fucks sake spent an hour and a shameful amount of money arguing with Claude about the geometry of my woodworking projectturns out that when I said "curve" it decided all on its own and for no reason that it HAS to be a circular arc, which ended up imposing constraints that made the rest of the geometry not work, and it was just spinning in circles trying to reinterpret things to get it to work and throwing the resulting nonsense at me. with that completely baseless assumption out of the way, everything worksAI really is just awful at spatial reasoning and geometry, I ask its opinion to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious and ot ends up with shit like this
>>3011427I bought some rubberized plates for my home gym, and the problem is that they have this strong rubber smell (If you've been to a gym, you know it).Is there a way to get rid of that? I've tried scrubbing it with hot soapy water, and it kinda worked, but the smell came back after a day or so.
>>3011514Does the rubber smell like endocrine cancer? Or does it have more of a malignant lymphoma smell? Either way should have gone with classic steel.
>>3011464I'm mostly here for the home maintenance stuff, but I also dew and make paracord stuff. Apartment dwelling means no workshop.
How much airflow does a fridge/freezer combo actually need. My fridge fits in the nook extremely snugly so I figure I should put some holes in the back of the side walls so it can get some airflow. The manual just says "5cm around each side". If I wack a 10x20cm or so hole in the top and the bottom it should be fine, right?
>>3011508a contest of wit, young verses old, assuming you have enough thick skinned individuals to perticipate
>>3011522It likely radiates heat from the side. Look at a FLIR picture of a refrigerator. You might need that inch around the side. If you're really stuffed, you could probably add some kind of supplemental fan to blow air into some crack.
>>3011531Oh gross. I might have to get creative.
What do you guys think is the proper ratio of TSP and water to prepare a wood sided house for painting? I bought Savogran TSP-PF which says it's formulated for heavy duty cleaning and preparing painted surfaces for repainting. Their ratio is 1/4 cup TSP to 2 gallons warm water. Now that the house is spot primed and ready for paint I see a more common ratio is 1/2 cup TSP per 2 gallons, which might mean I used only half strength. Will this cause any potential adhesion problems for the new paint, like not dulling or etching the old paint enough? What's on there is 15 year old latex satin which looked pretty dull already. I ran a palm sander with some 80 grit across the clapboards today to try and knock down any obvious sheen I could see but that won't get everything. Had a thought to mix up a stronger ratio and rewash the house tomorrow but don't want to cause any issues with the oil based primer. At least I'm only doing one side of the house so it wouldn't be a total screw up.
>>3011510Couldn't you have just sketched it out yourself?
>>3011541I had a sketch, and I guess I could have drawn everything to scale and taken measurements off that, but instead I tried to get aclaude to help me figure out the exact angles I need, because trigonometry can be hard. It's worked for me before, I just describe the shape and known measurements and it figured out the unknowns for me, and sanity check the cuts I intend to do.Problem was, one convex curved bit (not even related to the angle I wanted, so I just told it it's convex between this and that point and how I plan to cut that) wouldn't have fit without intersecting with another part if it were a circular arc (which Claude assumed on its own for no reason). So Claude decided it must actually be concave and not convex. But then my plan of cuts would make no sense so it decided to start moving things around. And then...RLHF and optimizing for agentic workflows has done a number on AI tools, even if you tell them to ask, they're DESPERATE to avoid asking clarifying questions and will just guess and assume and guesswork and hallucinate their way to some answer, no matter how stupid

What's a decent budget detector? I would rather go ahead and spend a little more and not have to upgrade when I decide I like it because I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it
>>3011427I recently purchased a wall mounted cable machine for my home gym. My gym is in a basement with floating walls. The top anchor point is securely fastened and fine, but with a floating wall the bottom anchor point was connected to a "loose" stud and I was pulling my wall outwards.Would it work to have some kind of 3/4 piece of plywood, attach the bottom anchor point to that plywood, then fasten the plywood to a "middle" portion of the stud and neighboring studs? I would also keep the upper stud fastened of course.
>>3011634metal detector*Derp
>>3011635It would be more effective to have it bottom mounted to a piece of plywood which you were also then standing on. It won't be able to move by the same physics that says you can't lift yourself off the ground
What is the name of this light blue/purplish foam insulation? It’s installed in Europe probably late 90s. My upstairs gable wall has 40mm of it, and I’m not sure if I should replace it or leave it be
>>3011640Also theres this striped paper-like barrier on the cold side. I can choose to leave all of this in, or rip it along with the chipboard and replace it by (thicker) PIR
>>3011626Adjust them as close as you can without them actually hitting each other. Run it.
>>3011589It's more that I can't do woodworking etc. due to mess and noise, but space is an issue too.
>>3011650I'll try that, my main misunderstanding is with the "vertical clearance", horizontal I have set well since I shimmed it
>>3011686Went back and read it. Set vertical clearance at 1/64" or 15-16 thousandths if you're using feeler gauges. I think that is just so that it can't advance on the material unless it has been cut. If say it opened 1/4" wide vertical clearance you could jam that fucker into the material way faster than it could actually eat it.
I got these because they were like 98% off. I don't really have any use for themWhat's some ideas?
>>3011690Thanks for explaining it more, going to test tomorrow. My recent experience was it trying to run away from me through my own steel and I've seen people hold this shit and the steel in their hands while finely cutting it like nothing, I want to figure it out.

>>3011427how difficult is it to chop through some steel square tube (50x50x1.5mm)?I tried to call a fab shop rather than buying something to cut metal with but the guy was so profoundly retarded that it's looking more worth to just do it myself than deal with someone who spends all day inhaling fumesI've worked with an angle grinder but I think due to how accurate I need to be here I might have to get a chop saw or something thereaboutsis it completely necessary to go and buy more power tools ?I have a power saw but I read somewhere that the RPM (4500) may be sketchy with the carbide discsif whatever I read was retarded that would be good to know also
>>3011738Get a square, lay out your cut, and then cut it with your angle grinder. Follow the line. It's not rocket science.
>>3011738angle grinder, use a good cut off disc and go in at the top angle, do a VERY light pass to create a score, or if accuracy is a real concern, tap the top with a cutting chisel to get a score in but careful not to deform the metal.let the angle grinder rest on it and slowly drag it across. I'm literally 3 weeks into using an angle grinder and have cut through 3/4" plate multiple times on a single disc with good precision. Pretty easy.
I want to build a small covered deck for grilling.I don't want to use concrete since we'll probably re-do the backyard or move in a few years, so I'll likely use these Camo blocks.Ground level deck, 2x4 construction. With 4x4 posts anchored on ground spikes and fastened to the deck frame. I will probably put in balusters and rails along 3 sides for extra rigidity. Will the deck itself hold up with this design? How should I connect the 4 posts so they can hold stringers and a light PVC corrugated panel roof? I'd like to avoid putting posts in the middle of the span.I'm stuck with these dimensions but any tips for a better design are appreciated.

Been posting elsewhere on /diy/ this past two months or so, mostly over in the electric thread. Completely new to any sort of renovation. My usual process is to read about it, watch some videos on it, and ask some anons. With those three sources I have so far learned enough to get it done. Finished replacing the outlets and switches. My next step is to hang curtain rods. These seem to be the key takeaways:>4"-6" from the edge of the trim (to the sides and above)>Drill holes for drywall anchors>Drill the brackets into the anchors Tools I have that I will need:>Cordless drill >Bits>Hardware >LevelSeems fairly simple. Anything else to look out for? Are there any guidelines for the size of drill bit to use for drywall anchors? Logic suggests I ought to pick a bit one size smaller than the anchor. I realize questions this simple probably deserve their own thread for things even more basic than this one (/braindead/?). Thanks in advance for any responses.
>>3011917>size of drill bityou match this to the shaft of the fastener: the central cylinder of a screw style anchor, or the non-expanding portion of an expansion-style anchor. Softwood is pretty forgiving but hardwood can split with an oversized screw, and gypsum board will just crush away, it's better to have a clean cut to preserve the strength of the remaining material. Don't forget the threads are displacing material and it needs somewhere to go.

I got one of those bunnings wooden panels to make a desk out of. It's "pre-finished" and it's got some patches that are tacky. What's the best way to clear those bits up without trashing whatever finish there is on it that's actually cured or the wood underneath?

That'll be a first for me, so I'll doubtless be back with more "contributions" to this thread. Pic related is the first room I did. Didn't take pictures of the others since I can't remember which curtains my wife picked for each room so the rods are currently sitting empty.

I'm building a very simple table. With plywood. Should I use nails, screws or bolts? Do I need to add wood glue?
>>3012092What are the legs made of?>in B4 "plywood"If the legs are 2by4s or something then downward screws through the tabletop may be all you need (not very sturdy). If the legs are x-section made of plywood it'll be angle iron and bolts. If something else, something else. Nails are probably not what you want. Glue can't hurt.
>>3012092Screws are best, less chance for slack to start. If it ever starts wobbling, it will just get worse and worse until it falls on you.Don't just screw them into the endgrain of 2x4s. If it's not gonna be heavy duty you might can get away with screwing them into the endgrain of 4x4s

Here's a couple dumb questions. I have neglected my showerhead for a while and the hard water ended up clogging a few streams and now my baseboard near my bath tub is rotting. I am assuming the wall is also molding but I am too retard to rip it off and check it. Should I just nail the shit down or buy some new sheet rock and attempt to patch the area before installing a new baseboard?Other q probably a bunch of qs but some of my ducts are blowing a lot of dark dust/dirt and there is some buildup on my ceiling in some rooms. My spare room is worse than others but other rooms there is nothing on the textured ceiling near the duct. I barely dust my ceiling as I am once again retard. Not sure how long ago the duct work was replaced in my home as I just got it a few years ago. Should I be worried about this?
>>3012194Sorry anon, the black mold has rotted your brain

>>3012195I don't think the duct grime is mold related. The house was being rented before I bought it and it was built almost 60 years ago. I smelled cigarettes sometimes a couple years ago so I am assuming one of the previous tenants smoked and it's tar. It's only coming out of a few vents as the master bedroom, the second spare and the bathroom have nothing present.I guess the bigger question on this is, how long should duct work last in a home? And is it common for it to be done when installing a new HVAC unit? I do know the AC was installed in 2020 and my building inspector found no issues after a 2 hour inspection.

>>3011427If I'm a poorfag who cannot afford a dentist's visit and I have the beginnings of a cavity on one of my molars. What's the best way to do a DIY filling until I can afford to have it done properly? Would sterilizing it with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, then applying a drop of super glue work? I read that this is a bad idea because bacteria can (and will eventually) infiltrate under the super glue, and that the tooth will continue to deteriorate underneath, but I don't have a lot of options at the moment.I have basic hygiene bits & bobs and am currently living out of my car, so my budget is limited, but I could get some cheap supplies at a drug store.

I got this with a rat trap to remove a security screw. Is there some particular reason it's not just an L like everyone else uses?
>>3012391Surely there might be a better way instead of drilling? The aluminum is two layers thick, so once I get through the first which is easy, the drill or whatever tool I use gets stuck or performs worse the instant I reach the second layer of aluminum.

>spend a week searching for a TV stand that'd fit my requirements but it doesn't exist >decide to mount the TV and save myself the hassle (LOL) >go in with a plan, work it out like an autistic down to the most minute detail>barn wood over drywall>lag bolts that came with the TV mount weren't long enough due to the two layers instead of just one>went to the hardware store and bought some 3.5" as a replacement, figuring 1.5" to get through the wood/drywall (measured), then 2" to go into the stud (plus whatever was lost due to the thickness of the bracket, maybe 1/10")>don't know anything about home repair but recalled the old adage that studs are usually spaced either 16" or 24" apart>not in this case they ain't>stud finder can't accurately detect the studs, despite it being a highly reputable one that was recommended over and over (for this I also did extensive research)>assume it's because the wood is uneven due to it being barn siding, so the finder can't sit flush with the wall>lift up a drop ceiling tile, see studs running up (good, I assume) >measure/level down from the center of the stud and mark my first spot to drill >measure approximately one thousand times, then drill the pilot holes>whoops, no studs!>keep puzzling over it for a couple hours>eventually find the fucking studs through a highly bastardized trial and error fuckaround>they are 18" apart>by now about five fucking hours have passed since this project started>get the bracket bolted to the wall, it's tighter than a nun's snatch>put the fucking TV up on the wall and leaveI don't have a question, I'm just fucking fed up and frustrated. Fucking Christ almighty. I had plans to wire everything up but I was so sore and tired by the end of it I just drove home. >>3012314>>3012359Update: I bought a Rheem and used 2 shark bite fittings with PEX. Water heater install went smooth. I asked my plumber neighbor what he'd charge for a job like this and he said $1700. I got the water heater, drain pan, and hoses for $765. Oregon and Washington require all electric water heaters to have an EcoPort, which jacks up the price $200 compared to an equivalent Rheem sold in other states. Cucked by the government again :-(. But I didn't pull a permit (it's technically a commercial property), so I guess we're even.
>>3011427How do I "fix" small scratches on my nice wood table? It's an antique that I recently inherited. I want to get it fully refinished eventually, but for right now I just want the really obvious scratches to be less noticable. I've heard about rubbing walnuts or a mix of oil and vinegar into them will buff them out, but is that actually true? Kind of sounds like one of those fake "hacks" you see on YouTube or TikTok or whatever. I don't want to ruin the table or make it harder to refinish later. The scratches aren't deep, mostly just annoying to look at.I have no idea what it is or what it's finished with, but it's a solid wood table from the 60's or earlier. I don't want to go out and buy tinted wax just for this, if there isn't a way to make the scratches disappear from more common home supplies then I'll just throw a tablecloth on it for now. Thanks.
>>3012675Rubbing the meat of a walnut into a scratch can improve the appearance. It is not magic, it won't make it disappear, but it does make it less noticeable. I have also seen people use a similar shoe polish to the original finish for the same effect. Not that many people have shoe polish anymore. Crayons can also help, if you can find ones of a similar color.
>>3012675you just sand it down, everything else is cosmetic
>>3012593>By the end my arm felt about ready to fall off.How fucking weak are you?
>>3012726Weak enough that driving and removing lag bolts a hundred times made my shoulder sore, I guess. Like I said in the post, I don't know anything about home repair and wasn't prepared for the workout, clearly. The good news is that I went back to the house today and by God, the TV was still hanging where I left it. Got the AV equipment out of the box and did a test run.
>>3012675Can't help much with repairing the scratches other than I remember my mother using Old English polish to cover them up. If it were me I'd leave them. Scratches just add to the history, like patina on a good leather wallet. It'd be a shame to cover a nice piece of wood with a tablecloth. Got a picture of it?

Bedroom has this wall light that uses a pull chain on the fixture and it's been broken for years, getting sick of using a lamp when this should be working properly. I'm considering a project to swap from pullchain to a light which uses a switch on the wall. I seen a couple videos on YouTube and it doesn't look impossible past sourcing the tools/supplies. Should I just talk myself off the ledge and get an electrician or could a retard do this (myself)?
>>3012958It all depends on where the wire for that lamp is run. If you have to start removing drywall and running new line to get the wire over to where you want the switch you are in for a world of hurt. 'Cause now you have to know how to do drywall and have a right angle drill if you want to do it right. You could just fix the lamp. Or you could just get a lamp controlled by a wireless switch.

I am in a position to finesse a 80pc wiha set with the case and wheels new. Morality aside would I find actual use for these even if I’m not an electrician? Current job has them but for no real good reason other than they can.I don’t really wanna steal to sell I’m not a crack head. Even if it’s about 2k worth of new tools.
Is there anything like CLR but foodsafe? The ice maker started making one hell of a squealing sound so I took it apart for a more thorough cleaning. The hoses were lousy with dried mineral deposits, see pic related. I pulled one out and looked down the bore and it reminded me of one of those medical diagrams that shows an artery clogged with plaque. I bent the tube in my hand and it was like cracking a glowstick. I pulled all the hoses and got all the build up out using one of those flexible brushes you use for cleaning metal straws. We have only ever used bottled spring water to fill it but I'm switching to distilled water to see if that makes a difference. Manufacturer recommends running a cleaning cycle through it with diluted bleach whenever the cleaning light goes off, which we have been keeping up with. To the bleach's credit, there was no mold inside. >>3013250You shouldn't steal, period. You know that. Come on, guy.

>>3011427what's a good way to make a diy ventilated/cooling cushion?I was thinking of getting an air pump like an aquarium one, make some pinholes in the tube and lay it inside a regular cushion.I need it to be powered by usb too.there's some usb air pumps, but I don't know if they'll shit the bed if used outside of an aquarium... or if that the volume of air they move would feel refreshing.I was thinking of using some usb fans, but then it probably gonna be a small one, and you'd feel the case when sitting on it.
