    What's the best belt system out there?
    >>
    >>261162
    beltless -> white -> black
    non knower -> knower -> knows enough to teach and compete
    >>
    >>261162
    White
    Yellow
    Black
    Throw in red if you want something cool, but nothing more!
    >>
    >>261163
    i dont like this. most people dont know what theyre doing for at least half a year
    >>
    >>261162
    No belts. Belts are a retarded scam designed for the sole purpose of selling retards shit they don’t need.
    It’s also notoriously widespread within the meme “martial arts”. Put your average karate fag with his black belt and gay robe into a ring with an experienced mma fighter and watch the larp end.
    Fuck belts.
    >>
    >>261247
    They're a decent way to indicate skill/experience, which can be useful, for example when looking for a sparring partner
    Furthermore, they're a good motivator for trainees - "getting better" is a very nebulous thing, particularly when you're comparing yourself against other people who are also improving at a similar pace. This way there is a "checkpoint" system, and something tangible to aspire to.
    >selling
    nigga it costs less than a bigmac
    >>
    >>261293
    i dont want to train with someone whos prime motivation is a belt. you either want to get better or you dont
    >>
    >>261294
    Cool reading comprehension, grade school is over that way
    >>
    >>261162
    In an ideal world only white then black. Maybe a middle rank to show progression. Belts are a fun system to track your growth but they do more harm than good especially the egos that come from dan ranks.
    >>
    >>261294
    My prime motivation was the belt and I made it all the way to the top as a minimum effort boy
    Its not about who's best it's about who's left
    Come late, roll light, leave early
    People way more talented than me came and went down in flames eventually because they tried hard

    All that gets you is a blue belt and bad knees
    But now I have a black belt and just sit off to the side waiting to snipe people when they're tired and my legend continues to grow

    I like Judo's system
    There is a set curriculum, and you have to demonstrate proficiency with said curriculum to advance. No subjectivity or arbitrary "I just don't think you're good enough yet".
    Granted, this may lead to disparities in actual performance on the mat, where a lower belt will be able to trash a higher belt, but imo it makes sense from the standpoint that belts represent your knowledge and understanding of the art, not your health, athleticism, natural talent etc which all impact how good of a fighter you are

    Since judo only cares about your ability to answer a written questionnaire and demonstrate moves with a particular asthetic, there's no coherent argument anybody could make as to why a judo belt from the internet is less valid than one done in person

    So that's exactly what I intend to do
    >>
    never compete -> white
    win municipal/whatever -> yellow
    win state -> blue
    win national -> red
    win world -> black
    >>
    >>261483
    That's only up to brown. Blackbelts have to also compete.
    >>
    >>262046
    The difference in population between places screws this up
    >>
    >>262046
    You basically described the sambo belt system.
    >>
    >>262046
    This but with some minimum population requirement
    >>
    >>262116
    >>262121
    Nah, the point is when you compete the other guy is going full out. And when you go state it's the guy who won against another guy going full out. Impossible to equalize anyway, an underpopulated place could have a world champ living there or something.
    >>
    >>261247
    Belts are based. Martial arts = sinking 100s of hours into suboptimally preparing for a scenario that is statistically unlikely. But if you get a belt on top, it adds a cool larp aspect. "John Doe, just a regular office worker, but secretly a karate black belt"
    >>
    >>261162
    >What's the best belt system out there?
    gun belt
    >>
    white = student
    black = master
    that's all you need. if you're still under a teacher you're a student.
    >>
    >>261162
    wrestling lmfao
    >>
    >>265516
    The middle colors mark instructors-in-training who can help teach the white belts. They also help in e.g. judo where the colored belts know they can throw each other safely but should make sure the white belt actually knows breakfalls well enough before yeeting him.
    >>
    the japs and russians just have white brown and black
    >>
    >>262103
    How can you compete when no organization recognizes the ranks?

    The hate-boner a lot of people like (You) have for karate specifically is very amusing to me.
    You can go to any karate video on youtube and be guaranteed to find at least one unhinged seething commenter saying some variation of
    >grrrr this shit sucks and would never work in a real fight. The only striking martial art that works is muay thai
    And they're never by thais. It's almost always an american or a britbong actively seeking out and losing their shit at karate.
    Makes me wonder just how many americans were molested by Sensei Bob from the strip mall dojo in the 80s. That's the only explanation I can come up with for phenomenon.
