I have found going to people in person is always the best way to get things done, emails have less impact.

I am considering going down to a place I used to work and trying to get a friend an internship.
I am just not sure what order to do it in. Email then show up, show up then follow up email, or email and show up early before I see the reply?

It's an office full of sweet but opinionated older ladies so I have to know optics really matter to them.

calling via phone first, to give them rudimentary info what the sitrep is, what you r planning to do.
depending on how the call went and what they say, write optionally an email explaining further details, and then going in person.
they are not obliged to answer an email but a ringing phone is a nuisance. at least thats how it is in europe.
but just showing up, unsolicitedly, is unconsiderate.
thats how id do it.

Idk but I'm getting faggy vibes here, OP

just send the damn email. visit next week some time and take cookies. if you are asking someone to hire a friend in this situation you need to butter up the employer.
