-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

Loitering around after seeing a Samurai Troopers 30MF Yamato review, I've been thinking, what if the 30MF Shion figure will also come with an alternate Ryusei head and shoulder parts? Considering how long they developed these figures and Shion already entering final production stage, adding a few extras because Shion and Ryusei had equal time as Samurai Troopers (12 episodes each per user for extremely convoluted reasons) might be a special bonus. Just hope they actually make the original Samurai Troopers next year.

Haven't had a lot of time lately but I've gotten some (mostly invisible in this picture) work done on the torso connection and shoring up the fit of things. Still a bit unhappy with how its dong is hanging, need to tuck it in a bit. The stomach now interlocks over the back binder assembly and has three support columns so it's all pretty well secured while still coming apart easily. Not much waist rotation anymore but who needs that for this sorta monstrosity, still has a little in the chest anyway.

Also I thought gatlings on the shoulders might be pretty cool. I've got some other ones I'll try out this weekend and see what I like.
>>
>>24049824
Also just for fun. Don't think I'm going to give it this gun though it's definitely suitably sized to use it. Thinking about it plugging into the chest Doven Wolf style would be pretty rad, or plugging into the shoulder, but I've got another gun idea in mind and been tossing around something else to use this for sometime so prolly not.

If they manage to fix TR-5 version, i'm gonna cum. It is probably the most challenging design because in order to make this work without an action base, you need like, metal pegs for the arms.

Why doesn’t Bandai incorporate some metal into their kits? That ZZ full armor Gundam slouches under its own weight. I mean Chinese picks up the slack so whateves.

Complete newfag here, how much did I fuck up by getting picrel as my first kit? I'm familiar with scale models and wargaming miniatures, but wanted to see what the fuss was about.
>>
>>24050036
It's fine. It's a good model, people here are just purists about greebles and 'anime accuracy' and will bitch about the design.
>>
>>24050036
RG might kind of suck for the tiny parts.
>>
>>24050036
just take it slow
don't force assembly of any parts that feel tight

>>
>>24050036
small pieces might get boring real fast, hope you're patient
>>
>>24050041
The tiny parts are still more accessible compares to Gen 4 AC and military models.
>>
>>24050036
You're not a complete newbie given your experience with scale models, but Gunpla is all about perfect sub-millimeter tolerances so hamhands will fuck you over good. RG kits are also somewhat expensive, so if you fuck up then you're out a bunch of money. If you haven't already started it yet, I would recommend holding off and buying a HG kit first to cut your teeth on. Those are cheaper and more lenient in terms of parts count and ease of assembly. Plus, if you do make a mistake, you don't feel nearly as bad about it.

So, what is Aoshimas reprint policy like? Do they reprint shit in to the ground like Bandai? Debating buying something at scalper prices or waiting.

>>24050119
They reprint everything but it can take years longer than Bandai. Depending on how the scalper price is it might be worth it instead of waiting potentially a decade

MG Guncannon restocked finally let's fucking go
>>
>>24050183
It's a crime that it never got a 2.0, especially since the Guntank and G-Fighter have modern versions. 25-year old MG kits are a travesty, even modern HGUC kits blow them out of the water.
>>
>>24050187
It doesn't really need an update. It's one of those old kits that are still great, kind of like the MG doms(which are still superior to the 1.5s that use the shitty new hands.)
>>
>>24050192
Plus it's still like 50 canuckistani pesos whereas any new MG is 75+ as a rule
>>
So that Red Hood from earlier was a model kit? With the large diversity of how figures are made for NIKKE, now I wonder if we'll ever get model kits for the Counters members. The original designs would work, but I say, surprise me if they're going for the now four (including Queen Modernia) Over-Specs.

Just finished this. Thought it'd be a 1:1 of the RG long range fin funnel, and boy was I wrong. The surface is typical chinese 3rd party quality of fuck your sanding abrasives, and fitting is either loose or extremely tight. The internal frame has a long seam right down the middle and you can clearly see it sticking out, and two other moving parts have seams that need welding, though maybe I can get away with just making a channel to hide the seam.

They managed to get increased upward shoulder movement for Zero as well as a decent double knee bend but they didn't have that for all the prior ones afaik (Dragon's a retool of Z, Kaiser's a retool of Great), and Jeeg suffers from its design such that it can't even do a forward kick that well, poor guy

I doubt it. That shot is really flattering and doesn't show the mistakes I made and how long it took since I was so unprepared. Whatever you're doing is probably better on closer inspection.
There's gaps where that weren't sealed by cementing, there's areas I didn't sand properly prior to putting on primer. There's visible brush marks, pooling, some dust accumulation that I failed to remove before continuing painting after a week break, spill over of paint and probably things I'm not even aware of.
While trying to figure out the thing where you put only a bit of paint on the brush and then lightly brushing to make it look like scratching I was initially using way too much so it just looks splotchy rather than weathered.

I like the varnishes, the paints are a mixed bag. They're definitely the most durable acrylic I've used, more so than Vallejo's Mecha Color or even the alcohol based Tamiya/Aqueous.
The colors have really good covering power for an acrylic. Shading is really where I'm still trying to wrap my head around them, lots of tip dry even with their retarder thinner. It's also incredibly sensitive to being thinned, very easy to over do it and it basically behaves like any old water based acrylic once you do that where it's useless.
I'm definitely not going to replace my usual paint choices but I can definitely see myself incorporating some of their colors into my workflow. Well except for the varnish, Vallejo Mecha Matt varnish can go right into the trash where it belongs.
>>
>>24051283
>I like the varnishes,
Wow so their varnishes are good? They might be one of my main targets because, after doing some basic math, the 210ml prethinned matt varnish is cheaper than other water based topcoat like mr hobby aqueous, acrysion etc.
>>
>>24051283
>Vallejo Mecha Matt varnish can go right into the trash where it belongs.
It just needs some finesse is all. Put it on in incredibly thin coats and give it a minute between them. It'll matte up really nice.

I really like the Matte, the Gloss is also pretty good but Alclad Aquagloss is a fine alternative. The Matte is not a super dull flat like the Vallejo Mecha Matte is, it's not quite a satin though. I like it though since it doesn't completely kill the vibrancy of colors and particularly it doesn't wash out shading as badly as the Vallejo stuff does. It's also very durable for a matte, the gloss can actually be wetsanded if you need that option.
>>24051297
My issue with the Vallejo varnish has been more the propensity for it to clog in any of my airbrushes. I'll likely try it again in the near future but I was having tons of problems with it even after running it through a vortex mixer for several minutes, trying a plethora of different thinner mixes, different pressures, and different nozzle sizes/airbrushes. From what I can tell the matting agent is sinking to the bottom of the paint cup and turning into a sediment which just gums up the whole airbrush. Their Gloss and Satin varnishes haven't given me any issues but the Matte has been a nightmare trying to get it to function consistently.

Dumb panel lining question that I am sure has been solved elsewhere a billion times, but I'm primarily looking for a yes/no answer.

I know the general rule of thumb is to panel line on the sprues/runners *before* snipping them out. This helps avoid the problems with micro-fractures in the plastic that appear post-snipping. However, I also know Tamiya panel lining can potentially be caustic to plastic (with ABS being the biggest concern) regardless.

So here's my question, if I am using Tamiya panel liner, should I snip everything out and then airbrush each piece with a gloss varnish before lining or is it fine to apply on the (non-ABS) plastic while still attached to the sprue/runner?

I'm fine with either way (even though the latter will save a lot of time by cutting out the gloss varnish step), but was curious as to what people here feel. Regardless, I'll be applying a matte varnish at the very end.
>>
>>24051843
Don't even bother lining if you arent going to paint it.
>>
>>24051843
Yes, a gloss coat before panel lining will help protect the plastic. Preferably lacquer (it's all I've ever used) but I think acrylic will be fine if you let it cure fully before panel lining.
Stress and microfractures in the plastic is what actually causes the issues with tamiya panel liner, so panel lining on the runner generally avoids the opportunity of introducing those microfractures from the snipping/assembly process, but if the runners are damaged from transit the parts could be damaged by the panel liner.
>>
>>24051843
>I know the general rule of thumb is to panel line on the sprues/runners *before* snipping them out.

Never heard of that before and I build these models since last 10 years or something. Almost as dumb as painting on sprue. As for panel liner, Tamiya thinner can cause problems only if it either lacks proper way to evaporate, which happens if it goes between parts, inside joints, etc or when it saps into already stressed sections. Layer of varnish, especially lacquer one, is more than enough to protect your plastic if you are that afraid of damaging it. It also helps with later cleanup, weathering (if you like) and is generally good practice if you don't mind extra time spent on it + drying so I don't see other reasons to skipping that.

That being said, I was applying liner to bare plastic before numerous times and never had any problems, even old kits on the shelf are fine up to this day. But again, it definitely won't hurt to place protective layer like that.
>>
Oh and if you don't mind, white spirit is generally less aggressive towards plastic than Tamiya thinner so you can make your own liners with oil paints diluted with white spirit. Somewhat pointless if you already have panel liner but I use this method myself.
>>
>>24051850
>>24051853

Thanks for the head's up! I feel a lot better going into this.

Also interesting to know about the lacquer/acrylic varnish difference. I was primarily going to use AK's acrylic gloss varnish (and later matte) with my airbrush since I'm coming from the Warhammer scene and already have much of the tools.

With this in mind, I'll cut all the pieces out of the sprues and then apply a gloss varnish to the pieces I am panel lining first. I picked up a RG Tallgeese as my test run, so I'll be sure to share how airbrushing with acrylic varnish comes across (with obvious time for it to properly cure before applying the panel lining).

Thanks again! Getting tired of spending dozens of hours painting individual Orks after 5 years, so Gunpla looks to be a fun palette cleanser.
>>
>>24051819
I guess that's to be expected really, maybe a supporting stand arm or two to distribute the weight would help?
I wonder if when Bandai inevitably makes it they'll include a Woundwort with reinforced joints, like how the Psycho Blade version had some adjustments.
>>
>eyeing up a HG in my backlog
>already have 1 MG primed on my paint station and a RG waiting for decals
why am I like this
>>
>>24051843
It's before assembly, not before snipping. You are largely fine lining bare plastic with liner as long as you are doing it before putting shit together and you don't let it have massive pools. Doubly so if it's bandai's PS plastic, but even ABS is fine.
>>
>>24051863
All they have to do is to not putting RG leveled innerframe to the weapon cargo.
>>
>>24051859
The thing with acrylic/lacquer varnish is the same as with acrylic/lacquer paints - that lacquer is more durable while their thinner is highly aggressive and WILL eat away acrylic paint under it in most cases. The only times when it won't is when applied by thin layers via airbrush over already cured acrylic paint. When people recommend lacquer as protective layer, is because of its durability. Still, many painters successfully use acrylic varnish as protective layer for weathering with oil paints/washes/panel liners so if you already have those, it's totally okay. Personally I paint with acrylics due to their safe nature (no fumes, only have to care for particles but P3 mask is enough) and never used protective layer when applying oil washes. However, already had two situations where cleaning (with white spirit) oil washes from acrylic covered surface would result in stripping some of already applied paint but I blame it on rather how it was probably still wet, thin layer of paint (applied by airbrush) and being a bit too rough. Normally white spirit does not reactivate acrylic paints (unless you use Army Painter shit but you shouldn't in first place). With gundams so far it posed no problems. Notice that I said "with cleaning", just applying oil washes like panel liner was completely fine. But since you are asking for advice, I would rather take you safer way.
>>
>>24051819
I've built enough Woundworts to know that poor thing is screaming under its own weight. Still, glad they made it. I'll probably give those containers to my Typhoeus custom
>>
>>24051904

Thank you for the very in-depth breakdown of the science behind lacquer varnishes and paints with gunpla! I'm glad to hear others have had success with applying acrylic varnishes via airbrushing. I'm in the same boat with preferring them on my end: I got tired of waiting for optimal humidity conditions for spray cans (to avoid frosting) and I generally feel like my respirator helps protect better against it.

I am planning on using AK Interactive White Spirit for gently cleaning up the liner once it fully cures and, if for whatever reason it causes a problem with accidentally stripping varnish, lord knows I have enough Biostrip to clean it all off and start fresh.

I'm also glad even the gunpla community recognizes most Army Painter stuff is shit.

>>
>>24051922
>>24051920
You may not need to wait that long depending on how much thinner you use. I've waited just a couple of days and had no problems. You should also remove excess linseed oil from your paints, by placing them on a piece of cardboard or another surface that can absorb the oil. I wait about half an hour after doing this and then use the paints.
There are also dedicated hobby oils, like Mr. Weathering Color, Abeilung 502, and AK Interactive. These don't need the aforementioned prep work to remove linseed oil and do dry much faster but are also a bit more expensive in terms of volume.

It's probably a lot more comparable to weathering than painting
>>
>>24052052
It depends. Makeup is a lot of color theory, what matches your skin tone, and manipulation of color, light, and shadows to best emphasize your natural features. People who don't really know about makeup think it's covering stuff up, but really the best makeup is enhancing what you already have. Contouring is a good example of this.

Eyeshadow is a whole thing in and of itself.

>>24052059
Not that I'm saying weathering is covering stuff up, but yeah it is a lot of light and dark emphasizing on a three dimensional surface.

Are actual Frame Arms (the original mecha kits, not the girlpla) kit really just rarely reprinted?

I got the recent-ish Exosuit Baselard kit. Where it offers both the original Frame Arms mecha and the Girlpla version in one package while having a mecha cockpit adaptor of sorts where you can turn the original Frame Arms mecha into a powersuit mecha for the Frame Arm Girlpla.
The neat thing about the adaptor is that its compatible with pretty much all existing Frame Arms kit, both the Mecha and Girlpla. So you can convert any of the original Mecha into powersuits for the Girlpla. So I've been wanting to do so for some of my Frame Arms Girl kits. But the thing is, I can barely fucking find any listings of the original Frame Arms mecha themselves anymore.

>>
>>24052182
The last reprint they did was the Ray Falx. Otherwise you're not going to see them reprinted in years. Kotobukiya has completely killed and discontinued the line in favor of Frame Arms Girl because that one was making tons more money which is sad because Frame Arms was basically a precursor to 30MM but with a lot more varied lineup of mech designs and a little bit of interesting lore. Kotobukiya had apparently tried to make a comeback by making a new successor line called Forme Arms but they also killed that one off immediately after one or two kits got released which were also very hard to get. Hexa Gear and I guess Zoids HMM remains their only non-Girlpla model kit line
>>
>>24052214
Frame Arms lacks it's own identity since the robots look like parodies of several different franchises, it is difficult to emotionally invested in the line when everything looks so random. Ironically FAG gives it a more consistent aesthetic when it is supposed to be the otherway around.

It's just too over designed. The thighs have bird faces on them, the chest looks like a goofy face with a big nose, every square inch has far too much detail added. It falls into the same Chinese traps that most bootlegs do, way too much overgreebling and overdetailing in every possible place and "artistic liberties" in ways that make it look worse. A lot of these are the kinds of things that an 8-year old would think look awesome but actually are stupid (in a bad way, not a good way). Moreso since the Devil Gundam doesn't actually need to look like some high-tech piece of engineering, it's literally made of DG Cells that can change form whenever it wants to. This is entirely the wrong aesthetic.

>>24052371
The color shades are subtly different (most obvious change is in the verniers), but I can definitely tell the difference. The "after" version uses more dull shades that make it look closer to a Zaku, the original's colors are deeper. The lighting is also doing a lot of heavy lifting, but in the "before" image you can still tell that it has the plastic toy look that Bandai has never taken the effort to address.

Panel Liner's dream
>>
Loving the tools/accessory rabbit hole that Gunpla has taken me down.

So... scribing. This looks to be something that can greatly help with both deepening current lines *and* be something I can use in my main Warhammer hobby (got to love Space Marine armor lining tapering off). I'm seeing a bunch of different types of chisels, however such as regular, wide, ones that look more like blades, ones designed for deburring, etc.

Does anyone have any experience for recommendations with rescribing panel lines? Not looking at doing anything new, but rather making sure what is there looks solid. However, if most people here think it's a pointless exercise for anyone outside of the most elite/advanced then feel free to let me know!

MMZ is probably going to be either Copy X or Leviathan. Can't recall any other characters that warrant a kit from there.

unironically cry about it, this is still better than any alternative

There are a myriad of alternativities that don't fuck over consumers but they're harder to implement and it's less convenient for the 1%. You just like to take it up the ass like a gay nigger.

How was the starflower build? Was considering picking it up as it gives me some Blame! LVL.9 Cibo vibes.

Hello /gpg/. I recently got some Bandai Water slide decals for some high grades I'm working on. First one I'm working on at the moment is Rising Freedom and my question is is are there any directions on where to apply these decals? I'm not seeing any instructions on the packet.

How do people paint shit like this? When you have a model kit where the shin area has separation and tou have to glue it or fill the gap with sprue glue and sand it down and fuse it together, then what??? because you need to have the other pieces it connects too already inside of it also. So how can you paint everything? I’m going insane trying to figure out how this happens or makes sense. Think knee joint being assembled and put inside of the leg which you now fused together. how do you paint all of this bevause tou can’t seperate it
