8-8.25 was probably the most common size around 2010. before that, 8 was considered big. I vividly remember when all the kids at the skatepark were switching over to 8 because lots of pros were. I stayed on 7.75 because I'm not a bandwagon hopper. I'm on 8 now in 2026. most people don't realize that one of the main reasons to go wider is shoe size. riding a 8 with size 12 shoes for example would feel like you're on a 2x4. with my size 9.5, 8 still feels fine to me. a wider board might be great for big ollies and such because of more griptape area, but I feel like if I tried a wider board it's hard to go back. you learn to properly utilize the grip area you have efficiently with a narrower board. I also love my 8 for transition, I dunno why everyone went to wide as boards for transition like you need it. I much prefer having narrower trucks for locking in.

I remember when I was a small kid in the early 2000s, I struggled with treflips. then I met a friend who skated a mini(element twig) and I could tre flip easily on it. that made me realize that kids SHOULD be skating minis and mids(are mids even a thing these days) until they are big enough to skate a full sized board. nobody ever seemed to do that except in the early 2000s. I knew 5 year olds who were skating 8"+ boards when they weighed like 40lbs. it's no wonder it took them so many years to be able to do a proper flip tricks.

I'm a size size 9.5 too, riding 8.25, I'm getting used to it but I don't like it.
I stood on an 8 and 7.5, I'm definitely not getting an 8, but maybe not 7.75 either, the 7.5 seemed like it could be fun.
    >>271367
Had a similar story, my friend had the big board he couldn't do shit on, I was on a stick doing the rare tre flip.
    >that made me realize that kids SHOULD be skating minis and mids
Agreed, kids don't even need 7 plies.
    >>
    >>271371
I couldn't go back to a 7.5, maybe a 7.75 at smallest. the 8 flips perfectly for me. not too fast, not too slow. 8 is like the standard small size now it seems. I think the shorter wheelbase and overall length is what helped make tre flips on a mini so easy, not necessarily the width.

it's actually a pretty sick piece. it's supposed to simulate plenty of spots you would find irl donwtown areas. angled planters for example. lots of bump to manny tricks. wallride tricks. you will find lots of steep but short banks like that irl. they are much harder to skate for a beginer than a big bank because you have very little time to pop after you ride up it. it taches good board control and can accomodate very technical skating.

Went to the skatepark in Ulm with the new getup, geez I hadn't had a pair of trucks in a few years, plus the new bushings and wheels made for a very responsive skateboard with little wiggle, I was struggling to land ollies and remain straight. if skating alone doesn't give you that cathartic response then you don't/no longer like skateboarding. substance abusers should be banned from the skateparks because they are a negative influence on the pure mind of small children. even the small children without parental supervision who give the middle finger and yell the hard r.

One time I saw a guy at my local skatepark skating with his hood up, and I thought that was rather curious. I eventually noticed he had some crazy tattoos on his head and looks 40 despite maybe being 17. He also had like some "handlers" there that were telling him what to do. They were very belligerant. It was weird. Pic not the place.

I get that people like Lance Mountain and Mark Gonzales made a lot of contributions to the sport over the years, but even Jordan knew when to hang up the jersey. At this point all these guys are doing is clogging up team rosters and siphoning money and advertising away from younger guys. Arto's last part came out in 2009 and Flip is still selling his boards while one of their ams is almost 30.

vert is fun as fuck but it's hard to make it look good on video.

the problem with skateboarding is that people support corporate brands. sure, supporting corporate brands helps skateboarding be more mainstreas... but the result is that core brands suffer financially and thus the actual hardcore community that has been going for decades withers away. who cares if trend riding faggots skateboard for 1 year because nike has some cool looking colorway. also, let's not forget that it was corporate brands that forced all the DEI pros onto the industry, making a mockery of skateboarding on the international stage.

Ginwoo has to be some kind of autistic savant right? People assume that he's raising the bar in skateboarding, and that like others before him, everyone in the future will rise to his standard... but I feel like this is more than one of those instances. I don't think most will be able to do that. It will only be a very select few. It's not like he's a hucker, or a technical ledge skater. He's better than the majority of ledge skaters... on handrails. and he's a late bloomer it seems so he's not even close to being at his physical peak. A lot of these new era Japanese skaters seem to know something everyone else doesn't, but not like this. He's not even having to battle for most of the shit he does in comps. He just does it.

    >>271893
could he ever skate? I don't even remember him doing much in zooyork videos. he was kind of just there for comedic relief. I always thought he had down syndrome or was a crackhead or something. at a lot of the demos I went to back then, many of the pros skated no better than the local shop guys(at least at the demo anyways) and rarely were there standouts. Nick Dompierre was a beast though at the Adio demo. he was doing huge gap to grinds on our pyramids.

because there was no dedicated 'junior' league for skating like there is for more normal sports. skateboarding is one of the very few sports where 12 year olds are allowed to directly compete with 30 year olds in the same competitions. so, a skateboard was simply a skateboard because a skater was simply a skater. you rode what you could get your hands on, and that was that. Little League mindset didn't come along until the 2000s when you started getting skate camps and shit for little kids.

    >Deck
Doesn’t matter what brand, only buy boards made by BBS or PS Stix woodshops. I must have been through hundreds of decks by this point and they’re the only ones worth buying.

    >trucks
I’m still an Indy man at heart, the stage IVs they reissued recently are crazy good and arguably better than aces imo.

    >wheels
Was a formula 4 rider until I tried the peralta dragons, now I don’t think I can go back. Best thing you can do for your joint health while still getting a decent slide and you can skate on practically any surface

    >bearings
Reds or Swiss if they’re on sale. Swiss are not that much faster but they will last years even if you skate everyday

realising I didn't need to ride 99As just because they're the "standard" was the single biggest revelation for me. I went down to 95s, sometimes even 93s. everybody thought I was mad for it but now you got Spitfire and Bones/Peralta all making their special formulae in those Duros and people are raving about how they're the best wheels ever for anyone who isn't riding in curated parks. People are finally unlearning the bad habits of the 90s and realising why you couldn't even get wheels above about 97A in the 80s.
    >>
    >>272039
    >people are raving about how they're the best wheels ever for anyone who isn't riding in curated parks
Crazy thing is they still keep their speed on smooth park concrete too. I skate both park and street and I have no trouble with either. They’re stickier than 99As at first but my god if they dont age like fine wine, after a few weeks I can hit a bs tailslide on transition like it’s nothing.

I was initially suspicious of the hype but they really are that good

I get that. When you first slide them they’re basically silent, they sound like cruiser wheels until you break them in, and even then they don’t have quite the same bark that F4s have. I’m used to it now anyways

    >if it requires athleticism it's a sport

No, the definition would be if it's a competitive activity.

And surfing can exist without competition.

Just like there is figure skating and roller disco.

Tony founded Birdhouse and still runs the company. Competition or not, he still skates.
Arto works as photographer and TM for Flip. I haven't seen a board with his graphics personally.
Dressen only provides california legitimacy, and does a poor attempt at a frontside slash every 3 years. Dressen has a pair of trucks in his name.

    >peralta dragons
There are a millions types of dragons, even rat dragons. Please be more specific.

I didn't feel like learning about all these variants and just wend with FF classic wheels

I would like to treat knees well. Its crazy how much softer 90D feels. But I don't trust them at the skatepark. They grip too much and I'm afriad of slamming with them. So I reserve those for streets.
    >>
    >>272084
I ride the 93s, which are the original dragon formula. A little sticky at first on smooth concrete but once broken in they slide like a 99 and they get more slick the more you use them. Even better on asphalt too.

I tried the 97s but they felt kinda pointless, they’re considerably worse on rough terrain, the impact absorption isn’t as good and you only feel a slight benefit at the park.
    >>
    >>272085
    there are multiple 93 variants
    >>
I like the bones skatepark formula, for the skatepark
    >>
    >>272086
Just go with whichever shape and size is closest to what you’d normally ride. If it’s the FF classics then just stick with the V1s

It's upsetting to see how shit things are now when I know how much better they were before.
I used to have an indoor park that was free for me and a bunch of other indoor/covered places to skate, and now there's nothing. Everything has been skatestopped, all the ground is shit unless you're on cruiser wheels, and all the indoor spots have either closed or been torn down. The nearest indoor is an hour away and costs $30 to get in.

That was my one critique but I couldn't post on the move. I really enjoy a rap but these tracks are basically fighting the visuals the entire time. The first beat is low-energy. It gives the impression you're watching a sponsor-me tape for Nike and every possible metric is accounted for. The closing song was too clean, loud and confrontational (in all the wrong ways). I want to focus on the skating, bolstered by sounds and lyrics that play along not against.

Still gotta make a manramp-style coffin-shaped board with handles for "best trick at the coffin".
Still gotta finish drilling and mounting truck baseplates to an old bulgarian steel helmet as a trophy to win at "Skatefight".
Still waiting on the custom shirts and hoodies for the crew to be done screenprinted.
Still waiting on the prototype of the lil zine ive made containing pictures and drawings of the diy.

They have as much right to be at the skatepark as you.

The problem is negligent parents. I’ve had experiences where kids have zero regard for etiquette and don’t look where they’re going, and then when a collision inevitably happens the parent will get mad at the skaters. It’s your fucking kid, it’s your responsibility to teach them how to be safe there. Instead you’re sat staring at your phone while your kid is causing absolute havoc.

I decided to target the specific area with stretches before skating, and now it's nearly entirely gone when I skate. if you're hurting or stiff just a few minutes into skating, or even after just light sessions, you really can't progress because you won't be able to skate much. I always thought stretching was partially a meme. obviously it does help, but I didn't expect it to nearly entirely alleviate the specific pains I was having.

Happy for you but this brings a thought ive had to mind. Many people rave about how bad abd lame weed and alcohol in skate culture is but the most retarded thing about skate culture is that no one stretches
    >>
    >>272609
it's because most skaters are young and have been skating for years so they are naturally fairly flexible. therefore they don't notice a benefit from stretching like the average person would.

    Month 7 of skating

I landed my first pop shuvits today. Two tips.

    >start jumping then scoop
    >you need wake up and jump for this. Its not like lazy, sleepy shuvit. Jump, and commit

First time skating indoors on this black plastic. After a minute your wheels get coated in plastic flakes and its very slippery, moreso than wet concrete.

I ignored how much of it was being inhaled into my lungs.
    >>
    >>272613
Oh, a third tip. Think of passing the back of the board to your front foot.
    >>
    >>272613
now do a heelflip. they're very easy.
    >>
    >>272615
I was considering frontside shuvits next. Got the frontside 180 today.

    What's your tech tree like?

    >ollie -> pop shuvits -> heelflip -> kickflip
    >>
    >>272614
very true. the way i talk about it is the front foot exists on the board to provide pressure to the pop until it is released, afterwards it will move to seek and catch the board
    >>
    >>272601
there's a hill a few yards away that I think goes lower than the bottom of the pool. I should be able to just do the hose siphon trick and leave it to it for a day or two.
    >>
    >>272617
back in the day we used to learn heelflips before kickflips because they really are easier. I'd argue that even things like fakie bigspins are easier than kickflips. this is why a lot of experienced skaters have treflips on lock better than their kickflips. kickflips, while not difficult, have much more room for variations of getting done sloppy or inconsistently because it's 90% in your front foot, specifically the toe. the flick angle, timing, everything has to be very consistent or it will look slightly different every time you do it. new shoes can throw you off pretty easily even. heelflips on the other hand, have a much more easily repeatable mechanic, and a lot of what keeps the board perfectly under you is actually where you place your back foor when you pop. not to mention, it's almost always more naturally to get a good igh pop on a heelflip, but if you want a good high kickflip you really have to hone it over time. my switch/nollie kickflips are literally 10x nicer than my regular ones, mostly from neglecting keeping them sharp over the years.
    >>
    >>272617
    >>272626
My go to warm-up line is what I call the "1990": pop shuv-it, backside 180, fakie big spin. I call it that because it was in everyone's part, in every video in 1990.

And what the anon said about heelflips is true.
    >>
    >>272626
    >back in the day we used to learn heelflips before kickflips because they really are easier
And here I thought it was just me. What’s really weird is that I’ve been skating for 20 years and can land a kickflip every try, but even though I learned heelflips first, they’re way more inconsistent. I can even land tre flips and hardflips more regularly than I do heelflips. They just feel really heavy and sluggish to me now
    >>
When I started heelflips were for black guys and kickflips for whites. So naturally I learnt kickflips first.
    >>
any grind that has you face forward (back crook, front tailslide, etc) isn't a real grind
    >>
    >>272634
    > feel heavy and sluggish
that's probably just because you have more shoe on the board. the benefit to that though is more consistency once you start doing them daily. I didn't do many for years and kind of lost them once, but then I decided to get them back and spent a couple days doing them. now they're a warmup trick. it feels like you literally just jump straight up in the air over your board and it stays perfectly under you.
    >>272636
lol I remember a period during the early 2000s where black pros would do lots of heelflips. that's probably just because you can do heelflips with much more pop than a kickflip naturally. like I said, in order to get a really popped kickflip that also looks consistently clean, you have to be pretty good at skating. your average kickflip just looks like a quick flipped throwaway for most people. 99% of people will never have an Aimu style kickflip. that shit is much harder than it looks.
    >>
I've also noticed that I can heelflip right away in new shoes. kickflips on the other hand are often a bitch if shoes aren't broken in or are just stiff by design in general.
    >>
    >>272636
Why do black people heelflip though?
    >>
    >>272636
Yea the one black kid in our skate group as friends was a heel flip guy at first. Once he learned kickflips though he'd just kickflip gaps instead.
Yea Heelflip seems objectively easier though because there is less bending/twitching of the front knee. You can just bring ur front knee right up like an ollie. Since on a kickflip ur flicking towards the inside inner side of ur knee it gives it a more complex motion and more room for stylization since the extra knee movement.
    >>

it doesn't matter dude, your excuse is its your first day. Its only say if, after a year, you can barely stand on your board

    >>
    >>272716
2am sessions. also just get in the habit of riding your board everywhere. make a morning routine where you got skate to get a coffee of something like that
    >>
    >>272716
you can either stop caring what you look like or you'll just have to find somewhere secluded to skate. it's good to get familiar with flatground first though. going to the skatepark and riding down a bank can end in disaster if you're a noob. as for the trucks... it's one of the most neglected things in skateboarding from an engineering perspective. even half of the pros just crank their nut down to "make them tighter." you're really not supposed to do that though. at least not past a couple of threads showing at most. the proper way is to instead buy replacement bushings that are the desired hardness, that way you can run your nut at the top like it's supposed to be. a cranked down squashed bushing will split in no time, and it changes the geometry anyways. most trucks come with bushings designed for 100lbs kids. with that said,, while learning with loose trucks will take longer, it will also strengthen your ankles and make your balance/control better in the long run. If you do buy harder bushings, don't go full retard and get the hardest ones you can. it will make it a bit easier at first, but it will be a crutch in the long run and you will have to "unlearn it." a good medium tightness is the way to go. if your board can't at least make a 90 degree arc in a 10ft span it's probably way too stiff. as for what bushings to buy, I know tensor has a unique design for either the top or bottom, but maybe another brand can be used for the non-unique one. essentially running a mix match setup or the stock 90d and a harder bones or something on the bottom. you may have to remove the bottom metal washer though to match the height of the stock bushing. I haven't personally owned a set of tensors.

I bought my first board yesterday and today I twisted my ankle by trying to learn an ollie. I heard a huge cracking noise kek. How to avoid this in the future besides gitgud ? It's not really a not knowing how to fall situation I guess, I landed on the board side even tho I managed to avoid it during the first hour of trying but then I got angry for not succeeding and instead of stopping there I fucked myself. Anyway do you guys think skating with ankle braces is the way ? Or bandages ?

    >>
    >>272993
    >ankle braces
This will only make your ankles weaker. Some people suggest hi top shoes but the evidence shows it doesn’t make much difference and in fact makes knee injuries more likely by transferring the force of the impact up your leg. Your best bet is to let it heal completely before skating again, and then do regular ankle strengthening exercises so it can handle the stress. I highly recommend getting a bunch of therapy bands with different resistance levels and gradually work your way up.
    >>
    >>272993
    > got a board
    > tried to ollie on day one
this was your mistake. you need to actually learn to ride it, balance on it, and step off of it first. lucky for you, it doesn't even look that bad considering it's not blown up with swelling. stay off of it for a couple of weeks.
    >>273006
mid-hi tops 100% help with rolling ankles, as fo wide/fatter shoes. but only if said shoes have a stiffer collar. and also only if you lace them up to the second to last hole. flimsy ones like blazers are just for looks when it comes to actual ankle support. narrow shoes, especially those with a flimsy ankle collar will roll over very easily, even if not at a steep ankle. I've learned this multiple times over decades of skating. I'm liking the new balance 417, they take a while to break in though. they are a slightly less puffy and more rigid vans half cab. you don't want to be completely restricted with a brace or anything, you need ankle mobility to skate and balance properly... but you want support to "catch" you once it bends to a certain degree. think of how you would lace rollerblades as an example. only way I skate low tops is if they are og style fat skate shoes from the early 2000s. the wide footprint helps a lot. most of those are cupsoles though, so board feel is pretty subpar compared to modern vulc shoes. especially when trying to learn.
    >>
    >>272993
    > Peroneal bruising typically indicates an acute peroneal tendon tear or peroneal muscle strain, where internal bleeding from damaged tissue manifests as discoloration around the outer ankle and foot. While peroneal tendonitis (inflammation) primarily causes pain and swelling, visible bruising is a key sign of more significant structural damage, such as a Grade 2 or 3 tear, or a traumatic muscle injury.
The loud "pop" you claim doesn't sound good. Other than that it's a pretty common injury that heals on it's own. If it feels unstable however, considering the pop you may have actually yeeted it.

Other peeps prolly said it but you should not be trying to ollie on your first day.
Learn to ride a skateboard first. Riding on footpaths. Stopping. Pushing, jumping off, doing manuals, rolling down small banks, avoiding stones and sticks. Doing tic tacs.

Once you start to feel comfortable on your board then you can bring ollies into your skating.

Just my philosophy but the point of a skateboarding is to ride it around.
    >>
I ollied before "learning to ride", what does that mean anyway? I don't even remember learning to ride. Certainly has nothing to do with his injury unless he was trying to ollie in motion which is going full retard, in which case you'd tell him not to do ollies in motion until he has them perfect stationary.
    >>272993
Were you going full retard or was it a stationary ollie freak accident?
    >>
    >>273045
It's easier to do ollie's while moving, if anything you should learn them while rolling rather then stationary.

Just my opinion of course but you need to get comfortable on your board which means riding it a lot. If you want to get good at skateboarding you can't be getting injured over and over.

Jumping straight into the deep end is foolish, you shouldn't be hurting your ankle on something like an ollie.

Anyway everyone has a different philosophy on how to go about it.

yes it's perfectly normal to get injured. that's part of skateboarding. however you made it seem like you just decided to skateboard one day and went straight to trying to ollie. especially considering you are not a young child, the possibility of injury is vastly higher. you have to ease into it. you're not a 10-year-old that weighs 60 lbs and has elastic ligaments. if you want any kind of longevity and fun instead of just being sidelined in pain all the time, you have to ease into it. learning to fall and land with your feet planted is the hardest part in learning to skate. it takes many many consistent hours to build up those reflexes.

when it comes to skating quarter pipes, you don't really want to fall whilst leaning too far back or too far forward. too far forward and you fall to flat if it's relatively high. too far back and you can slam hard and/or hit your head. you kind of have to pick a side though, so a little on the leaning back side is usually preferable. you just need to anticipate the board shooting out from under you so you don't fall back with too much oomph, and always be careful of letting your neck/head whip back. you usually limit the intensity of the fall by bending the knees more than you normally would, staying very low.the more upright and stiff you are standing, the harder you're gonna slam on a shootout. rock to fakies are extremely easy, and mostly mental. although lots of people do them wrong when learning. don't do that shit where you go all the way up on the top to your back truck like an oldschool pool skate. also don't do that noob thing where you just hang your front truck barely over the coping then drag it back over whilst essentially clipping it. it's entirely a "rhythm" type of trick. think of it like a manual boardslide manual. it's all one fluid motion. front trucks lifts, center of the board makes contact whilst the back truck lifts, then you put the back truck back down and lift the front truck entirely over the coping without touching it. most people fall because they do the hang up style shit. do you not have small quarter pipes to learn on? I would always learn everything on like a 3ft quarter pipe, then take it to the 5ft tall bowl, then to the big bowl. a lot of stall tricks can be done blind once you learn them. it's all about the sound and timing of the coping and the pump. popping off your front wheels, especially when fakie is the best feeling thing about skating transition to me.
    >>
I miss all the old indoor skatelite parks where it felt like you were skating on ice. I could backside powerslide for like 20ft, revert tricks on transition were cake, and if you fell you just slid it out.which took away a lot of the impact. I think that's why so many people rode tight trucks back then too, if you had loose trucks and tried to carve a big turn on 99 wheels you would just wash out. it was all about the powerslides back then. it was fun
    >>
    >>273049
I feel like the board is more stable when in motion.
So if you're ollie'ing even a little bit of forward momentum gives you much more stability with your pop and landing.

Ollie'ing on stationary is fine too but it requires a bit more balance and finesse as the energy from the jump is being totally absorbed in a neutral position rather then one that is moving forward.

Momentum and speed makes skateboarding easier in a paradoxical sort of way.

    >>
    >>273029
    > I feel like even if I had a roïded ankle landing like that would still pop it.
Ankle strengthening wont protect you from injury 100%, nothing will. It will however make your ankles more resilient and flexible under stress. I’m speaking from experience here, I broke my ankle 4 years ago and I’ve been doing ankle exercises ever since with only the occasional minor tweak here and there. It took a pretty bad break to turn me onto a proper stretching and training regimen to support my skating, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

    >>273012
As I said, the evidence isn’t there to support your claims. The studies I’ve read are specifically focused on basketball rather than skating, but the results demonstrated no significant difference between hi and low top shoes. If you want to stop your board biting you in the ankle, then go for it. Me personally, I will choose full range of movement over protection everytime.

    >only way I skate low tops is if they are og style fat skate shoes from the early 2000s
I broke my ankle in the es Quattros, and they are nothing if not bulky. The big fat shoes might actually make things worse because there’s more resistance from the material preventing full range of movement, which puts more stress on joints and bones.
    >>
    >>273075
Chances are you’re hanging up because you’re too heavy on the front foot, a lot of beginners make the mistake of essentially standing with their weight on the top of the ramp when really your weight should stay inside the ramp. If you’re light enough on the front foot the wheels should just bump gently over the coping rather than getting stuck. Doesn’t hurt to pull your front knee up too to help lift the wheels over
    >>
    >>273152
I don't care about "studies" of some retarded armchair experts. Especially regarding basketball where the average "athlete" is just some genetic freak with % bodyfat and an injury prone skeleton. I've been skating since 2001 and god knows how many different types of shoes I've owned. All of my worst ankle rolls have been in slim, flimsy shoes. there is a reason they put you in a restrictive boot when they want your ankle to heal properly. it's a matter of anatomy. not an opinion.
    >>
ice skates are high tops because they are designed to literally keep the ankle upright instead of falling over. properly laced high tops are a well'studied design feature and they do their job.
    >>
    >>273156
    > there is a reason they put you in a restrictive boot when they want your ankle to heal properly
Yeah, it’s to limit movement while your foot is healing. There’s also a reason why they remove it once your foot is healed.

    >All of my worst ankle rolls have been in slim, flimsy shoes
That says more about your ankle strength than it does the shoes. If you need bulky shoes to stop them from rolling, it means your ankles don’t have the flexibility and strength to handle extreme stress without excessive protection. The same goes for using ankle braces. It’s a crutch that makes things worse in the long run, not the solution.
    >>
    >>273158
nobody said that you "use" high tops because your ankle isn't "strong." you can have the strongest ankle in the world and still roll it whilst skateboarding. unless you only do slappys on curbs or some shit. that's like saying helmets don't save your head unless you have a weak neck.
    >>
    >>273159
    >nobody said that you "use" high tops because your ankle isn't "strong."
Actually “they” did - I said that. Anything that minimises the stress put on your ankles is literally making them weaker. If you don’t use it, you lose it. I skate CTAS pro lows, haven’t had a bad ankle injury since 2022 and I do ankle exercises every morning. Go figure.
    >>
    >>273160
I'm pretty sure that the point is
    > if/when you do roll your ankle, tightly laced supportive high tope will limit the amount of damage you could incur compared to a low top.
    >>
blazers are a perfect example of a shoe making it easier to roll your ankle. they are so flimsy that your entire foot can shift off of the sole if you land with enough lateral force. it's crazy how they have remained one of the most popular shoes since like 2010 despite everyone I know getting injured in them. all for the sake of "board feel." bailing on transition in those is a coin flip if your foot lands sideways on an incline..
    >>
    >>273162
My friend broke his ankle in hi top blazers, and while he can still skate he can’t kickflip anymore. Sad times.

    >>273161
It might help, but not as much as actually strengthening the ankle itself. After I had my ankle break I saw a great physiotherapist who specialises in extreme sports. He was very insistent that hi tops a cope and not a valid substitute for improving strength and flexibility. Don’t be a bad workman blaming your tools, just take care of your body and it’ll take care of you.
    >>
How the hell do you guys manage to "keep" the tricks you learn between sessions

I try to go once or twice a week at least, but it feels like every new session I keep having to relearn the same shit. I can waste like a half hour just getting an axle stall right, doing a shuv it up a ramp or ollying up a euro gap despite all those tricks being shit I've done so many times before
    >>
    >>273164
are you claiming that a strong ankle + supportive shoes is not safer than a strong ankle + unsupportive shoes? it sounds like it.
    >>273165
if you're only skating once or twice a week, that's why. your "warm up" will take way longer, and it's hard to progress only skating that much. I only skated on the weekend, friday afternoon and all day saturday for like 3 years. I barely improved. basically just maintained. when I skated everyday, or at least every other day, I was improving. even just fucking around on flatground for 30 minutes a day is better than doing nothing while you wait for the skatepark day you have planned.
    >>
    >>273165
To really learn something you have to do it everyday. It's the only way to make a lot of progress
    >>
    >>273166
Supportive shoes =/= hi tops. Anything which “supports” your foot by limiting its range of motion is making it weaker because you’re not subjecting it to minor stresses and contortions that in the long run would strengthen it. I’m more opposed to ankle braces than hi tops for that reason, but the principle remains the same. You’re so afraid of ankle rolling that you’re actively making it more likely by relying on copes like hi tops to protect yourself. This is coming from what my physio told me and the research I’ve personally done on the subject. If you think your personal experience with low tops is more valid then whatever, but don’t fall into the trap of survivorship bias.

I got shit genetics or coordination or something. I skated for awhile without rolling my ankles. Till I rolled one of them when I was 16... Never been the same since. Made me do kickflips in a weird way since then that I haven't broke the habbit of. But yea I rolled my ankles a billion times (both) since then. Whenever I start progressing and getting good id just roll one of my ankles again. Fucked me over in skating hard. I'm an ok skater (can tre flip, nollie heel, backside blunt) etc. Shit always just happens way too often to me idk maybe bad coordination ive always sucked at catching things.. But yea it's always like landing on the nose weird or tail weird like off the side of the nose or tail and it rolling.
    >>
    >>273171
this is called building muscle memory. the more consistently you do it, the more natural it will come when you go to do it again. it's why I can do tricks again after a 15 year hiatus from skateboarding. I used to do all the tricks I learned until I could do three in a row without fail. and I would go through the rotation most days as my warmup.
    >>
    >>273174
that's why they teach you to aim for the bolts. rolling ankles is a part of skating. anyone who claims they don't do it on a regular basis probably doesn't skate very hard. luckily, most times it's not bad. just a few days off of it and you're good. but if you're heavier, or older it's obviously worse. are you by any chance heavy footed? I kind of am normally. but I learned to land lightly when skating. try overexaggerating the squat when you land stuff, takes a bunch of forces off of your ankles and shit. as for your flick, maybe you have a lasting injury, or it never healed 100% right. or maybe it's just a mental thing. I'm not a "genetically" gifted athlete either. I'm actually pretty stiff if I don't stretch good as a warmup. have you tried different setup combinations? not that it's a good thing to get into board madness, but certain tweaks can help people if they have specific common issues. for example, I grew up skating low trucks, then once I got my adult body, I would notice that I frequently got "ghost flick" or my front foot would shoot off the front of the board because I was trying to put too much power into my ollies. I could never figure it out. so I always had to ollie at like 75% when I did gaps or anything. years later, I got some high trucks, and a relatively steep kick deck. it seems to have fixed it. it just works better with my timing and intensity when I pop. basically, the nose is much more vertical at the point the tail pops off the ground, so my front foot can't "ouutpace" the nose and getover or in front of it, and instead my foot hits the nose like it's supposed to. I can't tell you how many times I ate shit on stairs or gaps and had no clue why just because I was trying to ollie with too much force on a setup that in hindsight was more suited for a quick controlled anap. it's basically the opposite of when people often get ghost pop from a steep kick. I ended up liking that now.
    >>
    I don't skate hard.
I skate like a pussy because I don't want to get hurt.
    >>
    >>273177
skating is about having fun, not being good. but progressing is part of the fun. you have to balance risk management and progress.
    >>
    >>273164
What ankle strengthening exercises do you recommend? If you exercise it too much can you overwork them and make them weak too? How do you know you are not overdoing them
    >>273175
yea seems like the best thing to do is aim for skating for an hour and a half everyday and that's it. I mean an hour and half of pure skating (not sitting around drinking beers at the park for 4 hours) That's what nyjah does at his home park or whateva.
    >>273176
What do you mean by heavy footed? like flat footed? I am a bit but not totally flat. More like small arch. I'm not talking about small little rolls yea those happen all the time and you just skate in two days.. I'm talking about lots of full on rolls where you have to take 4 weeks off and flipping your board hurts still for another 6 weeks or so after that lol.
    >as for your flick, maybe you have a lasting injury,
ohhh its a complete mental thing. My ankles good atm and it wouldn't hurt at all to flip the board... It's a habbit I've had since I was like 16 when I first ever had a bad full ankle roll.... I would keep trying to skate again and roll it again etc and want to be able to kickflip again fast and developed this weird way of doing them where i mostly use my leg to kick hard instead of just a small ankle flick. It's just a drilled in bad habbit hard to fix at this point.... I get compliments on them allll the time but i think its weird and just makes it harder to do..
Yea I never fucked with setup shit. Just stick to standard indies and jeremy klein boards..... og basic spitfire shape etc..
    >>
    >>273179
    >What ankle strengthening exercises do you recommend?
Calf raises and stuff with resistance bands, mainly. Doesn’t have to be anything too fancy or intense, you shouldn’t be strapping weights to your feet or anything. The important thing is to do it regularly.
    >>
    >>273180
Have you ever hit yourself in the face with a resistance band?
    >>
    >>273179
by heavy footed I mean like actually walking loudly when barefoot. more on the heel than the front of the foot. I've always done that. I'm actually surprised that skateboarding never fixed it. the other guy talking about "strengthening your ankle" is kind of overstating what can actually be done. you can only become flexible/athletic to a certain degree, but even at that point, if you roll your ankle bad you're still at the mercy of physics. there is no way around that. skateboarding is outside of the realm of what normal people, even athletes do with their body. landing with half of your foot on the nose or tail hard enough is going to suck no matter how physically fit you are. if anything, balance and reflexes are more important than outright ankle mobility.flexibility more helps with not getting pains from actual sessions than anything else.
    >>
    >>273181
lol no. It’s a small risk but the rubber is fairly grippy. If you’re really worried just don’t pull it too taut and stretch it away from your face

    >the other guy talking about "strengthening your ankle" is kind of overstating what can actually be done. you can only become flexible/athletic to a certain degree, but even at that point, if you roll your ankle bad you're still at the mercy of physics
I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to prevent ankle rolls, they’re literally the most common form of injury in the sport and you just have to get used to them. But you can make small improvements so that the point at which a tweak becomes a full-on sprain becomes less likely. You’re not wrong about balance and reflexes being more important, but that’s even more out of our control.
    >>
the worst and most common way to roll an ankle it seems is landing fakie and your foot rolling off the edge towards where you're rolling. that's how it always happens to me. that's always in the back of my mind when I'm huckin a backside 180, fullcab, or similar trick down something. it's also why I don't really do bigspins or bigflips. if I'm gonna mess either of those up, that's usually what ends up happening.the thought of landing something primo isn't even as scary as that.

Just be friendly with other skaters at the park and ask for advice without badgering them. If your local doesn’t have a cliquey scene, most skaters are more than happy to offer tips as long as you’re not interrupting their session. Snotty kids who can barely push, stood right in the middle of the euro gap and asking me “how do I Ollie” can fuck right off, but I’ve got plenty of time for adults who are unsure on how to improve.

the spots are perfect but yeah if there's people around you're gonna get kicked out instantly. kansai might be a little more mellow though. japanese cities are ghost towns from midnight to 5 am so that's your best chance to actually skate something. if you want a more mellow session look for spots along the river/ in stigmatized areas, if you see homeless people and graffiti you'll be unlikely to get bothered
