Love is the greatest of all spiritual virtues

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love.
    >>
Evil depends on point of view. If you win, the loser is evil, if you lose, the winner is. If you label your enemy evil, doing evil onto them is fair game according to you.
    >>
    >>6233530
Good and evil are objective. Moral relativity is irrational. But beyond that, Christianity is very clear that evil itself is what you're meant to hate, not evildoers. The only way to fight back against evil is with love, compassion and edification.

Anons please pray for me, I need guidance. I've been torn recently between Protestantism and Orthodoxy (I found Christ 10 year ago and have considered myself non-denominational or Baptist ever since although I haven't attended church in a few years) but recently I've been reading more on Orthodoxy and have begun to immerse myself in it. I find arguments and positions on both sides convincing, I lean towards Orthodoxy now but I have two main hang ups, praying to saints and the use of icons. I am familiar with the views and positions of the Orthodox churches. Anyone have any videos, arguments, or resources on such? Also anything on the first time attending an Orthodox church would be nice
    >>
    >>6234984
    >Also anything on the first time attending an Orthodox church would be nice
Fr Peter Heers had a lifestream on that, but it's pretty long. Honestly I wouldn't sweat it, just call around to the parishes around you which language they speak during liturgy and do what other members do, just don't take the eucharist yet.
The church has lived through times in which they repeatedly had to worry about spies and moles finding our places of worship and being martyred simply for attending, they'll handle some new guy wanting to take a look.
    >>
    >>6234984
    >I have two main hang ups, praying to saints and the use of icons
become catholic. then you won't have a problem with that. no icon is worshipped, they inspire worship of god and keep history alive.
when you pray to a saint you are simply asking them to pray to god on your behalf, you are praying to god still.
protestants cut out half the religion and are a shit plastic version of christianity, especially the american ones. orthodox is good but even they lack a few things, i was in your shoes, i chose catholicism because it is the O.G. christianity, the first- at one time ALL christians were catholic. every catholic i've known has been great, redpilled, and fantastic people.
    >>
    >>6232111
anyone got the traditional salve regina?
    >>
    >>6235281
The Orthodox are the OG, the Catholics broke off as the Bishop of Rome wanted power. And the things the Orthodox don't believe in such as Purgatory and indulgences were fabrications by the Catholic Church, many erroneous beliefs have slipped in over the centuries as the Catholics prioritize worldly authorities over the church fathers writings and traditions.
    >>
    >>6235295
    completely fake news.
like, so badly fake i don't know how you believe that. the schism wasn't till 1054 and it's orthodox who are schismatic, because they would not accept basic things about christianity that everyone did till that point.
    >>
    >>6235295
    >the Catholics prioritize worldly authorities over the church fathers writings and traditions.
the orthodox are literally lead by a man, the patriarch, considered "first among equals". sounds like commie nonsense.
    >>
    >>6235281
    >become catholic. then you won't have a problem with that. no icon is worshipped, they inspire worship of god and keep history alive.
Catholics also are iconodules. Also Orthodox don't worship icons and you ought to be fully aware since St. John of Damascus is also a catholic saint.
    >orthodox is good but even they lack a few things,
Like inventing new dogmas or vicars of Christ that contradict each other?

    >>6235302
    >because they would not accept basic things about christianity that everyone did till that point.
Like the ADDITION of the filioque?

    >>6235309
Oh, you're one of those people who think the pope isn't a man? Come back after you've actually been a catholic for a few years.
    >>
    >>6235343
orthodox are schizos. as is evidenced by all this seething about delusion. you lose your minds about inconsequential things like the addition of the filioque, which you have been seething about for literally 972 years. if they are all one and the same then it doesn't matter does it?

things i didn't say but you seem to have schizophrenically assumed and addressed anyways:
    >Catholics are iconodules
    >Orthodox worship icons
    >i support all the new dogmas
    >there's never been contradictions in the church
    >the pope isn't a man
    >>
    >>6235464
    >>Catholics are iconodules
You claimed that 'the use of icons' is not a problem with catholics. This means that catholics don't use icons (disproved by this point) or that Orthodox 'use' icons incorrectly (also wrong as seen by the rest of the sentence you quoted). The 'usage' of icons we have (veneration) stems directly from ecumencial councils and multiple saints the catholics also canonized.
    >>i support all the new dogmas
If you don't then you are literally and directly not in harmony with the current 'vicar of Christ' and all the previous ones who were in harmony with him. You are not in communion with the 'head of (your) church'.
    >>there's never been contradictions in the church
There have been disagreements, but the church can not hold two contradictory opinions as that'd mean the body of Christ is torn apart and fighting against itself. If you read the Bible you'd recognize that Christ proved His divinity by not being turned against Himself. Where's the problem for 'catholics'? Popes held contradictory opinions which they believed to be absolute.
    >>the pope isn't a man
Then why are you claiming the Orthodox are lead by a man (that's also false btw, we have multiple patriarchs who are equal to each other and we do not see our deacons, priests, monks, bishops, metropolitans or even patriarchs as infallible) and that this is 'commie nonsense'?

Honestly, your arguments are so weak that I have to assume you're that guy who's also roleplaying as a talmudic jew and muslim just to bait some controversy here.
    >>
    >>6235915
tl;dr i'm not making arguments because i have nothing to prove to you, this is why i think orthodox is cope, you orthos always feel the need to debate everything and prove everything and get into all this minutia that doesn't matter.
I'm catholic, i believe this is the right path, i believe your path is also apostolic and correct, but catholicism is also the christianity of the west, you can't deny that. culturally orthodox does not fit western or even central europe.
    >>
    >>6236181
Your claims imply that different people need different churches. Different churches imply different Christs or that Christ's body is torn apart and contradicting itself. The churches (RC and Orthodoxy) do not agree on the creed so therefore they are necessarily different.
The only way you can come out of this is by saying that there are lots of ways up the mountain, a teaching that lead to the acceptance of islam, judaism, new age bs and even occultism in the west. It'd also mean that none of the churches that claim to be the body of Christ are actually the body of Christ and therefore the gates of hell actually prevailed.

Hello /jcg/. I seek advice from you. I started exploring my faith half a year ago and started attending a church every Sunday. I left the country for the summer break (university), but only attended church once. For context, I come from an atheist family and didn't want to have that discussion at home. I also didn't keep correspondence, because with each day that passed it felt more awkward and cringey to write back. I skipped the first Sunday. But now I have to square my debts. Sunday church is tomorrow. I don't want to show out of the blue and I also don't want to lie.
What do I write back? How do I communicate that never intended for things to be this way.
    >>
    >>6237549
I'm unsure if I got your dilemma but in my experience most 'atheists' simply try to be neutral on the matter of religion so if you tell them that you've been attending church lately they likely won't bat an eye and might even support you. In the end, you need to make sure that you do what you feel is the correct choice, not the comfortable one. If you chasing after God angers your family, that's something you need to accept. However, we also have lots of examples in the church of people starting to inquire into the faith simply because a friend or family member started going to church. Keep at it, pray for them and soon enough you will find a suitable solution for yourself and them.
What you however should not do is abandon them. The Lord never said that it's unacceptable for a church member to talk to non-church members. I'm unsure how much of the Bible you read but if you read acts 10 you see that Peter, despite first adhering to the more strict rules the Jews had about not talking to non-Jews, was instructed to talk to all people, regardless of their faith.
    Hope this helps, anon

I returned like a dog to his vomit, to porn, which harmed my mind, self image, and even identity somewhat. I feel in the shadow of this sin and I don't know what to do. Certain life events took my life out of my own hands, and I think came to humble me, foster genuine gratitude in me, helped me overcome irritability with people, a problem I had for a long time and affected people in my life, made me think about death, and I was grateful it happened because I think it was good for my soul. The events removed me from the occasion for this sin and I think helped me become sober enough from it to see it more in truth, at least enough to know better than to return to it, but still, days later, I returned to it. I feel like my irritability returned and I've just felt in a bad way since then, the good feelings I had going after the aforementioned life events isn't there, and I woke up one mourning not wanting to get out of bed, just like I did before, no zest for life. I'm a retarded fool and I feel like I've squandered God's grace, and spit on what he gave me. I'm sick and retarded. My cross isn't that heavy, yet here I am.

How do you even repent of in action spitting on a gracious chastening given by God? How do you repent of going right back to the old man of sin like it meant nothing and becoming almost possessed by that way of being?
    >>
    >>6245418
Repentance isn't just saying you're sorry, it's about having the desire to turn back from the mud you're in back to Christ. That means the resolve you have about not committing your sin again as you talk to your spiritual father needs to translate into you forming your life in a way that makes it easier to keep by Christ's side.
Let's say you always pass by some beggar on your way to work and you never give him money. Next time you walk past your bank you can withdraw some amount and keep it in your pockets, your phone case etc. so you can give it to him quicker than you might have second thoughts. If you find excuses why you should go to the bank then give yourself some structure in life. Let's say you withdraw enough cash to give to him for two weeks, then you make a plan that every other week you go to the bank, be it after getting groceries, after gym, after work etc.
Show Christ you mean it, not by your words but by your actions.
    >But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first.

Not that helper. I'm referring to the Paraclete. Genesis and subsequent OT uses of helper are עֵ֖זֶר (‘ê·zer), which I don't see having been used in the same way. Paraklētos is certainly a separate thing; don't get confused, the Christian's great commission is not to marry, go forth, and multiply in a carnal sense. Instead, recall Mark 16:15.

Obviously Muslims kill more Christians. They're Muslims. Killing innocent people is their whole thing. To say otherwise is like saying the Earth is flat. It is legal to be Christian in Israel. I have met many Christians from Israel, and they can get by just fine. On the other hand, how many Muslim countries is it illegal to be Christian? How many Muslims countries will the put Christians to death?

There are no notable differences between Greek, Antiochian, Serbian, Russian etc. Orthodox churches when it comes to the beliefs. Some follow the Russian tradition, others the Byzantine one. Same liturgical text (The Divine Liturgy by John Chrysostomos), different style of singing, Russian tradition churches normally only stand.
The main difference is the liturgical language. If you're in the US, your local parish will likely have the liturgy in English, otherwise it'll likely be the liturgical language of the Patriarchate (Greek, Russian, Arabic, Romanian etc.) but you can easily find that out online and follow along in English. Unless you speak any of those languages, just try out the different parishes and see which one you feel the closest connection to.

You should dress modestly. If you wanna wear a suit that's fine but a button down shirt with good pants is already enough. Some parishes are more chill when it comes to the dress code, just don't expect you can do in with shorts or like you're there for entertainment.

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

There is neither Jew nor Roman, neither servant nor centurion, nor is there son and daughter, for you are all one in Christ Jesus

The centurion's servant was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told the salvation of God about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she again began to serve.

doesn't like it. Back to back posts and everything.
There's a lot of performative, symbolic Christianity today, and young men are falling victim to springing up on the footpath because of how the footpath dresses or what music is chosen. Schism itself is a sin we continue in, and while I prefer people to be in any church vice no church, the church isn't what saves. The strip mall church isn't less suited for good works by location, and it's blatantly pharisaical to thumb the nose at low churches as though they can't sow for that future harvest.

I'm a Southern Baptist and believe that baptism is not required for salvation. I do not believe that liturgy is a part of salvation. I do not believe that Mary was ever without sin, and I do not believe Jesus went to Hell following his crucifixion. While I believe the process of sanctification involves the compulsion at the Spirit's behest to do works in His name, I do not believe that ones salvation is dependent on those works. These are some fairly milquetoast statements made often in my church that I also profess, but they're certainly not universal or even common outside Baptist. I will pray for you; I'd want you in a Bible preaching church, denomination aside. I do want to make clear that there is more difference between them than high and low dressings and tradition.

Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.
    For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part;
but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.
    When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child;
when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways.
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

    >And that person, indwelt by the Helper, is offering their own wisdom? Obviously not. I agree with
The point is that you can not simply dismiss other people and claim you can solely rely on the Holy Spirit as we've seen the Holy Spirit work through other people. Anyone reading the Book of Acts can see that clearly.
    >the church isn't what saves.
The church is Christ's body. Multiple verses show this but Col 1:18
    >And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
So by your statement Christ does not save or the body works outside of the realm of the head. You remove Christ's role as the savior or call Him severely ill.

    >>6260198
If baptism were not needed, Christ wouldn't have advised us to baptise. If you deny the necessity of liturgy, you deny God's right to be praised. If Mary was sinful then Christ chose any time at random and her sanctification and role in Heaven is just arbitrary. If Christ didn't go to Hades He could not have destroyed it and He would not be human as all humans went to Hades. If works were not necessary for saving, then the Book of James is filled with lies and the Bible is unreliable.

Okay. I could argue and try to explain why I think you're wrong, but why? My position is not solely my own. Yours is classically Orthodox, and newly Orthodox by the way you communicate. When I ask about these things (I specifically chose things affirmed by my church), I will be told by my church leadership that something like claiming Mary's immaculate conception is borderline heretical. I'm not flippantly throwing out sensitive topics, and your one sentence responses are not sufficient to reconcile misconceptions that have grown as tumors in the Catholics and Orthodox. These are core differences, as you evidence by your immediate allegation of my misplacing the Christ. There is not a middle ground for compromise about those topics, by and large. Either Mary was holy or she wasn't. The implications are vast, despite the simplicity of the question. I will maintain that only one man has ever been free of sin, and that was Jesus. Mary could never compete with him in that.

Orthodoxy does not subscribe to the doctrine of immaculate conception, that's solely a Catholic thing. Orthodoxy would say that it cannot be simply due to the dormition: if Mary was affected in no way by sin, she wouldn't have died.
In general, the Orthodox view of original sin is different, hence a preference to refer to it as Ancestral Sin: all humans including Mary are affected by the ancestral effects of sin. Namely, the tendency to commit personal sin and being subject to death. The difference is that Orthodoxy rejects the notion that guilt could be inherited.
The Orthodox doctrine with regard to Mary is to say that she was affected by the ancestral effects of sin with regard to death, hence the dormition. However, although she was also subject to the tendency to commit personal sin, the gnomic will as Maximus the Confessor calls it, she was kept pure of personal sin by the grace of God.
Christ alone was free of both being subject to death and the gnomic will as His divine nature divinized His human nature, but He still condescended to undergo the so called blameless passions like hunger, thirst and fear of death.
The Orthodox view of salvation is then inherently tied to us partaking similarly of divinity (essence / energies distinction) and the Theotokos partook of it in a very special way due to quite literally bearing Christ.

I provided a variety of examples from a both Catholic and Orthodox teaching. I am also aware of catechism 2283 and would chastise Catholics who condemn those victims of suicide with their words. Regarding Orthodox teaching, I know you think that and therefore tacitly condemn those who don't partake, such as Protestants. Boiled down, I think you'll go to heaven, but I don't think I meet your mark for the minimum requirements, and I'm not interested in arguing why I'm saved. I do think you're wrong and mincing words in a way that is intellectually the same as praying loudly in the temples, but I think you'll go to heaven if you confess that Christ is Lord.

Any Orthodox who has been catechized correctly will not make direct judgements about anyone's ultimate status when salvation is concerned.
That is ultimately up to God.
However, Christ set up a Church as the normative means of salvation, and that Church has been promised to not fall away. When the Orthodox refer to one thing or another as necessary for salvation, it's related to those normative means that have been handed down.
That is not to say God couldn't save someone through extra-normative means, but just because God could save someone through said extra-normative means, those possible exceptions, which there are according to the saints, do not mean we can ignore what has been handed down from the Apostles, the apostolic fathers and the early Church. Still, even our notion of praying for those outside the Church is as if attempting to lower a sick man through the skylight into the mystical body.
And lastly, if faith alone was sufficient, then demons would be saved.
