How much should you spend on your hobbies? My hobby is gamedev and the game I'm working on now has cost me, I dunno, maybe $10k USD so far (over the course of about 2.5 years). I'll probably have spent around $50k on it by the time it's finished. My job pays very well and I don't have any kids or anything, so it definitely isn't causing any financial hardship. Just seems like it'll end up being a huge waste of money.

Probably. If you're that deep in then you should've already marketed it and gotten people to wishlist it. If you're just releasing it without any marketing then it will disappear into the abyss of indie Steam games.

Your whole life is a waste of money so I see no difference if you do or don't spend it

Not only did you not answer my question in the OP, you also make several incorrect assumptions about my gamedev process. Incredible.

please tell me that image is not from your game and you haven't spent 50k on that because I'm gonna bully you.

I'm doing the design, code, and writing. Someone else is doing the artwork, and that's where practically 100% of the budget is going. I'm using royalty free music.

There is no should, there's only how much you can afford and still be comfortable.

10K over 30 months, or 2.5 years works out to 333 dollars a month, or just shut of 11 dollars per day. There's definitely worse hobbies. My father is a big game hunter and regularly entertains 1000 dollar scopes and was looking at a Sig Sauer binocular for 5000 dollars. That's just to get you in the field. Private hunts which are actually not shitty public land and mean you'll take something home, cost thousands of dollars plus lodging fees.

So I'd say you're fine.

5-10 probably. but i want to start on another one as soon as this one is finished. in an ideal world, i will literally just be devving until i die.
