I think that at its core, this site is actually about loneliness, but a lot of that loneliness does come from people being ashamed of themselves.
A lot of the archetypal 4chan posters do what they do because of shame they feel about their real lives. Trolls are ashamed of being powerless, camwhores are ashamed of being undesired and namefags are ashamed of being unpopular.
