    Dithering

Specifically it's ordered checkerboard dithering. There are lots of cool patterns out there to increase the total color depth in unique ways. As far as details go blue noise is usually the best for details. Depending on the hardware your working with the pattern can change. As an example on older 8 bit CPU's checkered dithering creates a harsh rainbow effect, so it's usually avoided.

Got any dithering patterns you like?

I’m partial to Floyd-Steinberg out of sheer nostalgia
You can try a bunch at https://guysie.github.io/opendithering/

just remember, you have to scale your image up before applying ordered dithering

I'm a big fan of Z1 an ordered stair step dithering myself. It has a very lithographic feel when compared to other rougher patterns.

I usually run multiple passes when dithering to try and get the best results by over and under saturating an image then manually painting the finer details in by hand.
