Trying to play hooky by keeping both the main plotline (and the MC motivation) and the rules of the power system a mystery they're stripping the series of a serious hook, especially because the author isnt managing the mystery well: the best way to keep interest in an overarching mystery is to add stakes and throw in ambiguous but substantial crumbles of knowledge, both of which Graykeith spectacularly fails at.Throwing in a name of a forbidden book the MC wants to find because there's no sense of power scaling as there's no anchoring as of now, there are no stakes to it because there is no imminent external threat and Graykeith's motivation is kept secret and the magic, while pretty looking, doesn't spark enough wonder because it looks both arbitrary (MC can just asspull anything he needs) and absolutely busted (MC seems overpowered). This latter issue could be easily fixed by pushing more on the mentor-stundent angle except they spend most of the first volume with Graykeith refusing to teach Kisaragi and only in the latest chapters she learns a bit of it and it isnt given much attention and it leads nowhere.That's really weird because a mentor-student angle is a slamdunk story hook by making the student journey to learn and grow stronger a very compelling and relatable storyline.Shame because a lot of the fantasy designs look great, I almost would rate it above Ichi, which is the other premiere fantasy series in the magazine (of course, barring Graykeith himself and his assitant who have quite the awfully generic design). Kisaragi, the bat monsters, the reaper lady, the librarian with the cut off face and the latest villain with the nosferatu ass design all look great. Even minor magic things like the little fairies have good designs.

You want to know how you fix Jump? Plan issues and chapters further in advance. Magazine and Sunday obviously plan further in advance when volumes are announced much earlier. Is it an coincidence that the other two magazines still have series frequently going over 300 chapters while Jump series rarely reach that milestone anymore? Its because MOST of the authors aren't dying to draw chapters and you can see that by the art actually looking finished. Its no wonder polls say newbies are looking at Magazine and Sunday over Jump, nobody wants to put up with the Jump grind anymore. It would mean that axebaits would have to live longer and less batches, but it could at least bring in more talent.
