i tried using a jigsaw to cut this archway. its not really cut perfectly to an elipse but it kinda looks good. i went to some really nice home and inspected carpentry around curves etc and its worse than this holy shit. are archways not really ever perfect ? and really who gives a shit ?

Unless you want to invest in a scroll saw, is fine. When I want to cut an arch, I just trace part of something round the draw the lines straight down.

The perfect form of an arch is called a catenary. It's not an ellipse or a parabola. It's the shape you'd get (upside down) by hanging a chain across an opening.

Saws are for rough cuts. You sand to the final edge.

sure. im building several pieces and might can take scraps and wood glue and nail gun

    i mean for dips.

i was thinking about a scroll saw blade for the jigsaw but wanted to see how this would turn out.
    >>
    >>3009746
i think it could be any depending on the geometry but in my case an ellipse (or pair of tits) worked
    >>
    >>3009755
the catenary could be done but think the workpoints would have to move up

You'd need a template and a router if you want the cutting device to slice the arch bang on the nuts. You could spin those through a router table with some sort of setup.

You make a template with a jigsaw, then sand it to make it nice, then use a router to make the arch using that template.

    Blessed post

You can put the router on an axle for circular or a combination for ellipsoid. It doesn't have to be freehanded and tuned up was the entire point.

Using Bondo wood filler and sanding actually worked out not too bad. Sealed with Kilz original oil-based primer (sanded with 80 grit on the first coat and then sanded 150 grit with the second coat) and now painting. I'm doing everything inside because I want to ensure the bondo / primer / paint cure without temperature/humidity changes.

These two will be combined, and the backside is the screw holes. This is the front

it’s fine guys doesn’t look great and fucked up a screw hole on the other side i gotta patch with bondo. but this should hold up and look nice enough but it’s far from perfect

Looks decent. You know it's not perfect, but maybe 1 in a thousand other people are ever going to notice any issues with it. I'm spoiled since I have access to a CNC table, but for future reference, a good way to do this is to mount the board you're cutting from vertically put in a couple of brads or tacks for the width, and then hang a rope from them. You can fiddle with the shape quite easily. The only issue is that it'll be upside down when you're drawing it.

If you want to make it a pointed arch more like a gothic one, you can instead put 4 brads in. Two pairs with the spacing you want, offset by a bit, and hang the same length of rope from each pair. So you have tacks 1, 2, 3, and 4, and you connect 1 to 3 and 2 to 4. Trace your arch from 2 to 3. The ropes will cross at the point in the center.

    >All 4 need to be on the same line
    >The spacing between 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 needs to be the same.
    >The length of rope used needs to be the same for each pair.
    >The distance between 2 and 3 is the gap you are trying to cover.

It's a bit of setup, but you can get very nice results without taking any measurements beyond length to length comparisons. How wide is the arch? IDK, it fits the door. How tall is the arch? IDK, it looks good. What's the angle on the point? IDK, it looks good.

if you want to repeat them, you make one template perfect even if you have to sand by hand, then use that template and a template router bit to cut your other ones once you have them slightly oversized rough-cut.

Technically, what you're describing is actually called a funicular curve, and it's only a catenary in the special case where the only load it carries is its own weight. With additional loads you could do a simulation to find the funicular by hanging weights along the length of the hanging rope. It's how people like Gaudi designed their arches.
