I guess you could argue that trying to fix traffic in Cities Skylines is strategy.
    >>
    >>2500490
People here will cause city-builders "puzzle games" cause "there is only way to solve them" when that could be said for any strategy game ever. You could Starcraft a puzzle game with such logic.

Call me when someone decompiles Simcity 4 in order to run it with current year hardware.

Also CITY builder should be like SC4, i.e., statistical based instead of agent based.
Agent based city builders don't allow scales. Agent based ones are for TOWN building

C:S 1 is kind of strategy-esque because it's hardcoded in the game that when you have a certain amount of money in your current funds/treasury/whatever, it'll bleed into your income and your tax WILL show up as a negative amount. This is why money is still a factor later on in the game, unless you enable the Unlimited funds "mod" or cheat built into the basegame (it's in the main menu)
But I've only tested this by not add/remove any building in my city, and all I did was save-scum the stock market in the game for a few in-game weeks, and after my tax income plummeted, I loaded the save before the stonks shenanigans I did and just let the time pass but my tax income didn't plummet unlike in the other timeline.
Another strategy element is if you didn't use any mods, you'd be forced to have only up to like 10 or 11 tiles that are buildable/workable.

    >>2501138
    RTwP.
Tropico is also a similar city-builder, right?

would SC4's simulation scale this much if it was coded for modern multi-thread processors and you threw 16 cores / 32GB of RAM at it? or does the increase in area make it exponentially more complex and thus still limited to a relatively small area
    >>
    >>2500490
people have been posting them here since the board was made so I guess so
    >>
    >>2503169
Dunno. Would need to experiment. Since it is a statistical based game, if you increase the city sizes from the current max (4km x 4km) with mullti-thread support, you COULD get an actual simulation over larger distances. In games like CIty Skylines that have a "real" clock it wouldn't work.
    >>
    >>2501169
pretty sure SimCity gets it's map-level statistics from underlying agents, and it's been like that since SC1, but i get your point, like the difference is in the granularity, like in Caesar it's single walkers

Surely someone will AI-decompile this. It's a classic that was for whatever reason abandoned by EA even though the city builder is a hugely popular genre that can be endlessly milked through DLC.
    >>
    >>2508914
and we haven't had a good (sim)city builder since SC4, coincidentally. It's hilarious how neglected "sim city-likes" are in the market. We got tonnes of impression games-like games, shitty (rogue-like) colony builders and full on autismo games like w&r. Even all the tycoon games have been kinda shit/mediocre. It's a sad state of affairs.

now that Andy is done creating more hapas (I think) he can focus on his game.
Trust in Andy. He will deliver.

the amount of noise- ground- and air pollution created by industry is absurd in City Skylines

I literally live like right next to an aluminium factory and it is quiet as fuck even when at full production, the air is clean, and there is no ground pollution. I don't know what kind of third world shithole they are implying I'm building my city in but it's super unrealistic for it to be such a problem for people to live next to industry
    >>
    >>2508924
You only got glorified town builders in the market. A real city builder is statistical based (Simcity 4) compared to agent based games (CS): Agents and individual entities are the death of city builders.
    >>
    >>2509388
worst part is you can't even interact with the agents. like I feel like most city builders would be improved if I could publicly execute my populace if they start complaining
    >>
    >>2509386
I think it’s based on Sim City, which starts in the toxic first half of the 20th century but unlike Sim City, building technology for whole types of buildings doesn’t improve. CS is eternally one time.
    >>
Why is it taking so long for someone to conjure up a recomp of Simcity 4 in order to run it with x64 bit support?

The pollution visually looks worse than it actually is, 4 squares of distance between residential and industrial zones is enough just put commercial buildings as a buffer. You can also build offices late game as they don't produce pollution.
    >>
    >>2508914
For sure, the floodgates have opened and SC has very dedicated modding community. Just hopefully it stays drama free.
    >>
    >>2508914
It wasn't abandoned, EA mismanaged Maxis like it does all other companies under its belt.
EA is "failed upward" the company.
    >>
    >>2509388
yeah, also agents are absolute resource hogs, if you want to recreate somewhat realistic numbers. A city builder should be trivial to run on modern hardware. Several sub-genres in the strategy sector suffer from a shit-tornado of several root causes that produce nothing but sloppy and mediocre games. Be it city builders, tycoon games, grand strategy, rtses.
I'd be fine with some indie games that take 80% of a good game of the past and iron out the kinks and add some qol and put in some sensible additions. You'd think Transport Fever would be one of that games, but somehow no. They couldn't even do it right in their third attempt. And afaik no one even tried to make a SC4 or 3000 successor/clone, which is baffling.
    >>
Most of the city-building games I’ve played didn't require any kind of strategic thinking.
A-Train Tourism, however, is an exception. It's a train and city management game, and what makes it so strategic is that you have a series of objectives in each scenario, and you won't simply win without coming up with a workable plan first. Just making the numbers go up isn't enough.
One of the game's scenarios, set on several islands crisscrossed by highways, required more strategic thinking on my part to create something that worked (i.e., stayed within budget, turned a profit, and brought me close to meeting the objectives) than my 150 hours playing Europa Universalis 4.
