "Luna x Twilight", but you have to hope they actually did their folders correctly and didnt dump them all into folders labeled "safe" and "explicit".

Also, ao3 does have groups, though you have to click the story first to see what collection it is in. From that collection though you can still use normal tags and search once you click on a series tag.
