It's interesting how paradox seems to repeat, on purpose or accident, what many conservatives at this time were saying about people not being mature for democracy.
If you enact universal voting too early you'll be franchising millions of peasants voting for the most horrid politics you've ever seen.
    >>
    >>2504360
    >on purpose or accident
Yes and no, this is the basis for leftist vanguardism; with the goal of guiding the people into a preferred democracy. Remember, to leftists liberal-democratic parliamentarism, by their own words, isn't really anything more than a tool to be used. As you see a lot of the time, when leftist and liberal parties get votes it's a victory for democracy, when right wing parties get votes it's a dark day for democracy and we're heading into tyranny. Putin and Xi are dictators, but cancelling elections in Romania and possibly banning the largest party in Germany are simple necessary to defend liberal-democracy and so on and so forth.

I don't think they're actually brave enough to make the case against liberal democracy, but they're willing to represent liberal-democracy as a stepping stone to socialism.

I don't understand how I am to build so many things in so many states so quickly without going bankrupt. I start a game and put in the recommended builds and back out to see it's going to take 13 years to build it all. Increase construction sectors? Now I'm in the red and interest is running out of control. Then JE says I have to build 100 farms in 10 years or face a malus.
    >>
    >>2504170
I remember when it would always become a theocracy and I'd wonder how the fuck that would happen as you have to go out of your way with bad law choices to annoy them.
    >>
    >>2504360
    >people not being mature for democracy
    Yes but maybe not.
Originally the game had an social democratic ending via the inevitable rise of the urban worker class (they were automagically middle class wealth SoL compared to today's game).
They sidestepped this point by making the peasants not care about suffrage, as though it wasn't a hot issue in superstar European countries running up to and following 1836. They also refused to outline, to this day, actual mechanics or criticism of democracy or failed democracies, where Vicky II might mention American voting systems, rotten boroughs, and I think even gerrymandering, Victoria 3 only has a vague "Public trust in the system" meter where if public trust is low you can... uh... well it's not clear if you're stuffing ballots but the side you want to win, well, wins.
    >voting for the most horrid politics
Zero interest in head of state or suffrage = you can fix your problem.
I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with their laws at startdate/in a backwater. They have literally no opinion on a lot of laws. To this day I'm not sure I understand why they have an opinion on immigration, why the urban workers tacitly support free movement, why the petite boog don't like or even have an opinion on free movement, and then also why the petite boog have an opinion on navy laws that is "I want big gun ships, I LOVE imperialism" and not "I want peaceful trade ships please stop going to war, my import business will collapse".

Countries with unique IG beliefs, like Russia's Orthodox Church, have the worst lawsets in the game. Rural folx are only a problem to people who want to GDP max and yet don't slobber at the opportunity to relax race (wage) laws.
    >>
    >>2504529
Universities don't teach your people to read.
    Education law does.
However it also creates radicals due to expected SoL going up with literacy.
I haven't double checked if the game follows real history where literacy went down thanks to the industrial revolution (doing so would probably fuck with your ability to tech as much as designed by the annoying tech tree).
    >>
    >>2504603
    >Universities don't teach your people to read
Maybe not anymore, but they used to, and they probably should.
    >>
    >>2504567
Build construction goods, which make constriction cheaper allowing for more construction. It's called a feedback loop.
    >>
Hot take: the game would be better without the construction loop. Building more iron for cheaper iron to get more iron makes no sense. It's a literal ponzi scheme.
    >>
    >>2504605
Nope, they never did. You're thinking of other games.
    >>
    >>2504619
The construction loop doesn't exist, it's a myth. Imagine the private sector didn't exist and you, the government, were the only actor able to build things. When you build something, you lose more money than you gain in the short term from dividends. Now you have two paths:
    1. Keep building construction goods forever, permanently at a deficit, which eventually causes you to go bankrupt, ending the construction loop and collapsing the entire economy.
    2. Stop building construction goods, which kills the demand for goods and destroys the economy.

Basically, it's impossible to permanently sustain your economy on the loop. It only works so long as the cheaper construction goods are used to create other sort resources, which makes perfect sense.
    >>
    >>2504605
    >>2504622
    Universities increase qualifications though right?
Is that no related to education?
    >>

    >went down thanks to the industrial revolution
Nordic countries had very high literacy while being agrarian shitholes though and portugoal didn't have full litteracy till revently.
    >>
    >>2504631
Incorrect. Growing the economy gives you magic free money via minting. I'm 100% sure this was done to reinforce the construction loop.
    >>
    >>2504633
Qualifications do nothing. In a way that's actually a good thing, since the mechanic is completely opaque and really retarded in the way it works.
    >>
    >>2504637
Why do they even exist then...?
    >>
    >>2504637
Early in the game they do. Sometimes provinces won't hire for certain buildings unless I enact social mobiloty edict.
After the first decades it stops mattering.
    >>
    >>2504640
Placebo. They will hire even if you don't use the decrees.

it's easy to understand the things the game actually explains
unfortunately like 1/3 of the mechanics in the game are a black box that's impossible to learn how they work without datamining or spending hours trial and erroring the same situation over and over again
    >>

Haven't played it in a while either, you should ask /eu5/
They're making some pretty big changes tho so you might want to wait before asking.

    >Wars are in smoe ways worse tho. You got your toy soldiers but they lose morale while marching so if you don't babysit them you may lose your whole army to a stack of peasant rebels
How did pdx, known for their war simulators, fuck up warfare in vic3 and eu5 so badly? is it just a completely different dev team? are they just retarded? Is it that hard to make a war system that isn't complete garbage?

I feel pdx of today is a completely different company than it was back then, as i said in another reply; i think modern pdx are just a bunch of theatre kids making stuff for other theatre kids while old pdx were autists making games for other autists.

Think i'm just gonna stop buying pdx stuff until they either get replaced by someone else or make better stuff. HoI4 NSB was maybe the last good thing they made before everything went downhill.
    >>
I haven't paid attention much to the beta but have they done any changes to laws and negotiations or is it still just RNG bullshit? I remember for negotiations only political concessions were worthwhile but then PDX in all their infinite wisdom added an authority malus to concessions that only goes away if the concession is removed (which is next to impossible unless you change laws)
    >>
    >>2504633
    >>2504638
    Qualifications qualify you to work.
It's a very modern way to think that in history everyone who was more than a farmhand had to have gone to university to learn how to work.

Qualifications are mostly derived from literacy and wealth but vary per target profession (and the pop's current profession). Universities increase qualification gain... it is not clear if this is a flat amount or a modifier. If it's a modifier then universities are really shit for anything beyond research and making their own pops literate intelligentsia/clergy.
It's kind of funny looking at the Officer job and that, by default, normal soldiers are just as likely to become officers as the nobility (I'm not aware enough to know if that's true today, let alone a simulation that doesn't get to WWII), and the only two laws that prevent this radical equality are Peasant Levies and Serfdom.
Thinking about it, if this game did actually place real restrictions on class mobility, I think the simulation would probably fall apart.
    >>
    >>2504649
    >+25% education access
I think this is the most important part because that's +25% literacy, depending on how fast it is applied.
    This directly applies to qualifications.
    >+25% qualifications
Paired with a gain in education, you are effectively double-dipping.

Given how strong this seemingly is, and that Nazee decrees (violent suppression/national values) have law restrictions, arguably this decree should not be allowed without a good guy law enacted, though the simulation would make it meaningless with how cookie clicker it is.

That just means you aren't expanding quickly enough. Also, universities are for tech, not literacy.
    >>
    >>2504601
Literally only industrialists support no migration controls, which is indeed historical.
    >>
    >>2504631
Except you know, all the now much wealthier ex-peasants looking to spend their shiny new wages and thus now generating a much higher demand for various consumer products.
    >>
    >>2505286
That doesn't contradict what I said. Those workers can only buy goods that are being produced. If they're being produced, then your country isn't relying solely on the construction loop to grow.
    >>
    >>2505289
But the existence (and growth) of productive facilities for consumer goods are contingent on sufficient construction capacity being available in the economy, thus making the construction sector and its inputs the driver of the economy in total.
    >>
    >>2505294
Which makes perfect sense. If you have an economy that is just full of peasants living in mud huts, and you want to industrialize it, that's gonna require a lot of resources, and the cheaper those resources are, the easier it's going to be to build all that.
    >>
    >>2505296
So the construction loop does exist then, as maintaining that capacity requires balancing the costs of inputs.
    >>
    >>2505298
If you're going to define the construction loop like that, then you can also talk about a consumer's good required to make the construction loop profitable. And even then it would be flawed, because I could argue that I could just import all construction goods and just avoid it entirely and still have a profitable economy. In fact I've done it before when I had no other choice, when playing as Ethiopia.
    >>
    >>2505300
That doesn't work because the AI doesn't produce shit. The world market has nothing to buy.
    >>

    >>
    >>2505300
Production inputs in themselves also inevitably turn profitable once your production exceeds the maximum possible demand of the construction sector, and is then offloaded to the world market. Your issue with the construction loop only arises if we assume absolutely no trade and that the game allowed infinite scaling of construction sectors.

It'd be beyond the scope of any macro level simulation to do more than delete a conquered kingdom's nobility and reassign ownership to the conquering pops.

It still amazes me there was a time when paradox said priests were educators, rather than a production method.

What kind of fucking crack is Paradox smoking? How is this retarded game years old and still you have a 10:1 numbers advantage and get BTFO because you're the attacker. Literally 50,000 Skirmish Infantry + Mobile Artillery losing against 5,000 Skirmish Infantry. A front shows you 90 advantage and you lose every single battle. This company is unsalvageable.

Had this bizarre issue in my latest campaign where a small part of my population(1m peasants when I had like 20m working adults) were always peasants despite me having used up all arable land, has anybody else had anything like this? >Engels offers an apposite account of an uprising in Spain in 1872–73 in which anarchists seized power in municipalities across the country. At first, the situation looked promising. The king had abdicated and the bourgeois government could muster but a few thousand ill-trained troops. Yet this ragtag force prevailed because it faced a thoroughly parochialized rebellion. “Each town proclaimed itself as a sovereign canton and set up a revolutionary committee (junta),” Engels writes. “[E]ach town acted on its own, declaring that the important thing was not cooperation with other towns but separation from them, thus precluding any possibility of a combined attack [against bourgeois forces].” It was “the fragmentation and isolation of the revolutionary forces which enabled the government troops to smash one revolt after the other.”

I say this and look like this.
Victoria 3 was made during the summer of floyd and it shows hard. Mask mandate references, defund the police events, the entire pollution mechanic.
Victoria 2 was made with the same ideological leanings (soc-liberalism is the end point of history and you WILL have perpetual revolts until you achieve that state) but they managed to do it without the constant self-flagellatory snark.
I just want to be a Victorian gentleman, not attend a lecture on the history of intersectionalist theory.

    >>2508612
Considering the only in-game solution to pollution is socialized healthcare? Yes, it's propaganda.
    >>
its not that it wasn't a problem its just that they didn't let it affect policy in any way, and as such it has no reason to exist in a grand strategy game other than political grandstanding about modern day issues
people were literally falling in the thames because the industrial smog was so thick they couldn't see where they were walking, but nothing was ever legislated in a way that is represented by the laws in game

also think its cute how you defend victoria 3's honor due to agreeing with it politically here every single day, showing you don't actually play the game because you don't enjoy it
difference between victoria 2 and victoria 3 is victoria 2 was a game people actually played and enjoyed, victoria 3 is just a game people agree with while never actually launching it
    >>

Makes light of the genuine issue of mental health in the modern day really, but it's this performative box-ticking form of progressivism where appearing to be virtuous is far more important than anything, again extremely evident of this summer of floyd mentality behind the development of the game.
Again, Victoria 2 was an avowedly Marxist game, with concepts such as consciousness woven into the fabric of it, but they managed to do that without beating the player over the head. I'm not averse to these political opinions, but all they're doing with their sanctimonious gloating is preaching to the choir, people who already agree with them will agree harder and people who don't will be turned off.
    >>2508627
Yeah, I'm not booting up a game that is ore than a decade old purely because its sequel is a steaming pile of dogshit. Victoria 2 is mechanically outdated now, a curse that comes for pretty much every game except maybe chess. Doesn't mean it wasn't hot shit back in the day.

He's stuck in the '80s and doesn't touch grass... to put it one way, if he attended a palestine rally, 1) he's unable to tell you what the palestine flag is (completely blind to it), 2) wouldn't like how hating israel isn't about principles like the good ol' days but something about a funny moon and star religion being the best thing ever, and 3) confused where all these brown people came from.
Mother is more like one of Orwell's lines about women being at the forefront of the party.
Both boomers, both contradictory politically. Mother has a hatred of communists but worked for the state their entire lives (their original private jobs were gained with a firm handshake), jingoist until the wrong man decides on war, fundamentalist but never attended church, thinks there's no money left to pay people but that her pension needs to go up every year, perhaps you could call it deeply held vibes.

I'm surprised that, given Victoria 3 should be majority millennial behind the wheel, there's not much ageism given what boomers slung out for decades. There's not even a governing party loyalty effect for the pension law or anything recording property in a landowner-rentoid dynamic.

Tacked on mechanic that is solved through state doctors.
We have event artwork for sophisticated black royalty, oppressed blacks, and blacks in the foreign legion (ironic given france had unga bungas who didn't know what bullets were, or how to not commit warcrimes in the trenches), and yet the only "black country" artwork we have is when you fill a state with a lot of mines, and it looks positively clean.
In fact the game seems a little light on a victorian perspective...

realest shit i've seen here. from a gameplay perspective it's just a mid cookie clicker, but people will god defend it simply because they agree with the devs. It's not even that i'm pissed vic3 is what it is, but that people who defend it pretend it isn't something it very obviously is. If they want their larp game, fine, just don't pretend it isn't.

that's also pretty tiring. I'ts not just yellow paint like most normie games, but it's not that much more subtle. You just know exactly who wrote and made this game simply from how it's written. I really recommend checking the devlog for norway's alt hist paths for the old hoi4 scandinavian dlc, paints a good picture.

The bureaucracy isn't enough of an enemy. You can just defund any institution for no good reason.

Police power bloc is insanely powerful, especially for springtime of nations. 25% activism reduction and 250 extra authority is nothing to sneeze at and you just go dedicated police if you don't want to deal with landowners
    >>
    >>2508832
Most radicals come from SOL / legitimacy, so police does nothing. Using up an entire power bloc principal just for authority is a huge waste. It's not even free, since for populous countries police is very expensive.

It's less about radicals and more about movement activism. the radical movement is a pain in the ass and becomes even more of a pain during springtime, so having a 25% baseline reduction in activism prevents them from starting a revolution (and staying below the activism threshold for radical generation is important with how big the movement initially gets)
Once the radical movement is dealt with you can shift that bureaucracy and mandate slot to something else

Yes but not necessarily, there's a dlc_load.json or whatever under My Documents/Paradogs/Vic3/ that you can write the mods directly into I believe, although you'd need to guess your way into getting the syntax right. You don't need to bother with that unless your launcher is somehow broken though, you can just plop the mods under /Paradogs/Vic3/mods and you won't even need to modify descriptors, the launcher will see the mods and you can just play like that.
    >If you own the base game, can you slap the DLC files into the game folder, load the mod, start the game, and you are good?
Check CreamApi, I never used it so I can't tell you much but it is supposed to be very easy to play with DLC. The launcher won't do anything to you, even when you've cracked the game it'll just tell you it can't verify the DLC but still allow you to load the game and play with them.

I've come to the conclusion that maxed out public schools is really bad. It raises SOL expectations above what you can fulfill. Trade sucks so there's no global demand for goods, so none of your industries will be profitable enough to support high wages. Labor-saving PMs are utterly worthless because decrease profitability (and usually productivity too). I think you're genuinely expected to go for cooperative ownership.

part of the issue is that the relation between literacy and max innovation is linear. The difference between maxed out religious schools and public schools is 12.5 literacy. Or a measly 20 innovation. And that difference starts going away as your pop moves past 14 SOI and improves literacy due to wealth. Innovation also suffers from limiting returns. Hope they spice out the traditionalism law some time. Japan and the Ottoman empire while not modern had very different societal systems that allowed one to get on par with the west the the other one failed.
    >>
Ngl, interest groups have been pretty pointless and easy to game since they added movements and allowed you to assign agitators as leaders.

Negotiations are by far the biggest tool added and let you skip some very annoying potential stall events (serfdom is very easy to abolish if you can negotiate with the landowners as they'll almost always ask for a state redemption tax. same with most IGs and passing tax laws or the clergy and no migration controls)

I see the game is on sale right now and I'm tempted to buy it. My favorite paradox games are CK2, EU5, V2, EU4, and HOI4 (in that order - haven't played the other ones XD)
In fact I very nearly did buy it last night but then I found out the game has totally abstract warfare system where instead of fighting the wars it's an even worse version of HOI4 (which I strongly dislike because you can't control the individual armies very well but instead assign divisions to a general and then right click warsaw or whatever)
So I guess my question is how much of a dealbreaker is the warfare system? From what I understand it's even worse than HOI4 in that I dont even get individual generals to assign units to but rather just assign them to entire "fronts" as in if I'm playing as Germany I might be able to assign soldiers to the west, east, south etc
I'm ngl I really enjoy the war system in CK2 and EU5 / EU4 and V2. It has it's dumb quirks (like sieges can be annoying) but I find it quite fun and it's definitely something I enjoy about playing paradox games.
I guess my question is how "good" is the rest of the game? Does it "compensate" for this new "warfare" system? Is the V3 system "fun" at all? And is there a chance it gets "fixed" by an upcoming update? Is there any point in buying right now if the game will go on sale again and maybe "fix" the warfare system?
Also my current understanding is the two DLC (something like Charts and Commerce and Spheres of influence) are "essential" but I dont "need" all the other random DLC, right?
Thanks for any and all advice :D

Just pirate the piece of shit game and see for yourself.

It's not a map painter. It's a cookie clicker game. Pirate it and see if it's fun.

Not that bad, surprisingly. Brazil abolished their public schools in a coup so fervor isn't that high and I've made sure to not have any negative lobbies form. The timed modifier is 10 years of -0.15 liberty desire tied to making the PU
    >>
    >>2511146
like the other people said, it's a cookie clicker with a skin over it. I recommend you to pirate it and play it for a bit before you decide to purchase or not. Even better is if you're not interested in achievements, then i'd just say pirate it and never buy it. It won't be worth the money until in like maybe 10 years when you get everything including DLC's for at least 60% off or something.

It's alright, but PDX knows they essentially have no competition so they overprice their stuff to hell.

Is there a mod that adds a slider for state/private construction sector? I am not very fond of the mid-game mini game where you build just enough to make both you and the private sector break even.

Making Russia harder to play is good.
Hope the china update makes Qing aids too.
    >>
    >>2513202
The point of the favorites system is to help work around that, is it not? I saw that the favorites system isn't just for russia and functions for autocracy/oligarchy/technocracy/landed voting too, so this should help almost all backwards nations
Besides, you just make sure they're either happy, marginalized, or have no general or admiral anywhere near the capital

Fervor is such a shit mechanic. If a culture is large, it will get +25 from academics, which then qualifies them for an awakening to reach 45 fervor. There's nothing you can do about it. All it means is that you can't assimilate these cultures past the midgame.

lol pollution permits were and are dogshit and the previous system of reimbursing the victims of pollution was infintely better. If wiz wasn't a softcore commie he'd have added ancap policies to complete the anachronistic pie but parajew is itself too commie to understand ''anarcho-liberals'' besides ten trillion revolts per month for establishing pinko hell
    >>
    >>2513679
Shame you benefit from the regulation you so disdain, instead of dying in a house fire.

Used to be two per night, on average. It's why fire department was created, but today they're mostly very bored.
    >>
    >>2513679
lazy fare already is an ancap anachroism
    >>

    >>>/pol/
To entertain your tangent, forced insurance in general is a grift by insurance firms and pinkos in govt to make sure anyone too poor to be included gets fucked, which the pinkos can grift off of to further rob the public in general. However, fire codes when voluntarily enacted are good as that is an engineering problem rather than a manufactured social issue.
Tbh devs should add more grifters and political schemes like fabian socialists to the game, it would be fun to man the courts as FDR in the new expansion and turn America to the pinko hell that murdered McCarthy and sold out china to Mao's reign of terror.
You should also be able to watch as industrialists and commies cooperate to make a state trade union to fuck the trade unions, A faction which itself should be far more conservative than they are in game.
    >>2513688
Lazy fairy was genuine British foreign policy, if parajew were competent they would also add List seething about it to influence German junkers, but there's not even Lysander spooner or Böhm-Bawerk in the game.
    >>
You can't direct people to pol when you are the one to bring up politics.
    >>
    >>2513737
Politics as relevant to vic3 or 19-20th centuries which can be used for vic3 is not only acceptable but on point for the thread. >>2513683 however is pure politics which i entertained for about 2 sentences and referred to >>>/pol/.
My point in general is that the sheer amount of commie bullshit should not be removed but that their opposites in ancap policies straight out of the fantasies of the likes of spooner (and even anachronistically, later thinkers) should be added. There is a distinct lack of non-commie figures in the game like Pareto, Hitler, the aforementioned spooner desu.
There should also be an overhaul of tech as tech were invented by certain people and with patents and the piracy thereof, imagine dr. Diesel, Tesla, Graham Bell or Mauser as strategic assets in and of themselves. Say you extract Sikorsky from the fall of Russia and he gives a good buff to planes and maybe gives experimental helis towards the very end of the game or in mods.
    >>
The way multiculturalism works in the game is already pure fantasy. Why not include other fantasy laws?

Tips on how to decide what to build? I watched some hamkurtz videos and following his advice I built construction sectors until my balance is barely in the negative, then I tried building the construction sector input resources, wood and iron, but it seems like my resource deficits keep getting worse and worse and I’m going to spend half the game building logging camps as a Belgium which seems like a non-European thing to do, should I be building high level buildings and just importing the inputs, but how do I determine what to build.
Also how and when do I invade Africa, it’s 1846 and England and France are already conquering coastal nations. Meanwhile I don’t even have an option to declare war on the blacks. It says online you used to have to “declare interest” (press x to unlock diplomacy options and get better trade prices) but they removed it? And apparently I have to manually set up trades to import resources or some shit? I’m getting pissed off at this game, the economy is too complex and not in a good way. I don’t want to micro trades.

lumber is for big nations with shitload of peasants
i haven't played belgium, but im pretty sure you should have decent amount of iron and coal, so you can start with iron and transition into steel fast
just build the most profitable stuff
debt spending is honestly overrated, if you don't feel safe, just don't do it, it's very easy to spiral on non-gps
manual trade isn't really a thing, treaty goods exchange is basically just a commitment to buy some stuff from foreign market
you need fleet to conquer overseas, set it to project power and you will gain diplo interest in adjacent regions

it's easy to hit the ceiling with belgium, you have few people, few resources and no market really
i think reforming laws and depeasanting is the best part of the game, that's why i never played it
i played sweden on my first run i think, but i didn't understand anything besides just basics of building your supply chain
    >>
    >>2514176
I didn't really mean going into debt, but deficit spending your savings to build things and then refilling the gold reserves via privatization. I though the fun of the game was supposed to come from turning a small low-pop nation into a world power by exploiting colonies to do the menial labor and then just having your elite accepted pops be the soldiers and administrators who run the empire.
