If I develop chess variants, what should I pay attention to that other games tend to get wrong? Is it even worth trying to break into this space?
chess is a puzzle game not a strategy
why would they be on steam? it's not really a gamer type game. don't the big sites already offer fisher random and such
why would i play your goofy chess variant when i could just play chess, or some game that isn't chess-but-x
>>2508660>Why is chess so popularit's old. and not bad for an old game. everyone knows of it, but few people know it.>but there are no popular chess variants on steamthere are plenty, and not just on steam. but that's the problem. divides the audience.people capable of playing and enjoying those kind of games are usually capable of making those kinds of games themselves.for a long while now, games have been all about marketing.there are so many chess games on steam it's not even funny. type "chess" in search. and that is just off by name, where most are implementation of the base game.if you want to make money making games, find an unknown game with a cool concept, completely rework it through constant playtesting and refining, then when all core gaming concepts are implemented,(ends at the peak of fun, a session is around 45 minutes, makes you feel like your actions matter, but keeps it "fresh", and doesn't rely on single strategy, bunch of other psychological tricks),you do an astro turf campaign, get few popular streamers to review your game, and if you get really lucky, you just about made your money back.https://www.steampageanalyzer.com/blog/how-much-does-steam-game-makeWith what above is saying, you'd need to aim to release 4 games or so a year minimum.anything less than that, stick to burger flipping.

Chess has a marketing problem, it seems like a stuffy old game for old fucks. Rename the pieces>KingBeta>QueenKWEEEEENNNN>BishopInfluencer>KnightSimp>RookGoontower>PawnSIGMA, because they just move forward on their grindsets

>>2508660Few people play chess vidya, even fewer will be into derivatives. Instead, take the chess theme and make something else, like rogueshite or horrorslop (with waifu). I think a Balatro clone with simplified gameplay and extremely addictive scoring gimmick could do the trick.

>>2508660Chess only got popular because it lets midwits and pick-me bitches larp as intelligent. Which is funny because functional adults already know that chess is primarily a knowledge-check and not an intelligence-check. Note that child-brains are incapable of grasping the difference. It's already been shown many times, but chess fans are idiots and chess "pros" are grifters.

>>2509572>Chess only got popular because it lets midwits and pick-me bitches larp as intelligenti can't stand chess because it strongly premiers memorization over intuition. i'm not bad at memorizing things, but a few thousand chess openings? fuck that. i want to vibe with the game.this is why a moderate chance element is essential to a good game btw
>>2509592>i don't like memorizing thingsOk.> i want to vibe with the gameSure whatever.>therefore, RNG is goodThe fuck?
>>2509592>Anon invents Fischer Random Yes it is better. You're right that chess is the (THE) metafag game where the best players are distinguished by an encyclopedic knowledge of opening theory and past games more than anything else. So we have variants like Fischer Random that try to disrupt this.
>>2509572Cool how you differentiate the pros as grifters because you know you can't beat the pros.

>>2508713i know chess.my brother in law is really good at chess.my nephew won at his state competition a few years back.its a fun game when you have people to play it for fun.but when its against people that are in a competitive mindset it loses all its appeal.part of the game is the fraternization.when you go out of your way to min/max every aspect of the game you end up ruining it for those you're playing with, the casuals.that said, it is fun, i just wish linux had a good chess program to play in.
>>2509592>i can't stand chess because it strongly premiers memorization over intuitionIronically this is also one of the reasons chess is so enduring. At a low level it can be played on intuition and intelligence but as you reach a higher level memorisation and pattern recognition begins to take priority. It offers a graduated experiance that rewards a deeper knowledge of the game. You can play casual and you can play with purpose. The issue is with perception, we're shown the opposite of this in media because rote memorisation isn't enjoyable to the outside observer. So you end up with a bunch of "intelligent" kids thinking they can get to a high level of play without having a deeper knowledge of the game and when they're put in check (pun intended) they feel dishearted. Throw in a fragile ego and they'll learn a few book openings just so they can dunk on others and pretend they're smarter than they are, then when they reach a higher level player its the same thing all over. You have people who play chess for the game and people who play for their ego, and it's the latter who are most vocal about the game because they have the need to vent their frustrations.
>>2509813That's why I think chess (at least the electronic variant, where you can actually use various software tricks) should be played with fog of war (only seeing as far as your pieces can move) and randomized board layout (but keeping things like a pawn first line, separate color bishops, and castling-friendly king/rook placement). It completely deletes the rote memorization element.
>>2508660Because it's a mobile game
>chess prioritises memorizationit's clear that whoever says this has either never played or is a regional/world champion.below 2k elo memory plays a very, very small role.i play club and easily stomp noobs who rely on memorization while having a few pints
