    [Hide] [Show All]

It's been almost 10 years since I went down this path.
When I began, it was 2018, and I was still a young teen who watched Steven Universe on the TV, and other shows. I had basically watched cartoons my whole life. So I knew, I wanted to make my own show one day.
I had hope back then, because this was before AI, before streaming was massive, before every network I grew up on died.
I have spent my entire art journey pushing myself. I started knowing nothing, but I just drew, I even made animations without understanding anything about animation at all.
And through it all I have watched everything I knew and love come to crumble.
10 years later, I am in college. I'm okay at drawing, but I don't know why I am doing this.
Teachers tell me the industry will recover, but I'm not sure.
Am I doing this to make a series? That's what I wanted to do when I started, but where would I go when the networks don't exist anymore?
Do I make it independently? I tried that... twice now, but making something on that scale simply isn't possible without a team or money.
At this point, I've come to the conclusion that it's not possible. I might as well just make a webcomic instead of having my ideas realized as animation.
The truth it, it saddens me. I feel like there is no place for me in the animation industry because people who have experience are always gonna have 1-up on me. Even in the indie space, I feel Glitch prioritzes hiring experience, not training the next generation of artists.
So... at the end of all this, I'm not giving up. But, I realize there simply is no opportunities. There's nothing I can do about that either.
I guess I'll just be a hermit comic artist that knows animation until things get better.

that's incredibly homophonic and insensitive you big it!

Train an ai model on your style then just ai gen it and pretent you drew it yourself. Block anyone who says you didn't, it would only take a week or two to go over every frame and remove ai mistakes which is still insanely good turn around time.

You worry too much. Why call yourself an artist if you don't like drawing anymore?
    >>
    >>8064677
Anon, indie animations are blowing right now. Kickstarter is filled with projects way above demanded money. Wtf you talking about?

i got into it last year and it's pretty clear that physical multimedia art is the way to go. if you can figure out drawing you can figure that out.

I'm thinking of going for a teaching degree (art) next winter semester.

Wonder if it is better to just ape out and focus on art without any safety net. it feel stupid to study something you don't 100% want, while you leave your currently safe job that is better paid than a teacher, because you want to join an atelier.

study for a teacher degree while working -> then leave the job to learn at an atelier
    vs
paint more after the job, then quit and join an atelier without a safety net degree.

One thing is certain: I want to focus on art for a few years. But rejoining the workforce is a very scary outlook with society collapsing. That said I had bottom tier jobs before and I don't mind working in construction, night shift dishwasher, prep cook, ...
Maybe there really is no reason to worry. The office is the little death.

2 different anons, I hijacked his. The college thing activated my neurons.

Also university is free here, so it isn't that big of a sacrifice. Paid by the boomers and wagies.

In my opinion I need the structure of school to get anything done but that's just me, school feels pointless sometimes and I have assignments that just genuinely don't matter because I won't be doing that thing again or I already know the thing but I am still getting somewhere with learning.
    >>
    >>8064677
you made shows twice right? show me your ideas, show me your work, we cant help you if play mr mysterious

That's a big problem. The degrees have a lot if filler material. For me the teaching degree also wouldn't be for getting better at art, I could draw and paint myself... but the paper with the signature and seal is what makes it so valuable. Atelier studies on the other side are much more useful if you want to fully immerse in academic drawing and painting. You have actually skilled teachers and likeminded, ambitious students there.
    >>
    >>8071611
They should invent something like a 3 month course that gives you the "paper" so you can lord it over people, because 4+ years is ridiculous for what you get .
    >>
    >>8071478
Try online courses, I did some on domestika and they were good for learning individual really good bits of how to design or paint
    >>
    >>8071617
Even one year would be reasonable. There used to be associate degrees. Though it's not the same. A more intense, accelerated programme would be a solution. It's just needlessly spread over so many years were you could be working. University feels like a remnant from a better time when you could buy a house as a dishwasher.

Don't go to university if you're not from a good family, retards. If you're from a shit poor family then it's not for you, go dig ditches or whatever. How it always was in human history.
