This game looks like shit. I'm sticking to DoW1.
    >>
    >>2493718
it looks good tho, arguably 10x better than total war CA has presented
    >>
I’m willing to give DoW4 a chance. But I still think DoW1 was peak, specifically vanilla/WA (DC ruined the balance and I never played Soulstorm)
    >>
    >>2493718
This UI is a bit overbearing.
    >>

the unit scale is completely fucked in DoW4, and the maps are fuckhuge and empty. I don't think it'll be a success bros...

they're bad at the game and only build t1 units and drop expensive defenses in the middle of enemy attacks

These maps look like dogshit. Why is every single one just a collection of rooms and doorways? You watch each battle report and there's no flanking or interacting with the terrain. Each guy just marches his dudes directly into a chokepoint until one person uses their bombing run ability.

Superficially. Despite making Homeworld and Impossible Creatures before, Dawn of War, and Dawn of War supposedly running on Impossible Creatures' 'engine', clearly uses Warcraft III as a baseline.

New trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy8qn3VqYiE) reminds us that the game takes place on Kronus yet still has only four races, out of the eight that Dark Crusade had when we first went there.

Their justification as seen in the trailer is that (ultimately thanks to the Codex Retardes) the Blood Ravens are so few in number that they no longer play as however you decided to play them back in the day as they were so malleable, but mainly for stealth, led by a promoted Cyrus.

This is ass of course, so we conveniently have a new perfect opportunity to bring in the Dark Angels whose favor by the corpos is second only to the Toilet Marines.

I think Dark Mechanicum, following the new and corpo-favorite Vashtorr is pretty likely, but what about Xenarites? Any bets they'll even be acknowledged in any way? Necrons are right there just like in Mechanicus.

Tech was always slowly progressing which is why you have different armor marks even
Primaris were started 10k years ago, which fittingly to a setting retarded Imperium handicapped
Terminator Armor and Land Raiders aren't priceless relics, they are manufactured still
Mk8 armor or Xenophase Blades aren't a pale imitation of original
Primaris are a nothingburger of an upgrade and just a propaganda and Cawl is a hack
    >>
    >>2508438
I grew up with the 90s lore, I have no idea what kind of dumb shit GW is asspulling nowadays. My first exposure to Primarisslop was Battlesector
    >Tech was always slowly progressing which is why you have different armor marks even
WAS, past tense, and anything newer is slowly produced in trivially small amounts. Mark I through VII armor predates the Heresy and Mark VIII armor is still 10,000 years old, slowly made piecemeal, and generally just to replace individual pieces of older suits
    >Primaris were started 10k years ago, which fittingly to a setting retarded Imperium handicapped
There were no primaris in lore until recently, it’s a stupid asspull by GW to justify selling new models.
    >Terminator Armor and Land Raiders aren't priceless relics, they are manufactured still
Manufactured in tiny amounts insufficient to replace large scale losses, which is why things like “lol the entire ultramarines first company got eaten” was a devastating and irreplaceable loss
    >Mk8 armor or Xenophase Blades aren't a pale imitation of original
Mark VIII armor is, again, ten thousand years old, and I’ve literally never heard of “xenophase blades”, is this more new dumb shit they made up?

    >Mark VIII armor is still 10,000 years old
    just like mkX
    >slowly made piecemeal, and generally just to replace individual pieces of older suits
Nope, that's why those who could afford it like Deathwatch used it as a baseline. It being newer and better than old tech
    >until recently
10 years ago is not recently
    >Manufactured in tiny amounts insufficient to replace large scale losses,

NTA, but I generally feel the same. I like 40k's setting overall, but the Imperial Guard and Space Marines are the least interesting things in it. If humanity has to be the centerpiece, I'd prefer it be literally anything or anyone else than the IG or SMs, so shit like Rogue Trader or Dark Heresy are much more preferable IMO.
Now in a strategy war game, I understand those are the most relevant (ground) armies humanity has in the setting, so I don't mind them being included, but I would much prefer for such a game to also have a campaign or primary/major gameplay mode where I can play any other race or army, other than those two.
    >>
    >>2508808

Base building is simple, but Orks, Admech and Necrons actually have to build a lot. More so than in DoW1 imo. You constantly, all the time have to build Dominion pylons, Waagh Banners and wifi routers.
Marines barely have any base building in DoW4
    >>
I've played a lot of the DoW4 betas, you may choose to believe me or not, I don't give a shit.
Here's the good and the bad:

    >The Good:

-The graphics are real nice, units looks good (at least on max settings) and particle effects are varied and well done

-The animations are well made (when they work, more on this later) and there is a great variety of them

-The maps look good, some even featuring some degree of destruction

-Some of the music is nice

-Necrons and Space marines are well done and fit well thematically with their faction identities

    Continued for the bad
    >>
    >>2509780
    >The bad:

-Balance is a complete mess, and not in a "it's still early and they need to figure out numbers" but in a "they have no idea what the fuck they're doing".
Let's start with weapon balance, you see, most things in the game have tooltips explaining what a particular item does, well these tooltips are almost entirely wrong, for instance most weapons that say "effective against vehicles" will be better at taking out infantry than vehicles, a lascannon will completely decimate infantry models, why you ask? Because it's a fucking hitscan weapon with 100% accuracy and that goes for almost every weapon in the game with the sole exception of ork rokkits which you can dodge.
So the devs made anti vehicle weapons do a lot of damage (as they should) but they didn't calibrate an accuracy variable for them, so anything with high penetration and damage will annihilate infantry, so the biggest, most expensive anti vehicle upgrade is almost always the best upgrade for a unit.
The only situation where this is not optimal is when you're shooting chaff (namely, ork boyz and skitarii), since a slow firing weapon will do a lot of overkill, but anything can kill chaff so who cares.
    >>
    >>2509781
-There is basically no differentiation between vehicles, buildings and infantry.
People might call me a liar because the game shows values for light, heavy, building etc. damage on a weapon tooltip, but the game has no apparent armor types, it only has an armor and armor penetration stat.
So, let's assume a unit deals 100 damage per hit with an armor pen of 5 (pretty common armor pen, even beast snaggaz a tier 1 chaff unit can get it with tech upgrade), it's shooting or striking a unit with 6 armor (starting armor for most early vehicles, even intercessors can get 6 armor within the first minute of a game), you lose 8% (or gain) damage for every point of difference between armor and armor pen, so your hit dealing 100 damage will deal 92.
Here's the problem, because there is no armor types (or there actually are but do fuck all) and just an armor stat, ANYTHING can kill vehicles, and I mean ANYTHING, gone are the days when you needed a dedicated anti vehicle squad, you can quite literally shoot it or hit it enough and it will go down extremely fast.
So you have this absurd situation nothing really feels like a vehicle, don't believe me? Go watch Bricky's video on the prologue and see how fast a super unit (Gorkanaut) goes down to a bunch of guardsmen, the lowest of the low chaff.

-Buildings go down in seconds and AOE damage completely demolish them.
What's that? You spent a huge amount of resources upgrading a listening post to level 3? Too bad, my single unit of electropriests (a tier 1.5 unit that deals AOE ranged damage) will take it down on its own.
For god knows what reason AOE damage deals extra damage to any building, so frag grenades will demolish a barrack or turret, the necron black hole thingy (that isn't that expensive btw, it's not a real nuke) takes out EVERY SINGLE BUILDING IN THE GAME THAT IS NOT AN HQ OR LVL 3 LP.
    >>
    >>2509782
-The game features units with fixed gun placements or that cannot shoot behind them.. but doesn't feature a reverse button, actually scratch that, it doesn't feature REVERSE period.
Many tanks (or vehicles in general) in the game as you might know feature fixed turrets, or they cannot turn 360 degrees (A dreadnought cannot shoot while backing off) but there is no reverse button or reverse, so you want to move outside an AOE or pull a long range unit closer to you by moving back? Too bad, your entire tank will have to TURN and expose itself to fire while being unable to fire back properly, your dreadnought will literally be unable to fight back at all, you cannot even reverse like in old games that didn't feature reverse buttons by pressing right behind the unit, it will need to TURN around to back off just a few paces, it's insane.

-The games tooltips are simply a mess
It's hard to explain how poorly thought out the tooltips are, which is a problem, because they actually look final, here's an example.
The tooltips for weapon upgrades shows you damage numbers against the various supposed unit types (light, heavy etc.), so let's take Necron immortals for example.
Their Tesla carbines are a weapon upgrade you have to pay for, when you look at the tooltip, every single damage number is lower and appears red, so why the fuck would anyone think it's an upgrade? Well you see what the game doesn't tell you is that it shoots much faster and leaves a fucking DoT on the unit it hits.
The game is chock full of hidden and poorly explained stats.
    >>
    >>2509784
    >These are the main balance concerns, there's other ones but these are the main ones, onto the next, technical stuff:

-The animation director is abysmal, and I mean simply and completely terrible.
If you're dumb enough to buy this game after reading this do me a favor, launch the game and send a melee unit against a structure, or a single entity, you will notice the unit wlll simply dance in place, striking at the air, incapable of syncing properly with building or single entity.
You will notice 80% of the unit simply pacing around, with 2 or 3 models striking at the air every once in a while, words cannot express how bad it looks, it's something you have to look for yourself.
This also causes some major issues during large engagements, the animation director is so bad it's pretty common to be unable to tell who the fuck is fighting who during an engagement, particularly with numerous factions like orks and mechanicus.

    -Odd thematic choices.
For some reason, mechanicus is the actual horde faction, being able to spam units en masse they can quickly upgrade through tech unlocks.
Mechanicus plays exactly as you think orks should play, you have extremely cheap infantry (and I mean extremely, a skitarii costs like 90 req, ork boyz cost 160 and an intercessor 400) that improves considerably through global research until you reach a critical mass of ass fuckery, the noosphere plays exactly as you think the waaagh should play, every level reduces costs and increases damage globally and unlocks new tech, you can reduce the noosphere by blowing up buildings granting it, you know, sort of like DoW1 orks and waaagh banners.
    >>
    >>2509786
-Speaking of the damn orks, contrary to any common sense they're the actual elite unit faction! They're the one faction in the game where you want to conserve your units and not want them to die, which is insane to think about.
Why you might ask? Well you see orks is the only faction in the game whose unit upgrades are locked behind veterancy, so when you lose a unit with orks you lose A LOT, most units have 1 or 2 mobbing up upgrades (it adds max models to the unit), you might say, "well, just buy two of them to replace the one with increased models you lost" but the thing is you don't pay increased upkeep based on number of models, basically an ork boy with 1 model left will require the same upkeep as a unit with 15.
Losing units with orks sends you in a vicious circle of "lose more", you lost an upgraded unit you cannot replace by simply paying for upgrades, your new unit will have to fight and gain exp before you can unlock upgrades, but now it's a fresh, unupgraded unit facing the same enemy that took out the upgraded unit, so it will struggle even more to gain exp, see where the problem is? Once you start losing you lose even more.
You'd think orks would be the cheap expendable faction, but no, it's literally the opposite lol.

I'm sure there's other stuff, but this is just off the top of my head.

Some stuff I forgot to mention:

-The retreat unit seems there just to appease to the DoW2 crowd, it doesn't increase your speed or reduce damage (despite what the tooltip says), it just makes you an easy fucking target for enemies that can easily following you in base because there's no suppression, if you retreat your unit, expect to lose it for no gain, just stand and fight and autoreinforce until it's dead, at least you dealt some damage.

-Speaking of suppression, the game is almost entirely straight combat, no smoke, no suppression, very few sources of knockback.
You can reinforce anywhere so you don't need transports or buildings to act as reinforcement points, matter of fact, the only "transport" in the game is the thunderhawk and it's a building you load your units into.
The only support units are heroes who every once in a while can activate a warcry or similar stuff.

-The game has some serious, (and I mean SERIOUS) memory leaks, like during a skirmish it takes up to 30gb from my SSD, and I have 16gb of VRAM and 32gb of RAM

I like the proportions but the design is an objective downgrade. It's basically the same story with everything else in #New40k, from technical standpoint the new models stand head and shoulders above the old ones, but they just tend to be very uninspired.
They should have just ripped the bandaid off and made truescale versions of everything. Not that truescale lasted very long anyway with Imperial Guard again slowly creeping up to be almost as tall as Primaris.

After playing it a bit more, I really see no future for it. It's RTS, which makes it unappealing inherently. The only hope for survival RTS games have is by developing a competitive MP community. DoW4 has no chance for this. It's very, very dumbed down, casual and simplistic, even compared to DoW1. It doesn't even have morale, no strafing for vehicles, no directional armor?, research is free and only takes time, base building is as simple as in dow (arguably simpler even), but 2 factions don't even need builders, abilities are fewer (and you just autocast them), less unit upgrades, heroes are less customizable than in DoW2, cover is even more sparse than in DoW1 and not working like CoH/DoW2 obviously again and balance is an utter mess with Orks raping everyone

There are only 3 potential features it has going on for it
    >Melee combat animations being pretty to look at (this fucks over gameplay naturally and competitive environment, locking units in place etc). Really, no wonder they are focusing on them so hard. This is really the best feature game has
    >Potentially campaign, since for the first time it's actually cinematic with proper cutscenes (even though we can see they suck with absurd direction)
    >Coop wave defense and the Last Stand (we haven't even seen them yet I think)
And yeah, battles are bigger than previously. But does it even matter? TW40k will have them even bigger

Voice Acting sucks, music is only cool in menu
And to top it off it looks like majority of game is ad explicitly for shit that doesn't sell
    >Nobody likes and buys snaggas - they are half of orks in game
    >Nobody likes and buys Phobos - they are half of marine roster in game
    >Nobody buys Lion - he is in game
    >Admech is famously not popular - it's in game
etc I'm surprised nuCoteaz isn't in game at this point

Realistically people will beat campaign once and then uninstall the game
Absolute best use for this game will be asking Claude sama to rip sync animations from it and port them to TW40K
    >>
    >>2510309
    >actually cinematic
I get what you are talking about, as in pre-rendered but lel, most of the trailers I've seen were shot rather poorly. Necrons' is the sole exception but they didn't do anything in it, just the "Darth Vader and Palps walking past the stormtroopers" kind of scene so it was hard to fuck up and insert some mistakes one could immediately point out. And even then personally I felt that the trailer sucked because they tried looking intimidating while doing nothing despite the fact that they spent the last one being raped by a strong independent black George.

rts campaigns are linear moviegames of strategy genre, which you beat once and then uninstall the game
Their mp is the only thing giving them replay value, but all multiplayer RTS slots are already cornered

I know how this will sound but by this point "Primaries" are all gay and lame. It has been so long now that most of people who were into Warhammer for the old lore and "feel" of it have long left for different pastures and all that's left is either compfags, new people or people that simply "don't get what the fuss is about, Stormcast Eternals are fucking cool!". AoS and #New40k won, not because they're better but because it's a product so if you don't like what GW does with it your only option is to fuck off (closest being 30k which is a can of worms of it's own). All new changes to 1d6chan essentially represent that zeitgeist of modern /tg/, so you shouldn't act surprised.

4chan is cringe in general so any associated project also has to be. It had it's uses and hilariously enough on occasion it was (is?) the more factually correct wiki compared to the two serious Warhammer ones, but you have to consider the type of person that would dedicate their free time to make articles on a wiki that ultimately exist solely to document 4chan's perspective on tabletop games.
It did definitely change though. It's sometimes hard to notice because most of it never gets updated (so the repeats of the same memes might actually date back to when those memes were still fresh...er), but if you look into it you will find a severe difference in how people used to percieve Warhammer, GW and corpos making games in general.

It looks good but plays awful, the game is all combat, there's no transports, suppression, smoke, artilleryline of sight, (you literally see what the opponent is building in the fog of war, wtf).

No way to punish blobs, no way to slow down the enemy.

You can't tell who is fighting who because of the sync combat being janky as fuck, dudes fall to the ground and they're still synces, so you have entire units flailing at the air while they wait for the enemy to get up.

There's no reverse, you need to move a couple meters outside an AOE? Your tank has to turn all the way around before it starts moving, not being able to fire with its fixed turrets btw.

There's a lot more but I can't be arsed right now.

No way this will flop. Not the way shit like Stormgate did

It still has 4 cinematic campaigns with 70+ missions in total. And you can play most of them (save for prologue ones) as either of two subfactions (Bravens or Dangels, Gorgutz or Guzcutta). So there will incentive to beat them at least twice. This alone will keep people attention for a bit longer than usual with RTS
Some people will fuck around in the Last Stand for a while
Unlike DoW3 it will easily get CSM dlc at least, maybe even Guard and Eldar/Nids

Obviously nobody will play it over TW40k. Nobody will buy DoW4 dlc over TW one. Especially since factions dlcs here will have to come again with cinematic, but linear campaign and all those sync animations pairing them with larger and larger amount of units and factions with each release. They will be harder and more expensive to make, especially compared to shit like Gladius, which can chug along releasing constant dlcs which cost nothing to make (no VA, no cinematic campaign, minimal animations).
It will do better than your average RTS, but best case scenario they are on a borrowed time until TW40K drops
    >>2510993
dow4 is shit nobody cares about
    >>2510851
Your AI vomit advocating for dumbing down games admits RTS have no replay value unless they succeed at becoming competitive mp title (they won't, market is cornered already)
In order to live, they would need to stop being traditional RTS and make singleplayer/coop replayable (so abandon being RTS and turn into Total War or GSGs)
    >>2510480
It is, because RTS has no replay value save for multiplayer battles, which won't catch on
People beat linear campaigns and then uninstall the game, forgetting it, game no longer getting more popular and not getting dlcs
People beat sandbox campaign in Total War/GSG and then intermediately after start another, then another and another, playing constantly and buying each and every dlc that drops, which makes them play them again and again
    >>
    >>2511795
    >they are on a borrowed time until TW40K drops
This is like saying Age of Empires will flop because Medieval Total War exists.

Good games are good games. If it's good people generally are going to buy and play them. If dow4 is good and TW40k ends up being shit then more people are probably going to switch.

    Funny you say this
This is exactly what happened, few times even. And that's despite AoE being the one RTS series alongside Starcraft and CoH which actually got replayability through mp. Unlike all other RTS which flop
    >If it's good people generally are going to buy and play them.
They will play RTS once, which is all you need to beat those simple linear cinematic campaigns. After that they will uninstall it and abandon, stop talking about it and make it impossible for a dev to further work on it and expand it. It will be DEAD. And, since we are talking about DoW, such RTS will never reach it's true potential. Just like DoW didn't and each title was abandoned before it actually got all main factions playable, let alone their distinct subfactions.
    >>2511815
nobody plays admech period, an expensive horde army, with a shitton of hard details to paint
nobody buys phobos which is why they are dead since 8th introduced them

I have almost 80 hours in Iron Harvest.

It's an above average game. Campaign was pretty good and visually it's great. Balance though is rough. Heavy troopers, mounted guns and mechs all move at a snails pace. There is no option for mounted guns to have travel form like every other RTS. Mechs actually do have a reverse movement option, but it's a hot key they don't tell you about and doesn't have a button on the UI and by default all mechs will turn around when issued commands.

This ties in to my biggest issue which is retreat not only effects mechs and air craft, meaning they will slowly turn away exposing their vulnerable back to the enemy, but retreat doesn't give a speed or defensive boost so you literally just lose control of the unit till it makes it back to base.

When they added air units too for some reason they made it so AA turrets can only be built in the base, but regular emplacements can still be built anywhere.

I didn't really find the quirks too bad still because the game is still pretty fun to play. Visually they went very hard. Mechs feel like the lumbering giants they are supposed to be and watching one explode feels rewarding even if it's your own. The voice acting and music is very good too.

It's a rough and unpolished gem with a lot of charm. Get it on sale and enjoy how over the top the American faction is. They represented America well.

DoW2 is the best looking DoW game by far. The only not cartoony one, with aesthetics based on Forge World style and not Games Workshop

Too many 40k games try to replicate the style of the minis instead of the actual art work.

    That explains everything

    >Defective Edition Mission 6
    >Sergeants' Rally ability is now on S instead of Z/X
    >Attack Ground for Guardsmen/Cultists grenade launchers is still on S
    >Instead of moving Rally back to Z/X, Attack Ground just completely overrides it
    >Colonel Brom is now useless and cannot quickly attach to any broken squad to instantly Rally them
    >Still doesn't even get a Plasma Pistol from the Armory research
I really hope Relic goes under

    Forge World style?

You were talking about retreating as if it was bad, even though you could just massacre the runners with melee units. No idea why you brought it up.
    >dogshit 2s
Fuck off, I never shilled Black & White 2.

I think it's direction given by GW or something. 90% of 40k games make everything look just like the stills on the GW online store. Same details, same poses, near-identical colours.
    >>
    >>2513482
Back in the day forge world was separate from the main GW studio and they had their own distinct painting style. More muted, grounded, using a lot of techniques from modelling at large outside warhammer, instead of the flat layering and the edge highlighting ad infinitum of GW's "'eavy metal" painting team.

Oh I see, thanks. Anyway I agree, DoW2 looks better. I can actually feel the "grim" in "grimdark" there, like in the art of older rulebooks

reddit shill trash. you aren't fooling anyone.
    >"It's a rough and unpolished gem with a lot of charm"
    lol fuck yourself retard
    >>
DoW4 is fundamentally broken, even the most basic things are not working correctly but the youtube shills will pan away as soon as a pathing issue or units swinging into the air happen, the game also lacks any kind of depth and mechanics.

looks like DoW3, but with even more downgraded combat somehow

It's sightly better than DoW3 and unlike 3 this game could have a chance at success but if it release as it is right now it's doomed to die in 3 months, maybe less, I'm also fairly confident that most of the issues stem from the combat director, they waste a massive a mount of time programming shit that nobody will ever see because you can't actually see shit on the battlefield during a normal game and it's also buggy as hell in general.
    >>
    >>2514051
looks like they should have stuck with keeping sync shit to kills
    also rip my boxnaught nigga

Definitely, they should studied DoW1, sync kills there were very theatrical and flashy, the color saturation was distinct so that you could actually see units fighting and instantly tell what was going on.
Look at this webm, this is the full power of the combat director, units napping on the ground, constantly repositioning for no reason, swinging into nothing and I'm sure this garbage is also eating a ton of processing power.
    >>
    >>2514070
    >units just stunned on the ground
I can see that being fine for being affected by an ability, but that seems really retarded if its just because of the sync animations

yep, it's just part of the animation, happens with walkers too, walkers and some bigger heroes can push each other on the ground.
    >>
    >>2514015
Oh G-d that Stronghold looks awful
    >>
    >>2514082
It's quite literally the DoW1 stronghold with a second floor

Or do you mean the animations? Cause yeah those are awful
    >>
    >>2514015
Absolutely baffling that an RTS will be inferior in so many ways to an RTS 20 years older than it.
    >>
    >>2514149
It’s really not surprising at all, as DoW1 was the peak of the RTS genre.
    >>
    >>2514149
I ask myself that question for most games desu
