When are they going to remake this? It was always the best Battletech game. HBS Battletech was okay. MWO has always been slow and boring.
    >>
The graphics aren't even that bad. It's got sort of a JA2 aesthetic going.

    >The graphics aren't even that bad.
    c'mon now
    >>
    >>2493206

pre-rendered isometricals were peak 3D IMO... i sitll haven't played it.
    >>
    >>2493204
The game is freeware now but I absolutely can't get it to run right on Windows 11. I'd love a remake that runs well on modern systems
    >>
    >>2493879
    >I absolutely can't get it to run right on Windows 11
You need to install directplay (it comes with windows but is no longer installed by default)

If you use the original discs/ISO's you'll need to play with settings. Darkest hours works out the box: https://www.moddb.com/mods/mechcommander-gold-hi-res/downloads/mcg-darkest-hours-fullversion
Same game (campaigns are merged in to a 'single' campaign - the '2nd' campaign is a bunch of fan missions).

    >>2493363
Hey! The graphics are great, it's the animations that are janked.
    >>
    >>2493204
Really wish our computer came with this instead of Mech Warrior when I grew up.
    >>
Did this game have a mode where you command waves of troops? Like for a big offensive?
    >>
One of my most remembered moment in gaming was on the search for Raven mission, I still had one artillery strike saved towards the end and I see a blip coming on the radar. I calculated speed and timed the artillery strike right when the blip would be on the bridge. Bridge collapsed and I got slightly damaged Mad Cat.
    >>
    >>2493967
I'm using the copy from MyAbandonware. Game opens fine but when a mission starts the screen scrolls very slowly. Directplay is installed already
    >>
    >>2494117
nope. this isn't a TD game ya noes?
there isn't even a /tg/ battletech where you command waves of troops.
it's more like Commandos but with mechs.
    >>
just get the Darkest Hour thing. it'll pretty much scratch all your MechCommander itches
    >>
    >>2493204
    >When are they going to remake this?

Never, because the rights to Battletech are completely fucked. The tabletop rights are held by Topps and they license it out to CGL, who have to dance around the limits of their license with every product they release. The vidya rights are held by Microsoft and they license them out on a restrictive game-by-game basis. PGI only has the license for Mechwarrior 5, which is why the Clans spinoff had to pretend to be a stand-alone expansion pack.

HBS only got to make BT because Weisman asked really nicely and Microsoft saw no money in it. Once the game turned out successful, Microsoft jacked up the licensing fee, which caused Paradox (who had acquired HBS in the meantime) to cancel the in-production sequel. The only way to resolve this situation is for Microsoft to offensively license out Battletech at low cost (which they won't do) or for some third party to buy the rights off them (and Microsoft doesn't sell).
    >>
    >>2494789
    >we made money off of a successful game
    >let's jack up the fee so a wildly successful sequel will never get made and we won't make more money
Corporations genuinely deserve to be broken up.
    >>
    >>2494822
Paradox are even more retarded. They first acquire HBS because they made the wildly successful BT game. Then they don't want to pay for the license anymore and refuse to greenlight the slam-dunk sequel. Instead HBS makes Lamplighter's League, which predictably flops. Then Paradox dumps HBS because of that.
from top to bottom it's pure retardation
    >>
    >>2494789
Battletech was okay but I never really finished it. it's quite a slog to go through even after the Highlander.
    >>
    >tfw no cute autistic clanner gf
    >>
    >>2494789
    >Commander Keen sequel will never be made because of retarded IP rights
    >now this
    i hate lawyerfags
    >>
    >>2494839
IP law has been in need of reform for a while.
If you hold the rights to something and have no intent to make a good faith effort to make something with that property in a reasonable timeframe you should be forced to auction those rights.
    >>
    >>2494682
I played more mechwarrior than i care to admit. I want to play bigger battle than shoot at 6-7 mechs at once.
    >>
    >>2495082
My chief complaint about mw5 is that it almost felt like a horde survival rather than a tactical squad game with the respawning enemies and streams of disorganized mechs trickling in. Shadow of kerensky on top of all the other dlc almost gave me what I was looking for. It's an amazing feeling taking on a random merc contract to make some money after refitting all your new clan toys just to have a full clan star drop, blow up the remaining IS forces around them and then you have to deal with them.
It's probably not fun for them when they see a kodiak pop around a wall, melt right through their warhammer before the rest are blindsided by a warhawk and an awesome unloading their own ppc's all over them.
    >>
    >>2494825
Paradox gave HBS the chance they wanted at establishing their own franchise. HBS took it because they saw the potential of more money from a franchise they owned as opposed to licensed. Everything HBS has succesfully released was derived from a pre-existing franchises. When they releases Lamplighters it flopped, not because it was a bad game but because it was a buggy mess. The same can be said for every other game HBS has released, but the fans of the franchises they plunder are willing to put up with it because they are desperate for content.

As much as I hate Paradox they were right to drop HBS. HBS as a studio can't make a game for shit, but they can cater to nostalgia.
    >>
    >>2495129
That is a valid strategy. Some studios can catch lightning in a bottle with their own new ip but by and large for small studios especially relying on existing ip's is the way to go. Paradox is lazy themselves because they could have gone in one to one with HBS and made a battletech stellaris game instead of the half baked mod theft star trek game they made.

are you some zoomer retard who only plays current year UE5 slop and shills DLSS5? that screenshot looks great

Most kino intro cinematic of any Battletech game, that's for sure.

Mw: Clans was so bad about encounter design i have had MW5 tainted in my eyes. If i ever get a flight stick i may return, if what you say about the later expansion packs are true.
    >>
    >>2495247
The downside is that yes, you need all the dlc to really make mw5 mercs shine. But from the recent ones it's clear that they finally figured out what they're doing, and the next one is going to have the longest dlc campaign yet.
    >>
MC1 was awesome. The only thing that it needed was the mech customization system of MC2.
    >>
    >>2499249
Yeh, MC1 used the older, weight-based loadout system from earlier MW games. MC2 used a module size-based system closer to that of MW4. And, despite personally considering 4 to be an inferior game to 3, I believe its loadout system, with dedicated weapon types (on IS mechs), was better than the pure weight-based one from 3.

Has anyone been able to launch the editor on modern systems? I have the remaster MCG Darkest Hours and am loving the level design. Would like to make some levels myself but the editor crashes right away every time.

no it's not. it was cutting edge pre rendered 3Ds.
    >>
    >>2499274
cmon it still has a weight limit in later games. it's also more "realistic" to have size and module limits.
    >>
    >>2505417
Well, yes. I prefer the size/module type based system from 4 to 3's pure weight system.
    >>
I like mw5's size system, which is why I'm not really fond of yaml. It makes every battlemech feel like an omnimech with the crazy customization you can do. MW5 vanilla but with the ability to customize engines and internals/armor would be ideal. Just make upgrading to endo/ferro from standard cripplingly expensive.
With the metal fatigue thread up I always throught a battletech game where you create your own frankenmechs would be amazing.
    >>
    >>2504225
IlKhan era reads like fanfiction. I stopped caring about the continuation lore when Dark Age hapoened when frankenmechs became the standard.
    >>
    >>2505437
Yaml was made by the people used to MW4 mercs where you put guns on your legs cus the system was open to being abused.
