Best resources for learning Linux?

Take your entire fist
Curl it up into a ball
Shove it directly into your ass (this may take several hours)
What was your question again?

ChatGPT is good enough without paying.

You'll remember cd, nano, sudo systemctl stuff... Mostly you're going to be copy and pasting commands from GPT. Which is really fine. The purpose of a computer obviously is that you use it to do useful stuff

To learn Linux you need manic episodes you experience for a week every month and then you feel need to lock down everything.

This reminds me of this channel I ran into, I think it was a gamedev channel I forget. But the guy would do regular videos but sometimes he'd shave his face and crossdress. I thought him and his "gf" looked very similar at first before I realized it was just him. Wish I could remember the name of the channel it was pretty funny.

Documentation and wikis, in my personal experience
Videos are just too superficial and ephemeral. Doing a single Gentoo installation while carefully reading the wiki is going to teach you so much it's kind of crazy. After reading the Gentoo install guide and the source mage install guide I felt completely comfortable installing pretty much any system from a chroot tarball.
Not to say videos aren't useful, they are to me, but I find them more useful to be sure that there's not something missing in the documentation or if there's an easier way to do one thing (the only install guide I have ever seen mention cfdisk is the exherbo one, while all video guides I've seen use cfdisk. Fucking hell, Source Mage tells you to use parted for some cursed reason)

Usecase for installing from tarball? You gonna do it one time and forget in a couple of months.

Fun
understand the system
installing any distro that offers a tarball from literally any iso (you can install Gentoo from an Ubuntu iso if you want, but the alpine virt iso is the best imo) or no iso/bootable media at all (you can ctrl+alt+f2, login as root, resize partitions, format and mount the new root partition, cd into the root, wget/curl -O the "stage file", untar, mount boot, prepare to chroot, chroot and keep going from there)
watching the untar process with the --verbose flag (fun)

Sounds pointless? At what point do you actually have it (the computer) do something useful?
>>
>>110199386
Well what do you do with it? There is mo need to fix or make anything if everything is working. I know that sounds like a failure of imagination but I think people just don't have any clear direction on what to do.
>>
>>110200466
>Sounds pointless
You don't always have bootable media (a USB stick, CD/DVD) to burn the iso into. That way you can install some distros with that method instead, and some distros even have that as the sole option (joborun, source mage), although almost all mainstream ones offer an iso with an installer, which is more convenient if you can burn it
>At what point do you actually have it (the computer) do something useful?
That will be only after installation is finished for the most part, and depend on the distribution. Fedora and Ubuntu distribute tarballs, so I guess you could use the system normally with them, and Gentoo (and source-based distros, generally) can reliably be hyperoptimized to fit your role if you know what you're doing
In Ubuntu, as an example, you get a Ubuntu base system after you untar the tarball, mount boot and chroot, and from there you can just install everything you need with apt install (kernel, bootloader) all the way into a fully functional DE/WM of your discretion. After that, it's regular Ubuntu.

He is spitting facts. I never installed from tarball (lazy bitch), but the last year I installed and used Void Linux. I learned A LOT just by the initial installation process.

It was pretty usable, most of the time. And if I encountered a problem I just google it and that's it. If you are not retarded ofc... Anyways, yeah, the just reading the Arch Wiki helps too

not everyone wants to larp as a system dev, the chance of fuckups is monumental

maybe something that has a irl usecase instead of meme hobby distro

that's like aspiring to aerospace engineering and a bunch of fat tards recommend you to study their home made airplane made out of a moped with plywood wings. and if you ask why they say thats their forum culture.

It's from fuckups/mistakes that you learn tho.
And VMs exist to make those fuckups cheap and to be an environment you can just try shit out in
Isn't the point of the thread to discuss resources for learning linux? All I'm suggesting is a method to learning how it works under the hood
It IS somewhat disconnected from learning your way around the GUI of your distro of choice, and just using is as a daily driver desktop, which is completely fine too and is a separate skill (you can know how to install Arch with nothing but shell commands and still not know how to use GNOME3)
>>
Read The Linux Command Line book. It goes over everything and it's free.
>>
>>110200784
Well, I wasn't really saying you should USE Gentoo, more that you should install Gentoo by following the handbook, because that teaches you how Linux itself works under the hood with a lot of attention to detail.
The topic of the thread is "Best resources for learning Linux?", not "What's the most convenient and well supported distro iso?".
Gentoo, and source-based distros in general, will never be as quick and convenient as binary-based distros, as compiling just takes time. It genuinely takes less than 10 minutes to install Slackware with the setup installer if you already what you want from it, and portage/Sorcery/paludis/whatever will NEVER be as fast as any binary-based package manager (apt, pacman, zypper, XBPS, etc)
And it is true that all the (little) optimization you can squeeze out of Gentoo isn't that noticeable unless you're running it in a potato, and at that point it'll just take actual hours, if not days (not an exaggeration), to compile anything. It's only really useful if you're really autistic about something like gaming performance/efficiency as a server and don't care about all the knowledge and time it takes to set it up.

I followed your instructions and it made me cum. Now what?
