Anonymous 10/12/25(Sun)05:55:33 No. 244716 For anyone who has done a martial art Is it normal to have mixed emotions about it? None of the stuff I've tried (Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, BJJ) Has made me instantly think "omg I love this. This is it. I'm doing this for life" It's usually a combination of "well that was really difficult and tiring, is this worth it, this is going to be difficult but I'll be a better person mentally and physically, I guess.. just stick with it?" Or were you instantly hooked >>
Anonymous 10/12/25(Sun)13:41:45 No. 244737 >>244716 After doing Judo I feel so fucking relaxed and happy, it's what smoking weed is supposed to feel like but really isn't. During the training it is a struggle but afterwards I felt like I was bathing in endorphins. BJJ on the other hand didn't produce that effect on me. I just felt tired afterwards.>>
Anonymous 10/12/25(Sun)17:20:10 No. 244756 purple belt in bjj here, 7 years training. I did love it instantly and competed a LOT. did very well at local events. i think every hobby has its highs and lows, theres def days, weeks or months in a row where i'm not super motivated to train, however ive made a lot of friends that keep me motivated and there is a lot of the sport that i do love. ....i do get why people think its gay and dont enjoy it tho lol >>
Anonymous 10/13/25(Mon)04:24:13 No. 244783 >>244737 I didn't get this with judo as we didn't do any randori, we just did positional newaza, pin, and very complex and unintuitive throws I did get this feeling with boxing and wrestling as the conditioning was to the max and the sparring felt intuitive BJJ I hated but maybe it was the instructor. We didn't roll at all just practiced guard "play around in it" he said>>
Anonymous 11/07/25(Fri)06:12:52 No. 247348 >>244716 i hope you find your spark anon>>
Anonymous 11/07/25(Fri)07:06:47 No. 247357 I don't like training, it's not joyful I just want to roll around with the lads for 2 or 3 rounds then go home There's not really any reason to do anything other than that either. Training is overrated, you get better at doing things by doing the things >>
Anonymous 11/12/25(Wed)19:18:30 No. 247867 >>247357 slow your roll, i do agree to a degree however there is a time and place for specifics, and that time and place is most of the time. if you want to get good at your armbar, well, how often during a roll are you in an armbar? What if it's a more specific spot, like deep half guard? It might be an important tool, but it might be a tool that you're not in long enough, or often enough. Nothing wrong with just getting a couple of rolls in though, we all need some kind break from this retarded gay life.>>
Anonymous 11/13/25(Thu)10:04:54 No. 247890 >>244716 ive done taekwondo for some time and im pretty split on it. on one hand, i kinda like it but on the other its one of the most useless fighting styles for an actual fight. i would say the mixed feelings overall comes from what you want to get out of it and whether or not you are actually receiving such goals.>>
Anonymous 12/24/25(Wed)15:57:16 No. 251533 >>244716 >Has made me instantly think "omg I love this. This is it. I'm doing this for life" Nope. And I've been doing Judo for years. Recently just started BJJ too. It's good that this is the case. The high barrier of entry filters out most normalfags and mentally ill clowns who ruin spaces (look at what happened to video games, my poor beloved).>>
Anonymous 01/12/26(Mon)04:54:14 No. 253503 >>244716 >"well that was really difficult and tiring, is this worth it, this is going to be difficult but I'll be a better person mentally and physically, I guess.. just stick with it?" Two years in and I am still wondering when the I'm lovin it part gonna start. Have to pull myself from the chair by force to actually go to the dojo everytiem>>
Anonymous 01/12/26(Mon)13:32:11 No. 253510 >>244716 I tried kickboxing for some time, didnt really enjoied it and after a few pairings with people who just wanted to blow my head of activelly started to resent it (maybe has nothing to do with the sport and just had bad partners). Now I had some trial trainings in bjj and it just felt so much better>>
Anonymous 01/12/26(Mon)18:13:50 No. 253522 >>253510 Funnily enough I had the same thing tried kickboxing and had a super heavyweight of all people trying to aim for the Jaw with hard punches and hard head kicks.. I thought fuck this lmao. The coach was also rude and I got a weird vibe from everyone. I don't mind being hit hard but save that for a match where I can at least gain some false pride from it. Not spar for pointless damage>>
Anonymous 01/13/26(Tue)00:43:41 No. 253532 >>244783 >very complex and unintuitive >sparring felt intuitive Something "feeling" intuitive is a meme. Lots of good fighting elements aren't intuitive in the slightest. People don't intuitively tuck their chins in and throw straight punches, yet boxers do it all the time.>>
Anonymous 01/13/26(Tue)05:37:56 No. 253536 >>253532 Yeah but learning to tuck your chin and punch properly can be learned in 1 session and replicated live very quickly There's a saying you won't throw anyone in randori until at least 1-2 years in Wrestling you will take down people straight away>>

Anonymous 01/21/26(Wed)05:24:16 No. 253765 >>244716 I have trained judo, muay thai, MMA and boxing, and I was never gripped by any of them I always feel good after training, but I never managed to get really hooked As a result I have trained off again on again Even now I haven't been back to boxing since christmas I need an external motivator to keep me going back, probably a training partner - I've not had this problem with rock climbing because my gf and I go together Maybe try bringing a friend and committing with them to keep going for e.g. six weeks?>>
Anonymous 01/22/26(Thu)12:03:04 No. 253840 >>244716 I was having fun with it immediately. When I was drinking and doing drugs, when I hated my stupid fucking job, and when I was a virgin I was like "at least I can go to BJJ." Now I've done away with these sorts of things and I have my brown belt and I did a year in judo and 3 in muay thai. Now my writing is influenced by it, I cuddle my dog in BJJ positions, and class gives structure to my day I can still take solace in the fact that I get to go grab someone's lapel and shake them around. There's a bunch of paths that get you where you want to go. You probably ought to take one you enjoy walking down.>>
Anonymous 01/22/26(Thu)14:30:26 No. 253846 >>253840 How did you avoid the crippling injuries?>>
Anonymous 01/22/26(Thu)19:20:35 No. 253852 The only part I really enjoy is me grasping a certain concept and executing it, seeing my overall progress, however the training itself is just boring repetition most of the time, and that's all there's to it for me. >>
Anonymous 01/25/26(Sun)18:08:15 No. 254014 >>244716 I do for health reasons. For now. Maybe it will be more fun as I get better. Still a NOGI newb. Hardest part is of course just getting ot out of the door. When you get there, change. 1,5 hour and forget. Come home tired as shit knowing it's good for the body and mind.>>
Anonymous 01/30/26(Fri)20:31:11 No. 254446 >>253846 What do you mean? I just don't think they happen that often. I didn't go out of my way to avoid it. I got ringworm a couple times and that was the worst of it. Sometimes things ache and hurt. But I just stretch and train. I didn't even ever choose my partners wisely, just whoever wanted to rumble in any school in any country. I don't think there's very many people throwing kani basami or really in a rush to yank your arm>>

Anonymous 06/18/26(Thu)22:05:36 No. 264163 Honestly, I'm pretty new to BJJ so it's probably honeymoon phase but I did do kyokushin for 2 years-ish and I feel about the same. It just feels like a genuine respite from the workday. Everyone's there to learn and improve and we all want the same goal, but when you compare it to the workplace, the workplace is everyone's a fucking faggot and does passive aggressive shit all the damn time. It's just weird since while I really want to sock some people at work and I can't. The people at BJJ are some of the nicest people I've ever met and rolling the shit outta them to get them to tap (but like 99% of the time after a minute I'm tapping in) is just such a great feeling. It's like they say in a lot of game and shows. To really know someone's spirit you just gotta have some physical action. That gay? I mean whatever, it's true. >>
Anonymous 06/25/26(Thu)11:51:31 No. 264604 >>244716 boxing blew up my abs, makes me feel great after morning heavy bag, and has hot and horny tomboys, its great>>
Anonymous 06/26/26(Fri)02:06:49 No. 264675 >>244783 >we didn't do randori like you didn't do it first time? that's normal you gotta make sure someone is 100% not going to fuckup their fall before you get them fighting. but if the club/gym doesn't ever do randori it must suck a lot because imo the whole ruleset of judo is made to allow safe fighting>>261947 I agree with this. the only real risk is tai-otoshi at the wrong angle. you can really fucking fly but if you tuck your chin and breakfall you'll be fine. Bjj guys seem to fuck their knees more than judo from what I've seen.>>
Anonymous 06/27/26(Sat)17:20:40 No. 264826 >>264675 Yeah seoi or drop seoi you can end up going over their head face first. Happened during speed drilling once and I def shat bricks in mid air. But luckily I didn't completely go head first. Someone got drop seoi'd face first and ended up with a bleeding nose luckily. I mostly just end up with sprained toes ALL THE TIME.>>
Anonymous 07/12/26(Sun)15:57:32 No. 265912 >>244716 I'm 43 and I want to learn drunken boxing. I realize this would be a complete waste of time other than the health benefits, and sort of cringe too probably. Not to mention there's nowhere to actually learn it. Anyways, I think a lot of the enjoyment you might find comes from a good gym, meaning you're comfortable there, the people are supportive, they don't push you past your comfort level, and it's a positive atmosphere and not one where people are being try hard jerks, but it's also a legit school and not a mcdojo. It's a very unique balance to find, so yeah I think it's less the actual martial art and more the legitimacy of the school and the atmosphere.
