>"You guys do karate?.. You're both losers"I don't get it. Why is karate for losers?
>>271515Because you wear old Japanese bathrobe and practice semi contact larping and then 120kg chad football player just bounces you off the fucking wall with a shoulder tackle Whereas mma, bjj and boxing/mt nerds actually have a chance against big billy when he tries to smash your face in
Depends how big Billy is.If a black rapist breaks into Your house, will karate protect Your wife, and Your daughter, and Your newborn son?
>>272080well, it might protect one of those things.
>>272080>>272917Yeah, I know karate won't stop armed robbery. But you could say that about EVERY martial art out there
>>272080>If a black rapist breaks into Your house, will karate protectNo, only if a white rapist breaks into my house.
I was born in the 80s, lived through the 90s and 2000s, and saw plenty of exactly that type of behaviour; especially among young people. You've got to remember a few things that do actually make that clip accurate:Between the 70s and 90s, an awful lot of people were ignorant and stupid. Although the type of ignorance and stupidity isn't quite the same variety as what you get today, much like today, the people who espoused the ignorance and stupidity made it a point of pride. Debating, or even discussing the matter with them would be pointless, because you can't use a reasonable argument on an unreasonable person. Teens were not only no exception to this behaviour, they would take it even further, because young people tend to be particularly stupid and ignorant a lot of the time.In the old days, doing pretty much any Eastern martial art was generally viewed as loser behaviour by a lot of people, particularly purists of Western martial arts, and especially by teens. Even though Eastern arts like karate did see a surge in popularity during the 70s and 80s, they were still never really mainstream in the way that things like boxing were. You basically did shit like boxing, wrestling, etc, or you were a loser; even kickboxing was frowned upon a lot of the time. And this is coming from someone who has tried both boxing and karate and liked boxing a lot more. But there was no nuance from the people who had the attitudes like the one expressed in that clip. They didn't form their opinions through genuine examination and scrutiny, they did it through ignorance.
>>271515Because boxing mma jujitsu wrestling and judo are more effective and easier to learn
>>272919Nah
>>272968Things that will never happen
>>272984True and also true is the fact that boxing and wrestling are the easiest and most effective martial arts you can learn on top of being in the top three most effective martial arts ever
>>273239Yeah, but then on the other side of that coin, you get the traditional martial artists who look down their nose at boxing and wrestling. Which is weird, because many of them have even done those sorts of arts further back in their past, but they treat their indoctrination into overly complicated and mystical traditional arts as some kind of awakening. For example, I know an old man who did boxing and judo when he was a kid in the early 70s, but then switched to traditional in the late 70s and early 80s. They indoctrinated him so hard that even though he hasn't practiced in any meaningful way in over four decades, he still genuinely believes he's a deadly weapon and nothing else really measures up to what he's done. He's made it such a core part of his persona that he's less confident and more just impervious to criticism or any challenging ideas. Seeing someone pour that much of their life down a thing like that would be sad to watch if it wasn't so funny and annoying.
