I've been waiting for this for 10 years. Tried decompiling this myself back in 2016, but it was too much work without AI.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNLHKnZfS0w
So what does this mean for strategy games?
>>2506389This is a proof-of-concept.Decompiling games basically removes all technical limitations on what modders can do and makes those mods vastly less difficult to make. 64bit mods removing decade-old performance bottlenecks for old games is now on the table, as are graphic updates, hd retextures, modern rendering tech, etc.The ones that stand to benefit the most are old games with still-active modding communities like Empire at War or FAF but the sky's basically the limit now.
>>2506408Cool.
>>2506408This is actually pretty cool, mainly because it's a gateway to updating the SupCom engine. It'll also send BARfags seething, after the whole debacle with the newdevs trying of secretly trying to sell-off what is essentially an open-source community-made game for a quick buck they stated working on a furry-fetish campaign to sell as an add-on. If SupCom gets an update they'll have to hero theyselves.
when will human infantry be added
>>2506408>>2506366So it's not open source, it's just AI decompiled. This is some menace "general" tier cope.
spring has existed for over 20 years now
>>2506366There's another open source Total Annihilation project called Nanolathe. Both projects seem to have appeared around the same time, and it feels like they're competing with each other. So far, I find Nanolathe more fun to play.>GitHub:https://github.com/nanolathe-gg/nanolathe>Trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMWSCOY0dTcCurious to see which one comes out on top in the long run.
>AI decomp
literally who cares?it's aoe2/broodwar style multiplayer
>>2506539>>AI decompwhy is this a bad thing? It's one of the best uses for AI. You want to sit there and turn word_DEADFA65 into a meaningful symbol name for all 100k variables in the game?
>>2506478No it is basically open source.I see no difference at all when compiling and playing this game and playing the OG version via wine.
>>2506366can this decompiling be used for games like homeworld cataclysm
>>2506366So you are saying that it wasn't open-source and other people had already recreated the game on another engine like a doz- >>2506510 two dozen years ago? Also, open-source usually means someone actually gave away the source code, even if "unlawfully" like how one Capstone dev gave away source codes for Witchaven games without consulting the lawyers, the dead company or any potential rights holders (chad). The AI is a cool tool (why else would ((they)) try to hype it up to castrate/remove the programs available to general public?) but come on now, I think decompiling Myth and Myth II would be a bigger news.
Finally, we can play Total Annihilation!Anyway
>>2506620Usually the point of source code is it is easier to read. AI decomps usually aren't. Thus the whole "modders will have a field day with this" point is a miss
Isn't TA basically abandonware at this point
>>2510235Modders already have a field day with this though.
Isn't BAR just TA but better at this point?
>>2510921BAR isn't fun to me. It's visually neat but I never had fun with it. Also, one thing that TA is very different from Supreme Commander and other spring games is the scale; you're closer to the action in TA and I find it more immersive.
>>2510921Not quite, it's a bit of a convoluted mish-mash.The SpringEngine was heavily inspired by SupCom, the successor to TA.BA was an attempt to recreate TA in the SpringEngine while taking advantage of SupComs/SE features.Zero-K and BAR both forked from BA, BAR drew more heavily from SupCom.BAR has now gone its own way to distinguish itself further from BA/TA in an attempt at monetization.>>2511381>BAR isn't fun to me. It's visually neat but I never had fun with it.You might want to try Zero-K, while BAR focused on graphics and drawing from SupCom, Zero-K threw it out the window and focused on gameplay features and mechanics. It's quite a different beast, you can quite literally level mountains and deepstrike units across the map in to enemy territory using catapults. It also adds an AI to individual units that lets them to skirmish without your input creating a much more dynamic feel to the battlefield.
