Come one and all to the meta-writefag and help raise the quality of MLP fanfiction! Featuring: More arguments about AI fics!

ITT: There's not enough AI in Yu-Gi-Oh, Applejack is half-donkey, look at all the Mane 6 (they're all a little bit pathetic),using [Romance] as a vessel for sex jokes, the corpse is starting to smell, sucking dick and being miserable all the time, ancient flood myths ft. Discord, my morphine abusing overweight grandfather, the food lore isn't even that great, Celestia suffering immensely, why Luna is black, expelled from 109 countries and one corpse, it's always the person you entirely suspect, trash vs. garbage, and wait a second, this is fucking The Outer Wilds!

There are a ton of "lone changeling surviving after the wedding" fics. This is the only one that stuck with me. Short and sweet with some interesting worldbuilding. Complete 15k words.

Loveable dumbass changeling exiled from the hive goes on to find a new life in the royal guard. Takes place over a very long period of time. Probably the most popular changeling story? 260k, technically ongoing but posting like a chapter a year.

The HiE as a changeling one. Interesting world building, large scale conflict, pretty solid overall and better than most HiE. Very long with a direct sequel still in progress, collectively like 750k words.

Sunset x Luna makes the most sense. I can't really see any character besides Sunset or Celestia spanking Luna and Celestia wouldn't enjoy doing it. Certainly not anypony else from the main/Canterlot cast that Luna wouldn't quickly come to hate.

Finished the final bit of the Traveling Tutor series. In the final one, Twilight is pregnant. This is a problem, because her fiancé is a dirty filthy fucking earth pony and she's now a princess.

But you wouldn't really notice any of this because it spends a good chunk (like at least a third of the story) on the author's griffon political headcanons. Seriously. This isn't a "Twilight got knocked up and has to navigate court" fic, it's a Griffon Politics fic. Apparently these characters are all from ANOTHER series completely unrelated to Twilight fucking her disgusting mudhorse husband-to-be while all the fair and well-bred Canterlot nobility faint in shame, but I haven't read that. The other half of the story focuses on Twilight's new royal secretary and Celestia's new royal secretary, who want to fuck each other. However Celestia's secretary is a unicorn (and thus a racist) and Twilight's secretary is a pegasus so there's some friction there.

To be honest I kind of like Green Grass and Twilight in this. Now that the requisite romcom bullshit is out of the way they're actually cute together. There's chemistry there and I actually enjoyed their bits out of most of it, but it all takes a back seat to FUCKING GRIFFON POLITICS.

On top of that the main conflict (other than GRIFFON POLITICS) is Blueblood and other nobility trying to undermine/stop the wedding between Twilight and her disgusting good-for-nothing probably-poor dirtstallion boyfriend. Because all these people somehow think that messing with the extremely powerful neurotic goddess who is also supported by a family of other extremely powerful horse gods is somehow even remotely a good idea?

Same as the others. I like his prose, I like his dialogue, the man cannot pace or plot his way out of a paper bag. He's probably an earth pony.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/40211/jungle-tricks

6/10. After a grueling journey through the jungle, Daring arrives at a remote village to meet with her contact. Fairly standard comedy oneshot. The narrator's really weird and flowery at the start, which throws off the tone a bit. I think the author was shooting for a comedy subversion thing where it starts as a "serious" adventure oneshot before the road punchline hits. It's okay, but the comedy still missed for me.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/35910/daring-do-bakes-a-cake

6.5/10. Daring has dinner with her mom. Family drama ensues. Fimfiction indicated that not only have I already read this one, but I upvoted it. It must have been back in 2012, because I have absolutely no memory of it. On the second pass, I would not have upvoted it. It's not terrible, but not upboat worthy. I'm just not a fan of family drama. It also has a weird foundational plothole where Daring quit her job as an archeologist because it's too boring and not adventurous enough when six paragraphs earlier the narrator was talking about the ancient idol she got from a volcano temple guarded by dragons. What the fuck are you talking about, Daring?

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/14702/dare-to-be-awesome

5.5/10. Daring wraps up her latest adventure. Didn't like this one that much. there wasn't anything structurally wrong with it. The subversive ending just made it feel kind of pointless and mean as a short oneshot. Would have worked better as the opening to a longer fic.

What was the longest teleport Twilight did pre-alicorn? I want to say the one in Dragon Quest, since I seem to remember that being the first one she did that wasn't line-of-sight.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/34183/daring-do-and-the-accursed-atoll

6/10. As a filly, Daring must survive a shipwreck. This one's supposed to be a serious drama of Daring surviving a cruise ship disaster while her brother doesn't and she has to deal with "the accident wasn't your fault" hallucinations, but I just couldn't get past the initial premise. What the fuck were the weather teams smoking when they made that storm? And if we're pulling the "muh nature" card, then what the fuck was the captain smoking when he decided to navigate into a storm like that? The cherry on top is the engines get struck by lightning and explode, ripping the rear half of the cruise ship apart and leaving Daring the sole survivor.

This thing would have worked way better if the disaster stuff was completely excised and it was just her brother falling overboard and her failing to rescue him. As it is, it gets so over the top, it almost veers into dark comedy territory.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/9701/daring-do-and-the-eastern-star

4.5/10. Her professorship on the line, Daring goes on an adventure to retrieve an artifact. A fairly standard short adventure, this one's a bit rough around the edges. It's got that typical fast pace and poor grammar you get from inexperienced authors. This one has a dark AU ending where Daring kills her protege to get the artifact, but it has no punch due to those bad pacing issues and the narrator seemingly not even realizing the darkness of the ending.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/12695/rainbow-writes-daring

4.5/10. Dash writes a Daring fanfic and enters it in a contest. This was another bait one where Daring appears in book form only. The story feels like it's really missing something, probably comedy. It just kind of meanders along. The plot also doesn't make much sense. What were you expecting when you turned your story in to Cheerilee, Dash? Of course it's a contest for children. That's why it needed some absurdist comedy.

>>43613862
People always say afternoon (3-8 PM EST), but I think that's wrong. You'll get crowded out by the million word HiE autist fic updates and other people that think that's the time. I contend 1 AM EST. In most cases it's not that we don't care about HiE, it's that almost no good writers ever bother writing HiE, so instead it's almost always mediocre slop (in the pre-AI sense). It's like how isekai animes are widely derided, not because isekai is a dumb concept but because they're all shit.
There are a select few HiEs which are actually decent and well-regarded, Pirene being the canonical example I think. Message in a Bottle is also not particularly hated (Starscribe is very samey but MiB is one of his better examples).
PiE is in much the same boat as HiE and just swapping the worlds doesn't do much to save it, there's simply almost nobody with skill actually writing it.

Of course there's some people who just refuse to read stories with humans because they want only pure pony, regardless of quality, but in that case again PiE does nothing to help (in fact it makes it worse since you also remove Equestria, too).

I hate stories that go on forever. Even 100k is too much. Most great literature is not that long and does not need 100k words to get their point across. When I personally rate stories any story that isn't finished automatically gets a -1 and a story that is, no matter how shit, gets a +1. Stories are meant to have ends.

>>
>>43619801
I agree, though I don't necessarily think length is by itself a downside. If you take a story and stretch it out for too many words, it's going to be slow, empty and bad. But if you can actually fill a long story with interesting things to tell, I'll enjoy that. Tolkien himself said that he recongised one of the main flaws of the Lord of the Rings is that it was too short, as readers just wanted more; and he expected the finished Silmarillion to be a million words (his mistake being not taking into account the effects of old age). Of course not everyone is Tolkien, and a HiE power fantasy stretched for 1M words is probably going to be of questionable enjoyment.

But I definitely agree on unfinished stories, as well as meandering stories. If you have some grand epic adventure plot for 1M words, awesome. DoWaS and FS together are 640k words and they're excellent IMO, and at no point did I wish for them to be shorter or to just get on with things. But if you are just writing infinite chapters of things vaguely happening, like the meandering arcs of DoaM (based on what I heard of it), then yeah it's just poor literature.
I am fairly certain Lunar Guardsman is of the latter kind. From what I remember of what I read a decade ago, it had inklings of a larger overarching plot, but it was glacially slow, and most stuff was just kinda the life and times of mr. human mcedgelord and Luna his edgelady waifu. I remember at the time expecting the main plot to start moving forward more after all the foreshadowing but apparently not since it's now 7x longer than back then and still going a decade later.

Another interesting case study might be Journey with a Batpony. I read about 400k of it around five years ago or so and it tickled my autism just right (I remember it as really not a bad story at all if you're not allergic to OCxTwilight shipping), and unlike DoaM or Lunar Guardsman that one had an actual clear plot that it was moving forward albeit wordily and slowly and in great detail. But I remember things moving towards some kind of denoument, and now it's grown an extra million words on top of that and I really wonder if the author still has a coherent vision in mind or if he's just lost the plot and it's become a forever story too. I originally dropped it because I wanted to wait for it to be completed rather than reading each new chapter when they came, and I definitely did not expect to have to wait for so many years.

Expound on what you mean. There's no shortage of power fantasies and there's no shortage of stories that are way too fucking long. Educate me on what litrpg is though

Also fuck you this talk has made me remember that series of the cheetah-man x luna self insert romance across three or four fics also spanning like a mil or something.

Story uses game-like mechanics as a way to show magic/setting
>Or think, The Gamer; that webtoon
>for example, level 200, mag:3, INt:4, SPD:5, etc
And by lit-rpg style I mean, there is constant feed of power being given to the MC as they "level-up" through the world
>>
>>43619899
>game-like mechanics as a way to show magic/setting
Oh you're looking for "displaced" fics then. Which was a particular self-insert subgenre centered around the common plot device of people wearing cosplay to some convention, meeting a shady vendor and being isekaid to Equestria as their chosen character. Not all of them go as far as actually shoving in game mechanics but some definitely do.
I don't know any that focus on the MC, like, "playing" Equestria by exploring and doing quests and levelling up. But they're usually all power fantasies of some kind anyway.
>>
>>43619103
That’s most of the hie long fics so long as your definition of power fantasy is a bit broad.
>>
>>43619918
Oh no, not displaced
I meant like litrpgs (character unironically has a screen and pics stats, levels, etc from it) but from your answer it seems that there aren't too many of them

>>
>>43615059
They end up being that long because mare-flares are involved, and those are generally good for multiple rounds.

>>43617825
I haven't had that problem yet, probably because I have an actual style. People who blindly call anything with crisp mechanics "AI" are too stupid to bother with, at any rate.

>>43619801
I just don't read incomplete stories unless I know the author well enough to have a strong belief they'll finish it. Stories exceeding 100k words are fine so long as they have enough breadth and depth to justify the length. I'm working on something much longer, but didn't publish a word of it until I'd finished two drafts.

Pony Life in a Zombie World is a... lite litrpg, multi zombie game crossover, streamer fic.
A zoomer wakes up as a pony in ponified Dead Island with elements of Left 4 Dead and other zombie games. Then in actual Equestria, canon characters start finding crystals that show them a live feed of him and let's them send him messages. There's like a game inventory and a skill tree based on the Elements.

Honestly everything about the description sounds revolting and I must have been at a low point to even try reading it, but I liked it and the ongoing sequel, which pivots to something more slice of life and drops most of the game/litrpg stuff.

6/10. Daring helps a librarian with an evil dark magic book. By Twilight Sparkle. The first twist on the "Dash writing a Daring fanfic" genre I've seen, with Twilight taking the role. This one was okay. The Daring portion of the fic was pretty bland, but it had some nice subtle Twidash stuff at the end that was able to lift it just a little above average.

>end

3.5/10. Daring gets raped by a tentacle goo monster. I don't know why I read this. I can at least now confirm I have neither a rape nor a tentacle fetish because this did nothing for me. All these pornfics just bleed together. This one felt weirdly sterile. The narrator never really did more than just coldly describe each action as it happened. A little floweriness would have at least made things a little funny. This is also the first time I've seen "femness" used to describe female genitalia.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/529745/daring-do-and-the-mystery-of-eternal-ruins

4/10. Daring visits some mysterious ancient ruins. This one was "translated with AI" from Spanish. The author does apparently speak it, so it might be true. Who knows. I'm not an expert on AI slop, so I couldn't tell you how "AIy" it actually was but it was pretty boring. The narrator just had no real life to him and that really dragged down the whole story. Daring's guide constantly saying "uwu" really didn't help things, either.

>>43616337
It's not really about the featured box, but eyeballs. Someone reading chapter 735 of anon fucking Twilight in a stream of consciousness narration might not have time to read the new fic that just dropped. You might have fewer people on the site in a "dead zone" time but there's also fewer fics for those eurofags that are there, making it more likely yours gets read.

Was FiM fanfiction ultimately so successful just because "x, but with ponies" unblocked the timid writer? Since apparently it's a critical for to so many writers to verify that what they're writing has never been written before, or at least posted, before working up the temerity to post it themselves.
Not that all writers are afflicted by this, obviously, I'm always happy that so many authors never hesitated before posting the 20th or 30th or 40th great Tunafic. They know that there's no limit on the number of times an idea can be rehashed. But at this point, I assume that only one out of every ten fic requests here are actually about reading the fic and the rest are research for the ideas pile.

NTA but I do pretty much the same thing and it makes sense because a "6/10 story" is a phrase that means something. Now WHAT it means will be different from person to person, but leaving it unfinished detracts from the experience no matter what came before. The colourless out of space, in
>/FSBC/

I won't get into time travel mechanics or how these creatures work, okay? It doesn't make sense. Waving it away may feel like a huge concession, and I'd bet $50 people in the comments argued about it plenty, but the story doesn't want you to think about that; it's just setup and entirely not the point. And alright, I am willing to work with the fic a little when it asks so nicely.

There are quite a few things I really like about this fic, so let's maybe start there. Mainly, that it's just a good piece of horror fiction. The pacing, the descriptions, the looming sense of threat, and the utter helplessness—all of that works here (maybe except for a bit of an overexplaining/overly dramatic narrator), and the resultant piece is genuinely decent horror that attacks you from a couple angles at once (helplessness, character drama, how complete and pointless the tragedy is, the declining mental state of the characters, etc., etc.). All of that is in chapter one.
But the thing I like the most about this story is chapter 2. Sweet Celestia, I love it. It's painfully long, but it doesn't overstay its welcome at all. Now, I am *very* partial to post-end-of-world scenarios; however, here it's not really about that; it's about Rose's mental state after surviving it. The way she's portrayed is so interesting and almost makes me want to forget the sins of chapter 1.

Chief among those sins—the paradoxes and overly-plot-convenient monsters aside—is that it really, really doesn't feel like a ponyfic. And I know that this is "the point", watching ponies crumble and collapse under unimaginable stress, but if "the point" of your ponyfic is to write everypony as if it wasn't a ponyfic, you're doing something very wrong. I must also mention the other plot holes and questionable decisions, which are all in service to the Plot the author has imagined. That makes it feel a little forced; some of the very silly scenes also feel like clichés that have been christened with a pair of hooves without any real thought to it. And when your ponyfic would've been better with humans, that becomes a big problem. This is like And Hell Followed in this regard, except made into a core element of the fic.
And so, I don't really know what to do with this story. The setup/framing asks you to overlook a lot, and once you do, you still get an extremely unpony fic. But at the same time, as a piece of prose, it's a pretty decent horror with an amazing chapter 2. I'm not leaving any grade, because ultimately that depends on how you weigh those upsides against the aforementioned problems.

[Voting]
Obviously I haven't prepared stuff yet, but I'm open to horror recs of appropriate length. Could be shorter, too, and we'll read like three at once. You can expect a proper list of suggestions either late today or tomorrow.

>it's just a good piece of horror fiction
Hrm, that's the opposite of my take on it. I think what defines a good [Horror] most of all is the feeling you get while reading it in the dark. Either:
1. The constant suspense or unease, and the feeling that the character you're following is rarely ever "safe". Largely a function of the moment-to-moment pacing.
Or,
2. The creepy, unsettling atmosphere, that feels materially different than something that is merely [Dark]. Just the perfect spooky "vibe", even if it doesn't necessarily make you scared.

This story didn't quite excel at either of those, for me. Yet, I enjoyed it still. The prose was quite nice, and the dialogue too—something I noted just a few paragraphs in. The monsters were an interesting concept, enough that I was constantly on the edge of my seat to see what happened next and how the cast would survive them—sort of the opposite of the proper reading experience for [Horror], but still a good [Thriller] [Drama]-esque experience. Having them ultimately defeated by starvation wasn't something I expected, yet it made sense and felt like a clever, satisfying explanation to me. I wish the author had done a little more with the concept, or given us a few more breadcrumbs of explanation, but what was there was sufficient to tell a good story.

>horror recs of appropriate length
The horrorfics on my shelves are almost entirely short little one-shots, and the longest I have clocks in at 25k (only about ⅔ the length of this one), but I thought it was very good so I'll recommend it nonetheless.

Didnt we read something almost exactly like this? Was it the no sound tree one? Anyways I dropped it a bit into ch1 because I just didn't see it get any better. Twilight is retarded and it almost seems that way so the author could write a badass Amethyst fic or something. Twilight has no plan at all for if present Twilight shows up and just stands there watching as she herself gets erased from existence. Then Amethyst decides to actually force ponies to stop moving in what seems to be a feat of magic Twilight wasn't capable of. Of course, if she is capable of it I suppose she just doesn't mind seeing foals prance through the street and explode into body parts and watching herself get unmade through a butterfly effect for purely scientific purposes. Oh also Twilight doesn't know a spell Amethyst learned in school, that's also hilarious. Then we've got Amethyst being exhausted from walking to the bags with the shield spell, so reasonably she takes a break. This break is about 5 seconds and then she decides she's ready to keep going and almost instantly dies. Maybe take a few minutes next time? Of course, this happens so she can suck Dinky's soul or something.
>paper is blank
Why are the saddlebags still there?
>"Amethyst informed, then turned to the filly"
Wew, the biggest ask of the fic is to ignore this shit. We have full on facial expressions, full mouth movements and ear twitching (this is giving benefit of the doubt about how much every single character 'looks around' to mean just their eyes even thought that is still movement) so I'm not even sure within the rules of the fic what exactly gets ponies killed. You can fully turn your body and be fine. Who the fuck knows.
>Amethyst having a shouting match against everyone alive

>Chief among those sins—the paradoxes and overly-plot-convenient monsters aside—is that it really, really doesn't feel like a ponyfic
Yeah, I think part of this for me was the Amethyst protag angle. She felt like the chosen one who was able to cast off her ponyness the fastest with cold facts and logic, whereas Twilight was a slave to her pony ways and died for it

My shilling campaign has finally paid off!
>Don't...
Survival thriller is the name of game here, and it is important to make that distinction for when we get to CH2.
This first chapter is paced very well, It does a good job at showcasing a daily life in Ponyville before everything goes wrong. It also does well at previewing all of our major character and how they'll act once everything goes wrong. Even Amethyst's dismissive "No thanks" goes a long way. For me, the drama and the tension surrounding the survivor group is the real meat of the story. Everything from Rose keeping to herself, Amethyst's growing being harsh on Derpy, with Derpy herself being softhearted and also being slow to pick up, all works well. AnOrdinaryWriter says in the accompanying blogpost that the character picks were mostly random, and I find that hard to believe. Background ponies give you a lot a wiggle room, but I think their existing characters traits are played up very well.
Referring again to the blogpost, AnOrdinaryWriter likens Amethyst to a psychopath. Amethyst is easily my favorite character, and makes a good villain, but if she is a psychopath, she isn't a very smart one. On my initial read of this, I assumed her actions were fulled by frustration and depression, showcasing our people act very much unlike themselves in bleak circumstances. If she is a psychopath, was her empathy for the fallen Apples just an act to gain favor? Was her readiness to try and grab the spell driven purely by selfishness. Maybe I'm being too literal, and she's just supposed to be cold and selfish.
>the paradoxes and overly-plot-convenient monsters aside
The wraiths are at their core set dressing. The story just needs them to take out most of Equestria, and isn't interested in the examining them much further. Taking out Twilight and the other Princesses is done to remove any easy solutions as well set the scope for how deadly the wraiths are. The biggest issue is that with more complex parts, like time-travel, it gets messier and easier to scrutinize.
>is that it really, really doesn't feel like a ponyfic.
Now, this does not need to be a ponyfic. I can see someone getting turned off by this being to grim or edgy for a ponyfic. With a thorough rewrite, this could be an original horror short story, and you wouldn't lose much. The biggest payout we get is an assumed familiarity with the setting and characters, so we don't have to devote as much time on backstory.

>...Move
Time Turner shows up twice in the remains of Ponyville, and I'm still not sure if that was an error or a nod to him being a time traveler/The Doctor.
The second chapter is where I believe most will be split on this, because it is a totally different genre of horror. There's an alternative universe where Rose listened to Lily's plan, and this is only one chapter. But alas, this is the universe where we delve into psychological horror. With every other pony dead, Rose now has to carry the remainder of this fic with her internal monologue and her ongoing battle with death. I will say that I don't think there a quality dip in CH2, just that it is a completely type of horror. I do think the introduce of Death in CH2 is a really good choice. It gives Rose a present threat, Death carries the weight of the previous events in the story well. Rose's extended dream with her family is the big turn point in this chapter, where Death seems to be the most appealing option. This is all psychological and carries the weight the previous events well. My thoughts on scene shift from "It's so sad that Rose is going through this" to "wow his obvious dream sequence is still going." It's really important to get the most out of this scene pivotal, even if the dream element is obvious, so I'm little mixed on the execution.
And then the story ends. Well, end my not be the operative word, because that implies conclusion. I think the most conclusive aspect of this ending is Rose choosing to continue to try and "win the game" against death despite everything. Horror endings are hard, but I think this one feels conclusive enough from a pure character point of view.
>it's about Rose's mental state after surviving it
This is my major hook-up with the story. At their core, Don't and Move are too different genres of horror that follow the same narrative. If Resident Evil 4 started adopting the writing of Silent Hill 2 halfway through I would raise an eyebrow, even though I love both games. And what if you only like one style of horror? CH1 becomes an exhausting set-up to get to real psychological meat of the story. Inversely, if you prefer the character drama, CH2 becomes a introspective epilogue that offers only a fraction of CH1's appeal.
In the end, I still like this story. I still really like the writing alot, even if it wouldn't be my first choice for Pony fiction. The horror fan is talking here, not the MLP fan.
AnOrdinaryWriter mentioned working a successor, which I assume is Chasm. I'm guessing we could try to add this one to the rotation if enough people liked this story.

>This story didn't quite excel at either of those, for me.
I think your numbering of the two points correlates exactly to the chapters where I felt those things in this fic. In Don't..., you get the more gore'y sense of danger, where literally any movement could be lethal. Whenever the characters start arguing, especially. This is also helped by the [Tragedy]-adjacent realization that they WILL NOT live through this. And you are welcome to delude yourself otherwise (I did that until nearly the end of ch.1 because that's what the protagonist did, and it is her story, not mine), but the pervasive feeling of danger was there for me. Again, this danger was actually more due to the other ponies rather than the Wraiths, but that might be intentional
And in ...Move, you have a very classic concept of psychological horror rendered in, like you said, good writing.
>what happened next and how the cast would survive them
Huh. And I was reading it, hoping that they won't die in the next scene, but knowing it is very likely that they do.

>>43630815
>Didnt we read something almost exactly like this?
I also felt that, but I think it's just a mix of a few popular topics/themes. Chapter two also remembered me of something, but I'm not sure what. Regardless, they're used pretty well here.
>a badass Amethyst fic
I am in awe.
Like, legitimately without words that someone could read her like this. She breaks and even the narration calls her out as a villain repeatedly, and she's obviously the worst pony out there. She becomes example of what horrible changes can happen to ponies due to stress. Though maybe you quit right as she started to act up, before it came to all of that.
>Maybe take a few minutes next time?
At that point, she thinks that any second could cause someone to die, see: the Dinky incident. Recovering takes ~hour, she says this to the others. No time for that when a solution is so close (or so she thinks).
>You can fully turn your body
Yeah, that's weird, and later on it's said that that you can't do that. It's a little inconsistent, but basically, it's mostly that you can't move from your spot. Again, except Dinky, for whom it'd be lethal. Just... go with what the narration and the scene's tension imply.
>the Amethyst protag angle
Then do read on a little longer. She's not... Well... Rose is the main protagonist for a reason. Amethyst's time is a little brief.
>>
I'm getting old and my life feels hollow and empty. I've wanted to write but only managed a couple fanfiction stories over the years, one /mlp/ one. Does it make sense to make a throwaway fimfiction account and just start posting stories for the sake of doing something? If anyone in the thread has posted something, does it feel satisfying or meaningful?
>>
>>43630845
Honestly, I think your analysis is quite on point here. ++for pacing and character writing, with the "not really pony" caveat from me still standing. Like, that "No thanks" was already pushing it a bit for me, and I noted it when I read that part.
>AnOrdinaryWriter says in the accompanying blogpost that the character picks were mostly random
Seeing something like that is a HUGE strike against the fic for me. Okay, you have Twi (for a moment), but like you say later, this simply didn't need to be a ponyfic, and it doesn't get much from being one. For many people it's not a problem, but I would hold that against a ponyfic. Not to say it's a story I regret reading—I don't, because it is written well, and I like ch.2 a lot—but "pony in name only" does strongly negatively impact my opinion of the story.
>Taking out Twilight and the other Princesses is done to
While I agree that the other issues is the bigger one and I get why the fic did this, it's also something I dislike. Princesses going out like that is bad, Twilight not warning them instead is also bad, what about Discord, etc., etc. Refer to the point directly above: the fic had ZERO intent to play within the setting's established rules and characteristics, and that's just objectively bad writing for a fanfiction story. Not a preference, just a mistake, imo.

>>43630852
>>...Move
Desu I agree with most of this, enough that there's nothing for me to nitpick. Just confirmign that yes, those are very different things, and I happened to be in the "loves chapter 2 a lot more" camp. I mean, it did make me appreciate ch.1 a little more as setup and I didn't think it was wasting time (again, really good pacing!) but yeah.
>>
>>43631251
>I am in awe.
>Like, legitimately without words that someone could read her like this.
Sorry I should've put "badass" in quotes. I don't think she's a badass, but what I meant is she reads closer to an isekai'd faggot than a pony here and part of that is how the ponies behave towards her as well. Without any build up or remorse she tests a theory on a body and everyone gets mad at her and she just fights back without any sort of apology. Then of course taking dinky's magic makes sense, not only to replenish hers, but to prevent another feinting spell, but nobody is articulating this, instead she starts yelling 'of course im right' and everyone yells at her back. She is making the 'right' moves but acting like a nigger while doing all of them. Feels like a fixfic where Amethyst is just smarter than everyone and also doesn't care about them.
>She's not... Well... Rose is the main protagonist for a reason. Amethyst's time is a little brief.
I never expected her to live much longer, because of course the only other unicorn had to die for further helplessness to set in. I just mean the forced progression of the scene through uncommon cold-hearted logic
>>43631275
>Seeing something like that is a HUGE strike against the fic for me. Okay, you have Twi (for a moment), but like you say later, this simply didn't need to be a ponyfic
Good point honestly, if you just randomly pick background characters then why is it even a pony fic if they aren't even going to do pony things?
>Princesses going out like that is bad, Twilight not warning them instead is also bad,
I didn't even think of that lmao, why the fuck is she warning the general ponyville populace in the market and not anyone important? Not even the elements, she's just in town square. And lmao for not warning the Princesses, the only ponies that might have prior experience with these things (although them quickly dying means they probably don't, unless they were just tired of living like Twilight was)

By the time Thunderlane crashed my mindset was "Well this isn't very pony but I do like the writing so I'll keep at it."
>the fic had ZERO intent to play within the setting's established rules and characteristics
I was pushing the character count between my two post but this was my other major hook up with the story. We REALLY need the princesses to job so that the story can happen. Did Twi try talking to Celly and Luna in another time travel run and fail? Again, this does not need to a pony fic. Like, if this was random creepypasta I'd probably rate it higher.

I can’t believe I got as far in this story as I did.
I took a look at the comments before reading, as I usually do, so I was prepared for the nonsense of the start, but it doesn’t go without saying that this bait and switch is bullshit. There’s a type of story you expect when Twilight time travels to avert a disaster, and this totally failed to deliver on that. Twilight exists only for long enough to bait you into reading the fic, so that you properly fall into despair when she is ripped apart before she can actually do anything else to justify her inclusion. And yeah, the ponies move rather a lot without getting got.

This story also did not work as a horror story for me at all. Throughout all the parts I read, it only felt like a vehicle to torture ponies until they die (except Rose). The best parts, for me, were the beginning, with Rose’s setup, and the argument with Amethyst.
I felt like there was almost something to the story when they were talking about the utility of taking Dinky’s magic, but in the end it was very underexplored and Amethyst turned out to just be a psycho when called out on her selfishness. It was articulated, but only barely, that Applejack and Apple Bloom chose their own deaths rather than force Dinky to give up her magic, and that it was not Derpy who chose for them.

When I skipped to Lily’s death, I simply could not believe that my reader said there were 20 more pages of this crap. I skipped through most of Rose’s monologues because I couldn’t believe she would be talking this much after a full day of dehydration. And then apparently she walks to Canterlot, just to, what, show the reader more death? I appreciate that there’s some commentary on how doing what she had to do to survive the Death game stole her equinity, but again it seemed to basically not be explored. Now, *this* may just be due to me skipping most of the second chapter, but I suspect it isn’t. There was a lot, a lot about how Rose is an empty husk of a pony, compelled to look at more death so the narrator can tell us about her looking at more death, but very little of the drive that kept Rose going in the first half of the story. Rose doesn’t really seem to want to do anything with her survival, she doesn’t rest or get cleaned up, she certainly doesn’t eat or drink nearly enough to justify all the travelling she does. The author only wants to talk about all the terrible things Rose sees, interspersed with Rose’s heedlessness of her own body’s breakdown as she goes to see them. There are just a couple lines at the end about how Rose has seemingly gone insane in her search for more ponies, but it didn’t really mean anything to me.

I also don’t see what the deal is with the praise for the prose. As Rariflag said, the narrator often overexplains things, especially around the spellcasting, and I was often kicked out of it by Skirts-like constructions. “innumerable degree of death,” “a mere matter of minutes” and “between weeps” etc.

I only made it halfway through so far, but it's getting late and I want to make a post anyway. Also I'm currently rangebanned, so it'll be phoneposting for me.

Despite how un-pony it feels at times, I've been liking this story so far! The first chapter played out a lot like a mystery crossed with a slasher film, where half the """fun""" is dreading discovering who will next receive a gruesom death. I do feel a little apprehensive going forward, because now with just Roseluck and Lily remaining, it's not easy to imagine that the story would kill off anypony else anytime soon. That said, the ruthlessness with which it killed off everypony already surprised me, and it did contribute to the dreadful atmosphere. That's dreadful in the literal sense of being filled with dread, because I quite enjoyed it, actually.

Now, of course, there's plenty about the story that feels kind of contrived. Amy starts lashing out in a very un-pony way, although I could nearly cut her some slack given how absurdly stressful the situation is. Present-Twilight just conveniently ruins everything for everypony (like she does all the damn time in every story ever) by getting herself quickly killed. At times, ponies clearly move enough to get themselves killed, but they don't because the author presumably overlooked it e.g. "Derpy shook her head". It's still kind of mysterious why talking, crying, shouting, &c aren't enough to attract the wraiths on their own, since those obviously involves moving one's mouth. All that said, the grimness with which the story shuts down every potential avenue of escape for everypony ends up giving me the impression that the author has some kind of plan and the guts to stick with it, so I don't feel bad just going along for the ride.

Oh, and the gore, un-pony as it is, doesn't really disgust me. It's very grim, of course, but in an... intriguing way? Like, "what's going to happen to them next?" I guess it just ends up being a little sadistically appealing. I DO plan on finishing the story later tonight.

It does help with feeling fulfilled if you're satisfied with your work and if someone leaves a positive comment. I guess part of it is that it's hard for me to feel the tension in the same way as typical horror stories. It can't really pull off the same type of tension when, from the start, it's clearly defined what will cause you to die and what you have to do to stay safe, and the characters that don't follow along are filtered out pretty quickly. Feels less like being stalked by something unknown and more like attrition. Again, not that I think the story's bad for it (just not scratching the [Horror] itch for me); it managed to play with the concept in a few different ways, with the seizures, shockwave blast, suicide, telekinesis kill, and failed double-suicide, to good effect. I also agree with what others have said about the contrivances with Twi and the time travelling and the princesses, but it's not enough to stop my enjoyment of the story.

Sincerely thanks for these responses. I feel like I going crazy not accomplishing anything in life, but trying to actually do anything is a real struggle.

Is writing 1000 words a day, ~5K words a story, posting one story/chapter a week a reasonable target?

Years ago I posted one story on FIMfiction that was 9K words, it's gotten around 4K views, around 100 votes split %50/50 because it's a fetish clopfic, and won $10 in the contest it was for. 8 comments, 4 followers, and I've gotten alerts for favorites but it seems like there's no way to see the favorites total on FIMfiction?

It took about a month to write. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. I want to write but I also want to do gamedev and other things and just end up doing nothing. Reading stories it feels like I ought to be able to write something like them but then actually trying to do it is so much more work than it seems like it should be.
>>
>>43632595
>it seems like there's no way to see the favorites total on FIMfiction?
This is because "favourites" is just one of the default bookshelves everyone has rather than an actual feature of stories the way it's a feature of images in a booru.
>>
>>43632595
That's an ambitious target for most people. Most of us have times when we're really productive and can knock out 1,000 or even 2,000 words in a few hours, but we can't sustain it. If you're dedicated and have lots of ideas, then it's possible. If you've managed something like that before, then I see no reason why you couldn't do it again. But for most of us, an average of a few hundred words a day is more normal. Also keep in mind that you should build in time to edit your work before posting it.

The site is less active now than it used to be. You're not likely to get 4K views and 100 votes. It's still possible, but it's harder.

>I want to write but I also want to do gamedev and other things and just end up doing nothing

Rationaltards are the kinds of ““people”” (subhuman bug men) that would argue that changelings are more important than and morally superior to ponies They’d say something like this in more pseudo intellectual prose.
>Changelings feed on emotions while ponies consume physical resources to survive. Ponies are also more numerous than changelings thus ponies cause more suffering and less happiness than changelings. Actually changelings predating on ponies is actually good since it’s diminishing their capacity to cause harm and takes resources from them they don’t deserve and gives it to changelings that cause less harm. So yes, I do support the enslavement of the ponies.

this is not a fanfic. it's two fanfics, one that ends on a cliffhanger, and one that starts in media res. one may follow the other, but with one being a high-stakes thriller, and the other being a slow, psychological introspection, these are different beasts, and they're two different kinds of beasts that i find people will be unlikely to enjoy both of equally. i myself love stories that involve a large cast thrust into an extremely high-stakes situation that may or may not involve them getting picked off one-by-one, so i'm biased towards the first chapter playing to my tastes.
i do think it's a good example of the genre though. the casts plays off each other well to stir up drama, and none of the deaths are redundant. it's just a good thriller, nonsensical time travel rules notwithstanding.
regarding the second chapter, it's basically a better version of another fic the club read a while back, "sorry we missed you", about rainbow dash wandering equestria after every other living creature mysteriously disappears. i really did not enjoy that fic at all, but thankfully, this chapter doesn't overstay its welcome to nearly the same degree. although it did still feel like it was dragging to me at parts.
as someone who really enjoyed the first chapter, i found the vastly slower paced second chapter to be disappointing. not that it's even this chapter's fault, but if you liked the first chapter, and you wanted more of the same, you will be disappointed; and inversely, in you didn't like the first chapter, you might drop the fic before finding out that you really like the second chapter. that's a risk when the two chapters of your fic are entirely different genres. the second chapter isn't bad, but it's not what i wanted, and consequently, it does hold the fic back for me slightly. roseluck wandering equestria almost feels like a massively extended epilogue.
oh yeah, neither chapter felt like horror at all to me. the first was the purest thriller ever, and the second is kind of hard to fit into a genre, neither drama nor tragedy really feel quite right, but it's certainly not horror.
>>43630852

I was actually on medication for ADHD at one point in my life, but it didn't seem to do anything so eventually I just stopped taking it. Are you taking something, and can I ask what it is? I really don't want to have to rely on medication but at this point I just want to accomplish something before I die.

If FIMfiction has lost so much traffic, is there any other pony site that would be better to post on or is it just a general traffic decrease all over for pony stuff due to the FIM series ending?
>>
>>43632766
Fimfiction's traffic is still pretty consistent, it's just that new users have slowed down because of an anti-scam bot measure (that did nothing to really stop the bots).
>>
>>43632766
I'm on Vyvanse, and I've been on Adderall before. I didn't want to have to rely on medication either, but it just makes my life better. I don't lose my keys. I don't forget to do paperwork. I don't procrastinate on fixing things around the house. I went off stimulants a few years ago because of the stimulant shortage (I couldn't find a pharmacy with anything), and I ended up drinking like a quart of coffee every day just to function adequately. Getting back on stimulants was easier and works better.

The whole fandom has shrunk, but Fimfiction is still the best horsewords site. The only serious alternatives are Ponepaste and AO3, and neither of those gets as much traffic.

>Rationalism
Stop using the words wrong. That is not the term for lesswrongers. You're looking for the word "rationality", not "rationalism". Rationalism is the philosophical position of believing in reason as the source of knowledge, as opposed to trying to find knowledge via sensory experience. In other words, Plato rather than Aristotle.
The HPMOR-spawned cult of rationality seems to often be diametrically opposed to rationalism. Rationality is grounded in the empirically-determined 'real' world, whereas rationalism doesn't care about it at all.

Writing just takes time, time, time, time.
Compare it to drawing for example, obviously learning to draw is hard and takes dedication and time. But once you've got a short baseline, you can get simple sketches done in 30-60 minutes, and a good sketch can often be enough to convey an idea, a joke or a meme, a feeling. A good artist can probably get a speed sketch done in like 10 minutes - going from "here's an idea that would be funny" to fully fleshed out recognisable ponies doing that idea in literal minutes. Highly rendered art pieces with advanced painting and lighting, tons of detail etc. can take many hours but they're not necessary to convey the basic idea of a drawing. People will spend 10 seconds looking at your meme sketch and 15 seconds looking at a beautifully rendered artwork all the same.

For writing, it doesn't matter how skilled you are, it just takes raw time to type out words. If you truly are skilled and talented and can shit out a coherent plot without editing, maybe you can write short stories in like an hour each, for 1-2k words. But a story of 1-2k words is almost always going to be devoid of substance, it gets read in five minutes and forgotten within half an hour.
Any sort of longer story takes time, raw time to type out more words. Editing takes time, because it means re-reading all those words all over, thinking about each individual passage (of which there will be dozens in a short story, hundreds to thousands in anything longer), possibly retyping. Cutting, pasting, throwing away entire sections and redoing them.

Writing can be rewarding but you do need to expect to have to just sit down and type for 2 hours straight. And then do it again and again every single day, and then after multiple days you'll have a new short-medium lenght story or a new chapter for your longer story. And in the meantime you're just sitting down, putting in an hour or several hours of work and knocking out a chunk of the whole, not even something complete. Unless again you only focus on really short tiny stories but then again you're spending a couple of hours straight working to create something people will think about for a few minutes at most.

In terms of actual reward, I do think becoming a meme artist is faster and easier. If you have a sense of humour, you can more or less get by with a pretty beginner artstyle and simple, quick sketches, so you just need to spend maybe a few weeks training your hand just enough to get recognisable pony shapes reliable and you can start putting ideas from your mind directly to paper.
Getting started with writing is easier if you have a basic grasp of English grammar, but getting anything of note achieved is vastly more time-consuming.

No, that's just an excuse that bad fetish writers use to tell themselves they don't need to write a better story. A fat red bar seems to pretty consistently mean a pile of trash with no redeeming qualities. Even a fetish fic for a fetish not shared by any reader is still going to get enough upvotes to not have a huge red portion of its bar it if has even somewhat hot sex or worthwhile narrative.

There was zero from it. When I read that Twidash hypnosis fic way back when, it at least stirred something up when Twilight nearly mindfucked Dash into being her Royal Guard slave and that one had none of my main fetishes in it.

It's nice getting stories out there. Part of it for me is just finally "locking it in". Once it's posted and public, it's done. If I never post it, I'd just keep editing the thing until I died.

>Is writing 1000 words a day,
1k a day is definitely doable but like >>43632742 said, it is pretty ambitious. For reference, you said it took a month to write the 9k fic. That's 300 a day, which sounds more typical given there will be days you don't write at all for IRL reasons or other entertainment eating your time.

>~5K words a story
Story length will vary greatly based on plot. 5k is about average or a little high for a comedy or SoL oneshot, but would be a tad short for adventure, romance, or mystery/thriller.

>posting one story/chapter a week a reasonable target?
That's pretty ambitious for a story. That's only giving you 5 days to write and 2 to edit.

>one story on FIMfiction
You won't get anywhere near those numbers today. My featurebait fic I recently wrote that was featured is 22-1 with 176 views and 9 comments (four of which are people arguing with each other, so they don't really count).

You want absurdist comedy if this is what you're aiming for. Readers will give a wacky comedy plot a mile of slack if it lands the punchline, story or characterization be damned.

Here's all the 3/10 or below Daring fics I've read so far. They almost universally have what I'd call an "amateurish narrator" that sounds like he's either ESL or a teen boy. Once you read it you see this narrator in most bad fanfics. Characterization and rushed pacing problems also nearly always abound.

>You just said it's a bad text, of course it wouldn't. Or are we defining a fetish as an affinity so strong it transcends any issues of quality?
A strong fetish can. I've read some awful fics that just barely manage to string together a plot but describe a scenario that I still found hot if I stopped having a headache over the broken english and just imagined that was apparently supposed to have been happening in my head. I wouldn't have fapped to that as-is but I at least recognised it as potentially hot.

If you read a really well written and actually sexy fic and you get aroused despite the fic featuring some stuff you didn't think you'd be into, I don't think that qualifies as a fetish. It's words on a page, it's not hard to make something sound sultry and arousing with the proper descriptions even if there's a bunch of stuff happening around the benis in bagina that you thought would be the only thing that you'd care about.

Have you ever commissioned an author on FIMfiction? Was it worth it?

I've commissioned authors before but looked for prices around $10/1000 words and of course no one charges that now, everything's more expensive. I've also been disappointed more often than not with commissions. But I still kind of want to commission things? It might be an addiction. In most headcanons celestia cannot dream walk or do dream magic because of the nature of her own magic or her naturally being unable to do it.
But what if instead she can do it but elects to never do so because the way her magic interacts with the dream realm makes dreams become nightmares or some other sort of bad outcome?

It is currently about 7:30PM for me. I suffer from chronic insomnia and felt especially bad today so spent most of the day in bed and ran out of Tylenol and didn't get anything done. Then in the last hour or so I typed up the story outline for what I want to write, 437 words total. Not the 1000 I wanted but at least I have an outline.

Does that sound reasonable to any writer anons in the thread? And would doing one progress post a day not be too spammy? I need to force myself to make progress somehow and maybe making a post a day would be a way to do that.
>>
>>43639741
Is 437 words the length of the outline or the target length of the fic? That seems awfully short. Fimfiction has a minimum word count of 1000.
>>
>>43639754
437 is just what I was able to type today for the outline with reminders to myself of what I want to include and such. Still planning on like ~4K-5K for the fic. I'm trying to do ones that I can do in week so I can get in a routine and actually accomplish something each week. Going to try and eat something and then might try to do the intro to see if I can hit 1K words for the day.

Is it best to write a story in order from start to end? That seems like the natural way to do it to me but I know for things like movies and games they're not made in order.

I've been commissioned, and all of my clients like what they've been getting.

>I've commissioned authors before but looked for prices around $10/1000 words and of course no one charges that now, everything's more expensive.
That was a bad deal for the author six years ago, before inflation—and not the kind of inflation I like—fucked everything up.

>I've also been disappointed more often than not with commissions. But I still kind of want to commission things? It might be an addiction.
When you commission someone, you're having him take your idea and breathe life into it, since you can't animate it yourself. He allows you to guide his hand. It's definitely addictive.

>I can afford it but it's probably a bad use of money at any price.

I'm particularly pleased with my portrayal of Twilight Sparkle and Spike in the second, and one of the most positive comments I've ever received regarded my portrayal of Eris, albeit in another, similar story. I didn't care for Tempest Shadow enough to write about her of my volition, but she's a fun and sombre character too.

What kind of commission did you have in mind? I'd figure it's nothing like my usual work, but that wouldn't be an issue for me. It could be fun to write something different.

Unless you've got the entire story mapped out in your head or on paper start to finish makes the most sense imo. Sometimes if I've got an idea for a really good scene and I don't want to lose it I'll write it down and save it for later, but I 99% of the time I just write in sequence. It's entirely up to you, though. If you like writing scenes out of order you might want to consider using a program called Scrivener, it's good for organizing.

NTA but I used to do that... Actually, I still do that sometimes. Sometimes you just want to get a particular scene that you're dreading writing over with. Or you're struggling with the current scene and want to jump ahead a bit to give yourself more motivation by creating a more enjoyable part of the whole. It's fine if you have to edit it later.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/536125/a-daring-tradition

6.3/10. Daring needs to RGRE Rockhoof and claim him as her mate. I might be exaggerating that a bit. I don't really know anything about RGRE. It's a fine little oneshot, though the shortness really hurts the shipping element of it. I was also annoyed by the ending. There's nothing wrong with it. It just wasted a great opportunity for a final "I was just joking when I told her she needed to claim him" punchline from Twilight.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/546571/daring-do-and-the-temple-of-syrinx

5/10. Daring and Flitter encounter a sphinx guarding an ancient treasure. Flitter was a very odd choice for this. I feel like pretty much any other character would have worked better than an OC wearing a BP skin. The fic itself is fine. Comedy misses for me and it feels a tad amateurish, but there's been way worse. The CYOA gimmick is a complete waste of time and should not have even been bothered with.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/586233/daring-do-and-the-hearths-warming-heresy

7/10. Daring is framed by Ahuizotl and must clear her name before the Yaks do their cartoon execution. This one slots itself nicely into the "regular adventure" genre. The anti-creaturequestria faction won't like it much, but I thought it was a rather nice, shorter adventure fic. Pacing felt good and the writing wasn't bad. Only real complaint was the asspully nature of the ending. Daring, ultimately, doesn't even really do anything to actually clear her name. The plot just does it for her.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/92300/crisis-on-two-equestrias
This is a totally great, but rather short mirror universe story wrapped in a thin layer around a preposterously bloated, and frankly ugly, fight scene.
The start of it is a real banger, I was on the edge of my seat as !Trixie reacted to the strangeness of canon Equestria and what she did to reassert her own sense of control and normalcy. !Trixie is a fun and interesting character, the blending of Trixie and Twilight works really well. This goes on for the first five chapters, and I got a lot of neat scenes that allude to the Lunaverse without particularly making me want to read it, since I’m not that interested in the other Elements from it. Probably the best part of it was the idea of the sets of six friends from the separate universes assembling to face off against each other at a full competence level, and in a way that doesn't feel contrived at all, and they are both treating it like a misunderstanding, and a friendship problem.

Then the title of the story happens, and it falls flat on its face. It shouldn’t even really be called that, because it’s a crisis only in canon Equestria. Two Twilights and two Trixies get into a fight, and circumstances manifest a villain for them to defeat. The only good thing about the fight is that a lot of cool scenes happen, like you'd hope for in a powerscaled shounen. Otherwise, it is a powerscaled shounen dumpster fire in the worst way. Antithesis’ only line, repeated ad nauseum, is that she intends murder. It is obvious from the first seconds of their first interaction that she can squash the four of them like ants. Instead, she summons four doors in a square and smacks Twilight with them by opening and closing them. For at least 40k words, the four heros continue living only so that the story can continue, and then Antithesis loses in the second most obvious way imaginable (the way the fic tells you she will lose 40k words ago). The most obvious way (the interlopers all returning to Lunaverse) doesn’t happen because then the story would’ve ended while it was still good.

Anyway, I did say wrapped because the denoument also contains a great sermon on friendship that could’ve come straight out of the show. After all, it is a core tenet of the show that Friendship is Magic, and that friendship problems can’t be solved with violence. The feel-good scenes with the heros and Lunas are very welcome.
There being two Lunas in the fic also does a lot to compensate for the fight.

RGRE seems pretty broad and ill-defined, so I'm always wondering what people are imagining when they hate on it. What's your tolerance level:
>1. Gender imbalance leads to mares usually pursuing stallions
>2. Males are equal, but seen as valuable and to be protected, implicitly for cultural reasons stemming from gender imbalance. "Evacuate the stallions and foals first"
>3. Matriarchy. Males are legally equal, but socially condescended to and may face light discrimination. Certain qualities are considered "marely"
>4. Mares are physically stronger, many physical and political jobs are considered "mare's work," stallions may face sexual harassment.
>5. Males are weak and infantilized. Little is expected of them intellectually or physically
>6. Stallions are "whimsical" himbos, the royal guard is Celestia's harem, ball bras, etc.
>>
>>43643747
all rgre fundamentally stems from the utterly retarded idea that ponies have an imbalanced sex ratio, so it's all automatically bad. not to mention that all of it also goes against canon even more than imbalanced sex ratio aus do by default.
>>
>>43643747
All of these sound stupid to me. If anything there's more evidence that Equestria is far less prone to sexism than Humanplanet, and any of these ideas seem more at odds with Equestria's relatively utopian nature than supporting it.
>>
>>43643747
These all taste like different flavors of retarded. Knowing nothing, my first thought would be a mixture of 3 and 4. In practice, it doesn't really matter since they all just seem to be a flimsy excuse to write fetish wank about Anon getting dommed by mares.
>>
>>43643747
It's 1 or 2, but you've grouped these very strangely. Much of the stuff in 6 is just a product of sexualization and absolutely falls into a 1 and doesn't represent discrimination at all. You don't have to have every stallion be a whimisical himbo to have trophy husbands and sexalization of ponies, you just need to have sexalization of ponies (something which isn't really on screen). We literally see a trophy husband and a trophy-husband-to-be inside the first and second season finale.

>>
Dammit dammit dammit, why is writing so hard? I enjoy coming up with ideas for stories a lot and it's easy for me to jot down like three dozen different story ideas, but then when it actually comes to writing one the process is so grueling. Is that what it's like for everyone else too?

Hit 1070 words today but realizing the first 437 really don't count because it's just an outline of "Then this happens, then this happens, etc" and I actually have to turn all that into narrative. I'm really only writing for like an hour or less a day though, because I spend the rest of the day dreading it. I don't have a good vocabulary so I'm already being redundant with descriptions and even using a thesaurus doesn't help much because I don't want the writing to feel thesaurus'd with words like "peremptory" instead of "proud." And comparing my writing to other stories I probably have way to much dialog compared to narrative because I can't write good descriptions so I'm relying on people thinking the dialog is funny/vaguely amusing. Plus Steven King said "never use adverbs because you won't be able to stop" and he was right because I've been writing with adverbs all my life and I absolutely can't stop or write a paragraph without them.

Writing is NOT supposed to be a form of torture, right? How the hell does anyone do it?

>. Mares are physically stronger, many physical and political jobs are considered "mare's work," stallions may face sexual harassment.
I personally would go that mares are magically more powerful than stallions, which translates to more strength in earth ponies, more speed in pegasus, and, well, more magic for spells for unicorns.
It doesn't mean that stallions can't have a lot of magic, or that mares can't have little magic, but it's a average thing, as in, most magically powerful ponies are mares.
In an absence of magic, however, stallions are physically stronger due to size and muscle mass.
>>
>>43643747
I only recently discovered RGRE from coming back to the board after being away for years, and a couple of images focusing on mare/stallion dynamics had me really interested. But unfortunately it seems despite the name it's not actually focused on reversed roles or social dynamics but is more like a modern NEET harem fantasy, a human manchild having a bunch of mommies to handle all the responsibilities for him and reward him with sex for existing. Even most of the points you mentioned tend to be violated whenever it's convenient for that fantasy, with the relative strength and social roles of mares and the self-insert human changing depending on what the writer wants. And any mention of gender imbalance seems to just be an excuse for a self-insert to be considered attractive by mares without having to bathe or actually have any attractive qualities.
>>
man really I wish i could get to read another shitty self insert isekai story staring a loser in his early 20s who gets transported to equestria... but nobody writes anything like that anymore... so sad...
>>
>>43643959
Don't worry I'll be doing this (and it'll actually be labeled with a Self-Insert tag)
>>
>>43643952

>>
How about this for an HIE plot:
Lao Tsu accidentally wanders through a portal to equestria while traveling west and then pisses off twilight because she’s to much of an analytical autist to understand the Dao
>>
>>43643747
>>43643952
And again along the lines of "violating the concept for harem fantasy" just checked the thread and the most recent post is about how all the mares are secretly into maledom and need the human self-insert to make them realize they actually want men on top. If you actually go back and read through the threads (which I did back when I thought the concept was something it wasn't) there's a ton of this, where any excuse is made so the self-insert human still has a dominant role in the relationships/society but still doesn't have to have any responsibility.
>>
>>43643952
>I only recently discovered RGRE from coming back to the board after being away for years,
How?
No, really, how?
>>
>>43643949
>stallions are physically stronger due to size and muscle mass
Most common compliment a stallion receives is how big they are. Because thats the one thing that all mares agree on as a gender-based, biological difference between mares and stallions. That they are big.
Not smart, not magical, not kind(er). Stallions are expected to be big. Because if they aren't big, then they're just a worse mare.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/595785/to-future-you
RariTwi fic I read on a whim. Twilight watches a bunch of video recording Rarity left for her after her death. I really like the premise of "Twilight coping with the death of her friends" but this one did not hit. I feel like the tone is way too bouncy and casual for the subject matter. Removed from MLP, this is a story about a women finding a memento from her late wife, and remembering the life they built together. This feels like it's about a girl listening to answering machine messages from her GF who was gone away for a few months.
This story is mostly Rarity talking, and I really really hate this Rarity. There this signature decorum about Rarity that just isn't there for me. For me, what I like about Rarity is that she cares greatly about presentation, how she carries herself (even if it doesn't matter to other), and how she doesn't let that supersede her inherent generous. She's all about elevating others and bringing out inner beauty and all that. I don't think this story plays into any of her strength, and minimizes her into being flirty and romantic. Those are shade of her character, but they aren't pillars. There's a line in here where Rarity handwaves away Spike's crush on her that really irks me. Not a Sparity guy, but it feels straight-up OOC for Rarity to be that dismissive about Spike's feelings towards her. Twilight isn't much better. Every scene with her can be summarized as "damn I miss my wife )':^" This story very clearly wants to be RariTwi but by the end I'm not convinced that it needs to be. I feel like the ending is supposed to get this tearjerker reaction from me, but I'm left unmoved. I feel kind of icky, honestly.

I wonder what the figures would be if you excluded all the main/secondary characters and characters that had a significant role in an episode or any speaking roles. Leaving just the silent background ponies.

Regardless obsessing over the sex ratios of characters in a children’s cartoon to justify rgre and herding shit was always just an exercise is using rationalizations to justify being a bottom feeding degenerate.
>>
I guess it's a good thing I didn't publish my next chapter yesterday, kek.

>>43643928
>Dammit dammit dammit, why is writing so hard?
Double kek.

>I enjoy coming up with ideas for stories a lot and it's easy for me to jot down like three dozen different story ideas, but then when it actually comes to writing one the process is so grueling. Is that what it's like for everyone else too?
Of course it's easier to conceive an idea compared to birthing it.

>Hit 1070 words today but realizing the first 437 really don't count because it's just an outline of "Then this happens, then this happens, etc" and I actually have to turn all that into narrative.
Ah, I used to bother writing outlines, but now I just remember everything instead. For commissions, the conversation serves as a decent enough outline anyway.

>I'm really only writing for like an hour or less a day though, because I spend the rest of the day dreading it.
I as well, although I'm not dreading it. Getting one thousand words done in an hour is a decent goal, but I can exceed it when I'm in a really good mood and all.

>I don't have a good vocabulary so I'm already being redundant with descriptions and even using a thesaurus doesn't help much because I don't want the writing to feel thesaurus'd with words like "peremptory" instead of "proud."
I don't have any good advice here. A writer's supposed to have his good vocabulary before he starts writing. Your early work will torment you, get used to it.

>And comparing my writing to other stories I probably have way to much dialog compared to narrative because I can't write good descriptions so I'm relying on people thinking the dialog is funny/vaguely amusing. Plus Steven King said "never use adverbs because you won't be able to stop" and he was right because I've been writing with adverbs all my life and I absolutely can't stop or write a paragraph without them.
I derogatorily disregard such bad advice. Adverbs are fun. My latest chapter lacks dialogue entirely. Try doing that to get better at writing descriptions, say.

>Writing is NOT supposed to be a form of torture, right? How the hell does anyone do it?
Triple kek.

Stallions are physically stronger than mares, that's sexual dimorphism, not a gender role. If you take that out, then 5 is the most extreme case of what you could reasonably expect to find in a fic that's trying to make a comment on gender roles through RGRE. I also wouldn't expect that to work well, so for that kind of fic, it'd probably be 4.

However, you're ignoring the shorthand that RGRE has been distilled into, especially on /mlp/. What >>43643980 has found, and what the board has defined for itself to be RGRE, is not interested in any of the points except 1. That is, "RGRE = mares are starving for cock, so the green man just needs to fall into a pile of them to do the sex and never have another care"

Most people love RGRE when it is what it is supposed to be, a commentary on gender roles. Some posters who have been consumed by the culture war stopped loving it, but it was all the rage in the past, even the simplistic point 1 jokes. I remember the deluge of rape jokes surrounding the Bimbettes and that Justin Bieber pony, Feather Bangs. Now, the best you can say about them is that RGRE they like doesn't count to them as RGRE.

I also headcacon that the reason stallions are big and muscular despite being less useful than having a lot of magic is for body heat production. In real life, muscle mass directly correlates to heat generation, even at rest, which is why women tend to be more sensitive to the cold. This would be true for mares, too.
Stallions served as the herd hot water bottle in ancient Equestria, with their mare(s) and foals huddled against them at night for warmth. Their bulk also served well to break wind and keep their family out of it better. Also why we see stallions with notably furry fetlocks- stallions probably have thicker/longer coats, again for warmth.
The ideal stallion is the toastiest, cuddliest.

That's pretty cute. It leads well into emphasizing a standard masculine appearance - big, shaggy, yoked, etc. so while I do think it's not a great explanation on paper (ponies mostly seem to handle the cold with magic and technology, and I'd be very surprised if Equestria has evolution) it's a good shape to things to work from.

no it isn't. they EXCLUSIVELY use the word tribe to refer to the three pre-unification tribes as political entities. it's never once used to generically refer to what kind of pony a pony is. before equestria, there existed the unicorn, pegasus, and earth pony tribes, all of which were made up of a single type of pony, but after hearth's warming, the three tribes ceased to exist, as all three kinds of ponies unites into one nation.

Describe new things with multiple senses. At least two. Bar? Clattering glasses and feet sticking to the floor. Bakery? Fresh smells and array of goods on display. Try not to default to the same combination of senses. Novice writers sometimes fixate too much on the visual and it makes the world feel very 2D.
Use a thesaurus to find stronger, descriptive verbs to replace your weak verbs and the adverbs you prop them up with. Grabbed quickly -> Snatched. Jumped down -> Dove. Said angrily -> Spat.
If your adverbs are infesting your dialogue tags, try to rely more on action beats: "It could go either way," he said airily. -> He shrugged. "It could go either way."
Action beats are also good for splitting long dialogue and inserting some supporting description.

Thank God the PHP thing got fixed. That's not what I wanted to go out on.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/547815/hallucinatory-aleph-of-dreamed-histories

3.5/10. Caballeron, Dash, Daring, and Scootaloo find themselves trapped on a riverboat in the author's schizofic. Seriously. The schizo club needs to resurrect itself and read this fucking thing because I am almost 100% sure the author doesn't take his meds. The narration has this intense pretentious floweriness that saturates the whole story and makes it genuinely difficult to read. Caballeron may or may not be a pedophile who married Scootaloo and got her pregnant. Scootaloo is referred to by him as a filly, she's a filly in the cover art, and she's described as having a "delicate, small body" yet Dash is seemingly the only one who's revolted by this and there's timeline indications this is taking place 10+ years post-canon, so it might just be the schizophrenia talking.

I think the most frustrating thing about this fic is how great the tone is. There's a Lovecraftian horror fic vibe going on. In the background, Equestria is fraying apart. The Princesses are old and losing control while the nobles are starting to pick at the corpse. Caballeron is haunted by ceaseless dreams and visions. Daring has seemingly been corrupted by them as well as she previously stole a dark magic book from the place they're going to. Dash is the only sane person on this trip and she's too angry about the pedophilia thing to really pay attention to what's going on. in the end, it's heavily implied that thousands of years ago humanity lost a war with the ponies and were driven off and are now returning. Humanity as the "dug too deep" eldrich abomination. It's Yucca Mountain but without the magical radiation.

But the author's too much of a schizo to stick the landing and the fic instead eats itself and descends into this bizarre mindscrew ending where they fall into a portal that makes no sense and has no resolution to any of the plots. What a gigantic waste and squandering of a great setup. But I knew it would be. Fics with that level of pretentious narration always fuck up.

>>43643747
1 for me. I don't care what others say, the herding stuff is an interesting cultural idea. Just have to be careful not to have it descend into harem wish fulfillment. Socially, it doesn't make sense for the biologically stronger sex to really face any kind of gender discrimination.

It was a pretty good sandwich too, and you could tell the tuna was freshly packed. I still don't know what to make of that, but I guess he just really likes tuna.

Thoughts on deliberately violating grammar or writing rules for effect? Trying to make a moment feel impactful with a build up behind it, so I'm ending a phrase with a comma and starting a new line,

Like this!

What do you think? I know good writers can break the rules after they master the rules, but I'm by no means a good writer. I just can't think of better way to create that kind of effect in text.

I gave up on learning craft for the past few weeks. Now I just focus on finishing things. And finish fanfics I did. I finished chapters, and out even when they're half baked and have bad prose thats not even close to books.
>>
>>43647118
It really, really depends on the particular line for which you're trying to use this. In general, you should try to avoid stuff like that, because it's usually possible and a mark of skill to achieve the effects you want while still playing 'within the rules', so to speak.

Grammatical rules exist first and foremost for the sake of the reader's comprehension. While what you're trying to do might make sense to you, the writer, consider whether it would flow awkwardly or come across ambiguously to a reader who isn't expecting it.
>>
>>43647147
Please teach me your ways! I'm desperately trying to finish a story and every minute of progress is painful.

The one story I actually did finish years ago I wrote the bulk of in a single day in a Subway of all places because I could bring my laptop and get away from everything. Writing a clopfic in public felt weird but at least I could finish it. I might have to force myself to do something like that again.
>>
>>43647118
I think This only works if it is necessary in order to convey some quality or point your trying to express to the reader, and not doing it would make it less strongly or precisely expressed. It doesn’t work if the story of worse off with it being in there.
>>
>>43647155
My way I do it is this: Lower your standards, turn off your inner critic, and have a good idea that can sustain a story. Just write instead of plotting, and fluidly edit parts of the story without dividing it into drafts. If it isn't perfect but it's close enough to what you wanted, post it. If you have an impulse, indulge it in the writing, like a trope or something cool you want to. Don't try to force things before writing plans, and instead let it come out naturally, and capitalize on ideas that come out.

It's neat to see how far they've swung the ratios back with additions in the later seasons, but it doesn't actually change how incredibly imbalanced the ratios are in favor of mares on screen, most of the time. Pic related is probably between 200 and 300 mares with only eight stallions.
Only an idiot would need to be reminded that the practical reason for the imbalance is that the mare models were easier to make, on account of basically the entire cast being mares, but then again you can see right here that kind of idiot @ >>43643856
Yes, the entire ruling class of Equestria is mares. Also most other things, since you forgot the likes of Mayor Mare and Spitfire. And nearly all of the leadership of the non-pony nations is female.

The mare-stallion ratio consistently extended to the rest of the show, at least consistently enough to worldbuild on it being canon. While rewatching Winter Wrap Up I counted only six stallions in the song, with a couple dozen mares working alongside them. The world you build out of that observation, though, is a different story.

i think it's really funny when people use huge crowd shots like this as evidence for an imbalanced sex ratio because yeah, the whole crowd of hundreds of ponies is entirely mares, but also, it's the same 12 mares over and over. if someone wants to take
>we literally see it on screen
as evidence for an imbalanced ratio, they would also have to take the doppelgangers as canon too.
>>
>>43647310
Why are you acting like removing all the duplicates balances the sex ratio? Did you think at all about applying that argument to the picture?
>>
>>43647339
if you remove all the duplicates from the entire show you're left with a list of all unique ponies, which would be >>43644111, which is a mostly balanced ratio.
additionally, the entire point of using a huge, all female crowd as evidence for an imbalanced sex ratio is that you can point at it and say
>LOOK! it's literally in the show! that means it's canon!
while ignoring that if you want to use what the show literally shows us as the ultimate arbiter of canon, you have to actually commit to it, and say that not only is equestria almost entirely female, it's also almost entirely made up of the same 50 or so ponies over and over.
using crowds as evidence for a mostly female equestria but not going all the way and claiming a mostly clone equestria is basically saying
>obviously the fact that the whole crowd is doppelgangers isn't canon, but the fact that they're all mares is. in the true, canon version of events, the whole crowd would consist of hundreds of different mares instead of the same 12, but it would still ONLY be mares.

The only way in which I don't go all the is to include all the seasons. I don't think that balance chart is valid because the mare/stallion ratio was memetically established many years before the vast majority of the ponies in the show were rigged. I do think that in the true, canon version of events, there were maybe 2 stallions out of every dozen ponies in the crowd, and that Equestria is made up of an alarmingly small number of combinations of coat colors and mane styles. And that this concept dovetails in a very entertaining way into how mares are similarly overrepresented in important roles.
>>
I can't believe that the show made to sell toys to little girls would opt to have a majority female cast, and would extend that decision to the background filler characters. The team was surely mindful of deep lore implications of this decision, and weren't just being time conscious while also catering to the preference of the target demographic.

>it isn't possible that these mostly related ponies who have similar jobs in similar industrie might look similar from a long distance
>clearly 88% of them don't actually exist and my headcanon that clearly contradicts what we see on screen is the incontrovertible, hard-canon truth!
Reminder also that outside of the show there was a pretty strong leaning towards the possibility of ponies having litters or something like that, since the design intention is that Pinkie and Marble were born at the same time but aren't twins because they're not human.
>>43647373
>while ignoring that if you want to use what the show literally shows us as the ultimate arbiter of canon, you have to actually commit to it, and say that not only is equestria almost entirely female, it's also almost entirely made up of the same 50 or so ponies over and over.
Not at all. Nowhere in the show do they say that all these ponies are literally the same pony over and over again. If you're asking us to say
>most ponies look like most other ponies
and
>many ponies look very similar to other ponies
then uh, yeah, they do. To within the fidelity of the show the vast majority of ponies are on the same model, you can easily understand why mares seem to take their mane so seriously and are big into clothes for fancy events about getting noticed since for most of them these are by far their best ways to stand out.

4/10. Daring releases an ancient evil that destroys Ponyville. I think. From the synopsis, even the author doesn't really know what's going one, which makes me wonder why he wrote it. It's a strange stream of consciousness thing with Dash (?) as the POV character. Not a very enjoyable read given how vague and confusing it is, though I do like starting the "Ponyville is destroyed by a monster" horror fic right at the end and sparing me all the horror fic bullshit. Daring also doesn't show up until the last paragraph so she shouldn't be tagged.

>end

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/502449/smoke-records

5/10. An OC trying to impress his mare friend into dropping the space between those words tries to track down Daring Do audio books. I got tag baited again. At least in that changeling one, Daring was actually there for a scene. She doesn't even show up in a book scene in this one like in some of these. I have no idea why she's tagged in this, other than to bait people into thinking a canon character's in it. The story's fairly meh but the grammar's okay at least. There's not much drama, not much comedy, and only a bit of romance at the end. So the Daring tag wasn't the only one that was inaccurate.

2/10. Daring and Caballeron team up to retrieve an ancient mask artifact from a shadow monster. The story has this bizarre tense thing going on that really ruins it. It shifts around from present to past at the drop of a hat. Made it almost unbearable to read. The rest of the writing definitely has that amateurish feel as well.

I came across this a few weeks ago and it's a rather unremarkable fic. For some reason the author decided to split it into a bunch of other fics but it's basically just "What if Flash Sentry was childhood friends of Twilight?" I read a few chapters of it and it was okay from what I saw. But what really stands out is it's absolutely fucking massive tvtropes page. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/TheFlashSentryChronicles
It's obviously written by the author, given how few views the fic has, but the YMMV part has some actually negative things to say about the fic. Either the author is actually able to self-criticize (impossible) or there's some really dedicated fans for whatever reason.
Also according to said tvtropes page the fic gets fucking retarded.

Not really, because an animation error is something that explicitly contradicts other elements from the show. Erroria is an animation error, Cherry Berry changing races in different episodes is an animation error, there being more mares than stallions is not because it does not create an internal contradiction.
>>
>>43648048

The gender of most characters is in the script and storyboard, while animation errors are not. They're also confirmed by official materials outside of strict canon, like toys and some of the printworks. Leaving aside that very many animation errors are perfectly plausible, they aren't something which we have multiple points of independent verification for like character designs or the transcript.

It's truly unbelievable how assblasted you seem to get over people accepting the things that happen in the show as having happened in the show. And again, a world where basically every pony that matters is a mare (incontrovertible) is less strange in light of the fact that the considerable majority of ponies are mares.

>The gender of most characters is in the script and storyboard
for important characters, yes, but important characters do not make up the majority of ponies in equestria. we don't see most of the ponies in equestria, and most of the crowds we see are made entirely of copy/pasted ponies that only a true retard would take as canon-as-seen. if you only consider ponies we see who's identities matter, the ratio is close enough to 1:1 that if you consider that we only see a tiny portion of the ponies of equestria, and that tiny portion might not be perfectly representitive of the whole, the real ratio probably is just 1:1.
for an example of what i mean, consider the wonderbolts. we see 9 female wonderbolts, and 7 male wonderbolts. this does not mean equestria's gender ratio is 9:7. it could be 1:1 and there's slightly more mares than expected in the wonderbolts, easily explained by a small sample size, or it could be something like 10:1, and there's massively more stallions than expected.
>a world where basically every pony that matters is a mare (incontrovertible)
your statement isn't incontrovertible just because you say it is. this statement depends on your definition of matters.
>is less strange in light of the fact that the considerable majority of ponies are mares.
a disproportionately large number of important ponies being mares through sheer coincidence is a lot easier to reconcile than the massive absurd ramifications of an imbalanced sex ratio. such a thing genuinely makes zero sense at all, either on a biological level, or on a cultural level considering the pony society we see. ignoring things we see in the show when they don't make sense on any level is a necesary skill to have to appreciate the show's world.
you do not have this skill, and thus you are unable to appreciate its world. you are incapable of seeing equestria as a world that could be, and instead only see the incredibly limited view the show gives us.
if your ultimate logic is that if we see it, it happened, then you must also accept the inverse: if we don't see it, it didn't happen. there are zero off-screen events. when the camera cuts away from a scene, nothing happens to the ponies it cut away from. they don't do or say anything, they don't even exist until their next scene.
to deny this is to accept that the show doesn't show us everything that happens in equestria, which is to accept that what we see in the show is not the sole factor on whether something is true in equestria or not, which is to accept that not everything you see in the show is necessarily representitive of canon equestria.

The human ruling class is mostly males, guess females make up only 25% of the population. The crowd at a sport event is mostly male, guess females are vastly outnumbered. The ponies in MLP look 2D, I guess we're supposed to take everything at face value and assume they'd be 2D irl too.

The quality of these threads would drastically improve if the tunafag was decapitated.

From my perspective it doesn't really matter if the gender imbalance thing is "canon" or not (because it's a kids show and that's clearly a fanon thing regardless of screenshots), what matters is how well the concept is used. The real issue is how poorly it seems to be done the vast majority of the time.

Don't see too many fics touching on how visually jarring the world of MLP would be to their vision and brain alike
(when they go the 2D route)
